2015-10-25 - Napping in the Sunroom - 0002 [flickr]

The weather was warm-ish, so we spent the afternoon napping (them) and reading (me) in the sunroom before we left for the movies. I suspect we’re going to have to close it up soon for the winter, so best enjoy it while we still can!

I’m really starting to build quite the collection of pictures of Mags paired with adult-type books: Mags and Bitch magazine; Mags & Other Monsters; Mags hearts Bitch Planet. Now: Mad Mags, Furry Road. I feel like maybe I should start a Mags + Books tumblr? Yay or nay? (I think you know where Mags stands on this.)

Going to the drive-in! We saw The Last Witch Hunter (predictably cheesy) and Sicario (a little weird, but good; ever since Edge of Tomorrow, I love me some Emily Blunt).

Peedee wants to know, what is the holdup on his french fries? (Yup, I share my fries with him. ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING HE WANTS.)

2015-10-26 - Walking at Wallace State Park - 0004 [flickr]

Shane found us YET ANOTHER NEW PLACE to walk, can you believe it? Wallace State Park, in nearby Cameron, has a whole bunch of wooded trails, along with small lake (or a large pond, who knows), as well as camping and picnic areas. Lots of space to walk, in other words! Normally I’d avoid the forested hiking trails, but desperate times, and also the park peeps helpfully labeled the poison ivy-heavy trails, so we knew which ones to avoid.

Sadly we had to leave Mags at home, but on the positive side, this gave us the chance to scope out the trails ahead of time and see which ones are manageable for our little old lady and her bum hip.

2015-10-28 - New Toys! - 0021 [flickr]

Peedee got some new toys today! When I saw Bart playing with a lotus-style, treat ball/puzzle toy combo in this ASPCA adoption video, I just had to have it. For Peedee! I thought he’d like it, and he totally did!

He was so cute the first (and second!) time around: he kept rolling it with his nose, like he would a treat ball, and then looked on in confusion when no treats came spilling out. It took him a little while to grasp the “pull and tug” concept, but he got there. (There’s video, but Ice Cream Star makes a cameo, so I have to keep it to myself. Sorry!)

I also got him another puzzle toy, which was entirely too easy (shoulda listened to the reviews on this one!), as well as a treat dispensing ball that we’ve yet to try out. And for Rennie and Ice Cream Star, a few bags of refills on the platypus eggs – basically just lil’, egg-shaped balls with squeakers inside. Insanely popular ’round these parts.

2015-10-29 - Walking at Wallace State Park - 0020 [flickr]

Our second trip to Wallace State Park! This time it was lucky that we left Mags at home, since the trail we chose would have been way too difficult for her: very steep, with lots of slippery rocks and trip-you-up roots. Peedee, Rennie, and Ice Cream Star all did great, though. I think Peedee’s shoulder has finally healed up, and whippersnapper Ice Cream challenges him in the best way possible. Those two are always vying for first place, leaving Rennie and Shane in the dust.

Naturally I wanted a few pictures of the dogs and I while we were out and about because, hello!, beautiful scenery. Even though I waited ’til the end of the walk – when they should be dead tired – neither Peedee nor Rennie was in the mood to cooperate. Bah humbug.

Fun story: We left Rennie and Ice Cream Star in the van (twenty feet away, windows cracked, only car in the parking lot) while Shane took some photos of Peedee and I. To say that they were unhappy with the situation was an understatement. They got a little panicked – like I’d ever abandoned Rennie before, you know? – and both dogs climbed up onto the dash (i.e., the hottest part of the car) for the best view possible. They looked damned silly, like canine versions of ye ole hula girl.

I think that’s what Peedee is looking at in this picture; that or he’s just super-eager to get in the car and go home. Probably both.

I could not hold this pose for long. My little baby boy’s gotten so freaking heavy!

2015-10-31 - Halloween Morning(ish) - 0005 [flickr]

Halloween morning(ish)! Before we started the annual Halloween Horror Movie Marathon, I just had to get some festive pics of the dogs. I broke out a devil’s tail and sequined pitchfork that mysteriously appeared in my box of dog costumes…idk, maybe my mom sent it to me? Either way, it’s really meant for humans, so adapting it for canine use required a little experimentation. The tail has a little elastic loop at the base, and I thought if maybe I attached it to what’s left of Peedee’s tail, maybe that would work…? Only, not so much. It looks less like a devil’s tail and more like explosive diarrhea. Sorry, Peeds.

Posing with a pitchfork, much better!

Mahem bores Rennie. She’ll take a squeaky ball any day of the week.

Mags, being her normal recalcitrant self. She don’t need no stinking outfit to pass as the devil, okay.

