Greenpeace: We love Japan, but whaling breaks our hearts!

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Via Greenpeace:

We love Japan, but whaling breaks our hearts!

This Valentine’s Day, we’ll show love for whales by doing our best to keep the harpoons from striking a whale’s heart. But you don’t have to be here in the Southern Ocean to join us in our efforts to defend the whales.

We know you love whales too, and there’s no greater gift we could give them than to end commercial whaling forever.

So in honor of Valentine’s Day, there are a couple of things you can do to show your love for whales.

1. Take Action >> Send a special Valentine’s message to the Bush Administration professing your love of whales

2. Demonstrate Your Love >> Download one of our signs and take a picture of yourself holding it then upload it and show the world how much you care about defending the whales.

Please, spare us the heartbreak of returning to the Southern Ocean next year. Help us put an end to whaling once and for all.

Greenpeace: The State of Global Warming

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Via Greenpeace:

The State of Global Warming

President Bush has let the issue of global warming simmer on the back burner of his presidency for 6 years. His so-called solutions of “clean” coal and nuclear energy are a recipe for disaster.

Well, we’re serving up a fresh new alternative to global warming with real solutions that don’t rely on nuclear energy or coal. In fact, renewable energy and conservation can deliver half of the world’s energy needs by 2050.

The President has failed to lead this country, or the world, on the issue of global warming. It’s up to Congress to pull us out of the global warming fire, and time is running out.

Take Action >> Tell Congress to turn the oven down.

A slew of anti-Big Oil/pro-clean energy action alerts for the 110th Congress

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

UPDATE, 1/22/07:

As many of you know, HR6 passed the House on Thursday; you can read the full text of the bill here.

Says Ayinde O. Chase of All Headline News,

On Thursday the House of Representatives passed the CLEAN Energy Act (H.R. 6), which rolls back subsidies and tax breaks for Big Oil, by a vote of 264 to 163. The bill specifically aims to close certain tax loopholes available to big oil companies, and collect royalties from oil and gas produced in public waters. The legislation when enforced will shift more than $14 billion from certain subsidies to investments in clean energy, such as energy-efficient technologies and renewable power. […]

The monies collected could be directed to:

- spur the construction of wind and solar energy power generation facilities

- provide incentives for energy-efficient appliances, buildings and equipment

- enable more people to purchase gas-saving hybrid cars and trucks […]

An Apollo Alliance study discovered that a major investment in alternative energy technologies has the potential of adding more than 3.3 million new jobs to the nation’s economy, stimulating $1.4 trillion dollars in new Gross Domestic Product, and eventually paying for itself in a 10-year time span.

Sweet.

My favorite headline come from Salon: “Big Oil gets punked” (!).

Earthjustice recommends sending your rep a thank you, that is, if she or he is deserving of one. Otherwise, ignore the twit and vote against him/her in the next election cycle.

—————–

With Congress slated to vote on the clean energy portion of their 100 Hours agenda later this week, the action alerts are coming at my inbox, fast and furious. Rather than post each individually, here’s a roundup of those that call on Congress to end subsidies for Big Oil, support clean energy, and/or vote yes on H.R. 6. I’ll add new ones to the top of the list as they arrive.

Greenpeace: All I want this year is a green Apple

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

Via Greenpeace:

All I want this year is a green Apple

‘Tis the season, and stockings are being stuffed with ipods, and Macs nestled under the tree. But not all is well in Whoville, and there’s a grinch of a surprise inside these Apple gifts: toxic chemicals. And as last year’s gifts are tossed to make way for shiny new Apples, they will likely find their way to developing countries, where children of all ages will unwrap and unleash the toxic chemicals within.

Well, there’s no place like New York to light up the night with a holiday wish. We’ve been telling Apple to go green for years, and tonight, more than 60 activists took to the streets of New York to shine green lights on Apple’s iconic 5th Avenue store. Now it’s your turn to shine a green spotlight on Apple.

Send Apple a special holiday card and tell Steve Jobs that all you wish for is a green Apple.

Greenpeace: Danger in Bristol Bay!

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

Via Greenpeace:

Danger in Bristol Bay!

President George Bush might be on the verge of lifting the moratorium on oil and gas development in Alaska’s Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay hosts the world’s largest wild salmon run and is home to countless whales, seals, walrus and fish, as well as Alaska Native communities dependent on these resources. So much of Alaska is already open to oil and gas development, we can’t risk damaging the delicate ecosystem of Bristol Bay with the threats posed by oil and gas development.

Greenpeace: Breaking News - Protest at Kleenex Factory

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Via Greenpeace:

Breaking News - Protest at Kleenex Factory

Kleenex, one of the most popular brands of tissue products in the world, contributes to the destruction of ancient forests. Its manufacturer, the Kimberly-Clark corporation, has been unwilling to improve its practices, continuing to rely on paper and pulp made from clearcut ancient forest including Canada’s Boreal forest.

Moments ago, Greenpeace activists drove a Kleenex shaped bus across the entrance of Kimberly-Clark’s paper mill. It is at the access point to one of the largest mills in the country. This busy mill receives thousands of tons of ancient trees throughout the year, so our action is sure to get the company’s immediate attention.

You can help by encouraging Kimberly-Clark to meet with us right now!

Greenpeace: Ask the US gov’t to establish no-take marine reserves

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Via Greenpeace:

Right now there are opportunities to make significant steps towards creating networks of marine reserves. The US government has initiated a consultation process asking the American people about how it should go about creating a national network of protected areas in US waters.

You can help to make a global network of marine reserves a reality. Contact Mr. Jonathan Kelsey, National System Development Coordinator, National Marine Protected Areas Center, NOAA’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management.

Greenpeace: Hi. I’m a Mac, and iToxic.

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Via Greenpeace:

Hi. I’m a Mac, and iToxic.

Apple’s releasing more than new products these days, they’re also releasing tons of toxic chemicals. That’s because under their skin, apples are full of toxic chemicals. When they get tossed, they can end up at the fingertips of children in developing world countries, who dismantle them for parts. Take Action! Tell Steve Jobs that you want a green apple.

Greenpeace: Is YOUR Technology Toxic?

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Via Greenpeace:

Some of the hottest names in technology scored the lowest grades in a recent test of environmentally-unfriendly electronics. That’s because some of your favorite tech gadgets are made with toxic chemicals like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). And when last year’s coolest trend isn’t so cool anymore, tons of tossed out electronics make their way to the developing world, where children dismantle them for scraps, and are exposed to the toxics they contain. It’s time for these companies to cut the chemicals from their products, and create a strong recycling program.

Take Action >> Tell these toxic-tech companies to clean up their act.

More on this topic from Mother Jones blogger Diane Dees.

Greenpeace: Big Oil Strikes It Rich In Congress

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Via Greenpeace:

BP has shut down half of the largest oil field in North America, and oil prices are soaring. Big oil companies have American consumers over a barrel, and Congress hasn’t lifted a finger to help us, even though the solutions are within reach. In the face of global warming and rising prices, the time to switch to renewable energy is now. Let’s break America’s addiction to fossil fuels.

Take Action >> Tell Congress to come back from vacation and enact a bold new energy policy that dramatically increases the fuel economy of cars and invests in renewable energy sources like biofuels, wind, and solar.

America, your check engine light is on. The question is, what are you going to do about it?
