Subject: Message from Chris DeRose – Requiem For a Pit Bull

Requiem for a Pit Bull

“Christina’s Court” will be airing a segment called, “Requiem for a Pit Bull,” that is inspiring and uplifting. The show’s Executive Producer, Peter Brennan, also was the Executive Producer of “A Current Affair” and “Hard Copy,” as well as the Creator of “A Current Affair.” Being the maverick he is, he allowed me to produce and report on dozens of hard core animal rights stories that no one else would touch with a ten foot pole. Peter alone has made strong animal issues in media a common household occurrence on many TV networks and cable stations. Now he has “Christina’s Court” and already he is taking no prisoners by having a show that sets a precedent in how animal cruelty should be dealt with. PLEASE watch the show below, it’s a half hour segment and worth every second of your time. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Chris DeRose
LCA President & Founder

Click here for “Requiem for a Pit Bull”

This case illustrated the divide between pit bull lovers and the people who fear them, right or wrong. The TV court show, “Christina’s Court,” has heard many cases where an ill-trained pit bull has caused injury and tragedy when let run loose. But in this case, the dog was a two-year-old hand raised well trained and much loved member of the family who played with other dogs and had never had a fight. Citing his fear of the dog, the neighbor went to his gun cabinet, took out a .22 caliber weapon and fired five bullets into the young dog. Apparently the reputation of his breed cost him his life.

Maybe there’s a lesson here about tolerance in general. The case is the “Christina’s Court” entry in the 2008 Daytime Emmy Awards. Feel free to forward the link to your friends and associates.

Subject: Puppy Thrown Off Cliff – Statement from Chris DeRose 3.4.2008

LCA has been notified of a very disturbing video showing a smiling U.S. Marine in Iraq throwing a puppy off a cliff. LCA fully supports U.S. troops and believes this situation does not reflect on U.S. soldiers that are doing their best and putting their lives on the line. However, the act of a U.S. soldier committing animal cruelty is completely unacceptable under any circumstances.

“This video that everyone has seen is atrocious. U.S. Marine David Mortari and the unidentified Marine in the video are absolute cowards and a disgrace to the men and women of this country who valiantly defend the U.S. There is absolutely no excuse for this behavior. These two men shouldn’t be wearing the uniform. I demand that these individuals be held responsible for such a despicable and cowardly act.

When a U.S. soldier is representing America overseas and during war time, it is crucial for any heinous act to be fully investigated. LCA demands for elected officials to put pressure on the military to do a complete and thorough investigation. The correlation between cruelty to animals and cruelty to humans has been proven time and time again. These Marines must be punished.” states LCA President Chris DeRose.

More Kinship Circle Factsheets

According to an USA Today article released last week a new program announced by a coalition of three government agencies – the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Toxicology Program and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – could lead to the end of animal testing to evaluate the safety for humans of new chemicals and drugs.

These agencies have signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” to develop and implement the new methods. Historically, toxicity has been identified by injecting chemicals into animals and seeing whether they were harmed. According to the director of the NIH’s National Genome Research Institute, Francis Collins, “It was expensive, time-consuming, used animals in large numbers, and it didn’t always work.”

The agencies acknowledge that full implementation of the shift in toxicity testing could take years because it will require scientific validation of the new approaches.

The new systems the agencies hope to use rely on human cells grown in test tubes and computer-driven testing machines. They allow the scientists to examine potentially toxic compounds in the lab rather than injecting them into animals.

All the data produced will be put into a public database.

Last Chance for Animals, and other anti-vivisection organizations, have been fighting for the millions of animals in laboratories for over 20 years! This is great news. While we know these tests will not end the suffering of animals overnight, it is a positive step in the right direction.

A Message from Chris DeRose

Animal Activists in Prison Need Your Support
Write to Jonathan Paul & Other Animal Acitivists in Prison!

(Names and addresses are in box below.)

As you know Jonathan Paul, a dedicated animal and environmental activist, is serving a 51 month sentence after pleading guilty to burning the Cavel West Slaughterhouse (a horse meat slaughterhouse) in Redmond, Oregon in 1997.

Jonathan is one of many animal rights activists now serving time on behalf of their dedication to the animal rights movement.

Jonathan was arrested with 10 other activists connected to the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front as part of the so-called Green Scare.

Jonathan has been in prison since October and has been too ill for recent visitors. His birthday was on January 31st and he needs support from activists around the country now.

Visit the new Support Jonathan website and read Jonathan’s blog and learn how you can assist and encourage Jonathan.

Please remember to write to Jonathan and the other animal activists who are serving time in prison (contact information is below). Your letters can provide a lifeline.

