In post-Ike Texas, large groups (such as HSUS) have reportedly invalidated the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) smaller groups (such as MuttShack) had formed with local authorities to work in Beaumont, Texas. Such alleged hostility made it increasingly difficult to obtain a realistic snapshot of the animal situation in Ike-ravaged areas. There was concern about the amount of time some large groups devoted to removing other emergency rescue groups, rather than helping animals in the field. Below is some of what we know — straightforward, without a “public relations” angle.

Kinship Circle: LaFourche Parish: Volunteers/Supplies Needed Now

9/15/08: Volunteers & Supplies Needed In Flooded LaFourche, LA

VOLUNTEERS CALLED TO LAFOURCHE PARISH

Kinship Circle and MuttShack volunteers are needed in LaFourche Parish, Louisiana where MuttShack has a joint MOU with LaFourche Parish, by and between La Fourche Parish Government, COLAA (the Coalition of Louisiana Animal Advocates), MuttShack Animal Rescue and Humane Society of Louisiana.

La Fourche Parish Animal Shelter was destroyed in recent storms. Animals need care now, even during cleanup and rebuilding. A main supply structure (60ft X 80ft) was ravaged as well, and cannot serve as a temporary holding area for animals until we construct a cinderblock foundation (or substitute with plastic/rubberized pallets). This marshy area is prone to flooding, even with minimal rainfall. All supplies and vaccines were ruined when power went down, but power is currently back on.

The return of residents — along with area properties and perimeter fencing wrecked in storms — promises a large influx of rescues and surrenders. Volunteers can help counsel residents and urge them to care for their own animals, as we provide kenneling, crates and food.

As an adjunct to the recovery effort, the MOU partners will try to implement a TNR and Spay/Neuter program — perhaps attracting residents with food incentives so they bring in their animals.

MuttShack responded valiantly to Hurricane Gustav, assisting Louisiana with:

* Over 120 trucks
* Trained volunteers
* Rapid Deployment Teams of Incident Command people
* Post storm rescue
* Mass care and sheltering teams

MuttShack worked with parishes throughout LA to rescue, repair and transport animals to safe locations in at least five states around the country. We worked with many partner organizations and value our associations.

Kinship Circle: Animal Evacuations In A Post-Katrina World

KINSHIP CIRCLE PRIMARY / LOUISIANA’S FIRST ANIMAL EVACUATIONS, POST-KATRINA

Dear Kinship Circle Primary,

Please except our apologies for the lack of alerts in recent weeks. We were in New Orleans from 8/27 to 9/1, assisting with animal evacuations after Hurricane Gustav. We’ve continued to manage volunteers, working with MuttShack Animal Rescue on post-Gustav issues — and are on standby to help animals in Hurricane Ike, if necessary. Gratefully, hurricane season won’t last much longer…so we can resume animal advocacy alerts! Kinship Circle

9/10/08: Hurricane Gustav - Photo Log

It was surreal. We shifted from awards mode to action mode as Hurricane Gustav loomed behind the Katrina Animal Memorial 8/29/08 in New Orleans. When Humane Society of Louisiana’s magical day ended, Kinship Circle set-up a volunteer intake table to assist MuttShack Animal Rescue for the evacuation of pets with their people. The Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART) implemented a system for animal evacuations — that did not exist during Katrina. Photos courtesy of Kinship Circle.

Kinship Circle: Hurricane Ike Looms: Volunteers Report Now

9/7/08: Hurricane Ike Looms - Report To MuttShack Base Now
Kinship Circle Is Coordinating Volunteers For MuttShack

Help Needed At Water/Wind Wrecked Denham Springs Shelter

We still need volunteers in Denham Springs, Louisiana (where MuttShack is situated) to restore the area’s shelter. An initial 150 dogs and 250 cats required evacuation and the situation here remains dire. At least 40 cats have been transported out to a no-kill shelter in Arkansas…

Incoming Volunteers On Standby For Hurricane Ike Evacs & Aftermath:

Hurricane Ike is predicted to make landfall as early as Saturday, which means people/pet evacuations may begin Thursday of next week. MuttShack is still under agreement to provide animal transport to Mega Shelters (emergency shelters where city-assisted evacuees live alongside their animals) and staff Parish Pick-up Points.
