Between the brush fires and flooding in Australia and the flash floods and landslides in Brazil, the world has seen at least several large-scale “natural” disasters in recent months – though consumers of mainstream media may be none the wiser. As with the 2010 floods in Pakistan, these emergencies have received little coverage (at least in the United States), including from animal advocacy corners.

Perhaps it’s due to “compassion fatigue” in the wake of the earthquakes in Haiti, which sparked an outpouring of support. (If not structural, but still.) I’d like to believe that, as far as fellow animal advocates are concerned, the silence is attributable to a simple lack of news to report. At least, this has been the case ’round these parts; aside from the stray plea for donations, I haven’t seen much in response to more recent disaster situations.

When I received Kinship Circle’s latest newsletter, reporting that it – in partnership with IDA – was on the ground in Brazil, providing disaster relief to the nonhuman victims of the floods and mudslides, I figured it was high time to write about the relief efforts currently underway in Brazil. Though I spent much of the morning combing through the websites of well-known animal welfare groups – including many of those that responded to previous disasters – I was only able to find a few that are currently providing aid in Brazil.

The most pressing need, of course, is for monetary donations. Please give what you can. Long-term, volunteers – bodies on the ground – are essential to providing emergency assistance as well. To this end, please also consider getting involved with an animal advocacy group that specializes in disaster response. If you live in the U.S., Kinship Circle is a good start; check out its Disaster Responder Volunteer Form for more info.

Food for Life Global (FFLG), which distributes free vegan/vegetarian meals to those in need worldwide (among other things), does not currently list the 2011 Brazil floods as one of its emergency relief programs. However, it does support a food distribution project in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil Disaster Relief – March 10, 2011 Update

Six weeks have passed since the cataclysmic flooding and mudslides in Brazil. In the warehouse-like emergency shelter in Teresopolis, in Rio de Janeiro, what is particularly striking is that the vast majority of animals – among hundreds – were companion animals, not strays as was the case after Chile’s earthquake a year ago. Formerly loved and cared for, those in the shelter are now haunted by loss, living alone in a world they used to share with human families. Thanks to your donations, IDA has been able to contribute to the team of responders trying their best to care for these animals.

IDA has partnered with another animal protection organization, Kinship Circle, in response to this disaster. Amid continuing rains and mudslides, with an ever-growing fear that more flooding is imminent, IDA-Kinship Circle volunteers ease some of the heartbreak, terror, and confusion. Left outside the shelter was a rottweiler-pit bull mix, with her shiny coat and sparkling white teeth, whose spirit has deteriorated quickly. An elderly man, filled with despair, left a black chow mix at the shelter front gate and walked away, while the bewildered dog, straining on his leash, was desperate to join him.

There are the “drive-by drop-offs” left roped outside or in milk crates. There are the guardians who have lost everything and carry their beloved animals into the shelter because they can no longer care for them. IDA-Kinship rescuers are still bringing to the shelter dogs and cats from homes that were ripped apart. A pregnant black lab went into labor and was rushed to a separate warehouse reserved for medical procedures. On the same day, a dog died in the same building where the puppies were born.

Sadness permeates the Teresopolis shelter, but the ravages of such a catastrophe have stirred great heroism and extraordinary compassion. Adoptions abound. A Franciscan nun and monk order will take 15 dogs as soon as the roads reopen from flash flooding. Two Brazilian veterinarians from Sao Paulo University and responders from Canada have recently joined the volunteer team, as have Chilean veterinarians whom we assisted in Chile’s earthquake last year.

Animal Disaster Aid

This dog has bicheira, flesh eating maggots in Portuguese. The left side of his face is gone. Rescuers thought he’d die. But he responded to treatment. Maggots are epidemic among injured animals of Brazil’s floods and avalanches. This dog gets a happy ending — a home in Rio!

The tiniest of hearts beats in the wreckage. Over one month post-disaster, EstimAcao still gets calls to rescue animals stranded by the slides and floods.

At an evacuated home, we found ducks, bunnies, dogs, chickens, and an trapped songbird. No food or water. Caged, starving, scared. One duck seemed too dehydrated to live. But a bath revived her.

An IDA-Kinship Circle team now in Brazil is providing search and rescue services, veterinary treatment, including spaying and neutering, and more.

Entire towns are devoured by floods and mudslides, the worst natural disaster in the country’s history. Thousands of rescued animals have found refuge in makeshift shelters. There is dire need for food, water, shelter, and veterinary-trained responders. Animals with broken bones, burns, and deep gashes are everywhere. There is growing concern about disease.

Nicky, a German Shepherd mix, limped into the Teresopolis shelter in Rio de Janeiro with one leg dangling, a missing toe, and an absent foot pad, wearing a collar caked in mud. Her family was swallowed up in a landslide. IDA-Kinship Circle responders Jan and Carlos Cabral of Posse Petropolis, Brazil adopted the ten-year-old, who now shadows Jan everywhere so as not to be left behind.

In an old warehouse in Teresopolis, a mountain town outside Rio de Janeiro, newly rescued animals arrive daily. There is overcrowding and shortages of medication and fluids. Temperatures rise into the nineties. The risk of Dogs tail lost to maggotsdehydration is ever-present. A dog arrives at the shelter, his tail so thick with maggots that it falls off during treatment. There are burn victims and others infested with maggots.

Not-yet-rescued cats still hide in the ruins. Puppies remain stuck in the wreckage. Horses are still waiting to be saved.

In what is perhaps the most widely circulated image of the 2011 flooding and landslides in Brazil, a brown, medium-sized, mixed-breed dog lays beside a freshly dug grave, which is marked only with a plain pine cross. Initially believed to “belong” to Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who died in Teresopolis, it was reported that the grief-struck Leao refused to leave his mistress’s grave. WSPA Brazil has since confirmed that “Leao” (not his real name) is cemetery worker Rodolfo Junior’s dog, and often accompanies him to work. Reporters may have confused “Leao” with another dog, Caramelo, whose family was killed in the flooding and was spotted near the cemetery. (Happily, Caramelo has since been adopted.)

Still, “Leao” remains a powerful reminder that nonhumans experience the same emotions as do humans; they love one another just as deeply as dowe, and the grief and suffering the experience in the wake of disasters natural and man-made is no less than our own.

Thousands of starving animals affected by severe flooding in Pakistan need your help!

Hundreds of thousands of animals have already drowned due to tragic flooding in Pakistan that claimed 1,400 human lives and affected more than 15 million people. The surviving animals are at severe risk and in desperate need of food and veterinary care.

