New American Dream: Pledge to be a C3 (Mama needs a new backyard!)

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Via New American Dream:

In every month from July through December, New American Dream’s Carbon Conscious Consumer campaign will focus on one easy, habit-forming step Americans can take to help the environment by reducing carbon emissions. For July we’re focusing on eating locally. Did you know that food in the U.S. typically travels more than 1500 miles and generates five to 17 times more carbon emissions than food grown locally?

If you pledge to eat at least one pound of local food each week – and invite your friends to do the same – we’ll show you the positive impact of your action and give you a shot at some great prizes, including a $6000 eco-makeover for your yard!

Click on the logo below to pledge to purchase an lb. of locally-grown food this month (and increase your blegger’s chances of winning a newly revamped backyard to go with her newly purchased first (!) home!- don’t worry, I promise to freecycle all that unwanted foliage):

My weiner dog thanks you.

New American Dream: Junk Mail Opt-Out Registry

Junk Mail Opt-Out Registry

This week’s blizzard wasn’t the only storm to hit the media this week. Thanks to the determined efforts of New Dreamers like you, legislators in nine states have proposed junk mail opt-out registries modeled after Do Not Call. In the last week alone, Washington state senators held hearings in Olympia, Colorado’s NBC, ABC, and CBS affiliates all covered a Do Not Mail press conference in Denver, and Washington, DC’s NBC 4 aired an excellent piece on the growing effort.

Will you email your state legislators in support of a Do Not Mail opt-out registry?

FYI: Be sure to follow the directions when sending your letter! There are separate options for those states that are already considering a Do Not Junk bill (i.e., Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Texas, Washington) and those that are not.

New American Dream: Urge Your Governor to Endorse Junk Mail Awareness Week

Urge Your Governor to Endorse Junk Mail Awareness Week

During the first annual Junk Mail Awareness Week (October 1-7), which coincides with the peak of junk mail season and the third anniversary of the implementation of the federal Do Not Call registry, New American Dream and our partners will draw national attention to tools that give Americans control over their private mail boxes.

Please ask your governor to support this effort by endorsing Junk Mail Awareness Week and helping to inform citizens, legislators, and marketers about ways to improve our quailty of life by reducing unwelcome commercialism and unnecessary waste.

You can also find step-by-step instructions for reducing unwanted or “junk” mail on the New American Dream’s “Declare Your Independence from Junk Mail” page.

New American Dream: Tell Ford not to renege on its hybrid promise

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Via New American Dream:

Tell Bill Ford to stick to his promise to deliver 250,000 efficient hybrids

Last fall thousands of you thanked Bill Ford after we told you about his company’s promise to deliver 250,000 hybrid vehicles by 2010. Of course, we also noted that the proof would be in the pudding. Well, we now regret to report that Ford has changed the menu – and the pudding is nowhere to be found.

Ford has announced a replacement promise to instead deliver flex fuel vehicles that can run on ethanol. This trade is inadequate. While ethanol might well help alleviate our energy problems in the future – just as better designed cities and improved transit options will – the fuel faces significant obstacles and requires new infrastructure that could take years to develop.

Americans also need economically feasible and environmentally sensitive solutions now. The best hybrid car available gets twice as many miles per gallon as the best flex fuel vehicle on the market. If Americans could all fuel up half as often, we’d enjoy huge financial savings, increased national security, and real benefits for our air quality and rapidly warming climate.

Learn more about flex fuel vs. hybrids and then take action!