On February 14th, LCA will observe The 20th Annual National Pet Theft Awareness Day! Each year, LCA educates the public on the dangers of pet theft with the help of individuals and other animal organizations throughout the United States.

An estimated 2 million companion animals are stolen in the United States annually. Unfortunately, most stolen pet cases go unreported, so it is almost impossible to know exact numbers of missing animals, but we do know is that pet theft is a real threat! Stolen pets are sold on the street for top dollar (especially popular breeds), shipped to puppy mills for breeding, sold to animal research labs, trained for dogfights or used as “bait” by dogfighters. It is the responsibility of caretakers to protect their pets from these horrible fates. Visit www.StolenPets.com to learn how you can protect your pet.

Do you want to get involved and spread the word about Pet Theft?

Join LCA’s National Pet Theft Awareness Day and help us reach out to the public on pet theft. See below for all the event details and pet theft materials!

Live in the Los Angeles area? LCA will be observing Pet Theft Awareness Day “on the go!” the weekend before Valentine’s Day.
Contact Your Legislators Today!
Help Protect Pets in the Final Farm Bill!

Did you get inspired to help animals by watching “Dealing Dogs?”

Here is how you can make a difference…

Please contact as many conferees as you can, making those who represent your district or state a priority.

See below for all the details.

Thank you on behalf of the animals!

Both the House and the Senate passed versions of the Farm Bill with The Pet Safety & Protection Act (PSPA) attached as an amendment. This provides us with a unique opportunity to protect companion animals, one that may not come again for another 5 years!

We are at a pivotal point! House and Senate members of the Agriculture Committee will be meeting soon to iron out the differences between their respective versions of the Farm Bill. We must act now in order to get the PSPA over the finish line!

This final stage of the process is expected to take place soon, we need you to contact your representatives today!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Members on the Agriculture conference committee may seek to eliminate or weaken the PSPA. It is essential that all conferees be encouraged to support the House version in the FARM bill, as the Senate version includes a 5-year phase-in period, as well as potentially problematic ambiguous language.

Please contact as many conferees as you can, making those who represent your district or state a priority. (A list of conferees and their phone and fax numbers and mailing addresses can be found by clicking here: House – Senate.)

Please contact the conferees as soon as possible.

First Priority: Call your representatives! Tell them that you support The Pet Safety & Protection Act in the Farm Bill. The PSPA will keep companion animals safe.

Second Priority: Fax your letters to the Congressional offices. See writing tips below.

Third Priority: Send your letters by the U.S. Postal Service, but please send them immediately to ensure they are cleared through security and delivered to the Congressional offices as soon as possible.

When contacting legislators, please mention:

    * Adoption of the PSPA will prevent illegally acquired dogs and cats from being sold by random source, Class B dealers for research.
* You appreciate that both chambers of Congress have attached the PSPA to their versions of the FARM Bill.
* You respectfully request that he or she support the House version of the PSPA and hope that this will be reported out of conference.

You may also wish to request that a written response be sent to you, as both a way to formally acknowledge your call, letter of fax and to confirm the stated position on this issue.

Subject: ADOPT – Don’t Buy This Holiday Season & Join The Puppy Store Protest!

This holiday season children and adults of all ages will be given a new companion animal. Unfortunately, the cute little puppy or kitten for sale in the pet store or on the internet probably came from a “puppy mill,” a mass breeding facility that put profits over the health and well-being of puppies and their parents.Happy Rescue Puppy

Each year over 2 million puppy mill puppies are sold in the United States. Puppies travel hundred of miles in pickup trucks, tractor trailers, and/or airplanes, often without adequate food, water, ventilation, or shelter. If the puppies survive the horrors of transport, conditions don’t imporve much when they reach their destination; young dogs kept in small cages without exercise, love, or human contact tend to develop undesireable behaviors and may bark excessively or become destructive or unsociable. Puppies that do not sell and become too old to be a valuable product are either killed, become “brood bitches,” or are sold to laboratories for research or product testing.

Spread the word, ADOPT – Don’t Buy! To stop the puppy mill industry, consumers must stop buying animals from pet stores. You can create change!

Please ADOPT – Don’t Buy this Holiday Season!

LCA is asking you to get involved in our ADOPT -Don’t Buy campaign.

Here are a couple quick and easy ways to make a difference.

1. ADOPT – Don’t Buy - Did you know that approximately 1 in 4 cats and dogs in shelters are pure bred? Contact a local shelter or rescue organization if you are considering a new companion animal. Remember, companion animals should never be given as a gift without first considering the lifestyle and the overall fit of the animal and the new guardian!

2. Spread the Word - Talk to your family and friends about puppy mills and the problems of companion animal overpopulation. Contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer [at] lcanimal.org and request LCA’s puppy mill brochures.

