Sheep Leaves behind Thorny Past, Enjoys Simpler Life at New York Shelter

Hidden within a labyrinth of brush, Thistle passed nearly seven years out of sight and out of mind on a farm in New York. Here, she foraged for meals daily and watched helplessly as animals died around her. Leaving her all alone, Thistle’s only companion was hauled away—a horse who was tied to the back of a truck and led to a home miles down the road. Unable to persevere any more, Thistle cried out in despair—a sound that alerted neighbors to her pain and facilitated her rescue by our staff. Read more.

In Loving Memory: Neptune

If you have ever visited our California Shelter, chances are you remember meeting and spending time with a wise old goat named Neptune. Named for the mighty Roman god of the sea, the regal goat ruled over our west coast sanctuary since it opened nearly 14 years ago. From then until the sorrowful day we said goodbye to our beloved friend, Neptune made a profound impact on his human admirers and changed nearly all our lives for the better. This last tribute is one of gratitude—just for him. Read more.

Motherless Lambs Struggle for Second Chance at Life

Early in November, our New York Shelter responded to an urgent plea from the Ulster County SPCA to assist with the care and placement of ten newborn lambs. Found motherless, cold and starving in central New York, the suckling babies were the only survivors out of a group of 20 helpless animals—who were purchased and left to fend for themselves in a frightening, lonely world. Now dependent upon the mercy of humans for survival, the lambs were in desperate need of safe refuge, ‘round-the-clock intensive care and constant, loving attention—needs we were more than happy to fulfill. 2007 Farm Bill Reaches Critical Juncture

With the Senate poised to recess for the year, the 2007 Farm Bill—a massive piece of legislation that will set policy on all aspects of agriculture for the next five years—has reached a critical juncture and may be debated over and voted on by senators next week. The livestock industry is already lobbying hard to protect its interests, so the time is ripe for you to contact your senators too and share your input on three potential amendments—which could profoundly affect the lives of farm animals. You can help.

California Ballot Campaign Update!

With just three months left of the signature gathering portion of the California ballot campaign, we urge you to get involved! This monumental initiative will prohibit some of the cruelest forms of confinement in industrialized animal agriculture – calves in veal crates, breeding pigs in gestation crates and laying hens in battery cages. If you live in California, or know anyone residing in the state, please urge them to get involved in this life-changing measure! Time is ticking for the animals and we need your help!

Take Action to Prevent Cloning!

The cloning of farm animals is a hot-button issue both for animal protection and consumer protection groups, because cloned animals frequently suffer from fatal, congenital defects—including weakened immune systems; dysfunctional hearts, brains, livers, and kidneys; respiratory distress; and circulatory problems—all of which lead to pain and early death. And now, thanks to an amendment drafted by U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Arlen Specter (R-PA), we have a chance to stop the haphazard cloning of animals for the human food supply. Please take action now!

38 Turkey Peeps Spared from Certain Death on Factory Farm

Looking into the bright, innocent eyes of Sullivan, it is hard to comprehend the suffering he endured only weeks ago—let alone the bleak future he would have faced had he not found refuge at Farm Sanctuary. Left on our doorstep with 37 other peeps, Sullivan’s place of origin will forever remain a mystery. But careful inspection of his and the other babies’ beaks and toes, all of which bear evidence of abuse, reveals enough to mark them as the victims of one of our nation’s cruelest institutions: the factory farm. Activist Of The Month: Jean Liebenberg

Jean Liebenberg had been vegetarian for 26 years before she set foot on Farm Sanctuary grounds. But from the moment she visited and met her adoptive “daughter,” Angie pig, Jean was hooked. Now Jean is a tireless volunteer, who has sponsored three of our farm animal friends, invited two rescued bunnies into her home, and devoted countless hours volunteering at our New York Shelter. Read all about Jean’s journey and be inspired to make a difference for farm animals!

