SaveOurEnvironment.org: Support Clean Energy; Stop Handouts to Big Oil

Support Clean Energy; Stop Handouts to Big Oil

Last week the 110th Congress was sworn in on Capitol Hill with new priorities and goals for 2007 and beyond.

The good news is that new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has stated that one of her top agenda items will be to cut the most outrageous taxpayer hand outs to Big Oil passed by the previous Congress. The House will then invest the savings in efficiency and renewable energy.

According to a recent report by Friends of the Earth, “oil and gas companies continue to benefit from billions in handouts courtesy of American taxpayers. Between tax incentives, royalty relief, research and development subsidies, these companies will receive more than $31.6 billion from the federal government over the next five years.”

Please join us in telling Congress that we do not want our tax money lining the pockets of Big Oil any longer. Write your Representative today urging him or her to support clean energy legislation in the first 100 hours of the new Congress.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Don’t Let Exxon Decide Our Energy future!

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org and Exxpose Exxon:

Don’t Let Exxon Decide Our Energy future!

Bush’s Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman has hand-picked former ExxonMobil CEO Lee Raymond to lead an influential study to develop policy solutions to America’s energy crisis. We can’t allow ExxonMobil and Big Oil to decide our energy future!

Now is the time for America to develop new energy solutions. We can’t afford to put our energy future — and the future of our children — in the hands of the oil industry.

Fill out the form below to tell Sec. Bodman to pull the project from Lee Raymond and his oil industry cronies and give it to an independent body NOT tangled up in Big Oil.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Dump This Polluted Pumping Rule!

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Clean water is one of our most important resources. The Clean Water Act was written to ensure that all of the nation’s lakes, rivers, coastal waters, streams, and wetlands are safe for people to drink, swim and fish in, and to provide clean, healthy habitats for fish and wildlife.

All of this depends on keeping the water free of pollution. But now the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - the federal agency charged with keeping the water clean - is proposing a rule that would do just the opposite!

The new EPA rule threatens the health and safety of all of the nation’s lakes, rivers, coastal waters, streams, and wetlands. Click below to join me in urging the EPA to withdraw its proposal for this harmful rule before the August 7th deadline.

The proposed rule would threaten our health and the health of fish and other wildlife by exempting projects that pump polluted water into cleaner water sources from the Clean Water Act. For example, under this new rule, polluted run-off could be pumped from a canal system into a drinking water source without a permit or any restrictions. This kind of activity is currently prohibited by the Clean Water Act. Instead of preventing pollution, the EPA’s new plan would spread it from one body of water to another.

The EPA is only accepting public comments on this dangerous proposal until August 7, so click here to share your two cents on this today!

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Last chance to protect our coasts from drilling

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

The U.S. Senate will vote later this week on a bill to open eight million acres off of Florida’s west coast to offshore drilling. The safety of our oceans, cleanliness of our beaches, and the health and lives of our marine wildlife are in danger!

A few weeks ago we alerted you to a U.S. House bill that would do away with 25 years of crucial coastal protections and potentially allow widespread oil and gas drilling off our shores.

Despite strong and outspoken opposition from thousands of SOE activists like you, the House voted to pass this disastrous bill which was written by Big Oil’s favorite Congressman, Representative Richard Pombo (R-CA).

Now our hopes lie with the Senate, which still has an opportunity to reject Big Oil’s attempt to open our coasts to drilling and to push for real solutions to our energy crisis – solutions that embrace innovative new energy-efficient technologies, cut pollution, and reduce our dependence on oil.

Click here to write your Senators today to demand that they protect our coasts and urge them to work towards a clean energy future!

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Urge your Senators to put the Army Corps of Engineers on the right track

Friday, July 14th, 2006

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Julie, SaveOurEnvironment.org - action [at] saveourenvironment.org

Subject: Urge your Senators to put the Army Corps of Engineers on the right track

Last year our country watched the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina unfold: the levees of New Orleans burst, the streets flooded, and people were left with no place to go. However, with proper management of our waterways we can help make sure this tragedy never happens again.

One of the government agencies taking the brunt of the blame for the flooding of New Orleans is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corp is in charge of this “management,” but for decades has prioritized water projects based on pork barrel politics rather than the needs of the people and wildlife that depend on healthy waters.

