Greenpeace: Speak Up for Steller Sea Lions

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Via Greenpeace:

Speak Up for Steller Sea Lions

Endangered Steller sea lions are fighting to survive in the waters of the Bering Sea, Alaska. They’re in a battle with factory trawlers, who are snatching up fish and tearing up ocean habitats that Stellers depend on for survival. Without enough food and ocean safe havens, the Steller sea lion population has declined dramatically. While the sea lions fight off starvation, the government is dragging its feet on implementing Endangered Species Act protections.

Take Action >> Tell the government to give maximum protection to these magnificent creatures.

Greening the intertubes (and the halls of Congress)

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

As promised, a roundup of recent green legislative alerts. So many bills, so little time. Even a link dump feels like heavy lifting.

Audubon: Better Fuel Standards for a Clean Future

The U.S. Senate is debating America’s energy policy, and we need to make sure that any energy legislation includes at least some increase in corporate average fuel economy standards (CAFE), which have not been improved in over 25 years. Raising the fuel economy of cars and trucks reduces our addiction to oil, helps to clear our skies and reduces global warming pollution. This is off-the-shelf technology we have right now, but we need Congress to act.

Please write to your U.S. Senators and tell them to oppose the Levin-Stabenow amendment to weaken the modest CAFE standards in HR 6.

Greenpeace: Put Congressional Leaders in the Hot Seat

When the Democrats took over they promised bold action on global warming. Now halfway through the year and two weeks before the 4th of July recess, it appears that the first major action on energy in the House of Representatives will take us in the wrong direction. Instead of creating an energy bill that solves global warming, the legislation that has emerged thus far protects the auto and coal industry.

Chairmen John Dingell and Rick Boucher are proving to be poor leaders in the important fight to create sensible energy policies and to stop global warming. The chairmen of the House Energy and Commerce Committee are doing just the opposite of what the Democratic majority said they would do—push for smart energy policies and attack global warming head on.

America needs real leadership on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, not more of the same.

Take Action>>Tell Speaker Pelosi to use her power as Speaker of the House and get Congress back on track.

True Majority: Tell Congress – “You’re in the Hot Seat”

It’s now or never for Congress to get serious about global warming. Scientists tell us that if we don’t put a cap on global warming pollution and reduce emissions 80% by 2050 that the situation could become completely out of control. So we’re turning up the heat on Congress and demanding that they support strong action to solve global warming. Help us reach our goal of 50,000 signatures nationally by August by adding your name to the list. Let your Rep. know that “We’re counting on you: You’re in the Hot Seat.”

Union of Concerned Scientists: Our Chance to Raise Fuel Economy Standards is Here!

The average fuel economy of American automobiles hasn’t changed in decades, despite steady advances in vehicle technology. More fuel-efficient cars would give American drivers much-needed savings at the pump while helping to reduce our oil dependence and global warming pollution. Now is our chance to lock-in stronger fuel economy standards for all vehicles! As early as tomorrow, the Senate will vote on an Energy Bill provision that would raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020.

Please call your senators and tell them to support CAFE reform of at least 35 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks by 2020 with no loopholes. Any attempts to weaken this long overdue reform will be a vote for higher gas prices and continued oil dependence.

Greenpeace: Global Warming SOS

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Via Greenpeace:

Global Warming SOS

The latest news about the impacts of global warming is out, and scientists’ predictions include everything from mass extinctions to food and water shortages. And the impacts are already being felt around the world. So in light of all of this dire news, it’s time for Congress to take action. And surprise, surprise, some of them actually are!

After years of inaction by the Bush Administration, Congress has finally taken matters into their own hands with a science-based, long-term solution to global warming. Help build support for critical action on global warming, contact your representative today. We owe it to ourselves, future generations, and to the planet to stop global warming now, before it’s too late.

Take Action >> Tell Congress to pass the Safe Climate Act.

Greenpeace: Tasty News from Apple

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

Via Greenpeace:

Tasty News from Apple

You did it! Thousands of you wrote, called, and sent cards to Steve Jobs, asking him to green your Apples. Because of you, he listened, and just announced a greener Apple.

Apple has agreed to peel toxic chemicals like Brominated Fire Retardants (BFRs) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), out of their product line by 2008. These are genuine steps forward.

But we want an Apple with more than a green skin, we want Apple to go green to the core. We want Apple to deliver a green product on the market, and to announce a worldwide recycling policy.

Take Action >> Thank Steve Jobs for his efforts, and ask him for more than a few slices. Ask for a whole green Apple.

Earthjustice: Oppose Liquid Coal!

Via Earthjustice:

Oppose Liquid Coal! Our cars should be cleaner, not dirtier!

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), famous for saying, “Global warming is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people,” has proposed a misguided scheme to launch a new industry based on converting coal into transportation fuel.

Liquid coal (or coal-to-liquids) is a global warming nightmare: it produces double the carbon dioxide emissions of conventional gasoline and would be a huge step backward for efforts to combat global warming. Quite simply, liquid coal can turn a hybrid into a Hummer.

In addition to Inhofe’s proposal, there have been other bills introduced that also call for massive subsidies and loan guarantees to launch this dirty coal industry. We must act now to stop them — please take action today!

FYI: A link to a similar action alert was featured in The Sierra Club’s latest edition of Club Currents.

Greenpeace: Polar Bears on Thin Ice

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Via Greenpeace:

Polar Bears on Thin Ice

Global warming is melting the Arctic sea ice at an alarming rate, taking with it the vital habitat of polar bears and other wildlife. The last two years were the worst ever recorded for sea ice loss. If current trends continue, the Arctic will be ice free in summer by 2040, depriving polar bears of the hunting and denning grounds they need to survive. In response to a successful lawsuit by Greenpeace and others, the Bush Administration decided last December to recommend polar bears for protection under the Endangered Species Act. Yet the Administration also signaled it would do nothing to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that drive global warming. Without such reductions, global warming will continue and the polar bear – and many other species – will disappear.

The Bush Administration has asked for public input on whether and how to protect the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act. Let them know you support the polar bear, and demand the curbs on greenhouse gas emissions necessary to ensure its survival.

Take Action >> Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that the polar bear needs endangered species protection NOW!

Greenpeace: Life and Death Situation in Antarctica

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Via Greenpeace:

Life and Death Situation in Antarctica

The whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru has been crippled by an accidental fire and is currently without engine power in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Oil and fuel aboard the ship presents an unacceptable risk to the pristine Antarctic environment, and the ice and weather are closing in.

The Greenpeace ship, Esperanza, has offered to tow the Nisshin Maru to safety. The Esperanza was constructed as a fire-fighting vessel and has towing capabilities. Her captain has ten years experience on a salvage tug.

Bureaucrats in Tokyo have rejected Greenpeace’s offers of assistance, despite pressure from the New Zealand government and Japan’s obligations under the Antarctic Treaty to accept help.

Please ask the Japanese Environment Minister to do the right thing for the crew of the Nisshin Maru and the Antarctic environment: don’t wait for the situation to worsen. Accept Greenpeace’s offer to tow the ship.
