PETA promised me “10 Reasons Why [I] Should Go Naked for PETA”

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

…and all I got was this stupid email.

Gazing at her laptop, loldog is not amused. The caption on this deMotivational poster reads, “EMAIL: Taking all the fun out of attacking a real live mailman.” Image via I Has A Hot Dog! (FWIW, I was tempted to use a PETA-themed deMotivational poster, but couldn’t stomach the sexism and speciesism. They are, however, a good example of what PETA’s nude campaigns really accomplish, particularly among the male demographic advertisers so covet.)

Subject: 10 Reasons Why You Should Go Naked for PETA

Dear Friend,

PETA US launched its “Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign with the help of the popular rock band The Go-Go’s in 1991 in order to raise awareness of the millions of animals who are trapped, drowned, beaten and electrocuted for their fur. Since then, thousands of compassionate people have bared their bodies for PETA and its affiliates all over the world to help animals in need.

Now you can speak up for animals by participating in PETA campaigns in your area. Just send us an e-mail and attach your photo and contact details for a chance to take part and help save animals!

Animals always need more lovely ladies and gorgeous guys who can draw attention to our campaigns by dressing up as Lettuce Ladies, Broccoli Boys and Shower Guys/Girls and handing out vegetarian food at public events; by participating in our iconic protests; or by taking part in the many other eyebrow-and consciousness-raising events that we coordinate in order to promote animal rights!

Have a Flickr account? Check out some of the people who have volunteered for PETA’s and PETA’s affiliates’ demonstrations!

Ready to get started? Join the likes of Pamela Anderson, Alicia Silverstone and countless others by e-mailing us today and sending us a photo of yourself with your details. We’ll contact you the next time we need someone in your area to bare some skin to help save animals’ skins.

Please be sure to read our terms of submission before sending us your photo.

Sincerely,

PETA

PETA: Juicy Couture Adopts Fur-Free Policy!

Subject: Juicy Couture Adopts Fur-Free Policy!

PETA has had a cooperative relationship with Liz Claiborne Inc. for many years. Through our work together, the company has made—and continues to make—many great strides to reduce the suffering of animals who are used and abused in the clothing industry.

We would like to share an exciting development that has resulted from our discussions with Liz Claiborne Inc.: Juicy Couture—a high-end clothing company owned by Liz Claiborne Inc.—has now adopted a permanent fur-free policy. While Juicy Couture is still selling some fur items that were stocked before this policy was adopted, it has assured us that no new fur items will be procured and that as soon as the current stock of items has gone, the company will be completely fur-free.

We applaud Liz Claiborne and Juicy Couture for making this move, which will spare animals from suffering all the torment and abuse inherent in fur production.

Unfortunately, some companies continue to sell fur despite the fact that new evidence of horrific cruelty is exposed year after year. PETA Asia-Pacific’s recent undercover investigation in the Shandong region of China, for instance, produced video footage of rabbits who kicked and screamed as they were slaughtered. Another investigation into rabbit fur farms in France showed similar cruelty.

We need you to speak out and let the world know that it is never OK for any company to sell fur. Please let your voice be heard by urging these holdouts to go fur-free once and for all!

Whose Skin Are You In?

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

This video has been making the rounds, but I thought I might post it here anyhow, as an example of a PETA ad campaign that I quite like. It’s brutal, truthful, powerful and moving. It addresses the animal, human and environmental casualties of leather and fur “production.” It does so without pornifying women or men, without relying on ageist or sizeist slurs, and does not single out a particular culture for their use of animal skins. It calls out speciesism without engaging in another “ism” while doing so. It’s evidence that PETA, with all its faults, is a varied organization that can (sometimes!) produce engaging campaigns. After all, a little props when they do get it right would be nice, no? Positive reinforcement, yes?

And yet…I have yet to see “Whose Skin Are You In?” featured on a non-veg*n blog as of this writing. Just, you know, making a note. *shrug*

You can sign the fur-free pledge and order “Fake for the Animals’ Sake” stickers here.

Subject: Skin Ripped Off and Left to Suffocate – Tell Lowe’s No More Glue Traps!

Thank you for participating in the action alert that targets Lowe’s for its sale of cruel glue traps. I’m sure that you received Lowe’s automated response, which stated, “We…have changed our merchandise offering to cut in half the number of glue traps we offer, and only carry the products that contain Eugenol, which is an anesthetic.”