3. Reach Out - Volunteer at your local shelter this holiday season (and throughout the year). Spend time walking dogs or playing with cats. A couple hours of your time can provide a great deal of comfort for these needy animals.

4. Speak Out – Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper about the pet stores or puppy mills in your community. A short, polite letter is most effective. Contact LCA for more information.

5. Take a Stand - Join us at our event in Bevely Hills or organize your own demonstration or outreach event in front of a pet store that sells animals. See below for event details.

ADOPT – Don’t Buy! Holiday Pet Store Demonstration

California residents join us at this vital outreach event in Beverly Hills! Help protest against the new puppy store in Beverly Hills during the busy shopping season and spread the message ADOPT – Don’t Buy!

WHEN: Saturday, December 22
Noon-3:00pm

WHERE: Posh Puppy
9699 Wilshire Blvd

CONTACT: Lisa Beal, 310-271-6096 x27

Materials will be provided, but you are welcome to be creative and bring your own sign.

In the spirit of the season we are asking all particpants to avoid confrontational interactions and assist us in encouraging members of the public to ADOPT – Don’t Buy this holiday season.

NOT IN LOS ANGELES? PROTEST A PET STORE IN YOUR AREA ! Contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@lcanimal.org for more information and supplies! Create change this holiday season.

U.S. Congress Gives Pet Safety and Protection Act a Green Light
Contact Your Legislators NOW!

December 14, 2007

Dear Humanitarian:

Our companion animals may soon be safe from thieves who make easy money by obtaining them illegally, then selling them for experimentation. The U.S. Congress is poised to adopt the Pet Safety and Protection Act (PSPA), also known as “Buck’s Bill.” The legislation is named after Buck, pictured at left, a dog who was rescued from notorious animal dealer C.C. Baird – the subject of the HBO special “Dealing Dogs.” Sadly, because of a lack of much needed veterinary care, Buck died. Though he was rescued, he could not survive the ravages previously inflicted by heartworms.

Buck’s Bill would prevent Class B dealers and unlicensed individuals from selling “random source” dogs and cats to laboratories. As we enter what we hope is the home stretch, we need your help to ensure success.

The House of Representatives passed the PSPA in July as part of the FARM Bill, and it has already been accepted as an amendment to the Senate FARM Bill. We anticipate passage of the Senate version of the FARM Bill today or next week. Next, House and Senate Agriculture Committee Members will go to conference to iron out any differences in the language of their respective bills. This final stage of the process is expected to take place in mid-January 2008.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Anti-animal welfare members on the conference committee may seek to eliminate or weaken the PSPA.

   1. You can send letters by the U.S. Postal Service, but please send them immediately to ensure they are cleared through security and delivered to the Congressional offices as soon as possible.

   2. You also can fax your letters to the offices. Please be sure they are sent by mid-January.

   3. Another option is to call conferees once they return on Monday, January 14th.

You may also wish to request that a written response be sent to you, as both a way to formally acknowledge your call and to confirm the stated position on this issue.

Please share our “Dear Humanitarian” letter with family, friends and co-workers, and encourage them to contact their Members of Congress, too. As always, thank you very much for your help. Happy Holidays and best wishes for the New Year (including adoption of this measure!).

Sincerely,

Great News! The Senate Passed the Farm Bill with the Pet Safety & Protection Act Attached!
Contact Your Legislators Now!

Did you get inspired to help animals by watching “Dealing Dogs?”

Here is how you can make a difference…

Please contact as many conferees as you can, making those who represent your district or state a priority.

See below for all the details.

Thank you on behalf of the animals!

Great News! The Senate passed its version of the Farm Bill with the Pet Safety & Protection Act (PSPA) attached as an ammendment! (The House also passed the PSPA in July as part of the Farm Bill.)

The next step – the House and Senate Agriculture Committee Members will go to conference to iron out any differences in the language of their respective bills. This final stage of the process is expected to take place in mid-January 2008. See below how you can help pass the PSPA.

“The Senate passing the Farm Bill with the PSPA attached is terrific news for companion animals and LCA. We have been investigating and busting Class B dealers for over 20 years. This legislation is greatly needed. Last year, HBO released ‘Dealing Dogs,’ LCA’s undercover investigation into pet theft and subsequent bust of the nation’s most notorious Class B dealer, C.C. Baird. ‘Dealing Dogs’ was seen by millions and LCA is thankful that Congress is paying attention to the pet theft issue. We look forward to the passage of the Farm Bill,” said LCA Founder & President Chris DeRose. “The countless animals that have been stolen and/or abused at the hands of B dealers deserve this Bill. Please help and contact your Legislators now!”

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Anti-animal welfare/rights members on the conference committee may seek to eliminate or weaken the PSPA.
