URGENT: PROTEST BEN & JERRY’S SCOOP OF LIES

Is Ben & Jerry’s serving up “Chocolate Chip Cruelty Dough”? On its web site, the ice cream company known for its social conscience criticizes what it calls “giant, industrial farming operations,” and it ends one of its commercials with the tag line, “Ben & Jerry’s: Join our fight for small family farms.”

But this week, after nearly a year of promises to The Humane Society of the United States that it would phase out battery-cage eggs in its ice cream, the company has done an about-face and chosen to continue to buy eggs–perhaps 20 to 30 million of them a year–from factory farms that confine egg-laying hens in tiny battery cages so small the birds can’t even spread their wings.

You’ve taken action to help farm animals before (thank you!). Today, caged hens are counting on you again to show Ben & Jerry’s that it should live up to its socially responsible reputation and lose the battery cage eggs in its ice cream.

Tell Ben & Jerry’s right now to stop supporting this cruelty!

U.S. SENATE PASSES BILLS TO SAVE PETS, HUNTED WILDLIFE
August 4, 2006

********************************

Last night, the U.S. Senate passed two important animal protection measures: One will save pets during disasters, and the other will protect exotic species by closing the infamous “taxidermy tax scam” loophole.

These victories would not have been possible without your actions and support. By contacting your lawmakers or telling your friends and family about our legislative work, you have made a real and lasting impact on the lives of animals. Here are more details on last night’s major wins for animals:

VICTORY FOR AMERICA’S PETS (AND THEIR PEOPLE)

The U.S. Senate unanimously approved its version of the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act. The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version in May by an overwhelming vote. Congress has taken an important step in ensuring that Americans will never again be forced to leave their pets behind when disaster strikes, as happened during Hurricane Katrina.

The bill passed by the House calls for emergency preparedness plans to include consideration of people with pets and service animals before a disaster strikes. The Senate bill contains additional and strengthening provisions. The Humane Society of the United States supports both bills, but we hope the House will take up and approve the Senate version because it is more comprehensive. We are approaching the one-year mark of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and hurricane season is upon us again. Final passage of the PETS Act will be a priority when Congress returns from recess in September.

VICTORY FOR HUNTED EXOTICS (AND TAXPAYERS)

For years, big game trophy hunters have been sticking American taxpayers with the bill for their hunting vacations. A two-year investigation by The HSUS revealed that some trophy hunters are shooting rare animals around the world and donating their mounted prizes to phony museums so that they can take a tax deduction. A comprehensive pensions bill passed last week by the House and last night by the Senate contains provisions that tighten the laws on charitable giving and closes this trophy hunting tax scam loophole.

There is nothing charitable about shooting rare animals and writing off the cost. Closing this loophole will help save rare wildlife around the world and save American taxpayers an estimated $43 million over the next decade.

The fact is, these bills passed because of the actions of you and hundreds of thousands of other caring citizens. From all of us here at The HSUS and the Humane Society Legislative Fund, and on behalf of the animals we work to protect, thank you so much.

Sincerely,
Wayne Pacelle

HSUS: Together We Can Stop Canada’s Cruel Seal Hunt

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

From the Humane Society of the United States:

Use your buying power to tell the Canadian government to end the seal hunt.

The 2006 Canadian seal hunt left more than 336,000 seals dead — almost all of them were babies as young as 12 days old.

You can stand with us to stop the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Your greatest weapon is your wallet: Sign our pledge and tell the Canadian government that you won’t buy any Canadian seafood until the hunt is over for good. (You can find out how to spot Canadian seafood here.)

We’ll deliver your pledge to Canada’s government so the politicians will know you’ve joined our international ProtectSeals team to end this awful hunt.

Granted, I’d never buy Canadian sea”food” anyway, since I’m a vegan and all…but hey, they don’t know that (*wink, wink*).

HSUS & SAPL: Urge Your Representative to co-sponsor the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

A hearing for H.R. 503, a bill that would “prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the trade and transport of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption,” is scheduled for 7/25. Both the HSUS and SAPL have recently released alerts asking subscribers to contact their Representatives and urge co-sponsor the bill, also known as the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

First, the HSUS:

Great strides have been taken to prevent the annual slaughter of nearly 100,000 horses in the United States for human consumption abroad — but we are not there yet. We got a great vote last year, but it didn’t lead to a permanent ban on horse slaughter. It has paved the way, but we have to take the next step now. [...]

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25, 2006 on H.R. 503, that could trigger movement to push this legislation through the full House, and on to the U.S. Senate. This is our chance to protect our American horses from slaughter once and for all.

Please make a short polite phone call to your U.S. Representative today. You can reach your federal legislators by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or click here to find his or her Capitol office phone number. [...]

After you make your phone calls, fill in the form at the right to automatically send a follow-up email to your Representative and your two Senators about the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Then hop on over to the SAPL’s web site, where you can find a ton of additional information.

FIGHTING FACTORY FARMING

Farm animals are increasingly raised in confinement facilities on industrial-style farms. Their plight is often concealed from public view, but The HSUS is undertaking a multi-pronged public campaign to combat the worst abuses at factory farms.

