HSUS: Big victories mark the year’s halfway point

BIG VICTORIES MARK THE YEAR’S HALFWAY POINT

July 2, 2007
********************************

The fourth of July is an American holiday grounded on the principle that an independent and democratic nation is an ideal worth fighting for. At The HSUS, the ideal we fight for is that animals matter and that human beings have solemn responsibilities toward other creatures. We ask you to support us and to take action when we issue the call. And we want to show you that our collective action results in outcomes you can be proud of. At this mid-point in the year, I want to update you on some stunning accomplishments — and believe me, with your support, we intend to see many more in the months and years ahead.

PROTECTING PETS

The HSUS is always looking out for dogs, cats, and horses. In state legislatures and in the courts, we shuttered the last remaining horse slaughter plants in the country (two plants in Texas and one in Illinois), and we are pressing Congress to stop the export of horses to Canada and Mexico. The HSUS unveiled our undercover investigation of dog auctions, places where puppy mill owners buy and sell dogs like used cars. We followed this action with our first-ever filing of a class-action lawsuit against a dog dealer called Wizard of Claws for selling puppy mill puppies with genetic defects, serious illnesses and contagious parasites, and we are pressing ahead with a larger campaign against puppy mills. We worked closely with legislative leaders and friends in Hawaii to ensure the Aloha state would become the 43rd state to adopt a felony-level penalty for animal cruelty. Also, several states have passed measures to include pets in protective orders in domestic violence cases.

HSUS, IFAW, SAPL: Congress to Vote on Trophy Hunting of Polar Bears TOMORROW!

Monday, June 25th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/28/07, via the HSUS:

I am sorry to report that the Inslee-LoBiondo amendment failed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 188-242 late yesterday. This amendment sought to halt funding for one year for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to issue permits for the importation of sport-hunted polar bear trophies. Too many lawmakers caved in to the NRA and Safari Club International, and that provided the margin of defeat.

Click here to see how your Representative, voted: community.hsus.org/ct/V1S7Mss1RXhl/

If the vote was “AYE” please make a short polite phone call to (202) 225-2865 to say thanks. If the vote was “NO,” let your Representative know you are disappointed.

Thank you for your efforts to protect polar bears from trophy hunting. We have had some victories and some setbacks on this issue. Last week, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a funding cut for polar bear trophy imports. We will continue to press forward to include this funding cut in the final Interior Appropriations bill, and to pass the Polar Bear Protection Act, which will permanently ban polar bear trophy imports. Click here to urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor this important animal protection legislation: community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_polar_bear_trophy2/

————————–

Currently I have three emails in my inbox pertaining to tomorrow’s vote on the loophole that allows for the importation of polar bear trophies from Canada into the US. I’ll post all of them below, and update this post as needed with any new developments/alerts.

Animal Abuse

THIS IS BELLA.. SHE WAS BEATEN BY A VETERINARIAN AT SUN CITY WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona authorities arrested a veterinarian Monday on suspicion that he hit a five-pound Chihuahua in the head so hard that he dislodged the dog’s eye. Joshua Winston faces animal cruelty charges in the June 4 incident, according to Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Paul Chagolla. [Read more…]

KEEP DOG MURDER IN JAIL - GIVE HIM THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE

Our loving, young pet Mimi, a very small, chi was murdered by a man named Frank on Tuesday afternoon. Frank took our little dog and slit her throat then threw her over his back fence. Thanks to the excellent, diligent work of the Novato Police Department, Frank was arrested and is in jail with a over $100,000 bail. This man took the life of our family member, a dog that gave nothing but love to all that she met. She made our family laugh everyday with her antics. Her best friend was Ty the big black Great Dane, who is now moping around the house looking for his little friend. When I found my dog with her throat cut, ants crawling on her body, blood coming out of her ears, my belief that every human being has some level of basic kindness, died in that moment. Who is this man, whatever reason he has for committing this act, this is a sick person who does not belong in our society. He should be listed as a predator, just like sex offenders. Is any one safe anymore? GIVE THIS MAN THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE. [Read more…]

DawnWatch Alert: Pending legislation that endangers almost all animal-friendly legislation 6/11/07

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/12/07:

Another alert regarding the Farm Bill, this time from Last Chance for Animals. Now with new and improved talking points!