Take Action on the Farm Bill— Ask Senators for Vegetables, Not Veal

As the U.S. Senate nears a vote on its version of the Farm Bill, factory farming interests are lobbying hard to hold onto or reinstate unfair subsidies at the expense of animals, taxpayers and the environment. The Farm Bill will set agricultural policy for the next five years, so activists must take action today to stop the subsidization of cruelty. Tell your senators to say “no” to veal industry subsidies and support amendments from the FRESH Act— an alternative bill that eliminates excessive appropriations for factory farms and gives real assistance to produce growers.

From Meth Lab to Sanctuary, Jade and Indigo Enjoy Second Chance at Life

Confined in cages, the birds’ needs were disregarded, their health faltered, and, when they were no longer of any use to their “owners,” they were left to die. The scenario sounds sadly familiar to anyone well versed in the reality of industrialized egg farming, but the circumstances that brought Jade and Indigo to Farm Sanctuary are quite different—yet just as despicable. Rescued from a meth lab in northern California, the duo shares a traumatic past. But today they’re thriving at our California Shelter. Read more.

Happy & Humane Halloween

Nothing is more frightening than cruel candy made with gelatin (the skin, tissue or bones of animals) and “natural” coloring derived from insects or other animal sources. This year, give little goblins and ghouls Halloween treats to delight their taste buds, while protecting our animal friends. Many candies found on store shelves are conveniently vegan so feel free to indulge trick-or-treaters with these eerily tasty sweets.

Groundbreaking Effort for Farm Animals Underway in California

Farm Sanctuary, in conjunction with The Humane Society of the United States, has launched a ground-breaking ballot initiative effort to outlaw some of the most inhumane farm animal confinement systems in the state: veal crates for baby calves, gestation crates for mother pigs and battery cages for laying hens.

On October 1, 2007 citizens throughout the state began a massive effort to gather the 650,000 signatures needed to qualify the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act (www.humanecalifornia.org/) for placement on the September 2008 California ballot. Volunteers have only about five months to complete their signature-gathering efforts to achieve this goal—and help save millions of farm animals a year from tremendous suffering. Your help is needed!

If you are a California resident, please contact Californians for Humane Farms (www.humanecalifornia.org/) and find out how you can participate in this historic effort for farm animals.

***If you are not a California resident, please forward this email to all your friends and family members who live in California.

BREAKING NEWS: Eight Turkeys Chosen For Adopt-A-Turkey Project

Photo via decade_resister

Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA — After weeks of speculation and nail-pecking drama, Farm Sanctuary today announced its 2007 roster of Adopt-A-Turkey Project participants.

Cicada, Luna, Feather, Juniper, Magnolia, Moth, Oak and Pearl will step into the spotlight as the illustrious group chosen to be the face of Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project.

Started in 1986, the Adopt-A-Turkey Project invites the public to sponsor a turkey for only $20. The funding provides food, bedding and tender loving care to Farm Sanctuary’s turkey flock.

“Farm Sanctuary stepped up its game this year with these Adopt-A-Turkey selections,” mooed Larry, Farm Sanctuary’s spokescow. “This group’s palpable charm is matched only by their quick wit and head-turning good looks.”

Each turkey will be available for a face-to-face meet-and-greet Nov. 17 at the annual Celebration FOR the Turkeys: www.adoptaturkey.org/turkey_celebration07.htm.

Act Now to Close Borders to Prevent Slaughter of Horses

A recent Appeals Court decision upholding Illinois’ law banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption has closed down the final horse slaughterhouse in the U.S. Unfortunately, while horse slaughter has been effectively shut down here, the number of horses shipped to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada has more than tripled in the past year. To counteract this, Congress is considering the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 311, H.R. 503), to ensure the ban on horse slaughter and stop the shipment of American horses over U.S. borders for the purpose of slaughtering them for overseas human consumption. Ask Canadian Government to Investigate Canada’s Foie Gras Industry

Farm Sanctuary, in cooperation with Canadian group Global Action Network (GAN), has released Round 2 of its investigation into the Canadian foie gras industry. The undercover footage shot at Aux Champs D’Elise and Palmex, the second and third-largest foie gras producers in Canada respectively, further confirms the immense cruelty inherent in the production of foie gras.

