Michael Vick Admits Guilt - Plea Deal To Be Announced This Monday 8/27

Michael Vick has admitted guilt to the dog fighting charges against him and will accept a plea deal this Monday, August 27th.

LCA urges Judge Henry Hudson to ignore Michael Vick’s celebrity and sentence him based on the most important elements of the case: the seriousness of the crimes and the tortured and dead victims. With 23 years experience investigating dog fighting, LCA served in a consulting capacity during the Vick investigation.

If the facts alleged in the July 17th indictment are true, Vick not only participated in dog fights, but actually staged them on his property, purchased especially for that purpose. The indictment states that as recently as April 2007, Vick personally “executed” eight dogs “by various means including hanging, drowning, and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground.”

LCA President Chris DeRose states, “These are not the type of crimes that one can simply apologize away. Despite legislative attempts to crack down on dog fighting, it flourishes nationwide. Civilized society has decided through the legislature to stop dog fighting, and now it falls upon the judicial branch to enforce the will of the people.”

DeRose goes on to say that even the maximum sentence of five years in prison under the current charges would be a lucky break for Vick: “Vick, or any other dog fight ringleader, would face much longer prison time under either Virginia’s state laws or the new federal dog fighting law which will guide prosecutions from 2007 forward,” DeRose said. “Ironically, Vick got a break by being busted this year instead of in 2008, when the stricter Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007 will apply.”

Please contact Judge Hudson’s office and urge him to impose the maximum fine and the five year prison term! In addition, Vick should serve time educating the public (i.e. school lectures, interviews) on the horrors of dog fighting and animal cruetly. This would not only save the animals but countless youth who emulate and look up to Vick. (See contact info at bottom.)

Audubon & NET: Congress, Energy & Climate Change

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

UPDATE, 7/19/07:

See also: Make sure your Rep. supports the RES and fuel efficiency amendments, from the League of Conservation Voters and Hey Congress: Clean My Ride, Flex My Fuel, via the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

—————————

Today I bring you two enviro alerts for your clicking pleasure:

Audubon: Give Renewable Electricity A Chance

The House will soon debate its version of America’s energy policy. We want to ensure that any energy legislation includes a strong nationwide renewable electricity standard (RES). Twenty-three states already have renewable electricity standards, which require utility companies to generate a certain percentage of electricity from clean, renewable sources like wind and solar. Audubon is committed to advancing these approaches in ways that safeguard birds, other wildlife, and their habitat. Establishing a nationwide renewable electricity standard is one of the biggest steps we can take to reduce global warming pollution. We have the technology to do this right now, but we need Congress to lead the way.

National Environmental Trust (NET): Urge Your Representative to Increase Gas Mileage Standards

Last month the Senate passed groundbreaking legislation to increase fuel efficiency standards for the first time in nearly 30 years. Now the momentum has shifted to the House of Representatives where a similar vote is expected shortly. It’s time to urge House members to follow the Senate’s lead and increase fuel efficiency standards that meet or exceed the mileage targets of the Senate bill.

The bipartisan Senate legislation set a target of raising fuel efficiency to a fleet-wide average of 35 miles per gallon by model year 2020 for cars and lights trucks (SUVs). A proposal by Representatives Ed Markey and Todd Plats seeks similar targets that would help consumers save money at the pump and reduce our country’s dependence on foreign oil.

Tell your House member to support legislation that matches or exceeds the Senate bill and to oppose any legislation, such as a current proposal by Representatives Baron Hill and Lee Terry, which offers considerably lower mileage targets and includes industry loopholes.

LCV: Tell President Bush he can’t have it both ways

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

Via the League of Conservation Voters (photo via me):

Tell President Bush he can’t have it both ways

The Bush administration has made a lot of blunders, but they made a whopper of one this week.

On Thursday, the president made a big show of rolling out what he claims is a plan to address global warming.

At the same time, the top NASA official, Michael Griffin - a man Bush appointed himself! - said this when asked about global warming on National Public Radio:

“I’m not sure it’s fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with.”

SK Bedding - George W. Bush

Excuse me??

It goes without saying that the science on global warming is now clear. Rising sea levels, intensifying storms, increasing risk of forest fires - these are the results of global warming. And global warming is being compounded by human actions.

The consensus of scientists, including NASA scientists, is clear. It is inexcusable that the most important research agency on global warming is headed by someone who denies the science!