2015-10-31 - Watching Movies - 0015 [flickr]

The view from the couch. This year we watched Housebound; The Babadook; The Taking of Deborah Logan; Evil Dead; WYRMWOOD: Road Of The Dead; and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. All pretty solid picks, though The Taking of Deborah Logan, WYRMWOOD, and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night were my favorites. For sustenance, we ordered in Chinese food (spring rolls and lo mein for moi); binged on candy (which we buy every year “for the trick or treaters,” even though we’ve never gotten a single kid in the seven years we’ve been here) and donuts (Ronald’s!); and made frozen Tofurky pizzas for dinner.

2015-11-01 - Peedee (is ready for his class photo) - 0013 [flickr]

Peedee was up for some light modeling, so here you go!
I call these his “class photo” series.

Clearly, Peedee is the Queen Mean Girl in his class. JUDGING YOU.

2015-11-01 - Dogs & Sun - 0017 [flickr]

We had YET ANOTHER short stretch of spring-like weather (no doubt our last), so we spent a few afternoons stretched out in the sun (with pretty much zero shade now that the leaves have fallen), playing fetch, barking at sweet nothings, and dozing off. Even Peedee and Ice Cream Star joined us, though they’re not usually super-keen on being outdoors without something purposeful to do.

2015-11-01 - A Horde of Hounds - 0008 [flickr]

The hounds have gathered at the gate. Errr, door. I make them stay outside while I load up the van with blankets and pillows, or else they dart through the garage door and into the van, where they (by which I mean Peedee) hunker down and refuse to move, making my job difficult-to-impossible. They are not fans of this ritual, which usually involves a shit ton of barking, whining, and general cajoling.

2015-11-01 - Going to the Drive-In - 0005 [flickr]

Going to the drive-in! Now that daylight Savings Time has ended, it’s already pitch black when we leave, so. This is the best I can do, picture-wise. Sorry!

We saw Scouts Guide to the Apocalypse (which would have been tolerable if not for all the rapey stuff) and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (awful! once my french fries and slushie ran out, I lasted maybe ten minutes before falling asleep). We thought about going twice this weekend – the kid’s combo looked okay and was also Halloween-themed – and also we weren’t sure whether this weekend would be their last. Shane emailed the manager, though, and learned that they’ll be open two more weekends after this one. What with the binge watching on Saturday, we decided that two nights would be overkill. Maybe next weekend, though?

2015-11-02 - Walking at Wallace State Park - 0011 [flickr]

Mag’s hip is back to normal-ish, so we took her to Wallace State Park with us. She did pretty awesome, even on the hillier areas, though she did get tripped up by a hidden branch. There are so many leaves on the ground, it’s easy to take a spill.

Peedee, out.

So this will be my last “This Week in Pictures” post for a while. I said I wanted to finish out October, and I did – with a few extra days for good measure. I don’t know how much time Peedee has left, but I know I want to spend it with him. It’s a fine line between being realistic and defeatist. I’d be surprised if Peedee’s still with us come December – but Peedee has surprised us, time and again. Who can say for sure?

As for his health, his symptoms are a little worse than they were last week: his coughing is a little more frequent (just a bit), and sometimes it comes with a hoarse wheeze that I don’t much care for. Some nights are more restless than others, but then again he’s always been a bit of a light sleeper, going in and out of the covers, changing positions and flopping down with drama and flair. I put the fan on for him a lot, even on the chillier nights. I think he likes the air flow.

He’s okay on walks, though noticeably slower than a year or two (or even a month or two) ago. But he is thirteen now, and that wouldn’t be surprising even without the cancer.

Sunday we had a terrifying (though thankfully short) episode; Peedee was laying down – or fell down, I’m not sure which – and when he went to stand up, his back legs wouldn’t cooperate. He kind of just windmilled around. At first I thought he lost control of his back legs, but he recovered so quickly that we decided on dizziness. The episode reminded Shane of Ralphie’s vertigo, and we thought that maybe he got faint from lack of air. Better than some of the alternatives, but still worrisome re: his lung capacity.

But now for the positive, because that’s the note on which I’d rather exit. He’s still in good spirits, and enjoys many of his favorite activities: walking, modeling clothes for treats, playing with treat balls, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (Do you sense a theme here?) He’s lost a little bit of weight (says Shane; he still looks fat to me), but only because I cut back on his food the tiniest bit. (I’m not sure this extra weight is exactly good for his breathing.)

He’s really started to warm up to the foster doggeh (code name: Ice Cream Star), which is a huge relief: I was really worrying about fostering at this point in time, but I think Ice Cream has been good for him. And for me: having a new dog around is a nice distraction. Rennie likes him, too, and it’s no wonder – they are twins in spirit, if not physicality. I wish I could share some pics of them playing together. Totes adorbs. (Forgive the slang, but that’s precisely it.)

And that’s about it. I’ll post critical updates as needed. Hopefully they won’t be needed for a while yet. Fingers and toes crossed.