Video and photographic evidence from Palmex and Champs D’Elise show ducks suffering the gruesome after-effects of force feeding: ducks gasping for breath, choking blood and regurgitated food, many barely able to hold up their heads. Others are shown dead in their cages, having succumbed to the debilitating effects of being force fed up to a third of their own body weight daily.

In addition to dead and dying ducks, undercover footage shot over a 5-day period by an investigator working at Aux Champs D’Elise depicts shocking acts of cruelty: employees bashing the heads of ducks against the concrete floor, hurling them through the air by their necks and even sawing off an animal’s head, all while the ducks are fully conscious.

See for yourself. Watch Farm Sanctuary’s video, “Culinary Cruelty: Undercover in Canada” and distribute this alert widely:

Livestock Truck Catastrophes Highlight The Need For Reform

An alarming number of farm animals die regularly in catastrophic highway accidents when the trucks hauling huge loads of these animals overturn. In the past week, the media reported on at least two such incidents, each of which resulted in massive mortality and suffering for the animals involved. Despite this industry-wide problem, neither the U.S. Department of Agriculture nor the agribusiness industry has adequately addressed the issue. As a result, farm animals are subjected to yet another level of unnecessary suffering. Farm Sanctuary is urging the USDA to establish a protocol to prevent these accidents from happening in the first place and to respond to these accidents when they happen in a way that will minimize animal suffering. Nightmare Over For Goats Rescued In New York Cruelty Case

Nobody knows how long they stood inside the transport trailer, or what condition they were in when they entered. What we do know is how they looked when they emerged. Emaciated. Lice-ridden. Weak and scared. Though Allene, Dorothy and Cathy were in bad shape, their condition was heads above that of the other animals found on a property in central New York this spring. In sum, 43 goats were found dead. Now rehabilitated and nursed back to health, these girls call our New York Shelter home—and are ready to make the most of their second chance at life. Read more.

Daring Dash Around Queens Lands Renegade Cow At New York Shelter

Today, Maxine munched on sweet hay in her pen in Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter cattle barn. The young Hereford cow was soaking up the peace and quiet, the tranquility quite a bit different than what she experienced not 72 hours ago, when she ran for her life through the streets of Queens, N.Y. Maxine likely escaped from one of New York City’s many slaughterhouses, auctions or live markets, but, like Joey the goat and Lucky Lady before her, Maxine’s quest for freedom was a rousing success. Support Funding For Produce; Reject Animal Agriculture Subsidies

Within the next few weeks, the U.S. Senate will debate the 2007 Farm Bill, which will set agricultural policy for years to come. The Farm Bill is particularly important for farm animal protection because it contains various measures that address funding for the factory farming industry. Traditionally, Congress has disproportionately allocated funding toward animal factory farms, while leaving fruit and vegetable farmers lacking for support. However, this year, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) is proposing a measure that will rectify this inequality and route money toward produce growers and away from factory animal farm operations. Read more.

Rescued Hens Shed Light on Horrors of New York City’s Live Markets

Dianna and 29 other hens came to the New York Shelter at the tail end of August, the animals taking refuge from the horrors of New York City’s live markets. Live markets proliferate in the city’s five boroughs; nearly 175 are open for business. At these markets, customers select from chickens, goats, cows, sheep and turkeys, who are then killed on the premises. Many of the animals are kept in filthy conditions and visibly ill.

Now the hens are safe and sound at Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter, and they’re in need of loving sponsors. Read more.

Please Take Action to Pass the Philly Foie Gras Prohibition

On the heels of the successful passage of Chicago’s foie gras ban, Philadelphia City Councilman Jack Kelly has introduced similar legislation to ban foie gras. Predictably, Councilman Kelly’s bill is drawing fire from some restaurants in Philadelphia. But as these restaurants turn up the heat on the City Council to maintain the cruel status quo, we need to turn up our voices to change it. Please take action to let the President of the City Council know that Philadelphia can’t afford to not ban foie gras cruelty. We need every animal protection advocate in the U.S. to speak up in support of Philadelphia’s proposed foie gras ban. To find out how you can help, visit: www.farmsanctuary.org/campaign/state_Phili.htm.