Please help feed Pakistan’s starving animals.

People in Pakistan are struggling to keep their animals alive. Floodwaters are still not receding and more rain is falling on the destroyed crops, which is leaving a massive shortage of animal food.

WSPA is partnering with the Vets Care Club, a group of veterinary students and staff from the University of Veterinary and Animal Science in Lahore, to provide feed to cows, buffalos, goats and sheep in the Layyah District, Punjab. This region has 252 farmers with 4,458 animals.

Your gift now will be used to buy nutritionally-balanced feed for animals who will most likely otherwise starve as their owners cannot afford to buy them food.

A small gift can go a long way to stopping the suffering of animals.

$30 can feed a buffalo or cow for a week
$10 can feed two goats or sheep for a week

The flooding is now covering one-fifth of the country, including its agricultural heartland. Several villages have been severely affected, many completely demolished.

WSPA’s 30-year history treating animals in disasters has shown that animals are crucial to the recovery of the region. Agriculture, including livestock, is the livelihood mainstay of nearly 90% of the flood-affected community in Pakistan’s rural areas.

In a recent plea for donations, Kinship Circle wondered whether the earthquake (and resulting tsunami) in Chile has become “the forgotten disaster” – in a year filled with both natural and man-made catastrophes:

IS CHILE THE FORGOTTEN DISASTER? May, 2010: An evacuee camp in Talquahano wants to kill all its companion animals. People who lost everything in an 8.8 earthquake and tsunami can’t feed themselves. They don’t want to watch their animals starve.

Kinship Circle and SACH intervene with food and veterinary aid. But without more funding, we can’t possibly meet the needs of 30 tent camps along Chile’s coast. We run out of sutures, latex gloves… At times we can’t afford the van rental to ferry our team, vet supplies and food.

Still, we can’t let despair propel Chileans to shoot their own animals. This speaks volumes about Chile’s quake/tsunami victims…and how the world seems to have forgotten them. People assume they can recover on their own. They’re wrong, especially when it comes to animals.

WHY IS THIS URGENT AND WHOM WILL IT HELP? Homeless guardians are unable to supply food or medicine to their animals. In the short term, animals require treatment for gashes, broken bones, lost limbs, dehydration, mange, worms, parasites or other illness. In the longer term, they need vaccines, nutrition and sterilization. Pre-quake strays with mange, malnutrition, infection…blend with animals stranded by disaster. The are scattered by the thousands along quake/tsunami torn towns like Villa Futura, Santa Clara Talchuano, Calita il Fiernillo, and Calita Los Morros, etc.

Preceded by the Haitian earthquake and followed by the BP oil “spill,” the Chilean earthquake hasn’t garnered as much attention as it might have otherwise. Indeed, though I compiled link roundups for all three disasters, the Chilean post has attracted the least traffic of the three, with views falling quickly mere weeks after the earthquake. Currently, the Haitian post receives x5 as many views as its Chilean counterpart, even though it’s two months older. Likewise (and outside of my own little slice of the interwebs), I cannot remember the last time I saw coverage of the earthquake in Chile on CNN, MSNBC, or the like. (Possibly not more than a week or two after the disaster struck?)

All of which isn’t to suggest that the survivors in Haiti and the Gulf Coast are not deserving of your support; not at all! Since most of us have limited funds and time, picking and choosing a cause or two to donate to can be a difficult, heartbreaking task. But if you have a little extra cash to spare, please consider sending it to help the survivors in Chile who have been hit doubly hard – first by the earthquake and tsunami, and later by donor fatigue.

Your donation will help to fund the rescue and care of stray and “owned” animals of many species, including dogs, cats, pigs and horses. Kinship Circle is the primary U.S.-based animal advocacy organization on the ground in Chile. They are working in conjunction with Socorro Animal Chile (SACH), a coalition of local, Chilean animal rescue groups and organizations. You can make a monetary donation to either group via its respective website. Additionally, you can keep abreast of Kinship Circle’s activities in Chile on a dedicated page, which is home to field notes, photos and action alerts.

While the recent earthquake (and resulting tsunami) in Chile has received less coverage – at least in regards to subsequent relief efforts – than that in Haiti, I was able to find some information on animal-friendly organizations that are providing help with disaster relief. Please feel free to share any additional information in the comments!

1. Vegan Bake Sales for Chile: As of this writing, I can’t find a post dedicated specifically to vegan bake sales to benefit Chilean quake survivors on the PPK blog, however, a search of the forums does bring up a few relevant threads. Head on over to the PPK to organize and announce your own bake sale for Chile!

2. Food for Life Global is on the ground in Chile, providing vegan and/or vegetarian meals to quake survivors:

BBC, Feb 28 — The death toll from Chile’s earthquake has more than doubled to 708 and is expected to rise further, President Michelle Bachelet has said. Previously about 300 people were estimated to have been killed in Saturday’s 8.8 magnitude quake – one of the most powerful recorded. Massive damage is hampering rescue teams as they struggle to reach those still buried in the rubble.

3. In Defense of Animals (IDA) reported on 3/18/10 that it will be sending aid to Chile:

On February 27, Chile experienced a magnitude 8.8 earthquake, followed by two tsunamis and several weeks of aftershocks.

IDA has already committed $5,000 to Socorro Animal Chile, SACH (Animal Relief Chile), a coalition of Chilean animal protection organizations. SACH sends three veterinarian-led teams into the field daily. We would like to send SACH even more assistance, as the need is enormous. Please help IDA continue to respond to natural disasters by contributing to our Disaster Relief Fund.

Funds IDA raises to help animals in Chile will be used to provide:

* Emergency sheltering for rescued animals
* Search and rescue efforts
* In-field sustenance (food/water program)
* Animal transport
* Temporary clinics to treat animals
* Support for spay/neuter and adoption programs

Kinship Circle’s Sister Michael Marie and Bonnie Morrison returned to Chile on June 25…and bussed cross country to the coastal village of Tirua. Kinship Circle reunited with Socorro Animal Chile (SACH) veterinarians, who were conducting a spay/neuter and first aid clinic for quake and tsunami stricken animals. Bonnie and Sister presented a large monetary gift, along with six boxes of medical supplies. Sister, who is trained as a vet tech, then assisted with surgery, while Bonnie served as a recovery room nurse.

