The Roan Plateau is a beautifully varied landscape of wide meadows, deep canyons, and gentle trout streams. Located in northwest Colorado, the plateau hosts aspen and spruce forests, towering cliffs, and dramatic waterfalls. The Roan Plateau attracts visitors for camping, sightseeing, world class deer and elk hunting, and backcountry fly fishing. But with your help, we can save the spectacular Roan Plateau. Tell your representative to vote for a funding limitation amendment that would postpone irresponsible oil and gas drilling for one year so a plan to protect the wilderness values of the area can be developed.

Boohoo. I think I’ll save my concern for the fish y’all (they’all?) “displace” from their streams, thanks.

UPDATE, 4/24/07, via Audubon:

The Forest Service has released its draft plan and environmental impact statement (EIS) for managing the Tongass National Forest in Alaska for the next 10-15 years. Currently, the Tongass is the only national forest in the United States where road building and commercial logging are allowed in roadless areas, a result of the December 2003 decision by the current administration to exempt the Tongass from the national Roadless Rule, which prohibits most commercial logging in the remaining roadless areas of all other national forests.

Public comments on the draft plan are due Monday, April 30th. This is your opportunity to tell the Forest Service to protect the remaining intact watersheds (roadless areas) of highest ecological value in America’s largest national forest and the world’s most significant region (along with British Columbia) of old-growth temperate rainforest. The Forest Service will then review your comments and make a decision later this summer.

Protect America’s Largest National Forest

The Tongass National Forest, located in south- eastern Alaska, is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world. This home to bald eagles, spawning salmon and brown and black bears is a natural wonder that deserves our care and respect. However a new management plan from the Forest Service would allow commercial logging and development in some of the wildest areas in the forest: roadless areas home to some of the oldest and largest trees and best habitat for fish and wildlife.

The lands of the Shoshone National Forest were first protected in 1891, making it our oldest federally protected forest.
This session of Congress has seen some very encouraging movement of wilderness bills. On one exciting day in July alone, the House voted in favor of designating outstanding wilderness areas in Idaho’s Boulder-White Cloud Mountains, on Oregon’s Mount Hood, and along the north coast of California.

The progress of these and several other efforts is testament to the labors of wilderness champions in Congress as well as determined citizen activists . But time is running out and Congress must act promptly to pass these bills before the end of the congressional session, or else we will lose these hard-won wilderness victories. Contact your members of Congress today and urge them to create a wilderness legacy for future generations by passing these bills into law this year.

The BLM is moving forward in the coming days to sell leases for oil and gas development in Alaska’s Teshekpuk Lake region. Vast areas nearby are already available for energy extraction, so opening up the critical caribou and migratory bird habitat of the Teshekpuk Lake wetlands is unjustified. Ask Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne to cancel the impending lease sales in this environmentally sensitive wildlife haven.