Now, after six years of remarkable inertia, President Bush says he’s had a revelation: global warming really is a problem. Then just as quickly, his NASA appointee says he’s not so sure.

Which is it going to be, Mr. President?

Michael Griffin’s statements are unbelievable. Not only did he question whether global warming is a long term concern, he actually suggested that it might be beneficial! At a time when more Americans than ever are looking for strong leadership to help curb global warming, such rhetoric is ignorant, dangerous, and has no place in NASA leadership.

President Bush should be embarrassed. He should take action, to show which side he’s on.

What planet is President Bush on? Tell him to choose, by demanding Griffin’s resignation.

Together, we can turn this snafu into an opportunity. Congress is hard at work on critical clean energy legislation to increase fuel efficiency and renewable energy. The more pressure Bush feels now, the more likely he’ll be to sign those bills when they get to his desk!

LCV: Go Further. Live Safer.

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Via the League of Conservation Voters:

Go Further. Live Safer.

Picture the TV you owned 20 years ago. How about your telephone - had a cord, right? Did you even own a computer?

The technological developments of the past two decades are astounding. Nearly every aspect of life in America has been transformed - except one: New cars and trucks today average fewer miles on a gallon of gas than they did in 1987.

Technology is not the problem. It’s political stalemate. But right now, we can break it, once and for all.

Join us, today, by asking your representative in Congress to co-sponsor the Markey-Platts bill, which would lead us toward a new generation of cars - and a cleaner, cooler planet.

LCV: Tell your Senators to co-sponsor the Sanders-Boxer Global Warming bill!

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

UPDATE, 5/8/07:

See also: Urge Your Senators to Stop Global Warming! from Ms. Magazine (who, not-so-coincidentally, has a special Global Warming issue on the stands right. now. Green feminism - that’s the stuff.)

Via the League of Conservation Voters:

Tell your Senators to co-sponsor the Sanders-Boxer Global Warming bill!

As you know, LCV has been at the forefront of efforts to demand that our leaders come up with real solutions to solve the most critical environmental problem we face - global warming.

Last night at our annual DC dinner with over 500 leading environmental activists, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chair of the Senate Environment Committee, challenged us to step up to an even larger leadership role.

Senators Boxer and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have introduced legislation that would halt global warming - The Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act.

The Sanders-Boxer bill (S. 309) is a comprehensive plan for cutting global warming pollution, which is why it has been endorsed by some of the country’s top environmental and public health organizations, including LCV. If passed, the bill would:

* Gradually reduce U.S. emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by 2050;
* Call for greater reliance on clean, renewable energy sources;
* Establish a “cap and trade” program to help businesses meet pollution reduction goals without suffering economic losses; and
* Promote energy efficiency and reduce emissions from cars.

Every day, more and more people are realizing that global warming cannot be ignored, and that finding a solution will be the defining moment of our time. But the wake-up call needs to be persistent, and it needs to be heard by lawmakers who have the power to pass global warming legislation now.

Click here to ask your Senators to support this important legislation.

LCV: End Big Oil Taxpayer Giveaways

Friday, January 5th, 2007

Via the League of Conservation Voters:

End Big Oil Taxpayer Giveaways

Congress is back, and its first 100 hours are critically important for moving us toward sensible energy solutions. Under Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s leadership, the House will vote on a bill to repeal billions of dollars in Big Oil subsidies and tax breaks. New funds collected would be reinvested in clean, renewable energy.

Sign the petition. Ask your representative to take this step to reduce our dependence on oil, help the environment, create new jobs, and reinvigorate the American economy.

Via True Majority:

Protect our coasts, not oil profits

This week the House is voting on a bill (S. 3711) that would benefit the oil industry by opening up more of our coastal areas to off-shore drilling — starting with Florida.

Tell your Representative to oppose this bill and protect our coasts, not Big Oil’s bottom line.

Find out more about S. 3711 here.

Audubon also has an action alert/sample letter available here.

LCV: New Congress - Act Now on Global Warming and Clean Energy

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Via the League of Conservation Voters:

New Congress - Act Now on Global Warming and Clean Energy

In January, when the new Congress convenes, the environment will have new allies in Washington. And Americans will have the opportunity – finally! – to push for legislation that creates real, lasting, clean energy solutions.

Like you, I’m still riding high from Election Day. But it’s time to turn our attention to the most pressing environmental issues. The new leaders of Congress – Sen. Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi – are developing their agendas even as I write.

Help us make sure that clean energy is at the top of their list!