SISTER WRITES: We worked with SACH all day in Quidico. Two people were stationed at each of four surgical tables, to attend to animals. We were happy to reunite with our colleagues: Chilean vets Rodrigo Flores, Camilo Salazar, Glenda Cabrera, Enrique, Luis Seguel aka Shiry. SACH leaders Cesar Sanchez (Assistant Coordinator) and Alejandra Cassino (National Coordinator) were also present to receive Kinship Circle’s gift and helping hands.

We hope to raise funds for quake/tsunami animal victims all summer long. Kinship Circle has no major funding source. Your support is a lifeline!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Earthquakes. Oil Spills. Floods. Too much to process. Our senses get dulled.

But I am so upset about a phone call I received that I am writing to you personally. Traci Dawson, our Team 3 leader in Chile, reports that an evacuee camp in Talquahano wants to kill all its companion animals. People who lost everything in Chile’s 8.8 earthquake and tsunami can’t even feed themselves. They don’t want to watch their animals starve to death.

Kinship Circle and SACH (Animal Relief Chile) responded immediately with food and veterinary first aid. We met with the tent camp’s “Mayor.” The animals here are hungry, many injured, some sick.

We rescue litters burrowed inside wreckage, almost daily.

This kitten has a broken femur bone that went untreated since the earthquake.

There are 30 tent camps along Chile’s ravaged coast. People and animals occupy row after row of tents. We fear a similar mentality will invade all the camps. Though we travel north and south of Concepcion, we routinely run out of sutures, latex gloves… One of our veterinarians in Chile now, Dr. Dan Meakin, even performed surgery on a dog in an open field. At times we can’t afford the van rental to ferry our team, vet supplies and food.

This rescued kitten and puppy are so happy to eat, they have no problem sharing the bowl!

We promise the camp in Talquahano we will return. We won’t let despair propel them to shoot their own animals. But the situation distresses me deeply. It speaks volumes about Chile’s quake/tsunami victims…and how the world seems to have forgotten them. People assume they can recover on their own. They’re wrong, especially when it comes to animals.

Kinship Circle works alongside Chilean veterinarians to save them — but can’t get animals off the streets without your help. Worse, Chile’s government has discussed a cull of 700,000 animals in hard hit communities.

As we travel the coast, Kinship Circle IC Traci Dawson likens it to Chile’s “Upper Ninth Ward,” in reference to a Katrina ravaged community in New Orleans. Pre-quake strays with mange, malnutrition, infection…blend with animals displaced by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and tsunamis.

Still, that puppy in the middle of the road? She is safe and will be adopted. The animals near the oil spill? They are fed and clean.

4/2/10: Villa Futura, north of Concepcion, Chile

OVERVIEW: Kinship Circle team members Traci Dawson, June Towler, Shawndra Michell, Maureen Valentine and Byron Wilkes work in a temp vet clinic, with three Chilean veterinarians, student vets, and six volunteers from a SACH (Socorro Animal Chile / Animal Relief Chile) member group, Animal Dignity. Outside the clinic, a line of people and animals stretch down the sidewalk…

ACTIVITIES: The turnout is staggering. There are virtually no neutered dogs… Vets examine animals, checking eyes, teeth, ears, glands, neck region, flea infestation, spines, organs, heart, etc. Skin disorders are prevalent, as are wounds and bites.

ISSUES: The clinic runs out of pest spray, latex gloves and paper towels. Though Kinship donates latex gloves, there still aren’t enough.

STATS: Today the clinic sees over 200 animals.

4/1/10: Santa Clara Talchuano / 9:00 am

OVERVIEW: An earthquake and tsunami crashed into this “fishing town” near ground zero. Torn nets and debris cover beaches and streets. Numerous dogs rove amid rubble. Homes are rimmed with waterlines about 5 feet high. Buildings have Katrina-like mold, mud, water damage and collapsed walls.

ACTIVITIES: We spot a nursing dog. Fishermen lead us to the vicinity of her den. We search for her pups to evaluate their condition, but mom has tunneled so deep underground that we are unable to safely reach them.

Some evacuated locals left animals behind. An extremely large stray population wander streets and deserted buildings. All seem friendly, if skittish. We don’t encounter any aggressives.

ISSUES: Mange, wounds, starvation, lack of water. Food is distributed in measured amounts because many sell food rather than feed animals.

SIGHTING STATS: Roughly 100-150 dogs and unnumbered cats.

4/1/10: Calita Los Morros / 2:30 pm

OVERVIEW: Military tents and small shacks of wood and pallets serve as evacuee camps here. Many are with animals, but not all. Some conflict erupts between neighbors with and without animals…

ACTIVITIES: The team provides food and medical care to animals in the camp. Two cats with severe upper respiratory disease are treated on site.

During street rounds, we visit a family with multiple dogs — including a mom with a large litter and several cats. All animals are checked, treated and left with food. KC revisits a resident who told SACH she’d leave with her dogs. As suspected, she did not take them. The abandoned dogs are fed and we’ll attempt to find a home for them…

ISSUES: Mange, injuries, wounds, starvation, TVT, distemper. TVT, a canine venereal virus prevalent here, is transmitted via contact (sexual, touch/rub open wounds, nasal). Dogs get large red “cauliflower” tumors…

SIGHTING STATS: Approximately 200 dogs/cats.

4/1/10: Calita il Fiernillo, Quake causes oil spills / 5:00 pm

OVERVIEW: The earthquake caused an oil spill at a refinery along this town’s shore. Dogs and cats wade through black-water puddles. One cat is found atop a roof drenched in oil… Animals are decontaminated, but with no temp shelter, we can only release them.

In a an area swarming with strays, we capture and treat a very skittish dog whose staked out his “spot” on a slab of cardboard. Down the road, we find an 8-week-old puppy dazed and ragged in the middle of an intersection. SACH takes the puppy to a clinic, where she’ll remain till healthy enough to adopt out. Kinship Circle team members contribute money toward the pup’s clinic fees, as SACH reveals they are now completely out of money.

SIGHTING STATS: Over the course of the day, we see an estimated 500 dogs. The stray population has ballooned with animals displaced by this disaster.

WHY CHILE?

Animals have no borders, so when Chileans asked Kinship Circle to send teams to help displaced animals, we got to work. We are now in Chile for rescue, first aid and the eventual construction of a temp tent clinic/shelter to house homeless animals, treat injuries, vaccinate, and spay/neuter.

WHY CHILE?

A stretch of coastal towns, about 500-600 miles from Santiago, Chile are ruined from an 8.8 earthquake, aftershocks, and two tsunamis. Still, cries of animals are heard from the rubble. Many are sick from drinking saltwater… It will take 4 to 5 days for a SACH/Kinship Circle convoy to log animal numbers, leave food/water and treat any injured or sick animals.

