SAPL eAlert: Congress to consider two (horse-related) bills

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

UPDATE, 4/30/07, via the HSUS:

This afternoon (4/27/07), at 12:38 p.m., the U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly (277-137) to restore a 34-year-old ban on the commercial sale and slaughter of America’s wild horses and burros. Yesterday, the bill to ban the sale and transport to slaughter of all American horses cleared a critical Senate committee by a decisive 15-7 vote. These victories move us even closer to banning horse slaughter in the United States permanently.

Your calls and emails are key to winning this fight. Everyday this past week, as I walked the halls of the House and Senate with other Humane Society of the United States staff, shoring up support for these two votes, every office we visited said the same thing: “We are getting a lot of phone calls from our constituents about the horses.” Please help keep the momentum going:

+ Click here to urge support for restoring protections to wild horses and burros.

+ Click here to urge support for banning the slaughter of all horses.

UPDATE, 4/23/07:

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has a sample letter for H.R. 249 (item #2 in the SAPL email below), here (“Up This Week: House Vote on Saving Wild Horses and Burros”).

HSUS: Support Senate Resolution to End Seal Hunt

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

Support Senate Resolution to End Seal Hunt

The Canadian seal hunt is the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals in the world.

Already, the disappearing ice caused by global warming has devastated seal populations in Canada’s North Atlantic waters. It’s estimated that more than a quarter of the seal pups have died, and the survivors are being targeted by the hunt. That’s because, despite these catastrophic ice conditions, the Canadian government is allowing fishermen to kill 270,000 seals in the 2007 hunt.

Last year, pups between just 12 days and 12 weeks of age made up more than 95 percent of the seals killed—either by clubbing or shooting. An independent team of veterinarians observed a previous seal hunt and concluded that the hunt failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare regulations.

A Senate resolution (S. Res. 118), sponsored by Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Joseph Biden (D-DE), is calling on the Canadian government to end the brutal and senseless seal hunt. Please ask your senators to co-sponsor S. Res. 118. If they are already co-sponsors, please express your thanks.

HSUS: Tell Your Legislators to Support the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act

Monday, March 26th, 2007

UPDATE, 3/27/07, via the Humane Society of the United States:

Good news! Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 137) by a landslide vote — 368 to 39. It’s thanks to your calls and emails to your Representative that we were able to secure such a decisive victory. Click here to find out how your Representative voted.

Now, we’re focusing on the U.S. Senate — in order to complete the effort to make it a federal felony to move fighting animals or cockfighting implements across state lines or foreign borders. Please help us keep up the momentum and make a short polite phone call to both of your Senators.

First, see if your two Senators are cosponsors of S. 261 (the companion to H.R. 137).

If they are, call and thank them for their support and ask them for help to get this legislation passed quickly in the Senate.

If they are not, call and say:

“Hello my name is [your name] and I support the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 137/S. 261). The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly and passed this legislation, and I hope the Senate will do the same. Similar legislation has been approved by the Senate three times. It is time for the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act to become law. Please vote yes on this important bill and do all that you can to see it enacted into law now. Thank you.”

Nearly every week there are reports of problems associated with illegal dog fighting and cockfighting. This past weekend in Ohio, law enforcement agencies raided a dog fight and several kennels, seizing 64 dogs and arresting two dozen suspects. Also this past weekend, 200 roosters were seized from a cockfight in California, and a man was fatally shot at a cockfight in Hawaii.

Thank you for your continued efforts to end animal fighting. With your help, I know we can win.

HSUS: Urge Canada’s Minister of International Trade to Stop the Seal Hunt

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

Urge Canada’s Minister of International Trade to Stop the Seal Hunt

Tell Canada’s Minister of International Trade, David Emerson, that the seal hunt damages Canada’s international reputation, and remind him that it has resulted in ongoing global boycotts of Canadian seafood and tourism. Let him know that you’ve joined with more than 340,000 people, as well as many chefs, restaurants, and grocery chains, in pledging not to buy Canadian seafood products until Canada ends its brutal slaughter of seals. Tell him it’s time to end the commercial seal hunt for good — a hunt opposed by most Canadian citizens shouldn’t be allowed to harm Canada’s economy.

