UPDATE, 6/8/07:

This was one of a slew of climate change action alerts to grace my inbox today. Rather than post ‘em all separately, here are a few more. Enjoy.

Audubon: Renewable Electricity for a Clean Future

The debate on America’s energy policy is expected to hit the floor of the U.S. Senate in the coming weeks, and we need to make sure that any energy legislation includes a strong nationwide renewable electricity standard (RES). Twenty-three states already have renewable electricity standards, which require utility companies to generate a certain percentage of electricity from clean, renewable sources like wind and solar. Establishing a nationwide renewable electricity standard is one of the biggest steps we can take to reduce global warming pollution; we have the technology to do this right now, but we need Congress to lead the way.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Tell the Senate: 15% Clean Energy By 2020!

The Senate is about to begin debating a crucial bill that would require at least 15% of our electricity to come from clean, renewable energy sources like wind and solar by 2020. Increasing our use of renewable energy sources will help slow global warming, create jobs, save consumers money, and increase our energy independence.

Don’t wait – NOW is the time to show your support for a cleaner energy future! Your Senators need to know that you want clean, renewable energy without further delays.

Urge Congress to Support Cool Cars and Clean Energy

This summer, as millions of Americans are turning on their air conditioners and hitting the highways, the new leadership in Congress has an opportunity to protect our families’ pocketbooks and begin to curb global warming. A package of energy and climate proposals will come before Congress in the next few weeks that could offer significant savings on the cost of gasoline and electricity, as well as reduce America’s global warming pollution. Now is the time to tell Congress that they must reduce our dependence on oil and other polluting fossil fuels by increasing fuel economy, energy efficiency, and our use of clean, renewable energy. Please contact your legislators and urge them to protect American families, help resolve our energy problems, and reduce global warming pollution today.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Protect Yellowstone, Stop the Snowmobiles!

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Protect Yellowstone, Stop the Snowmobiles!

The Bush Administration is considering a dangerous plan to triple the current average number of snowmobiles in Yellowstone each day from 250 to 720! More snowmobiles would cause an increase in air pollution, noise, habitat destruction, and disturbances for the park’s wildlife and visitors, alike.

Help stop the snowmobiles to keep Yellowstone’s air clean, its wildlife protected, its visitors happy and its winters serene. Hurry! The public comment period deadline is June 5th.

Take Action for A New Energy Future

By tapping into renewable energy sources, we can cut global warming pollution, create jobs, save consumers money, and increase our energy independence. But we need your help to put America’s enormous renewable energy potential to use.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Prevent Future Hurricane Katrina Mess Ups!

Subject: Tell the Senate that Global Warming should not be ignored

No More Hurricane Katrina Messes!

Ask your Senators to help avoid future Hurricane Katrina disasters by voting ‘Yes’ on two important water resources amendments this week.

Contact them now – click here.

We need your help to make sure the Army Corps of Engineers gets its priorities straight with regards to global warming.

The Army Corps’ faulty levees, bad planning, and refusal to heed the warnings of climate scientists led to over a thousand deaths and billions of dollars in damages in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

If we hope to minimize the impact of future natural disasters, the Corps MUST start paying attention to the realities of global warming when managing America’s waterways.

This week, your Senator will be voting on two great amendments to the Water Resources Development Act that will reform the Corps and force it to consider global warming in prioritizing projects.

Contact your Senators today to ask them to make sure the Corps takes the threats posed by global warming into account.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Fight Global Warming for Earth Day 2007

Fight Global Warming for Earth Day 2007

There’s no time to waste! Unless we address global warming now, it could cause devastating coastal flooding severe wildfires, droughts, and could kill off 50% of Earth’s species.

But two new groundbreaking bills, the Sanders-Boxer Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act (S. 309) and the Waxman Safe Climate Act (HR. 1590) would fight global warming by reducing emissions and promoting energy efficiency through the use of clean, renewable energy sources.

[Please] urge your members of Congress to support these crucial bills and help stop global warming in its tracks.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Polar bears need your help

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Polar bears need your help

Polar bears need our help. There are only 20-25,000 of these majestic bears scattered throughout the Arctic, and rising temperatures and industrial pollution are driving them to the brink of extinction.

But there is hope! In December, officials at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced a proposal to list polar bears as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.

Securing this “threatened” status will provide crucial protections that can help ensure the survival of our polar bears.

Click here to send a message to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service supporting increased protections for polar bears.

The deadline for public comments is Monday, April 9th — please don’t delay!

Here’s a similar alert and sample letter from The Sierra Club.

ExxonMobil Must Take Responsibility

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Exxon – Pay the victims!

It’s been 18 years since the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and ExxonMobil still has not paid the punitive damages it owes to the victims of the spill.

The oil spill destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of Alaskan fishermen and others, and decimated wildlife.

Instead of paying what it owes, ExxonMobil has dragged more than 30,000 people through 13 years of litigation by appealing every guilty verdict it’s been given since 1994! During this time 6,000 people have died waiting for compensation.

Click here now to send a fax to ExxonMobil’s CEO and Board Chair and tell them to stop appealing the guilty verdicts and pay the damages they owe.

Via Earthjustice:

Oppose Liquid Coal! Our cars should be cleaner, not dirtier!

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), famous for saying, “Global warming is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people,” has proposed a misguided scheme to launch a new industry based on converting coal into transportation fuel.

Liquid coal (or coal-to-liquids) is a global warming nightmare: it produces double the carbon dioxide emissions of conventional gasoline and would be a huge step backward for efforts to combat global warming. Quite simply, liquid coal can turn a hybrid into a Hummer.

In addition to Inhofe’s proposal, there have been other bills introduced that also call for massive subsidies and loan guarantees to launch this dirty coal industry. We must act now to stop them — please take action today!

FYI: A link to a similar action alert was featured in The Sierra Club’s latest edition of Club Currents.