I wonder how we will find the money to finance all that needs to be done for thousands… Will people care enough about animals in Chile to contribute?

WHY CHILE?

Anyone who looks into their eyes would see the same sadness and confusion that I see. That look, a mix of hunger and hopelessness, was Katrina’s hallmark. For some rescuers, it is a look that can never be erased.

Dear Supporters,

I just got off the phone with Kinship Circle’s Chile contact. She described the forgotten victims of Chile’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake on 2/27/10 — followed by 20+ aftershocks, some as high as 7.2 and 6.9, and two tsunamis.

Socorro Animal Chile, SACH (Animal Relief Chile) is a coalition of Chilean animal protection groups united for the relief of an estimated 700,000 (or more) animals scattered across Dichato, Constitucion and Pichilemu, Chile. SACH sends three veterinarian-led teams into the field daily. They’ve formally requested assistance from Kinship Circle’s disaster response team.

SACH has also asked us to raise funds on their behalf, with three main goals to:

1. Erect a temporary tent shelter/clinic to care for animals abandoned in the earthquake.
2. Carry out a spay/neuter campaign.
3. Focus on transport and adoption campaigns, particularly in the U.S.

SACH needs Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid in Chile to assist with:
— Search and Rescue / Trapping
— In-Field First Aid
— Wound Transport to Veterinary Clinics
— In-Field Sustenance (food/water program)
— Assessment and Tracking of Animal Populations

A Plea From Earthquake-Stricken Chile

Dear Ms. Shoss and Kinship Circle,

The earthquake and following tsunami that Chile suffered on the early morning of the 27th of February devastated several small towns close to the coast. Thousands of animals are silent victims of this catastrophe. Hundreds of dogs live with their owners in shelters and thousands roam the ruins of towns and cities. The dogs’ guardians have lost everything and do not have the resources to feed their animals. Some opted to abandon them.

Chilean animal welfare groups and veterinarians decided to work together to help animals and created Socorro Animal Chile (Animal Relief Chile).

Socorro Animal Chile (Animal Relief Chile) formally requests assistance from Kinship Circle for our animal aid operation in Dichato, Constitucion and Pichilemu, Chile. We need trained animal disaster responders and rescue and veterinary specialists. On behalf of the animal organizations in SACH/Animal Relief Chile, we ask that Kinship Circle deploy its team to Chile to work within our animal disaster plan, in response to Chile’s earthquake.

We also ask Kinship Circle to temporarily receive donations in the United States on behalf of Socorro Animal Chile. We urgently need funding to sustain our work for animals. Difficult bureaucratic steps necessary to opening a Paypal account ourselves, in Chile, have prompted SACH to request financial aid from other countries, especially the United States. That is the reason we ask Kinship Circle to accept funds on our behalf.

- Chile has asked other countries and the UN for temporary bridges, field hospitals, satellite phones, electric generators, water purification systems, field kitchens and dialysis centers.

The impact on animals is becoming clearer, as we now have information from several of our member societies in affected regions… A center run by our member society, Centro de Rehabilitacion y Rescate de Primates (CRRP) that provides shelter for 165 mistreated primates has been damaged too. CRRP staff said that one of the monkeys has died and others are much stressed… Some animal shelters run by non-member societies are also reportedly seriously damaged. Many dogs have been left homeless, and there are reports of animals roaming around towns…. Flights into Chile are very limited. We now have confirmed tickets, to fly directly to Santiago, on Sunday night…

Faced with a natural disaster of this magnitude, there’s not much to say. So let’s not say anything. Instead, let’s do.

Below I’ve compiled a list of 1) action alerts, 2) at-home fundraisers and volunteer opportunities and 3) organizations in need of monetary donations and volunteers abroad in order to assistant in the relief efforts in Haiti. As you will see, this guide is heavy on animal rescue and animal-friendly organizations – because, hello, vegan blogger here! – however, I have included resources for human-related groups as well. In particular, the action alerts section does not discriminate.

I’ll update this post in the days and weeks to come, so please bookmark it and visit often. As of 2/8/10, I have moved it off the main page, since updates have slowed.

Introduction

As has been noted elsewhere, the situation in Haiti was dire long before the earthquake hit. Due to a centuries-long history of colonialism, enslavement, repression, corruption, and international indifference and exploitation, Haiti has been plagued by poverty and inequality. While most of the immediate efforts will be focused on emergency relief, rebuilding will take years, not weeks or months – and must extend beyond bricks and mortar if it’s to have a real, lasting impact on the lives of Haitians.

What follows are a few action alerts concerning social justice aspects of the situation in Haiti. At the time of this writing, the list only includes petitions to extend “temporary protected status” to Haitian immigrants, however, I hope to see the calls to action multiply in the future.

Vegan Bake Sales For Haiti: Over on the Post-Punk Kitchen forums, a few members got together and decided to hold vegan bake sales to benefit relief efforts in Haiti. The idea quickly snowballed, and now Isa is keeping tabs on the PPK blog. Check out each in order to network, get involved locally, and/or start a bake sale in your area. Animal Rescue & Animal-Friendly Nonprofit Organizations: Donate or Volunteer

Introduction

Look, I’ll be honest: I’m not at all comfortable providing a comprehensive list of nonprofit organizations that are raising funds to assist with relief efforts in Haiti – so I won’t. As a vegan, a feminist, and an atheist, most organizations conflict with these three core values in some way, shape or form. [And I'm not the only one; see, for example, the recent email sent out by the Secular Student Alliance (excerpted below, under "Additional Details"), which offers information to its members about secular vs. faith-based charities.] It’s not my wish to support one form of injustice while combating another.

Instead, I’ll direct you to Marji’s list over at Animal Rights & AntiOppression: Helping in Haiti. Additionally, Global Giving’s Relief Fund for Haiti is collecting monetary donations to be distributed among a number of projects, all of which are detailed on the fund’s website. InterAction also has a lengthy list of responding organizations here. Along with the aforementioned email from SSA, these will provide you with a good starting point, should you wish to make a donation to a human-focused organization.

Of course, I encourage you to research any and all organizations before making a donation; check that is legit, will use your money wisely, and is consistent with your beliefs. A few good resources in this regard are Charity Navigator, the American Institute of Philanthropy, and the Better Business Bureau. Be wary of email and telephone solicitations.

Below you can find information about animal rescue organizations operating in Haiti, as well as animal-friendly organizations involved in a human aid capacity. As with the rest of this post, I’ll include updates as I receive them.

The Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH): Spearheaded by The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), ARCH is a special coalition of animal rescue groups, formed specifically to provide emergency/disaster relief to the nonhuman animals of Haiti. As of 1/24/10, the following animal advocacy groups have joined ARCH: American Humane Association (AHA), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Antigua and Barbuda Humane Society, Best Friends Animal Society, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Humane Society International (HSI), In Defense of Animals (IDA), Kinship Circle, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Petfinder.com Foundation, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), and the United Animal Nations (UAN).

On or about 1/20/10, Sodopreca (the Dominican Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) released the following statement:

sodopreca do not sign with ARCH

SODOPRECA, feels that the contract that ARCH is offering to sodopreca does not warranty the physical integrity of our team, because do not allocate funds for security measures. The contract neither fulfils the expectation, financially speaking, for such endeavour.Further more, Sodopreca believes that there is enough potential donors to raise the necessary funding to achieve this mission. Also we do not understand why we should reject help from other groups willing to help the animals in Haiti, when that is our main objective. Sodopreca believes that no offer to help the animals in Haiti should be rejected. In the case of human victim everyone is allow to help and no help is been rejected; why should we limit the efforts of our animal’s caring people and groups. Sodopreca will receive financial assistant and other resources from any person or organization willing to help us, we alone do not have the resources to achieve the mission but all the small groups and people together for sure can accomplish this mission. An special fund it is been created for this purpose.

As many of the individual ARCH member organizations have stated that they are already working “in conjunction with” Sodopreca, this statement causes no small amount of concern. However, with so few details available (and a language barrier, to boot), it’s hard to say what exactly is going on here. If you’d like to join the conversation, we are discussing ARCH and Sodopreca both in the comments below, as well as in the comments on “Helping in Haiti” on Animal Rights & Anti-Oppression. As of 1/24/10, however, the statement has been removed from Sodopreca’s website, without explanation. The group still does not appear to be part of the ARCH coalition.

As of late January/early February, ARCH and its member organizations have moved from the Dominican Republic into Haiti; at the time of this writing, relief efforts are underway. Each individual member organization is soliciting funds on behalf of ARCH and/or its own work in the area. Keep reading for details and links. American Humane Association (AHA): AHA has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and WSPA. (See Haiti Earthquake Response; you can also keep abreast of developments on the AHA’s blog, The Humane Exchange.) AHA is soliciting donations via its Animal Emergency Services program, here; however, it’s unclear what portion of these funds will go directly towards disaster relief in Haiti.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA): The ASPCA has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and WSPA. The group is encouraging members to donate directly to ARCH founding organizations IFAW and the WSPA. (See Crisis in Haiti: How the ASPCA Is Helping.)

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA): The AVMA has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and WSPA. (See AVMA partners with ARCH for Haiti earthquake relief.) Its American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) will collect and provide monetary assistance to the ARCH. The AVMA supports all manner of animal abuse and exploitation, so donate accordingly.

Animal Balance: In its February 4, 2010 newsletter, the Food Empowerment Project recommends several Haitian animal and human advocacy organizations, including Animal Balance, “a non-profit organization of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants and volunteers. We come together to create MASH-style sterilization clinics on islands around the world.” Animal Balance currently has some Haitian relief information on the main page of its website. Antigua and Barbuda Humane Society: Best Friends reports that the Antigua and Barbuda Humane Society has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and WSPA. At the time of this writing, I was unable to find confirmation on the group’s website; however, it appears that its has donated a mobile clinic to the efforts. Best Friends Animal Society: Best Friends has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and WSPA. (See Best Friends joins Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti.) Updates will be available via its Rapid Response group. You can donate to ARCH via Best Friends here. (At the time of this writing, I was unable to find a dedicated donation page.) Best Friends is also requesting Rapid Response volunteers who can deploy to Haiti to assist in the efforts. (See Volunteers may be needed for a Haiti response for details.)

Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM): It appears that CVM already had a presence in Haiti prior to the earthquake, and is currently providing assistance to human victims. (See CVM Haiti Updates.) You can make a donation to CVM here – but please note that the CVM runs an animal agriculture/livestock purchase program in Haiti called Give a Kid a Kid. Currently, most of the group’s recommendations involve, um, praying.

Food for Life Global: On 1/21/10, Food for Life Global reported that

The first wave of International Food for Life Global volunteers are set to arrive in Santo Domingo today to join the local FFL staff in finalizing set up for our vegan food relief base camp. More volunteers from the UK, USA, Brazil, Mexico and Canada are set to arrive soon after. The first order of business is to establish working relationships with other relief agencies and the military to create the most secure and efficient service possible.

Food for Life Global is continuing to receive volunteer applications and donations from all over the world to support our efforts. A new web site will soon be created to fully document the progress of our team. Your donations are still crucial at this stage of the development and we sincerely thank all who have already come forward to support FFLG. Please continue to give whatever you can and remember: FFL can serve more than 100 meals in a crisis like this for as little as $25. So your dollars will go a long way.

We are also appealing to the public to supply our team with the best quality produce. If you are able to donate bulk organic produce or grains, please contact our office now because we have a plane standing by in Florida ready to fly over supplies.

Humane Society International (HSI): HSI has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and WSPA. Along with the HSUS, HSI has deployed its own team of veterinary rapid responders to Haiti. (See Helping Haiti.) HSI is soliciting donations for its International Disaster Fund here, however, a disclaimer on the donation form cautions that donations may not be used in Haitian relief efforts.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): Together with HSI, the HSUS has deployed a veterinary response team to Haiti. (See Lending a Helping Hand in Haiti.) Appeals for donations direct the reader to the HSI’s donation form, mentioned above.

However, I caution against donating to either the HSI or the HSUS for several reasons: 1) there is no guarantee that funds collected will go towards disaster relief in Haiti (see the HSI’s disclaimer above); 2) allegations of past misuse of Hurricane Katrina and similar disaster relief funds; and 3) recent fundraising scandals, such as those involving Fay and the Vicktory dogs.

[Please note that, in the comments, Sarah from the HSUS links to Beyond Katrina: Three Years Later, HSUS Gulf Coast Programs Flourish as "accounting for our work in Katrina here." However, I'd like to point out that 1) the HSUS does not provide a year-by-year breakdown of the expenditures; part of the criticism surrounding the HSUS's Katrina activities is that the group only spent a small fraction of funds raised until it became the target of a fraud investigation in 2006 (much like it pledged $5000 towards Fay's surgery - but only after the fundraising scandal broke); and 2) the HSUS says that it "has committed or spent more than $34 million" - keyword being "committed," 3-4 years later.]