HSUS: Big news on animal fighting, fur, and horse slaughter

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

The Humane Society of the United States
CAMPAIGN UPDATE: HUGE LEAPS FORWARD
March 13, 2007
********************************

I have big news to share with you today on three of The Humane Society of the United States’ priority campaigns:

COCKFIGHTING VICTORY: FORTY-NINE DOWN, ONE TO GO

Yesterday, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson signed a measure that outlaws cockfighting in that state, a major victory in our campaign to rid the nation of this barbaric and cruel practice. The HSUS worked closely with Animal Protection of New Mexico to achieve this historic outcome. The ban leaves Louisiana as the only state where the centuries-old bloodsport remains legal, and
The HSUS will mount a major effort to outlaw the practice there when the state’s legislative session begins on April 30.

Thank you for speaking out for tougher penalties for illegal animal fighting and supporting the Animal Fighting Prohibition
Enforcement Act. Please let your friends and family know how they can help move this bill to the finish line.

HSUS TO CONSUMERS: BEWARE OF DOG

Today, The HSUS escalated our campaign to protect animals and consumers from widespread abuses by the apparel industry. We
filed a legal petition with the Federal Trade Commission this morning seeking to enforce the Fur Products Labeling Act against
14 major retailers and designers concerning false advertising and false labeling of garments with fur trim. Click here to read more.

Also this morning, the “Today” show reported on our investigation that turned up products made with fur from dogs and other species that were sold as either fake fur or other types of animal fur in violation of the Federal Fur Products Labeling Act. In response to our investigation, many retailers and designers acted to put customers and animals first — notably Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, which have both pledged to go fur free within a year. But a disappointing number of stores and designers did not take appropriate action and are listed in our petition.

Click here to watch this morning’s “Today” show segment, then tune in tomorrow for a scheduled follow-up story.

HSUS: Support the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

Support the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act

Good news! On Thursday morning, March 8, a federal bill (S. 261) to help law enforcement crack down on animal fighting will be voted on in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Please take action and help this important bill clear the Senate Committee with flying colors.

This bill will upgrade the weak misdemeanor penalty in current federal law — making it a felony to transport an animal across state or international borders for animal fighting (such as dog fighting, cockfighting and hog-dog fighting).

HSUS: We Need The Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

We Need The Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007

Protect consumers and animals by stopping the sale of fur from raccoon dogs—a member of the dog family sometimes skinned alive in China—and requiring all fur garments to be labeled. Recent HSUS tests showed that animal fur is frequently mislabeled or marked as faux fur.

Please ask your U.S. Representative to support and co-sponsor the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007. You can reach your Representative by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or click here to find your Representative’s office phone number.

After you make your phone call, please fill in and submit the form at the right to automatically send a follow-up email to your Representative urging support for the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007 (H.R. 891). Be sure to make your message even more effective by putting it into your own words!

THE POWER OF FILM: Watch, Vote For, and Create Movie Magic for Animals
February 16, 2007
***************************************

Sometimes all it takes is a good story. And when that story is told through the language of film, its power can inspire viewers to change how they think and act. Today I want to share with you three ways you can celebrate the power of film to change animals’ lives.

See Compassion in Action in Amazing Grace

Next weekend, you won’t want to miss the true story of William Wilberforce (1759-1833), a political activist who was not only a leading abolitionist but one of the founding figures of the animal protection movement. The film captures Wilberforce’s determination to end the cruelty and suffering imposed on both humans and animals in his era, and it’s an inspiring story of how one person can make a difference. I loved Amazing Grace and hope you’ll see it on opening weekend, beginning February 23.

Vote for Your Favorite Animal-Friendly Film

Academy Award-nominated Happy Feet (shown at left) is one of three animated family feature films nominated for our 21st annual Genesis Awards, which acknowledge positive portrayals of animal issues in film, television, and print. Which movie will win? Vote for your favorite film in this and each of three other
categories, and we’ll enter you in a drawing to win a free weekend trip to New York, courtesy of Southwest Airlines and W Hotels.