Urge California Prosecutor to Bring Stockyard to Justice

In January 2007, a Farm Sanctuary investigator documented the suffering of a downed calf and a dairy cow at the Escalon Livestock Market in Escalon, California. The dairy cow had reportedly given birth at the stockyard earlier that morning before slipping and falling in an aisle, where she lay suffering for hours and unable to stand. Additionally, a downed calf, whom we named Clover, was rushed to a veterinarian by the Farm Sanctuary investigator for emergency treatment but did not survive. Stockyard workers were aware of these suffering animals, but did nothing to help them – a clear violation of CA law. Please write to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s office and urge them to prosecute the Escalon Livestock Market for violating California’s downed animal protection law. Read more.

Eagle Scout Project Creates Soaring Structure for New York Shelter Goats

Elvis and Jerry Lee took a keen interest in the actions of Matt Saginario. They watched him pound nails into a nearby 4-by-4; eye-balled him as he measured, then cut a piece of rough hewn wood. Maybe the two New York Shelter goats were watching so intently because they knew what was—quite literally—up: the skeleton of a multi-tiered goat jungle gym. Saginario is an aspiring Eagle Scout, and the construction of the goat jungle gym fulfills one component of his work toward that end. Read more.

American Veterinary Medical Association Fails to Stand Against Cruelty

Once again the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has failed to take a position on one of the cruelest and most inhumane production methods used by agribusiness: the forced feeding of ducks and geese in the foie gras industry. Unfortunately, this is not a new trend by the AVMA. The association has also failed to take a position on veal crates, gestation crates and battery cages. Agribusiness has too much influence over the AVMA, and thus, the organization has defended inhumane practices. However, a growing number of veterinarians are opposed to the cruel methods used by the agriculture industry, and they are beginning to voice their concerns. Find out what you can do to encourage the AVMA to take a position on these cruel methods.

Piglets Endure Harrowing Start, Survive and Thrive at New York Shelter

Traditional wisdom holds that siblings tend to fight and bicker. The four pink piglets now living at our New York Shelter would beg to differ. Emily, Dennis, Farley and Ogar had been through a rough piglethood together, seized from the grips of a squatter living illegally on an abandoned piece of property in Maryland. When he was arrested for trespassing, they were left out in the cold. The quartet was taken in by a local humane agency that contacted Farm Sanctuary. Now they’re safe at our New York Shelter, and are looking for loving sponsors! Read more.

Help Rescue and Protect Farm Animals With Every Step You Take!

Join Farm Sanctuary this fall as we take the message of compassion for farm animals to the streets. Cities across the country will be holding walkathons to raise needed funds for farm animal rescue and protection efforts. In addition, the Walks are an excellent way to educate others about the cruelties endured by farm animals. Let’s Walk so that no pig, cow or chicken will ever again be kept in a crate or be forced to live in crammed, filthy quarters. The Walks, occurring every fall are generally 3-6 miles long (5K-10K) and are held in public parks, along busy city streets and on college campuses. All walkers who raise more than $100 receive Farm Sanctuary prizes!

REGISTRATION

There is a $10 registration fee that entitles each registrant to a Walk for Farm Animals T-shirt! To reserve your T-shirt, please register no later than three weeks prior to the Walk. (If you register the day of the Walk, the fee is $15 and, unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that you will receive a T-shirt.) To register, click here. Click on the Get Started button at the bottom of the page and follow the instructions.

After registering, you will begin collecting pledges. It is now easier than ever for you to collect pledges by creating your own online fund-raising page and emailing it out to your friends, family, co-workers, and members of your community. Sign up today to make a difference for farm animals!