In Defense of Animals (IDA): IDA has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and WSPA. (See IDA Prepares to Help Haiti.) IDA is accepting donations to its Animal Disaster Relief Fund here. The group is no longer seeking volunteers, but asks that:

If you have resources that might be put to use to help the animals of Haiti, or if you would like to become more involved in IDA’s disaster relief efforts, please contact disasterrelief [at] idausa.org. The best way to help the affected animals of Haiti is with your financial contributions.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW): Along with the WSPA, the IFAW is spearheading the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) to assist in the response efforts. (See IFAW, WSPA, and other groups band together to help animals in Haiti.) You can make a donation (seemingly directly to the ARCH) here.

Kinship Circle: Kinship Circle has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and the WSPA. Kinship Circle is currently soliciting donations for on-the-ground rescue efforts, as well as communication and documentation, here. (I have crossposted Kinship Circle’s alerts below; see also Field Notes & Rescue Photos.)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): PETA has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and the WSPA. (See Haiti and More: How You Can Help Animals in Natural Disasters.) While PETA is soliciting donations, there does not seem to be a guarantee that all the monies collected will go towards relief efforts in Haiti. Additionally, the group is already talking “euthanasia,” which makes me nervous. (Not because I don’t believe in true mercy killings, but because my definition of “mercy” varies greatly from PETA’s.) So please, if you wish to donate to ARCH, go with IFAW, the WSPA or similar. Save the “Whales,” Boycott PETA. Etc., etc. etc.

Petfinder Foundation: Best Friends reports that the Petfinder.com Foundation has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and the WSPA. (See ARCH Team Enters Haiti, Rescue Plan Forthcoming.) The Foundation appears to be collecting donations on behalf of IFAW on its website. (See Earthquake in Haiti – Please Help Now!)

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA): The RSPCA has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and the WSPA. (See Help for animals arrives in Haiti.) You can donate to the RSPCA’s emergency relief efforts here, however, it does not appear that the funds collected will necessarily go towards the group’s efforts in Haiti.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International (SPCAI): The SPCAI reports that it sent an emergency response team to Haiti in the aftermath of the quake in order to assess the situation; it now appears that the SPCAI is no longer working in the area. Instead, it has partnered with the Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM), providing the group a grant to help with its efforts, primarily to rescue donkeys and other “livestock” / “pack” animals. Similarly, the SPCAI has supported the CVM’s “Gift a Kid a Kid” program in past years. (See Earthquake in Haiti: Animal Response Report.) The group is currently soliciting funds for its Emergency Grants program; however, in light of the group’s support of animal purchase/breeding programs, I urge you to donate accordingly.

Sodopreca (the Dominican Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals): According to SuperVegan, Sodopreca is “the only Dominican animal group going to Haiti specifically to rescue animals.” The group is/was scheduled to leave for Haiti on 1/15. As of 1/16/10, several other animal advocacy groups, such as the HSUS and the WSPA, report that they will be working with Sodopreca in Haiti. Sodopreca’s website is in Spanish, but you can view an English translation here. If you’d like to make a donation, Sodopreca has a donation button on its website, in the bottom left-hand sidebar.

The United Animal Nations (UAN): UAN has joined the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) established by IFAW and the WSPA. It appears that the UAN is collecting and redistributing monetary donations for ARCH rather than providing on-the-ground services itself. (See Earthquake in Haiti.) You can donate to ARCH via the UAN here. UAN is also reporting on ARCH’s efforts in Haiti on its Emergency Response Blog.

Veterinarians Without Borders: The group has not yet made a statement about planned relief efforts (if any) on its website. (Hat tip, SuperVegan.)

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA): Along with the IFAW, the WSPA is spearheading the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) to assist in the response efforts. Animal groups pledge $1.1M dollars for long-term animal aid in Haiti 3/4/10 — Animal Relief Coalition Of Haiti (ARCH) announced a $1.1 million agreement with the Haitian government to improve and repair animal welfare conditions in the aftermath of January’s ruinous earthquake. Over 20 animal protection groups worldwide, including Kinship Circle, formed ARCH under joint leadership of World Society For Protection of Animals and International Fund For Animal Welfare. The ambitious long-term plan covers:

* DISEASE PREVENTION NETWORK: To protect people and animals from disease outbreaks, a laboratory and staff will carry out targeted vaccination campaigns for Rabies, Anthrax and other diseases.

* VETERINARY TRAINING: Our goal is to train at least 200 Haitian veterinarians and vet technicians for current/future animal welfare issues.

* VACCINATION COLD STORAGE: A “cold chain” is crucial to keep vaccinations fresh and stable through delivery.

* ANIMAL POPULATION STUDIES: Haiti’s animal demographics have changed dramatically due to recent disasters. Updated data is vital to reach animals.

ARCH’s mobile vet clinic makes rounds to underserved areas such as Pelerin where Haitians line-up to have animals vaccinated. According to the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture, there are some 5 million farmed animals in Haiti (not including domestic fowl), and about 500,000 dogs in Port-au-Prince.

Launched By Bravo TV’s Top Chef Contestant

Hollywood, Florida — Haitian-born Ron Duprat of Bravo’s hit series “Top Chef” has teamed up with three fellow contestants — Mattin Noblia, Hector Santiago and Michael Voltagggio — to welcome other fine chefs nationwide in an all-chef Relief Benefit on St. Valentine’s Day for his native land.

ON FEBRUARY 14, 2010: Participating chefs and restaurants will donate a percentage of their receipts to Hearts for Haiti: An American Dining Relief Benefit. They’re there. Haiti’s dogs (and other animals). These commonly taunted street dogs were timid pre-quake, but are now emerging in some press photos. Kinship Circle is working round the clock with other animal protection organizations to get resources to them. There are many challenges…the scale of human tragedy, lack of security, limited access…

January 12, 2010 changed everything for the small Caribbean nation of Haiti. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake collided with its capital, Port-au-Prince. Human casualties are already estimated in the tens of thousands, as the cries of people trapped beneath concrete begin to fade.

Task forces and troops are assembling worldwide to aid Haiti’s human victims. But Kinship Circle followers also want to know about the animals. The breadth of destruction in this disaster has been compared to Katrina. Still, animal repercussions are different.

As many as 5 million farm animals (primarily goats and a lot of chickens!) and native wild animals need help. A mostly homeless dog population, struggling to survive before the earthquake, needs comforting hands. In fact an unknown number of “community” cats and dogs await relief.

