RAN: Thank Ford for finally plugging in and ask them to shift into high gear!

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Via Rainforest Action Network:

Thank Ford for finally plugging in and ask them to shift into high gear!

This week, Ford launched a partnership with Southern California Edison to build and test the first generation of road-ready, consumer-class plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Plug-in hybrids could very well be the key to breaking America’s destructive oil addiction by giving consumers a viable alternative to the gas-guzzling cars and trucks currently clogging our roads and polluting our atmosphere.

Until now, automakers have refused to build hybrid cars with a plug, and so if consumers want a plug-in hybrid, they have to buy a regular hybrid and THEN go through the expensive process of having another company convert their hybrid to a plug-in. We applaud Ford’s for stepping ahead of Toyota and GM and actually putting PHEVs on the road.

While you can’t yet walk into your local Ford dealership and buy a plug-in, we are encouraged by what appears to be a sincere effort by Ford and Southern California Edison to chip away at the auto industry’s longstanding relationship with Big Oil.

Let’s get as many people as possible to thank Ford and let them know that the public is clamouring to see plug-in hybrid cars be made available to consumers.

RAN: Tell Nippon Paper, Stop Buying Tasmanian Old Growth!

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Via the Rainforest Action Network:

Tell Nippon Paper, Stop Buying Tasmanian Old Growth!

On one hand, Nippon Paper is the biggest buyer of old growth woodchips from the infamous logging company Gunns. This makes Nippon paper the leading supporter of Gunns’ destruction of Tasmania’s ancient forests.

On the other hand, Nippon has promised its customers that it does not buy wood from old growth or high conservation value forests, and that Gunns’ logging operations meet FSC standards — none of which is true.

If the company would simply stop buying these woodchips it would be a huge step towards the future survival of Tasmania’s magnificent forests. Help us demand that Nippon fulfill its policy pledges and stop buying old growth wood from Gunns.

RAN: Tell Toyota to follow Google’s lead and add plugs to their hybrids!

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Via the Rainforest Action Network:

Tell Toyota to follow Google’s lead and add plugs to their hybrids!

Google has just launched a multi-million dollar investment in plug-in hybrids and technology, but thanks to the foot-dragging of automakers like Toyota, it’s almost impossible for anyone who doesn’t work at Google to get a plug-in car for themselves.
Google plugs in

Automakers have refused to add plugs to their hybrid cars, and so if consumers want a plug-in hybrid, they have to buy a regular hybrid and THEN go through the expensive process of having another company convert their hybrid to a plug-in.

This foot-dragging is especially outrageous because Toyota — supposedly an environmental leader — is one of the main obstacles to the large-scale manufacture of plug-in cars. It’s high time for automakers to hurry up and meet Google in the 21st century by building plug-in hybrids, the best existing solution to gas-powered vehicles.

Let’s get as many people as possible to let Toyota know that the public is demanding plug-in hybrid cars be made available.

RAN: Tell the AAM to stop blocking global warming legislation!

Tell the AAM to stop blocking global warming legislation!

Right now, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is pouring millions of dollars into trying to block groundbreaking global warming legislation by suing states like California, Vermont and Rhode Island.

At a hearing in Sacramento this Wednesday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will decide whether to allow California’s groundbreaking legislation to proceed – a decision that will have consequences for all states seeking to enact similar laws.

This week, we need as many people as possible to write AAM President Dave McCurdy and let him know that thousands upon thousands of car owners and potential car buyers want the AAM to stop sinking money into fighting regulation and start investing in real solutions to global warming. Fill out the form [here] to write the AAM now!

RAN: Get Citi Out of Dirty Coal

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Via Rainforest Action Network:

Get Citi Out of Dirty Coal

As the world calls for immediate action to confront climate change, banks like Citi bank are only making nominal progress. Recently committing to investing $50 billion over 10 years, Citi remains the top financial arranger for the power and oil and natural-gas sectors in 2006, controlling 10 percent of the $272 billion power-lending market and 8.7 percent of the $310 billion oil and natural-gas lending market.

Many banks, including Citi, have been under increasing criticism over their investments in new coal-fired power plants, which emit more greenhouse gases than any other source of electricity. On the heels of stopping 8 of the proposed pulverized coal power plants in Texas by TXU Corp – we now have the momentum to stop coal once and for all. With TXU still planning to build 3 more coal plants (emitting 22 million tons of greenhouse gasses annually), and with another 159 coal plants proposed in the US over the next decade via the Bush Energy Plan – we must hold firm on our demands. No New Coal.

RAN: What’s your Earth Day Resolution?

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

What’s your Earth Day Resolution? Rainforest Action Network wants to know!

Some tips to getcha started:

● Go local – The average meal travels 1,500 miles to get to our plates!

● Grow your own – Get out in your yard and start digging or get together with some neighbors and start a community garden. Now we’re talkin’ really local.

● Go organic – 40 percent of energy used in the food system goes toward the production of artificial, petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides.

● Go veg – Cow manure releases 18 percent of the Earth’s carbon monoxide. Reducing your meat intake even a little bit can help.

● Go car free – The average driver uses two gallons of gas a day; ride your bike or take the bus to go to the store!

● Turn off the lights – Do better than fluorescent bulbs, go for candles this Earth Day. You’ll like the atmosphere. While you’re at it, switch out those old fluorescent bulbs once and for all.

Speaking of going veg, take a moment to check out the PB&J Campaign, which is

working to combat environmental destruction and improve animal welfare by reducing the amount of animal products people eat. The PB&J Campaign approaches positive change one meal at a time by illuminating the differences one single dining decision can make.

Though the site is geared towards animal welfare as opposed to animal rights, if a yummy PB&J sandwich can convince the meat-n-potatoes omni’s out there to opt for a cruelty-free meal…just once, anyway…then that’s just fine by me. Baby steps, people.

RAN: Tell Min. Turnbull to Reject the Gunns Mill

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Via Rainforest Action Network:

Tell Min. Turnbull to Reject the Gunns Mill

The Gunns pulp mill heads to Australia’s federal government after being fast-tracked through the Tasmanian state government, just weeks after Gunns withdrew the pulp mill project from the legal assessment process (the RPDC). Gunns knew their pulp mill would never meet environmental standards and is now seeking to bypass all legal requirements by pushing through legislation that the media recently revealed was written by Gunns lawyers. Don’t let them get away with it!

It’s do or die for the Gunns pulp mill: if Minister Turnbull rejects this scandalous project, it will likely never be approved. If he gives it the green light, the future of Tasmania’s old growth forests will be in serious jeopardy!

Your public comments could help keep Gunns’ nightmare pulp mill from becoming a reality.