Vote now and enter to win. Click here: community.hsus.org/ct/-pS7Mss1RzmI/

Make Your Own Film for Animals

If you’re 16-25 and an aspiring filmmaker — or just someone who wants to do more than upload funny home videos to YouTube — then check out the Film Your Issue (FYI) competition. FYI invites young people to create short films that address issues that are important to them. The Humane Society of the United States is a featured partner, and we’ve even provided “B roll” you can use to create your own movie about our top campaigns.

Make your own movie. Click here: community.hsus.org/ct/-7S7Mss1RzmW/

Thanks for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle

HSUS: It’s Your Call - Should Amazon Promote Animal Fighting?

********************************

TELL AMAZON.COM TO STOP PROFITING FROM ANIMAL FIGHTING

Did you know that Amazon.com is peddling materials that are both illegal and cruel to animals? It’s true: Amazon.com is selling materials that promote cockfighting and dogfighting, and The Humane Society of the United States has been pressuring the company to remove these materials for many months.

Yesterday, the online retail giant told us that two dogfighting DVDs would be pulled from the site. This is a win for the dogs abused and killed in dogfights, but in the past Amazon.com has removed similar videos only to offer them for sale again later.

AMAZON.COM MUST MAKE A CLEAR COMMITMENT TO KEEPING ALL PROMOTIONS OF ILLEGAL ANIMAL FIGHTING OFF THEIR VIRTUAL SHELVES.

Now, Amazon.com must also cease its unsavory profiteering from The Gamecock and The Feathered Warrior, magazines that sell illegal animal-fighting paraphernalia and call attention to cockfighting venues. These magazines are the glue that holds together the criminal cockfighting industry in this country, and Amazon.com is their main internet subscription tool.

Today, please join us in telling Amazon.com that it’s time for a zero-tolerance policy against the violent spectacle of animal fighting for human amusement. CALL AMAZON.COM RIGHT NOW AT 206-266-1000 and demand that they stop collecting blood money from this exploitation of animals.

This is not an issue of freedom of speech or materials that are merely offensive, although they are that. The facts are clear:

Interstate distribution of materials that promote animal fighting is a violation of federal law. This week, The HSUS filed suit against Amazon.com and its suppliers to uphold that law.

TELL AMAZON THAT HONORABLE RETAILERS MUST REFRAIN FROM PROFITEERING FROM CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES.

You can also use Amazon.com’s web form to make your point: community.hsus.org/ct/KdS7Mss10zm-/. Then, please
forward this alert to your friends and family so that they can make the call against animal fighting, too: community.hsus.org/campaign/US_2007_amazon_fighting/

HSUS: Spay Day USA 2007

The Humane Society of the United States: DO IT FOR LOVE

Spay Day USA 2007 (Mini Poster).jpg

February 27 is Spay Day USA, and The Humane Society of the United States is partnering with local groups to get tens of thousands of pets spayed and neutered.

Thousands of puppies and kittens are born every hour in the United States, and many will never find homes. Fortunately, spaying and neutering is a solution that we can all be a part of. It’s simple, effective, and saves pets’ lives for generations to come.

This year, The HSUS is thrilled to offer you fun and easy ways to get involved with Spay Day USA events throughout the country. Last year, 29,000 cats, dogs, and other animals were reported spayed or neutered at these events. I know that together we can make an even bigger impact this year.

Here’s how you can be a part of the solution:

1. Set a goal to help pets in the community of your choice or nationwide. Did you know that $75 will spay/neuter one cat or dog?* That might seem like a lot, but when you enlist your family and friends to help raise money for this worthy cause, you can set a goal to help spay or neuter five, ten, twenty, or more pets! It’s easy to get started, and you can do it all online. Click here: community.hsus.org/ct/W7S7Mss1lzj_/

2. Volunteer. Check out the local events planned this month and volunteer to help. If you can’t find an event in your community, then organize one! Click here: community.hsus.org/ct/O7S7Mss1lzja/

3. Spay or neuter your pet. If you haven’t done this already, please schedule an appointment now. Click here: community.hsus.org/ct/O7S7Mss1lzja/

And make sure your friends, family, and neighbors know why it’s important to spay or neuter their pets, too. Our downloadable brochure can help. Click here: community.hsus.org/ct/OpS7Mss1lzjz/