There cannot be a dedicated animal presence on the ground until the human crisis is more stabilized. However, Kinship Circle is contributing funding and volunteer support to the coalition right now.

Recommended Secular Charities for Haitian Relief Efforts

On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the impoverished nation of Haiti less than 20 miles from the nation’s capital. The disaster, combined with Haiti’s high population density, crumbling architecture, and widespread poverty, has created a tragedy in which death tolls may top 100,000. Over three million people have been affected by the quake. The infrastructure of the area has been devastated, and many skilled workers (including health care providers) who could help with recovery are missing or dead. Haiti is in urgent need of assistance in this crisis.

Many of us want to reach out to help those who are suffering in the wake of this disaster. But as secularists, we are wary of those organizations that would include proselytization in their relief efforts.

The Foundation Beyond Belief has recommended several organizations that have received high ratings from Charity Navigator and take a secular approach to their charitable work. We are reposting their list here so that Secular Student Alliance members, supporters and friends are able to find organizations through which they can support Haitian relief efforts. The links will take you to the Charity Navigator page for that organization, where you can find more information and make a donation.

Foundation Beyond Belief writes: “MADRE is a small organization with a high efficiency rating and a good track record in disaster relief that does not mix worldview with its charity. ActionAid International is an outstanding organization that is efficient, non-sectarian, and works with a small budget. International Relief Teams, AmeriCares, Doctors Without Borders, and Partners In Health all receive high ratings for the secular charitable work they do.”

At this time, Kinship Circle is not providing back-up volunteers for any animal emergency response group. However, we are watching and reporting which groups go where — so you can support animal efforts in Haiti via donations and stay informed about the plight of animal victims.

The earthquake hit on 1/12/10, so animal responders cannot gain clearance until humanitarian efforts are fully underway. Fortunately, first responders from China, Spain, France, the United States…are mobilizing teams to aid the financially strapped Haitian government. Haiti Earthquake: IFAW Emergency Team on Alert — IFAW’s Emergency Relief team is on high alert to help in Haiti after a devastating earthquake struck near the capital of Port-au-Prince on January 12. As always with disasters like this, the humanitarian rescue efforts will be the focus in the first week or so… After immediate human needs are met, IFAW’s Emergency Response team will be ready to assist the animal victims in any way that we can.

WORLD SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS (WSPA)

WSPA Animals In Disasters Blog — Since this morning, we have been in talks with the United Nations (under serious stress themselves since their office in Port-au-Prince has collapsed, with 15 staff members dead and 20 still missing) and the local Red Cross Chapters to gain a further understanding of the impact on animals caught up in the situation.

Our Disaster Liaison Officer from Panama, Jorge Alcidez Gonzalez who also works as the Head of the K9 unit of Civil Defence, is now travelling out of Panama with a team of specially trained veterinary staff to assess the destruction and welfare needs of the animals. Jorge and his brave team…will carry veterinary supplies to treat any injured animals that they come across. I’ve also arranged for him to feedback the extent of damage and where we can be of most help, as quickly as possible…

Dear Humane Society Of Missouri, Cass County and Raymore, Missouri Officials:

I am shocked by the Labor Day 2009 shooting death of the Wesner family’s 19-year-old cat Tobey in Raymore, Missouri I understand a Raymore police officer fired two bullets into the elderly cat’s head, wrapped the body inside a plastic bag and tossed Tobey into a city dumpster.

As you know, Tobey had slipped out of his house and roamed into a nearby garage where a neighbor forced him out with hose spray. Raymore police were summoned to apprehend a “large, vicious, feral cat.” Though Kelly Wesner describes her six-pound cat as declawed, deaf, and on prescription meds — a supervisor directed an officer to “put [the cat] down” in a remote area. Unbelievably, no one involved with the cat’s slaying has been penalized.

I trust that an unbiased internal investigation is underway. If inquiries by the police department and/or Humane Society of Missouri warrant animal cruelty charges, these officers should be prosecuted under Missouri Revised Statues, Chapter 578. Punitive action is reasonable, whether Tobey’s killing stems from malicious intent or stupidity. At the very least, the unprovoked killing of a family’s companion animal denotes police misconduct.

When officers encounter any animal perceived as sick, aggressive, or feral — they should know how to neutralize the animal without resorting to lethal force. I commend Captain Roger Mayberry for arranging such training after Tobey’s death. Officers ought to be able to distinguish anxiety, fear and protective behaviors from genuinely hostile or diseased behavior. If they can’t, an experienced animal control officer needs to make that decision.

Circumstances in the case do not make sense. If police believe Tobey had rabies, why did they destroy his head and discard his remains? Certainly they know that the brain of any potentially rabid animal is preserved for analysis. Moreover, this was not their decision to make. Strays, even those deemed dangerous, are taken to shelters rather than gunned down in fields.

Armed law officers displayed an utter lack of judgment. Their response was inappropriate and demands your utmost attention. Please inform me of any progress in this disturbing case.

Dear City Officials of Santa Monica and Malibu, California:

I thank both Santa Monica and Malibu City Council Members for their support of a ban on the declawing of cats. Your informed position on this inhumane practice is highly commendable. I urge officials in both cities to enact the proposed bans and thereby establish a precedent for communities worldwide.

Declawing is already illegal or restricted in over 20 countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada. The Humane Society of the United States and ASPCA oppose declawing. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons also rejects the operation, describing it as “mutilation.”

Overwhelming evidence shows declawing causes severe behavioral problems that often lead guardians to abandon their animals in overcrowded shelters. Undesirable behavior in 33% of declawed cats begins post-procedure, according to a 2001 study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association (JAVMA). National shelter surveys reveal that 70-80% of cats surrendered for offensive behavior are declawed.

San Francisco Care and Control, East Bay SPCA, Palo Alto Humane Society, and other shelters oppose declawing. Los Angeles SPCA portrays the act of declawing cats as “cruel, unnecessary, and inhumane.”

Cats with intact claws are relinquished for human-related reasons such as “moving” or “new baby,” whereas declawed felines enter shelters with behavioral issues, claims shelter director William Lombardi of Gloucester County, New Jersey. “When a cat is brought into the shelter because it is biting or (not using the litter box),” Lombardi says, “the first thing we ask is, ‘Is it declawed?’” For the estimated 70% of surrendered, declawed cats who are euthanized, the surgery is a literal death sentence.

