Urge California Prosecutor to Bring Stockyard to Justice

In January 2007, a Farm Sanctuary investigator documented the suffering of a downed calf and a dairy cow at the Escalon Livestock Market in Escalon, California. The dairy cow had reportedly given birth at the stockyard earlier that morning before slipping and falling in an aisle, where she lay suffering for hours and unable to stand. Additionally, a downed calf, whom we named Clover, was rushed to a veterinarian by the Farm Sanctuary investigator for emergency treatment but did not survive. Stockyard workers were aware of these suffering animals, but did nothing to help them – a clear violation of CA law. Please write to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s office and urge them to prosecute the Escalon Livestock Market for violating California’s downed animal protection law. Read more.

Eagle Scout Project Creates Soaring Structure for New York Shelter Goats

Elvis and Jerry Lee took a keen interest in the actions of Matt Saginario. They watched him pound nails into a nearby 4-by-4; eye-balled him as he measured, then cut a piece of rough hewn wood. Maybe the two New York Shelter goats were watching so intently because they knew what was—quite literally—up: the skeleton of a multi-tiered goat jungle gym. Saginario is an aspiring Eagle Scout, and the construction of the goat jungle gym fulfills one component of his work toward that end. Read more.

American Veterinary Medical Association Fails to Stand Against Cruelty

Once again the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has failed to take a position on one of the cruelest and most inhumane production methods used by agribusiness: the forced feeding of ducks and geese in the foie gras industry. Unfortunately, this is not a new trend by the AVMA. The association has also failed to take a position on veal crates, gestation crates and battery cages. Agribusiness has too much influence over the AVMA, and thus, the organization has defended inhumane practices. However, a growing number of veterinarians are opposed to the cruel methods used by the agriculture industry, and they are beginning to voice their concerns. Find out what you can do to encourage the AVMA to take a position on these cruel methods.

Piglets Endure Harrowing Start, Survive and Thrive at New York Shelter

Traditional wisdom holds that siblings tend to fight and bicker. The four pink piglets now living at our New York Shelter would beg to differ. Emily, Dennis, Farley and Ogar had been through a rough piglethood together, seized from the grips of a squatter living illegally on an abandoned piece of property in Maryland. When he was arrested for trespassing, they were left out in the cold. The quartet was taken in by a local humane agency that contacted Farm Sanctuary. Thinking Big for the Animals

Caring people from across the continent traveled to Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter this summer to recharge their batteries and reinforce their commitment to animal protection as well as social and environmental advocacy. Participants in the Sowing Seeds Workshop, led by the Institute for Humane Education, learned activities and tips for teaching on the topics of consumerism, media, animal protection, environmental preservation, and social justice. Join Farm Sanctuary this fall as we take the message of compassion for farm animals to the streets. Cities across the country will be holding walkathons to raise needed funds for farm animal rescue and protection efforts. In addition, the Walks are an excellent way to educate others about the cruelties endured by farm animals. Let’s Walk so that no pig, cow or chicken will ever again be kept in a crate or be forced to live in crammed, filthy quarters. The Walks, occurring every fall are generally 3-6 miles long (5K-10K) and are held in public parks, along busy city streets and on college campuses. All walkers who raise more than $100 receive Farm Sanctuary prizes!

American Veal Association Announces Resolution to Phase in Group Housing

Earlier this year, the American Veal Association (AVA) voted to phase out the notoriously cruel veal crate confinement system and replace them with group housing systems. Measuring just 2 feet wide and allowing no freedom of movement, veal crates have been long considered one of the cruelest institutions in factory farming. The announced phase out, which is supposed to be complete by 2017, is significant and illustrates that growing consumer awareness is starting to have an impact, but there is still much work to be done. At New York Shelter, Baby Goats Overcome Malnutrition, Rough Start

Skye and Summer were seized from a backyard in New York City, found incarcerated in a box and standing in piles of their own feces. In addition to having been starved, both babies suffered from heavy parasite loads, not an uncommon condition for animals who had endured the kind of neglect Skye and Summer had. Only skin and bones when they arrived at our New York Shelter, TLC and medical attention have put the babies on the long road to recovery. Read more.

Downed Animals Still Need Your Help

August is a great month to communicate with your federal legislator, and specifically, their staff member who handles the downed animal issue!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has just made the temporary ban on slaughtering downed cattle permanent. However, there are still loopholes in the law. While we applaud the upgrade from temporary to permanent, it is critical that Congress and the USDA include cattle who are incapacitated outside the slaughterhouse (while at stockyards and in transit), and downed animals other than cattle. The new permanent ban covers neither.

The Downed Animal Protection and Food Safety Act will help prevent the suffering of cows, pigs or sheep who are too sick or crippled to walk or stand. These animals may be beaten, dragged with chains or otherwise terribly abused. Your help is needed to advance this measure. Visit: www.nodowners.org/how2help.htm

In addition, Congress is “out of session” for most of August, leaving staff members with additional time to research issues and develop key relationships with constituents. Therefore, now is a great time to speak to your legislator’s staff about your concerns regarding downers. Read more.

The 2007 Farm Bill – On the Floor this Week!; Use Your Voice to Help Farm Animals

The 2007 Farm Bill (HR 2419) is scheduled for debate by the House of Representatives today and tomorrow. This legislation includes a variety of issues including agriculture, nutrition and conservation. The version of the bill going to the floor today was improved significantly when the House Agriculture Committee responded to animal advocates’ calls and voted to remove both a $12 million veal subsidy and Section 123 (which would have threatened to dismantle virtually all state and local farm animal protection legislation). However, due to the broadness of the bill, there is ample opportunity for new amendments to be added, both those which are positive for animals and those which are detrimental. Please take action now to ensure that Congress acts responsibly by considering farm animals and reducing the funds that go to large-scale corporate animal agribusiness. Animal Rescues Provide Opportunity for Action

Farm Sanctuary’s 2003 rescue efforts in Canisteo, N.Y., not only got badly abused animals to sanctuary, but it also provided an opportunity for people around the nation to help those in need. USDA’s Downed Cattle Ban Now Permanent

The USDA recently made permanent its prohibition on slaughtering downed cattle for human food. The interim policy was first instituted at the end of 2003 after a downed cow in the U.S. was confirmed to have mad cow disease. We are very pleased that this ban is now permanent, but still concerned that other downed animals, including pigs, can be transported and slaughtered for human food. We are also uneasy that the downed animal ban allows too much leeway in the case of downed veal calves, whom it allows to be set aside and held for treatment and re-inspection. Farm Sanctuary maintains the position we have held since 1986–namely, that downed animals should not be transported and slaughtered for human food, and that the industry should be required to take better care of the animals to prevent them from going down in the first place. Farm Sanctuary has just released new and shocking undercover footage taken at Elevages Perigord, Canada’s largest foie gras production facility. Canada is responsible for a large percentage of the foie gras imported into the U.S. annually.