Unfortunately, Eugenol can only act as an anesthetic when injected directly into an animal’s bloodstream or given through a tube into the stomach. Topical application—which is how animals caught in glue traps would come into contact with Eugenol—would not result in any pain relief whatsoever. In fact, it could cause the animals to experience an additional painful burning sensation, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and seizures. These “modified” glue traps are every bit as cruel as standard glue traps.

Please contact Lowe’s at 1-800-445-6937 and let them know that Eugenol does nothing to ease the suffering of animals caught in glue traps. Also ask that they stop selling all glue traps immediately.

Thank you for everything that you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Emily Allen

PETA: Exotic Animals in Missouri Need Your Help!

Subject: Exotic Animals in Missouri Need Your Help!

Two tiger attacks in Missouri this week graphically illustrate the need for new laws. On August 4, a 16-year-old worker at Predator World—an unaccredited zoo in Branson, Mo.—was attacked by three tigers, and the victim is currently in the hospital in critical condition. On August 3, a tiger was shot and killed after the animal attacked a worker at Wesa-A-Geh-Ya, a private menagerie in Warren County, Mo. The victim’s leg had to be amputated.

These are not Missouri’s first tragic incidents involving exotic animals. Previously, a volunteer at Predator World was bitten by a leopard, and three wolves, a grizzly bear, and a fox have escaped from the facility. In 2001, an African lion at Ozark Nature Center in Morgan County escaped and was on the loose for four days. In 1999, a 5-year-old boy in Williamsville was mauled by a neighbor’s “pet” lion.

Potentially dangerous wild animals—such as big cats, bears, wolves, and primates—should not be kept in captivity. These animals pose public health and safety risks, and they suffer immensely when they are kept as “pets” or in poor conditions at unqualified and inexperienced roadside zoos or pseudo-sanctuaries.

PETA: HUGO BOSS to Phase Out Cruel Australian Wool!

Subject: HUGO BOSS to Phase Out Cruel Australian Wool!

Thank you for contacting Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd about cruelty in the Australian wool industry.

We have exciting news to share with you!

Following discussions with PETA—and thanks in large part to activists like you who have helped raise awareness about the mutilation of lambs by Australian farmers—global retail giant HUGO BOSS has announced that it will phase out wool from lambs who have undergone the mulesing mutilation. The company said, “HUGO BOSS disassociates itself from mulesing because it contravenes our corporate values ….”

Please take a few moments to send HUGO BOSS a note of thanks for its willingness to speak up for the millions of sheep who are mutilated each year at the hands of cruel Australian farmers. E-mail HUGO BOSS officials at customerservice [at] hugoboss.com and let them know that you will be telling your friends and family about the company’s compassionate decision.

Thank you for all that you do for animals!

Best regards,

Danielle Katz
Outreach Program Coordinator

Subject: Lowe’s Insists on Selling Cruelty; ‘Modified’ Glue Traps Are Repackaged Torture

In response to your calls and e-mails, Lowe’s has issued a statement claiming that the company will “only carry the products [glue traps] that contain Eugenol [clove oil], which is an anesthetic.” Don’t be fooled! Such “modified” glue traps are a shameless attempt to dupe consumers. They are still glue traps that kill animals slowly through starvation and dehydration. These glue traps show absolutely no evidence of reducing animal suffering. In fact, they cause as much suffering as—if not more than—standard traps.

Please continue to push Lowe’s to stop carrying all glue traps. Please call and fax Lowe’s today and tell the company that caring consumers strongly oppose the use of glue traps and will not patronize Lowe’s until the company removes all glue traps from its stores and issues a statement vowing never to sell them again.

PETA: Dickerson Park Zoo’s Underhanded Activities Exposed!

Subject: Dickerson Park Zoo’s Underhanded Activities Exposed!

Documents received by PETA reveal that in 2007, the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Mo., “donated” a kudu and a kangaroo to Buddy Jordan, a notorious animal dealer who has been featured in numerous media investigative reports. The media investigations have all documented that Jordan sold animals to hunting ranches, operators of exotic-animal auctions, exotic-animal breeders and dealers, unaccredited zoos, and pet owners. The zoo also sold two giraffes to Los Jaboncillos Ranch in Texas and transferred three kangaroos and a wallaby to Dianna Tatum, a licensed animal dealer.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) states that it accredits “only those institutions that have achieved rigorous standards for animal care …” and has a policy that prohibits accredited zoos from sending animals to auctions or hunting ranches. Clearly, the Dickerson Park Zoo fails on all counts.