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Last Chance for Animals - campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: Jun 12, 2007 2:32 PM
Subject: Congress to Strip State and Local Animal Welfare Laws! Take Action Now!

Urgent Action Needed! - Don’t Let Congress Undo State and Local Animal Laws!

Congress is attempting to subvert the rights of citizens by prohibiting states and localities from voting against activities concerning public health, safety, and morals!

A provision in the pending Farm Bill would overturn some of the most important animal welfare legislation passed in decades and prevent us from protecting and fighting for the rights of animals across the country!

If passed, this provision would nullify state bans on horse slaughter, bans on gestation crates in Florida and bans on both gestation and veal crates in Arizona and bans on foie gras in California and Chicago.

This is an outrageous power grab that would undermine the democratic process and deny citizens the right to pass state and local laws on issues of humane treatment or food safety.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Reach your federal legislatures by calling the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121

After you make your calls, please follow up with an email to further encourage your legislators to keep this dangerous provision out of the Farm Bill.

Visit www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to contact your legislators.

Sample text below for phone calls and emails.

HSUS: Amazon.com Continues to Fight the Bad Fight

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/8/07:

See also: AMAZON.COM SUPPORTS COCKFIGHTING Please Protest!, from United Poultry Concerns (UPC)

——————-

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

Amazon.com Continues to Fight the Bad Fight

For at least two years, Amazon.com has been infamously—and incorrectly—touting its “right” to sell materials promoting illegal animal fighting, blatantly peddling dogfighting videos as well as cockfighting magazines like The Gamecock and The Feathered Warrior.

Amazon.com seems so determined to profit from illegal animal fighting that, rather than simply drop its sales of animal fighting materials, it has filed a motion against The HSUS in federal court, essentially asking that federal and state laws to protect animals be gutted to accommodate Amazon.com’s sales of animal fighting paraphernalia.

Amazon.com’s persistence is all the more disturbing because it comes just weeks after Congress passed legislation making it a felony offense to ship publications containing “commercial speech” for the purpose of promoting or “in any other manner furthering” animal fighting, in addition to the mailing of all other materials that promote animal fighting.

Fight Back!

Please tell Jeffrey Bezos, Amazon.com’s CEO, that it’s not too late to change course and do the right thing—and comply with the law.

HSUS: Two steps forward, one step back for horses

Action Alert
The Humane Society of the United States
June 5, 2007

****************************************

TWO STEPS FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK FOR HORSES

I have news to report to you on the issue of horse slaughter in the United States.

First, despite many threats that horse slaughter would be legalized by a stealth floor amendment in the final, intense days of the 2007 Texas state legislative session, we’re thrilled to report that the effort did not succeed. The flood of phone calls from you Texans really had an impact — we heard about them from every office. We were lobbying right up until the last moment and running ads in Texas newspapers, and the calls and letters made an enormous difference. (Note: View the ad at community.hsus.org/ct/i1S7Mss1hmhx/)

Second, Illinois passed a ban on horse slaughter for human consumption with the full support of the Governor and the Illinois Department of Agriculture! However, only a week after the victorious passage of this state bill, the owners of the horse slaughter plant in Illinois filed suit to overturn the law. An Illinois federal judge issued a temporary restraining order overriding the new state law, and that order will remain in force until a June 14 hearing. This means that horse slaughter can temporarily resume at the Illinois plant — which can butcher more than 500 horses a week. Our attorneys are fighting back in every way they can, but we need your help.

