Earthjustice: It’s Time to Clean Up Coal Combustion Waste!

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Via Earthjustice:

It’s Time to Clean Up Coal Combustion Waste!

Millions of tons of hazardous coal ash are dumped into mines, polluting our drinking water and putting our communities’ health at risk. The federal government is considering now whether it should finally take action on how to dispose of toxic waste.

Let them know that we want the strongest protections against this pollution!

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has the opportunity to listen to the most recent scientific studies by the National Research Council and adopt enforceable standards for all states to meet when they allow coal combustion waste to be dumped into coal mines.

Please act now and send the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement your comments through June 22nd!

Earthjustice: Support Endangered Species Day on May 18!

Friday, April 20th, 2007

UPDATE, 5/16/07, via Earthjustice:

Celebrate Endangered Species Day on May 18!

It’s time to celebrate and support endangered species!

The Senate has unanimously passed a resolution designating May 18, 2007, “Endangered Species Day.” This is America’s second annual national celebration of its commitment to protecting endangered species, and once again provides an opportunity for concerned citizens, businesses, organizations, and educational institutions to come together and declare that we care about at-risk species and their habitat.

This year, our focus is on protecting imperiled species like polar bears from global warming. A recently released report from the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that 20-30 percent of animal and plant species could be at an increased risk of extinction, with up to 60 percent species loss in some areas if global warming continues unabated.

It’s important to reinforce the message that the public values protecting endangered species including polar bears, sea turtles, salmon, and the many other species being hard-hit by global warming. Please take this opportunity to thank your senators for making this important day happen!

Earthjustice: Keep Our Water Clean and Protected!

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Via Earthjustice:

Keep Our Water Clean and Protected!

For more than 30 years, the Clean Water Act has provided critical protections for our streams, lakes, wetlands, beaches, and other waters we depend on for safe drinking water, habitat for fish and wildlife, and recreation.

But long-standing federal protections for these waters are now in jeopardy. This past June, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a very deeply divided ruling that could open the floodgates to polluters that are taking every opportunity to hack away at laws designed to protect and restore our rivers, lakes, wetlands, and streams.

But Congress has an answer, and now is the time to tell your representatives that they need to reaffirm the objective of the Clean Water Act, and co-sponsor the “Clean Water Authority Restoration Act” today!

Earthjustice: Oppose Liquid Coal!

Via Earthjustice:

Oppose Liquid Coal! Our cars should be cleaner, not dirtier!

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), famous for saying, “Global warming is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people,” has proposed a misguided scheme to launch a new industry based on converting coal into transportation fuel.

Liquid coal (or coal-to-liquids) is a global warming nightmare: it produces double the carbon dioxide emissions of conventional gasoline and would be a huge step backward for efforts to combat global warming. Quite simply, liquid coal can turn a hybrid into a Hummer.

In addition to Inhofe’s proposal, there have been other bills introduced that also call for massive subsidies and loan guarantees to launch this dirty coal industry. We must act now to stop them — please take action today!

FYI: A link to a similar action alert was featured in The Sierra Club’s latest edition of Club Currents.

Earthjustice: Help Stop US Funding of Environmental and Health Contamination in Colombia!

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Via Earthjustice:

Help Stop US Funding of Environmental and Health Contamination in Colombia!

The Bush administration recently asked Congress to continue funding a devastating and ineffective herbicide spraying program in Colombia. Under the program, planes spray herbicides over large swaths of rural Colombia, harming human health and the environment. Tell Congress to find a better way!

Although the program is intended to reduce drug crop cultivation, it has been ineffective in doing so since its start in 1999. Instead, subsistence farmers have been forced to move their fields into pristine areas, threatening the habitat of hundreds of species found nowhere else in the world

Tell Congress to find a better way to fight drug cultivation and stop the harmful effects of this program.

Earthjustice: Polar Bears on Thin Ice

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Via Earthjustice:

Polar Bears on Thin Ice: They Need Protection Now

Americans understand that global warming isn’t just a future problem. The current threat to polar bears, which find their habitat literally melting away, is a clear example of the need to face global warming today.

Dramatically rising temperatures in the Arctic are melting the sea ice where polar bears live, hunt, and breed, putting the future of this majestic predator in jeopardy. The Fish and Wildlife Service has recently proposed granting much needed protections for the polar bear by listing them as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act, but the agency wants to hear from you first.

Please send a letter today in support of strong protections for polar bears struggling to survive in a vanishing habitat, and ask the administration to take immediate action to fight global warming today.