Moreover, declawing generates suffering and permanent disability. The invasive procedure amputates not only the claw, but also the entire last “knuckle” of a cat’s toes. Veterinary experts recognize laser or scalpel declawing as among the most painful surgeries routinely performed.

When declaw bans reach the floor for a vote in Santa Monica and Malibu, I encourage both cities to endorse this model legislation.

A convergence of natural disasters has left millions of people in distress across Asia and the Pacific. Since 9/26/09, a total of six countries have been hit by flooding, a typhoon, a tsunami and earthquakes.

PHILIPPINES: TROPICAL STORM ONDOY

- Worst flooding in 40 years. Parts of Manila under six feet of water.

- Hundreds of thousands of people in evacuation centers.

- The Philippines — along with Viet Nam, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Cambodia — are also bracing for Tropical Storm Parma.

- Government of the Philippines is soliciting international aid.

ON THE GROUND 9/30/09: Battered by Typhoon Ketsana on 9/26/09, the Philippine capital Manila has suffered massive flooding, with over 200 deaths and displacement of thousands of people and animals. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is racing to help, while struggling themselves… After two days trapped inside without food, PAWS directors Heidi Guzon and Gwen Protasio, and 60 animals under their care, made it to safety. The head of PAWS Disaster Relief Team, May Felix, lost one of her own dogs when flash floods hit her house… The PAWS shelter is functioning without electricity as an evacuation centre for animals. Since PAWS is very close to Marikina, where thousands are stranded with animals — tents, cages, cat/dog food and batteries are urgently needed for rescued animals.

10/2/09 REPORT FROM MICHAEL BOOTH, IFAW ER RESPONDER and communications officer in Philippines: After Typhoon Ketsana (aka Ondoy) flooded huge areas of Manila and surrounding districts, International Fund for Animal Welfare arrived in Manila at 3:50am on Oct. 1, 2009. Following meetings (with Animal Welfare Coalition and Dept. of Agriculture), IFAW’s team split to reach mud-covered Marikina and underwater Pasig. I headed for the water with Best Friends Rapid Response manager Rich Crook, who joined IFAW.

We teamed up with PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society)…and after coordination with Philippine Army, Navy and Military officials, we left in military trucks, then by boat and on foot to areas chest-high in water. That first day we helped many struggling animals by supplying food, water and Medication. Two came back with us for extended care at the animal shelter.

INDONESIA: We’re saddened by the loss of life in the Indonesia earthquake. [Best Friends has] been in contact with ProFauna Indonesia, and they’ll do everything possible to help animals. However, it’s a logistically difficult situation. Padang, in Sumatra where the earthquake struck, lies 400 miles to the west of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Travel to that region is complicated by earthquake damage itself and the congestion of relief teams. Please keep animals in Sumatra in your thoughts and prayers.

5. WSPA Sends 3 Veterinarian-Led Response Teams

WPSA has deployed three veterinarian-led Disaster Assessment and Response Teams (DART) to bring aid to the thousands of animal victims left helpless after tragedy struck the Philippines, Samoa and Indonesia.

THE PHILIPPINES: Ravaged by recent storms, the Philippines now braces for Cyclone Parma — expected to hit as either a category 4 or 5 (super-cyclone) storm. WSPA is working with our member society PAWS to provide emergency shelter, food and care for thousands of companion animals left homeless.

SAMOA: After a deadly tsunami wiped out entire villages and killed more than 100 people WSPA deployed a DART to the islands. Led by Disaster Management Veterinarian Dr. Juan Carlos Murillo, the team will ascertain the tsunami’s impact on the island’s animals as well as treat animal victims.

INDONESIA: Two powerful earthquakes rippled across the island of Sumatra, creating widespread destruction. WSPA has deployed a DART to assess animal welfare needs; we hope to have a clearer picture in the coming days.

Due to the massive flooding in the Atlanta area, and specifically Cobb County, many people displaced by floodwaters left their pets with Cobb County Animal Control. The shelter was slammed before the floods, so they had no room to house newcomers. They were desperate to find rescue for dogs already housed there or face euthanasia…

I’ve taken in 9 dogs and have no place to house them, other then boarding at two vet offices. This is very temporary, and although the vets have generously boarded the dogs at a discount, this will add up quickly — not to mention the other costs for rabies vaccines, altering, etc.

All of dogs below are current on routine shots, including rabies. All are microchipped, dewormed, and tested negative for heartworm.

BEAR is a super sweet 3 year old chow/shepherd mix girl. Shelter staff say she is good with kids and pets and is leash trained. Her bottom is all in a wiggle when you pet her.

MAC is a 3 year old, unaltered male collie mix. He is so much cuter in person! He arrived with a flea allergy, since treated. He’s bathed and his fur is growing back nicely.

BIG RED is a fantastic dog! He is a young retriever mix who follows commands, is leash trained, and loves to play ball.

Poor ELLIE… Such a beautiful and sweet 4 year old girl whose family could no longer keep her. She is spayed, leash trained and housetrained.

BALENTINO is an adorable 3 year old boy. His family was unable to keep him, though he did everything right. He is housetrained, leash trained, good with kids and pets, and very well behaved.

BARNEY is such a cute little Chihuahua mix who is 4 years old, and 15 lbs. He came to the shelter with his buddy Fred.

FRED is Barney’s sidekick. He is 4 years old and 13 lbs. You couldn’t go wrong with these 2 lovebugs.

KRISTY is a 5 month old golden mix puppy. She won’t be too big when she grows up…she is only 18 lbs. now and so sweet! We likely have rescue placement or a potential adopter for her.

LEAH is a super sweet 3 year old girl, maybe basset/lab? She is spayed, house and leash trained. The shelter says she is good with kids and pets. She was adopted a couple of months ago, but the family decided their lifestyle was too active for a pet so they dumped her back in doggy jail.

As of Monday, 9/21/09, Kinship Circle has monitored floods across the Southeast U.S., in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Kentucky and Mississippi. Our small volunteer staff has contacted various agencies on the ground to offer support from our network of independently trained responders. There has been no direct call (as of 9/24/09) for out-of-state volunteers, but rescuers are needed to pull from flood-overcrowded shelters.

Rivers crested above flood levels in stricken areas, but most waters are receding. Below is a brief report. We’ll update you if circumstances change.

SUMMARY 9/22/09: Georgia SPCA is the lead agency on the ground for flood-affected regions of hard-hit Georgia. They’ve opened an emergency shelter for animal flood victims, including those whose guardians were forced to evacuate. The shelter is located in Columbus, about 90 miles south of Atlanta.
