UCS: Urge Congress to Support Cool Cars and Clean Energy

Friday, June 8th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/8/07:

This was one of a slew of climate change action alerts to grace my inbox today. Rather than post ‘em all separately, here are a few more. Enjoy.

Audubon: Renewable Electricity for a Clean Future

The debate on America’s energy policy is expected to hit the floor of the U.S. Senate in the coming weeks, and we need to make sure that any energy legislation includes a strong nationwide renewable electricity standard (RES). Twenty-three states already have renewable electricity standards, which require utility companies to generate a certain percentage of electricity from clean, renewable sources like wind and solar. Establishing a nationwide renewable electricity standard is one of the biggest steps we can take to reduce global warming pollution; we have the technology to do this right now, but we need Congress to lead the way.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Tell the Senate: 15% Clean Energy By 2020!

The Senate is about to begin debating a crucial bill that would require at least 15% of our electricity to come from clean, renewable energy sources like wind and solar by 2020. Increasing our use of renewable energy sources will help slow global warming, create jobs, save consumers money, and increase our energy independence.

Don’t wait - NOW is the time to show your support for a cleaner energy future! Your Senators need to know that you want clean, renewable energy without further delays.

Via the Union of Concerned Scientists:

Urge Congress to Support Cool Cars and Clean Energy

This summer, as millions of Americans are turning on their air conditioners and hitting the highways, the new leadership in Congress has an opportunity to protect our families’ pocketbooks and begin to curb global warming. A package of energy and climate proposals will come before Congress in the next few weeks that could offer significant savings on the cost of gasoline and electricity, as well as reduce America’s global warming pollution. Now is the time to tell Congress that they must reduce our dependence on oil and other polluting fossil fuels by increasing fuel economy, energy efficiency, and our use of clean, renewable energy. Please contact your legislators and urge them to protect American families, help resolve our energy problems, and reduce global warming pollution today.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Protect Yellowstone, Stop the Snowmobiles!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Protect Yellowstone, Stop the Snowmobiles!

The Bush Administration is considering a dangerous plan to triple the current average number of snowmobiles in Yellowstone each day from 250 to 720! More snowmobiles would cause an increase in air pollution, noise, habitat destruction, and disturbances for the park’s wildlife and visitors, alike.

Help stop the snowmobiles to keep Yellowstone’s air clean, its wildlife protected, its visitors happy and its winters serene. Hurry! The public comment period deadline is June 5th.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Prevent Future Hurricane Katrina Mess Ups!

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Julie, SaveOurEnvironment.org - action [at] saveourenvironment.org
Date: May 7, 2007 3:39 PM
Subject: Tell the Senate that Global Warming should not be ignored

No More Hurricane Katrina Messes!

Ask your Senators to help avoid future Hurricane Katrina disasters by voting ‘Yes’ on two important water resources amendments this week.

Contact them now - click here.

We need your help to make sure the Army Corps of Engineers gets its priorities straight with regards to global warming.

The Army Corps’ faulty levees, bad planning, and refusal to heed the warnings of climate scientists led to over a thousand deaths and billions of dollars in damages in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

If we hope to minimize the impact of future natural disasters, the Corps MUST start paying attention to the realities of global warming when managing America’s waterways.

This week, your Senator will be voting on two great amendments to the Water Resources Development Act that will reform the Corps and force it to consider global warming in prioritizing projects.

Contact your Senators today to ask them to make sure the Corps takes the threats posed by global warming into account.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Fight Global Warming for Earth Day 2007

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Fight Global Warming for Earth Day 2007

There’s no time to waste! Unless we address global warming now, it could cause devastating coastal flooding severe wildfires, droughts, and could kill off 50% of Earth’s species.

But two new groundbreaking bills, the Sanders-Boxer Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act (S. 309) and the Waxman Safe Climate Act (HR. 1590) would fight global warming by reducing emissions and promoting energy efficiency through the use of clean, renewable energy sources.

[Please] urge your members of Congress to support these crucial bills and help stop global warming in its tracks.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Polar bears need your help

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Polar bears need your help

Polar bears need our help. There are only 20-25,000 of these majestic bears scattered throughout the Arctic, and rising temperatures and industrial pollution are driving them to the brink of extinction.

But there is hope! In December, officials at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced a proposal to list polar bears as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.

Securing this “threatened” status will provide crucial protections that can help ensure the survival of our polar bears.

Click here to send a message to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service supporting increased protections for polar bears.

The deadline for public comments is Monday, April 9th — please don’t delay!

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Exxon - Pay the victims!

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

UPDATE, 3/28/07:

Here’s a similar alert and sample letter from The Sierra Club.

———————-

ExxonMobil Must Take Responsibility

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Exxon - Pay the victims!