Just this past week, The HSUS launched a legal action arguing that force-feeding birds for the notorious “delicacy” foie gras is so harmful to the animals’ health that it violates state food law. The action generated coverage in the New York Times and on MSNBC.com, exposing hundreds of thousands of readers to the cruelty endured by birds used in the foie gras industry.

community.hsus.org/ct/mdS7Mss18RWk/

At the federal level, The HSUS is pleased to announce the introduction of the Farm Animal Stewardship Purchasing Act, a bill that would compel producers supplying the federal government with animal products to meet moderate animal welfare standards.

community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2006_stewardship_act/

The bill–H.R. 5557–introduced by Reps. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.) and Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon), would improve the lives of millions of factory-farmed animals if enacted. “The way a society treats its animals speaks to the core values and priorities of its citizens,” said Rep. Shays, co-chair of the Congressional Friends of Animals Caucus. “Our government can have a tremendous impact in encouraging improved treatment of animals by requiring producers to meet basic federal animal welfare requirements. I look forward to working with Rep. DeFazio and HSUS on building support for this legislation.”

In addition to litigation and legislation to combat factory farming, The HSUS is also teaming up with Grammy-nominated musician Moby to get the word out. Moby’s new video lets consumers know about the horrors of factory farming and what each of us can do to help reduce farm animal suffering.

Free DVDs of Moby’s new video are available to the first 500 people to request one through the new Factory Farming Campaign website.

DEMOCRACY IN THE WORKS

July 4th always reminds me of one of our keystone American freedoms–voting. Even though it’s mid-summer, I’m already thinking of November, when voters in Arizona, Massachusetts, and Michigan–backed strongly by The HSUS and HSLF–have a chance to significantly improve animals’ lives. And Florida residents are gearing up to fight a measure that would restrict citizen lawmaking for animals and other causes.

Twenty-four states allow citizens to place legislative measures on the statewide ballot. This form of direct democracy has yielded great results for animals. Since 1990, about 25 statewide measures have appeared on issues ranging from cockfighting to trophy hunting to horse slaughter, and the animal protection movement has won three-quarters of them. Ballot measures are state-specific, but they act as mini-referenda for issues we care about as a nationwide movement.

Arizonans will consider a groundbreaking measure to prohibit the confinement of breeding pigs and veal calves in small crates and require that the animals have enough room to turn around, lie down, and extend their limbs: community.hsus.org/ct/hdS7Mss18RWD/

Massachusetts voters have a chance to enact stronger laws
against dogfighting, protect working dogs from cruelty, and
phase out greyhound racing.

community.hsus.org/ct/y7S7Mss18RWF/

Michigan volunteers braved freezing winter weather to collect more than 275,000 signatures to allow voters the chance to restore a 100-year ban on shooting mourning doves: community.hsus.org/ct/h1S7Mss18RWJ/

Floridians are facing a hostile initiative to take away their voting rights. The measure would require that any citizen initiative would have to garner 60 percent to be approved by voters, and it would make future initiatives all but impossible. It’s a power grab by politicians in Tallahassee, and it needs to be defeated: community.hsus.org/ct/ypS7Mss18RW-/

So while a handful of states will be voting on ballot measures in November, the animal protection movement nationwide needs to swing behind those campaigns. Because if we win, it’s a victory for the animals in those states and everywhere.

If you live in Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, or Michigan, make sure you’re registered to vote (PDF) in the 2006 elections, and encourage your community to side with the animals and with
direct democracy at the ballot box this year: community.hsus.org/ct/m1S7Mss18RWi/

Sincerely,

Mike Markarian, President
Humane Society Legislative Fund

FACTORY FARMING: A CAMPAIGN UPDATE ON OUR VICTORIES
AND CURRENT BATTLES

********************************

Dear Kelly,

Because you’re concerned about farm animals, I’d like to invite you to take action on a new bill that could help millions of animals. Then, read on for some exciting news about our work to combat some of the cruelest factory farming abuses.

:: EASY ACTION FOR FARM ANIMALS: Congressmen Christopher Shays (R-Conn.) and Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) have introduced a bill that would require producers supplying animal products to the federal government to comply with minimal animal welfare standards. Please ask your representative to co-sponsor and support H.B. 5557, the Farm Animal Stewardship Purchasing Act. It will only take a minute or two, but could make a real difference in the lives of millions of animals. Click here: community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2006_stewardship_act/

:: COMPANIES GO CAGE-FREE: From the campuses of Google and AOL to those of Ohio State University and Dartmouth, our No Battery Eggs campaign has saved hundreds of thousands of hens from lives of misery in battery cages. Read more about the companies and schools our Factory Farming Campaign is working with to free hens from cages. Click here: community.hsus.org/ct/UpS7Mss1hzI1/

:: MOBY MAKES MUSIC FOR ANIMALS: Internationally renowned and Grammy-nominated musician Moby has long advocated for the improved treatment of animals raised for meat, eggs, and milk. The HSUS is proud to introduce to you his powerful video on farm animals, their conditions on industrialized factory farms, and what each one of us can do to help reduce their suffering. :: CHICAGO MAKES HISTORY: After months of campaigning by The HSUS and other organizations, the Chicago City Council voted to ban the sale of foie gras in the city. Foie gras is cruelly produced by force-feeding ducks and geese unnatural amounts of food through a pipe thrust down their throats, which can cause severe injuries, organ rupture, and even death. We applaud the Aldermen of Chicago for seeing that this abusive product will no longer be tolerated in the Windy City. Click here to learn more: community.hsus.org/ct/ydS7Mss1hzIa/
