Subject: Dealing Dogs Nominated for Emmy & PSPA moves forward!

Great news for the animals! The Pet Safety and Protection Act passed the House of Representatives, “Dealing Dogs” has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and HBO is re-airing “Dealing Dogs” - keep reading for all the details!

You made the difference! Thanks to your phone calls and faxes, the House of Representatives accepted the Pet Safety and Protection Act (aka “Buck’s Bill”) as an amendment to the Farm Bill, which prevents companion animals from being sold into research! More good news is the amendment also bars the use of live animals in medical device sales demonstrations and increases fines for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

This is a major step forward for “Buck’s Bill” (shown in photo, rescued from Martin Creek Kennels) and for companion animals across the country. But this fight is not over! We will keep you updated on its progress and how you can help push “Buck’s Bill” to victory.

“Dealing Dogs” Nominated for Two Emmy Awards!

“Dealing Dogs,” HBO’s Genesis Award winning documentary about LCA’s undercover investigation into pet theft, has been nominated for two Emmy Awards - Best Cable Documentary and Best Investigative Documentary. This is a great opportunity for a whole new audience to learn from “Dealing Dogs” and to get involved.

LCA: More Elephants Die in Captivity - What Can You Do to Help?

Subject: More Elephants Die in Captivity - What Can You Do to Help?

“Elephant Sanctuaries-Not Captivity” Update; Two More Elephants Die in Captivity

MONA

Mona, the Asian elephant who lived in captivity at the Birmingham Zoo since 1955, was euthanized last Thursday, June 21st. Mona was found down twice last week in her enclosure. She was euthanized after she failed to get to her feet with assistance after the second downed instance. A necropsy is being performed to determine the cause of her illness.

Mona was captured in the wild in 1951 and has lived alone in her 1,000 square foot enclosure since the death of her companion, Susie, over two years ago.

See below to find out what you can do to get involved in the fight “Elephant Sanctuaries-Not Captivity.”

CAROL

Carol, the Asian elephant who gained fame for her appearance on “The Tonight Show” and her ability to paint, was euthanized last Tuesday, June 19th. 40 year old Carol was born in Thailand and brought to the San Diego Zoo in 1968. Zoo officials stated that Carol suffered from painful degenerative joint disease which lead to her euthanasia last week.

Degenerative joint disease and chronic foot problems are most often linked to the death of elephants in captivity. Elephants in zoos spend their lives in small enclosures, standing on compacted dirt or concrete. As a result of inadequate enclosures, elephants suffer extremely painful arthritic and dgenerative join disorders, recurrent foot infections and digestive problems. According to numerous elephant experts, these symptoms do not exist in elephants in the wild.

DawnWatch Alert: Pending legislation that endangers almost all animal-friendly legislation 6/11/07

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/12/07:

Another alert regarding the Farm Bill, this time from Last Chance for Animals. Now with new and improved talking points!

From: Last Chance for Animals - campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: Jun 12, 2007 2:32 PM
Subject: Congress to Strip State and Local Animal Welfare Laws! Take Action Now!

Urgent Action Needed! - Don’t Let Congress Undo State and Local Animal Laws!

Congress is attempting to subvert the rights of citizens by prohibiting states and localities from voting against activities concerning public health, safety, and morals!

A provision in the pending Farm Bill would overturn some of the most important animal welfare legislation passed in decades and prevent us from protecting and fighting for the rights of animals across the country!

If passed, this provision would nullify state bans on horse slaughter, bans on gestation crates in Florida and bans on both gestation and veal crates in Arizona and bans on foie gras in California and Chicago.

This is an outrageous power grab that would undermine the democratic process and deny citizens the right to pass state and local laws on issues of humane treatment or food safety.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Reach your federal legislatures by calling the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121

After you make your calls, please follow up with an email to further encourage your legislators to keep this dangerous provision out of the Farm Bill.

Visit www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to contact your legislators.

Sample text below for phone calls and emails.

LCA: Pet Food Recall Update

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Last Chance for Animals - campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: May 4, 2007 5:41 PM
Subject: Pet Food Recall Update

May 4, 2007: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated yesterday that consumers have reported the deaths of as many as 8,500 dogs and cats as a result of tainted pet food. LiveSmart Adult Lamb and Brown Rice was added as the latest companion animal food to the recall list.

According to Los Angeles Times “federal officials traced the initial problem to protein concentrates imported from China that were tainted with melamine and other chemicals…some of the tainted pet foods were sold for use in feed for 6,000 hogs and nearly 3 million chickens destined for human consumption”.

Now is the time…to act, to start making more responsible, informed choices about our food, the food we feed our companion animals and the products we use. There are heathy, safe alternatives!

For you…

With reports of laced feed ending up in the stomachs of animals set for human consumption, one cannot help but stop and think about our food system and the things we are putting in our bodies. As always we encourage you to go Vegetarian or Vegan! Take that step for animals, for the environment and for your health. There is a new free book that may help convince those of you that are not already vegetarian or vegan. For a limited time the book The Real Forbidden Fruit: How Meat Destroys Paradise and How Veganism Can Get it Back, can be downloaded free of charge. Check it out it might just change your life and life of hundreds of animals.

For your companion animals…

Consider what is in your pet food and where it comes from. The pet food industry profits from waste products deemed unfit for human consumption, they use vague ingredient names (i.e. by-products, meals, and digests) and are essentially unregulated for their animal protein sources.