American Veal Association Announces Resolution to Phase in Group Housing

Earlier this year, the American Veal Association (AVA) voted to phase out the notoriously cruel veal crate confinement system and replace them with group housing systems. Measuring just 2 feet wide and allowing no freedom of movement, veal crates have been long considered one of the cruelest institutions in factory farming. The announced phase out, which is supposed to be complete by 2017, is significant and illustrates that growing consumer awareness is starting to have an impact, but there is still much work to be done. Please visit www.noveal.org to find out the next steps in curtailing the cruelties of the veal industry.

At New York Shelter, Baby Goats Overcome Malnutrition, Rough Start

Skye and Summer were seized from a backyard in New York City, found incarcerated in a box and standing in piles of their own feces. In addition to having been starved, both babies suffered from heavy parasite loads, not an uncommon condition for animals who had endured the kind of neglect Skye and Summer had. Only skin and bones when they arrived at our New York Shelter, TLC and medical attention have put the babies on the long road to recovery. Read more.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. For more information about Farm Sanctuary or our programs, please visit www.farmsanctuary.org or call 607-583-2225. Farm Sanctuary’s E-News & Action Alert 08/02/07

Downed Animals Still Need Your Help

August is a great month to communicate with your federal legislator, and specifically, their staff member who handles the downed animal issue!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has just made the temporary ban on slaughtering downed cattle permanent. However, there are still loopholes in the law. While we applaud the upgrade from temporary to permanent, it is critical that Congress and the USDA include cattle who are incapacitated outside the slaughterhouse (while at stockyards and in transit), and downed animals other than cattle. The new permanent ban covers neither.

The Downed Animal Protection and Food Safety Act will help prevent the suffering of cows, pigs or sheep who are too sick or crippled to walk or stand. These animals may be beaten, dragged with chains or otherwise terribly abused. Your help is needed to advance this measure. Visit: www.nodowners.org/how2help.htm

In addition, Congress is “out of session” for most of August, leaving staff members with additional time to research issues and develop key relationships with constituents. Therefore, now is a great time to speak to your legislator’s staff about your concerns regarding downers. Read more.

Farm Animal of the Month: Molly the Goat

She doesn’t need a mortarboard or gown—her mangled ear and the scars on her chest tell the story: Molly the goat graduated from the School of Hard Knocks. A resident of our California Sanctuary since 2002, Molly lives on her own terms. And at Farm Sanctuary, she has the freedom and support to do just that. Read more.

Meet Bill Schramm, whose nearly 40-year journey toward a world without animal exploitation started with a single step: going vegetarian. If you need ideas on how to make the world a better place for farm animals, look no further than Bill Schramm’s living legacy! Read more.

The 2007 Farm Bill – On the Floor this Week!; Use Your Voice to Help Farm Animals

The 2007 Farm Bill (HR 2419) is scheduled for debate by the House of Representatives today and tomorrow. This legislation includes a variety of issues including agriculture, nutrition and conservation. The version of the bill going to the floor today was improved significantly when the House Agriculture Committee responded to animal advocates’ calls and voted to remove both a $12 million veal subsidy and Section 123 (which would have threatened to dismantle virtually all state and local farm animal protection legislation). However, due to the broadness of the bill, there is ample opportunity for new amendments to be added, both those which are positive for animals and those which are detrimental. Please take action now to ensure that Congress acts responsibly by considering farm animals and reducing the funds that go to large-scale corporate animal agribusiness. Go to the Farm Sanctuary website to act now: www.farmsanctuary.org/actionalerts/update_farmbill_7_07.htm! Time is of the essence.

Animal Rescues Provide Opportunity for Action

Farm Sanctuary’s 2003 rescue efforts in Canisteo, N.Y., not only got badly abused animals to sanctuary, but it also provided an opportunity for people around the nation to help those in need. Programs like Adopt-A-Farm Animal have allowed Ramsey, a sheep taken from the nightmare in Canisteo, to thrive—and finally have a full, normal life. Farm Sanctuary also offers in-home placements through its Farm Animal Adoption Network, a more hands-on way to directly aid animals who have suffered. Read more.