It’s been 18 years since the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and ExxonMobil still has not paid the punitive damages it owes to the victims of the spill.

The oil spill destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of Alaskan fishermen and others, and decimated wildlife.

Instead of paying what it owes, ExxonMobil has dragged more than 30,000 people through 13 years of litigation by appealing every guilty verdict it’s been given since 1994! During this time 6,000 people have died waiting for compensation.

Click here now to send a fax to ExxonMobil’s CEO and Board Chair and tell them to stop appealing the guilty verdicts and pay the damages they owe.

Via Earthjustice:

Oppose Liquid Coal! Our cars should be cleaner, not dirtier!

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), famous for saying, “Global warming is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people,” has proposed a misguided scheme to launch a new industry based on converting coal into transportation fuel.

Liquid coal (or coal-to-liquids) is a global warming nightmare: it produces double the carbon dioxide emissions of conventional gasoline and would be a huge step backward for efforts to combat global warming. Quite simply, liquid coal can turn a hybrid into a Hummer.

In addition to Inhofe’s proposal, there have been other bills introduced that also call for massive subsidies and loan guarantees to launch this dirty coal industry. We must act now to stop them — please take action today!

FYI: A link to a similar action alert was featured in The Sierra Club’s latest edition of Club Currents.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Support Clean Energy; Stop Handouts to Big Oil

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Support Clean Energy; Stop Handouts to Big Oil

Last week the 110th Congress was sworn in on Capitol Hill with new priorities and goals for 2007 and beyond.

The good news is that new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has stated that one of her top agenda items will be to cut the most outrageous taxpayer hand outs to Big Oil passed by the previous Congress. The House will then invest the savings in efficiency and renewable energy.

According to a recent report by Friends of the Earth, “oil and gas companies continue to benefit from billions in handouts courtesy of American taxpayers. Between tax incentives, royalty relief, research and development subsidies, these companies will receive more than $31.6 billion from the federal government over the next five years.”

Please join us in telling Congress that we do not want our tax money lining the pockets of Big Oil any longer. Write your Representative today urging him or her to support clean energy legislation in the first 100 hours of the new Congress.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Don’t Let Exxon Decide Our Energy future!

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org and Exxpose Exxon:

Don’t Let Exxon Decide Our Energy future!

Bush’s Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman has hand-picked former ExxonMobil CEO Lee Raymond to lead an influential study to develop policy solutions to America’s energy crisis. We can’t allow ExxonMobil and Big Oil to decide our energy future!

Now is the time for America to develop new energy solutions. We can’t afford to put our energy future — and the future of our children — in the hands of the oil industry.

Fill out the form below to tell Sec. Bodman to pull the project from Lee Raymond and his oil industry cronies and give it to an independent body NOT tangled up in Big Oil.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Dump This Polluted Pumping Rule!

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Clean water is one of our most important resources. The Clean Water Act was written to ensure that all of the nation’s lakes, rivers, coastal waters, streams, and wetlands are safe for people to drink, swim and fish in, and to provide clean, healthy habitats for fish and wildlife.

All of this depends on keeping the water free of pollution. But now the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - the federal agency charged with keeping the water clean - is proposing a rule that would do just the opposite!

The new EPA rule threatens the health and safety of all of the nation’s lakes, rivers, coastal waters, streams, and wetlands. Click below to join me in urging the EPA to withdraw its proposal for this harmful rule before the August 7th deadline.

The proposed rule would threaten our health and the health of fish and other wildlife by exempting projects that pump polluted water into cleaner water sources from the Clean Water Act. For example, under this new rule, polluted run-off could be pumped from a canal system into a drinking water source without a permit or any restrictions. This kind of activity is currently prohibited by the Clean Water Act. Instead of preventing pollution, the EPA’s new plan would spread it from one body of water to another.

The EPA is only accepting public comments on this dangerous proposal until August 7, so click here to share your two cents on this today!

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Last chance to protect our coasts from drilling

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

The U.S. Senate will vote later this week on a bill to open eight million acres off of Florida’s west coast to offshore drilling. The safety of our oceans, cleanliness of our beaches, and the health and lives of our marine wildlife are in danger!

A few weeks ago we alerted you to a U.S. House bill that would do away with 25 years of crucial coastal protections and potentially allow widespread oil and gas drilling off our shores.

Despite strong and outspoken opposition from thousands of SOE activists like you, the House voted to pass this disastrous bill which was written by Big Oil’s favorite Congressman, Representative Richard Pombo (R-CA).

Now our hopes lie with the Senate, which still has an opportunity to reject Big Oil’s attempt to open our coasts to drilling and to push for real solutions to our energy crisis – solutions that embrace innovative new energy-efficient technologies, cut pollution, and reduce our dependence on oil.

Click here to write your Senators today to demand that they protect our coasts and urge them to work towards a clean energy future!