While not all of us have time to prepare meals for our dogs and cats, there are responsible steps you can take to protect your companion animals. Become familiar with pet food ingredients, read labels carefully, and consider making the same compassionate choice you did with your diet, by feeding your companion animal a vegetarian diet. Always remember that making major changes to your companion’s diet (whether it be going vegetarian or changing the type of food) takes time, make the transition slowly and monitor your pet’s behavior, appetite, weight, coat, teeth and gums for any change. For more information about label reading and common pet food ingredients visit the The Dog Food Project.

Keep Updated on the Pet Food Recall

To get up to the minute email alerts about the Pet Food Recall visit the Pet Food Project.

For a complete list of the recalled pet food products and information about the FDA and regulations on pet food production and ingredients visit the FDA website.

LCA: Help Needed ASAP on Spay & Neuter Bill 4/6-10

Saturday, April 7th, 2007

From: Last Chance for Animals - campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: Apr 6, 2007 6:52 PM
Subject: Help Needed ASAP on Spay & Neuter Bill 4/6-10

Help needed this weekend and Monday & Tuesday for a monumental California bill that will require mandatory spay/neuter for dogs and cats. AB 1634 -The California Healthy Pets Act - will make California’s companion animals healthier, communities safer and save taxpayer money. Read on to see how you can help!

Help the Mandatory Spay/Neuter of Dogs and Cats in California

The California Healthy Pets Act (AB 1634) would require the spaying and neutering of most cats and dogs by the time the pet is four months old. It is authored and was introduced by Assemblymember Lloyd Levine.

Every year, over 800,000 pets are abandoned in California. Aggressive stray dogs roam through many neighborhoods, increasing the danger of dog bites and the transmission of rabies. And taxpayers spend $250 million to house abandoned cats and dogs in shelters and then sadly, euthanize (kill) the majority of these pets.

There is a proven approach to solve this problem: mandatory spay/neuter laws. With the wide availability of free and low-cost spay/neuter services, mandatory spay/neuter laws do not pose a financial burden for pet owners. It’s a common sense solution to the growing problem of pet overpopulation.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO:

ASPCA: America, Let’s Crack Down on Animal Fighting!

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

UPDATE, 4/11/07, via Last Chance for Animals:

Senate passes landmark animal legislation; The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act heads to President Bush for signature.

Yesterday, April 10th, the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate. The bill, also approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in a vote of 368 to 39 on March 26, will now go to the President for his signature. Bush is expected to sign it into law.

The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act establishes a felony-level penalty of up to three years of jail time for any interstate or foreign transport of animals for fighting purposes (until now only a misdemeanor) and makes it a crime to move cockfighting weapons in interstate or foreign commerce.

Dogfighting is banned in all 50 states, and is a felony in all but two. Cockfighting is illegal in every state except Louisiana, and is a felony in 33 states.

“The passage of this bill is a tremendous victory for the animals and it will give the authorities the tools they need to prosecute the scum that continue to use and abuse animals for money and entertainment. LCA will continue to investigate and aid in the apprehension of Dogfighting and Cockfighting rings across the country, but this bill will make it just that much easier to put real criminals behind bars!”

- Chris DeRose
Founder and President, Last Chance for Animals

LCA: Mass Recall of Pet Food — Is Yours on the List?

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Via Last Chance for Animals:

Mass Recall of Pet Food — Is Yours on the List?

Menu Foods, a major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands, recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, according to Menu Foods.

The recall covers the company’s “cuts and gravy” style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between December 3 and March 6 throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

For more information and to see the list of the dog and cat food in question, click here. Check back often — the list grows daily.

According to the Associated Press, Menu Foods told the FDA it received the first complaints of kidney failure and deaths among cats and dogs from pet owners on Feb. 20. It began new tests on Feb. 27. During those tests, the company fed its product to 40 to 50 dogs and cats and some seven animals died.

Many companies conduct animals tests to measure the “metabolic energy” of dog and cat food. Undercover investigations show that these test animals suffer severe effects of lack of stimulation, exercise and socialization.

Cut the cruelty out of your pet’s diet! To find out which companies do not conduct these cruel tests on animals, click here.

LCA: Alert your Congressmen about AETA Panel

Monday, March 19th, 2007

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Last Chance for Animals - campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: Mar 19, 2007 5:07 PM
Subject: Alert your Congressmen about AETA Panel

LCA - Stop AETA

Ask Your Congressmen to Attend Important AETA Panel Wed. 3/21

After the passage of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) last November, it became clear that LCA had to make fighting this unconstitutional law a top priority. By partnering with the Equal Justice Alliance (EJA), we are now part of a powerful effort to increase public awareness regarding AETA’s potential infringement of First Amendment rights.

The EJA is also increasing awareness in Congress and has scheduled a panel to talk about the AETA this Wednesday in Washington DC. Representative Kucinich, who was the only representative to speak out against the AETA when it was up for vote, will be speaking at the panel, along with Heidi Boghosian, Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild and Will Potter, an award-winning journalist who testified in opposition to the AETA during the single House hearing.

To motivate congressional members and their staff to attend, please call your senators and representatives to voice your opposition to AETA and ask that they attend this important panel. Although they have already been notified of the panel, your voice will carry more weight since you are their constituent.

No AETA Banner - 234x60

Take Action

Call your senators and representative and voice your opposition to the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Ask that they attend the meeting this Wednesday. See below for sample phone call/email:

“Hello, I am calling as a constituent of (Sen/Rep name) to voice my opposition to the recently passed Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. I would like to invite (Sen/Rep name) to attend a panel on this very important issue on Wednesday, March 21st from 2-3:30pm in Rayburn 2255. Thank you.”