These state bans, and this temporary setback, once again highlight the urgent need for passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) — a federal bill to prohibit horse slaughter for human consumption and the transport of horses across the border for slaughter. We cannot sit back now while our horses are still being sent to Mexico and Canada for brutal slaughter in large numbers.

TAKE ACTION

HSUS: Help End Breeding of Chimpanzees for Research

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

UPDATE, 5/25/07, via the HSUS:

I am delighted to share some great news! Thanks in part to your action on behalf of chimpanzees in laboratories, the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) announced on May 22 that “after careful review of existing chimpanzee resources, NCRR has determined that it does not have the financial resources to support the breeding of chimpanzees that are owned or supported by NCRR.”

This announcement means that there will no longer be any funding by NCRR to support breeding of chimpanzees for research. NCRR also indicated that it will honor commitments regarding the care and funding of the existing chimpanzee population, including approximately 500 NCRR-owned chimpanzees currently in research labs and 90 who are in a federal sanctuary for those no longer “needed” in biomedical research. While this doesn’t help the chimpanzees currently living in laboratories, it is a monumental decision and will spare some chimpanzees a life of up to 60 years in a laboratory.

————————

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

Help End Breeding of Chimpanzees for Research

Chimpanzees experience a range of emotions, including depression, anxiety, pain, distress and empathy. Their emotions and complex cognitive abilities make confinement of these animals in cages and their use in research highly questionable on ethical grounds. They are poor models for human disease because of biological differences, including in their immunology. Finally, chimpanzees are extremely expensive to keep in laboratories. Captive chimps can live to the age of 60, so any bred today could spend up to six decades living in labs—at taxpayer expense.

The current moratorium on the breeding of federally-owned and supported chimpanzees extends through the end of 2007. On May 22, the National Advisory Research Resources Council of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) will meet to discuss, and potentially decide on, its renewal. Now is the time to let the Council and NCRR know that you do not want to see any taxpayer-funded breeding of chimpanzees for use in laboratories. The number of chimpanzees in labs could be reduced by halting the breeding of additional chimpanzees—a significant step in ultimately ending the cycle of chimpanzee research.

TAKE ACTION

Please take a moment to help by urging the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) to not only extend the moratorium beyond 2007, but to adopt this moratorium permanently to end the breeding of research chimps altogether.

HSUS: Take action for pet food safety

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Humane Society of the United States - humanesociety [at] hsus.org
Date: May 7, 2007 11:29 AM
Subject: Kelly, is your pet’s food safe?

The Humane Society of the United States
May 7, 2007
community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_pet_food/

TAKE ACTION FOR PET FOOD SAFETY!

Pets are part of our families, and millions of American families were shocked by the recent pet food recalls. The deaths of pets from tainted pet food tragically demonstrate the need for greater oversight of this industry. Fortunately, Congress is listening, and you can take action here: community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_pet_food/

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced the Pet and Human Food Safety Act on May 1 to provide more oversight and regulation of the food industry. In a remarkable demonstration of how important this issue is, the U.S. Senate approved a Durbin amendment on pet and human food safety on May 2 — just one day after the bill was introduced — by a resounding vote of 94 to 0!

You can help make the food supply safer.

TAKE ACTION

1. Make a short polite phone call to your U.S. Representative. Urge him or her to support and quickly enact the DeLauro/Durbin Pet and Human Food Safety Act.

Making a call is easy. A staff member will take your message and pass it to your legislator. When you call, you can say:

“Hello my name is [your name] and I’m calling from [your town and state] to urge [your representative’s name] to support the DeLauro/Durbin Pet and Human Food Safety Act (H.R. 2108/S. 1274). The ongoing pet food recall has revealed that there is very little regulation of the pet food industry. We need to change this to ensure that the food consumers are feeding their pets is wholesome and safe. Thank you.”

After you make your call, send a follow up email in support of safer pet food: community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_pet_food/

2. Tell your friends how they can help: https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_pet_food/forward/

The more people who contact Congress, the more support this legislation will receive and the better its chances of being quickly passed into law.
