I’m kind of shocked that Shane keeps managing to find new trails for us to walk, but he does! Sunday we took Peedee, Rennie, Mags, and Ice Cream Star to a little patch of shoreline along Smithville Lake, right by the dam and across the way from Smith’s Fork Park. The trails wrap around the Army Corps of Engineers building (which is pretty rad looking) and then just kind of dead-end a mile or two down (I think! We never seem to reach the end, you see.) Between the gravel paths and ALL THE WATER!, it wasn’t exactly Mags’s favorite, but we made it work.

2015-10-18 - Going to the Drive-In - 0014 [flickr]

Aaaand Sunday = movie night, natch. Crimson Peak was paired with Trainwreck, which the drive-in brought back for a few weeks. This seems to be a trend – resurrecting months-old movies – the logic of which I don’t quite get. Like, did we really need to revisit Pixels? And it’s not like there’s a shortage of new movies. Crimson Peak plus The Green Inferno, just saying… (I’m not much for torture porn, but this one’s got me intrigued.)

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed Trainwreck the second time around (the fox even made a repeat appearance!), and would totally pee my pants at a second run of Mad Max.

We were all so beat from the walk that we passed out on the drive down. Except for Shane, who had to drive the van. Bless his heart.

2009-10-19 - Dogs Playing - 0027

I didn’t take any pictures today, or at least not anything worth sharing, so here’s one from October 19th, 2009. It’s one of my all-time favorites of Rennie, so much so that a giant version is hanging in the “gallery of furkids” above the bookcases in my library.

We took the Terrible Trio + Foster Doggeh to Smith’s Fork Park again; it’s quickly becoming everyone’s favorite place. This time I was feeling a little more daring, so we went on one of the wooded trails. I think we managed to avoid the problem plants, but Mags kind of overdid it with her bum hip, thus landing herself on crate rest for the remainder of the week. She was understandably pissed about it.

2015-10-20 - Outside with the Dogs - 0008 [flickr]

We had a few more days where the temps brushed 80 degrees – probably the last until next year – so we squeezed in a little afternoon sunbathing. Sadly, Ice Cream Star doesn’t really enjoy lazing about outside, which is one of his few flaws. (Along with shameless toy thievery and the inability to properly howl.)

Rennie and Mags had their last swim session on Thursday, 10/22, which is officially the latest we’ve ever managed. They could do without the record-breaking, thankyouverymuch.

Lazy day is lazy.

2015-10-21 - Relaxing in the Sunroom - 0019 [flickr]

Enjoying the warm weather in the sunroom. All of the breeze, none of the bugs. Also there’s a mattress, which Peedee appreciates.

Bedtime! Twenty-three pillows, and Peedee settles down on mine.

Smith’s Fork Park, redux (but minus a very unhappy Mags). Peedee did great, even though we accidentally took a longer and more challenging route. The place is filled with nooks and crannies and forks, not all of them on the map.

2015-10-23 - Chillin' in the Sunroom - 0025 [flickr]

Nature keeps teasing us, but I’m 99.9% sure that Friday was the last warm day of the year. We spent it chilling in the sunroom, where else?

Finnick is not normally invited to these events (See: Peedee has cancer), but Shane was out, so….

2015-10-24 - Walking Cabin Fever - 0004 [flickr]

After lunch, we took Peedee, Rennie, and Ice Cream Star to the Cabin Fever Trailhead, where IC managed to get himself covered in prickly, spiky burrs.

I’m pretty sure it happened right around here, when we followed a semi-beaten path through the brush to reach this funny outcropping of rocks. We noticed maybe five minutes later, when he stopped to chew his paws. It looked like he ran into a cactus. Or a whole forest of them. Poor guy! Luckily we were able to pick enough of them off right there on the trail that he was able to walk back on his own, and I got the rest of them on the ride home. It’s like a half hour drive, plus I think we stopped for a good fifteen or twenty minutes in the middle of the walk, so that should give you some idea of how back it was. He must’ve walked right over the bush, whatever it was.

The Peedee Update: Things haven’t gotten much worse from last week, which I’ll chalk up to a win. I think he might be coughing a little more, but it still seems confined to his nose and throat, so who knows? His breathing is shallow and rapid; Shane likens it to a longtime asthmatic who’s learned to adjust his breathing to accommodate decreased lung capacity, which sounds about right.

While it sure looks and sounds alarming, Peedee still gets around okay: he’s mostly able to keep up a steady pace during walks (though he has his bad days as well as good), and he doesn’t seem worse afterwards. He gets excited at mealtimes (even if he is suspicious of the pills and oils that we sometimes hide in his food) and loves to play puzzle toys for treats. He sometimes turns up his nose at the staple treats, like peanut butter balls and popcorn, but I think this is more because we’ve spoiled him rotten vs. a disinterest in food. He just gets so much of it that we have to up the ante to really grab his attention.

I know I said I was going to abandon these posts for awhile, but I think I’d like to finish out October first. Halloween, y’all! We’ll be able to have one last horror movie marathon with Peedee after all. Back when we first got the diagnosis, I floated the idea of doing it a few months early, since I didn’t think he’d be around. Yet here he is! That’s something to celebrate, right?