Click here to tell your Senators that it’s time to change the way the Corps of Engineers does business.

Very soon, the Senate is set to vote on the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), which includes two important Corp reform amendments introduced by Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI) and John McCain (R-AZ). These amendments would be a great first step to reforming the Corp of Engineers and would help ensure the mismanagement we all witnessed during Hurricane Katrina never happens again.

Click here to urge your Senators to put the Corp of Engineers on the right track by voting for the Feingold-McCain amendments to the WRDA.

These amendments will help make sure that the Army Corp of Engineers is protecting the people and wildlife that depend on healthy and safe waterways, instead of bowing to political pressure.

Help ensure that we are equipped to prevent the type of devastation that struck New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina—click here to take action now!

Once you’ve written your letter, please forward this message to your friends, family members, and co-workers and ask them to join you in writing to their Senators today!

Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,

Julie Waterman

SaveOurEnvironment.org - Ask your Senators to secure justice for victims of Exxon Valdez oil spill

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Katelyn Sabochik, SaveOurEnvironment.org - action [at] saveourenvironment.org

Subject: Ask your Senators to secure justice for victims of Exxon Valdez oil spill

Action Alert

You probably know that the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, which dumped 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska’s Prince William Sound, was one of the worst environmental tragedies in our nation’s history.

It killed hundreds of thousands of animals and birds, oiled nearly 1,400 miles of beaches in Alaska, and ruined the livelihood of tens of thousands of people. Despite all this, the victims of this spill who actually won their lawsuit against ExxonMobil in 1994 have been waiting twelve years to see their judgment satisfied.

Now, Senators from Alaska and Washington, the two states most affected by the Exxon Valdez oil spill, are taking action to see that justice is finally done. Click here to urge your Senators to join them!

In the twelve years since a federal jury decided that ExxonMobil should have to pay $5 billion in damages to the fishermen and local residents in Alaska that filed suit against them, 10% of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit have died.

ExxonMobil has continued to file appeal after appeal. Furthermore, ExxonMobil has already earned enough through interest by delaying the payment of damages to have offset any financial impact it may eventually face from the verdict. The reason for ExxonMobil’s appeals has always been simply to delay taking responsibility. Enough is enough. It’s high time for ExxonMobil to pay the judgment!

Click here to urge your senators to add their influence to this letter calling on Rex Tillerson and ExxonMobil to pay what they owe to the victims of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Once you’ve contacted your Senators, please forward this message to your friends, family members, and co-workers and ask them to join you in contacting Congress today.

Thank you for your tireless support on this issue,

SaveOurEnvironment.org - Stop skyrocketing gas prices - support fuel efficiency amendment

Monday, June 12th, 2006

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Katelyn Sabochik, SaveOurEnvironment.org - action [at] saveourenvironment [dot] org
Date: Jun 12, 2006 10:58 AM
Subject: Stop skyrocketing gas prices - support fuel efficiency amendment

Action Alert

We may soon have a chance to help lower gas prices, decrease our dependence on oil and fight global warming by raising fuel economy standards.

Representatives Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) and Edward Markey (D-MA) will be proposing an amendment that would require an increase in the fuel economy of both cars and light trucks to 33 miles per gallon by 2016.

Click here to urge your member of Congress to vote for the Boehlert-Markey fuel economy amendment.

The Boehlert-Markey amendment would save an estimated $19 billion in fuel costs and give the average family an additional $495 savings at the pump every year, while taking a significant bite out of global warming pollution and our national dependence on oil.

We need to reduce our reliance on oil to ensure both the health and the safety of future generations. New technology exists today that would make our cars and trucks go much farther on a gallon of gas, a simple solution that would help reduce our dependence on oil. The average car on the road today gets less than 21 mpg–that’s less than the Model T got!

Click here now to send an email to your Representative urging him or her to vote for the Markey-Boehlert fuel economy amendment.

This is the biggest single step we can take to help save money at the gas pump, curb global warming, and cut America’s oil dependence.

Once you’ve contacted your Representative, please forward this message to your friends, family and co-workers and ask them to join you in contacting Congress today.

Thank you again for your support,
