Animal Abuse

Animal Cruelty Law-Private Member’s Bill

Two Liberal colleagues are in a dog fight over two different bills aimed at cracking down on animal cruelty. Senator John Bryden has authored a private member’s bill that would dramatically stiffen penalties for those who abuse animals. But MP Mark Holland is urging his Liberal colleagues to defeat Bryden’s “placebo” bill, arguing that it’s meaningless to impose stiffer fines and jail terms without simultaneously closing loopholes that allow animal abusers to escape conviction. Screen Actors Guild: DUMP American Humane!

American Humane, authorized by the Screen Actors Guild to protect animals in film and television productions, signed off on a cruel wild horse race scene in the filming of Fox Films’ Flicka in which a horse was brutally killed. They justified their approval of the scene by stating that it wasn’t abuse if it wasn’t illegal! When American Humane learned that the Los Angeles Daily News was set to break the story that this was the second horse to die at the hands of Fox in the remake of My Friend Flicka, American Humane actually sent out a press release in the middle of the night to beat the story to the wire services, absolving Fox of any wrongdoing! The animals involved in film, the public, and the members of the Screen Actors Guild deserve better than to have American Humane acting as a public relations arm of the studios! [Read more...]

End Greyhound Racing – the ”Sport” That Kills

Sadly, greyhound racing is not a “sport” about fast dogs, but a state-sanctioned form of gambling ruled by profit. It is inherently cruel to a gentle and ancient breed of dog once favored by nobility. When greyhounds do not run profitably, they are of little use to the racing business. Approximately 20,000+ greyhounds are killed each year in the United States alone. Despite racing industry propaganda, the majority of unwanted greyhounds are not placed as pets – there are simply not enough homes for them all. [Read more...]

The illegal hunting of migratory birds on Zakynthos, Greece

Annually thousands of migrating birds are shot on the Greek island of Zakynthos, for no more than sport! They use the island as a resting stop-over on their long journey North/South and visa versa. Hunters lie in wait for them, and slaughter them indisciminantly. Even endangered species. This practise has to be stopped. Please help us to stop this illegal practise NOW. [Read more...]

Bears, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, raccoons & rabbits are put in 60 acre plus enclosures (15 for rabbits) to be hounded by up to 18 dogs 16 hours a day, every day of their lives until they are insane or dead. Bear cubs & bobcats are kept in small cages for 72 hours so that they can be taken to enclosures to be suspended just above dogs lunging at them – again 16 hours a day every day of their lives. People pay to do this – families go together. Also the “hunters” have devised a rolling cage & want to put all of these species into it to be attacked directly by the dogs. [Read more...]

Tortoise Importation Ban (Pet Trade) – End Their Misery

An estimated 10 million tortoises were shipped into the UK for the pet trade between 1890 and 1984 before the initial ban was introduced. This trade is back! … and tortoises are being imported in substantial numbers. However, DEFRA are failing to prevent this illegal trade and are in fact licensing it. These tortoises go through untold misery and often arrive here with chronic worm infestations and dehydrated, which far too often contributes to their early demise. The Tortoise Protection Group (TPG) is campaigning for a ban on the importation of tortoises for the pet trade. Please help us keep tortoises in their natural environment by signing this petition. STOP THE DEAD END SHELTER

The following citizens of Austin and/or Travis County, Texas, are dissatisfied that our city shelter kills more than 50% of the homeless dogs and cats it shelters each year. Because we believe having an animal shelter that is centrally located and highly accessible is integral to reducing the shelter’s already high kill rate, we oppose the City’s plan to close the downtown shelter and replace it with one at 601 Airport Boulevard near East 7th and 183. We petition the City to either keep the animal shelter at Town Lake or replace it with another shelter at a highly visible central location. [Read more...]

Thank CA Senator for Her Efforts to Protect Domestic Violence Victims and Their Pets

We as a nation learned after the disaster of Hurricane Katrina that people seeking protection need to be able to protect their pets, too. Senator Sheila Kuehl understands how important the human–animal bond is, and has drafted critical legislation in California to include pets in domestic violence protection orders. This legislation is an important step in preventing abusers from using pets to threaten their victims. The ASPCA applauds Senator Kuehl’s foresight in introducing this bill; if passed, California will join the states of Maine, Vermont and New York in leading the charge against domestic violence. Let Senator Kuehl know you appreciate her efforts to protect victims of domestic violence and the animals they love – sign our petition to say thank you! [Read more...]

Expel Animal Torturer from Cornell University

Cornell University is among the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the USA and the world. Alumni of this institution are world leaders in their fields, very productive citiizens and generally good people. Unfortunately, a person who does not fit this profile has slipped through the cracks and been allowed to attend CU, this person is Alexander Atkind. Mr. Atkind was left to care for the pet of an acquaintance. The puppy chewed a wire that belonged to Mr. Atkind, so in return, Mr. Atkind severely beat the dog, leaving a gaping laceration through which the animals skull could be seen. This, however, was not enough for Mr. Atkind. He then proceeded to pour laundry detergent and bleach over the injured puppy, causing permanent eye damage as well as chemical burns to the face, groin, paws and back of the animal. The animal suffered bloody stools from having ingested the bleach trying to clean its wounds. [Read more...]

Graphic photos of the grisly scene can be viewed here. While PETA asked the authorities to open a criminal investigation into this dog’s alleged prolonged suffering and death, it appears that they have failed to do so. End the Seal Hunt by Using Your Buying Power!

Seal hunting is an off-season activity for Canada’s east coast commercial fishermen. Only a small fraction of their incomes come from selling seal skins to the fur industry. Dolphin Massacre in Japan

We are outraged by the annual brutal slaughter of dolphins and whales that takes place in Japan . The images of bloody red water clearly show the world that Japan has little respect for the state of the world’s oceans and for the conservation of the marine resources it claims to support. Many scientific studies show that the oceans are in decline. We must take whatever actions are necessary to stop their over-exploitation and to protect the creatures that live in them. These dolphins do not belong to Japan. The status of the species of dolphins and whales that you kill are either endangered, threatened, or unknown. It is an unthinkable waste that they will likely end up as a meat product or deceptively sold as whale meat, polluted with toxic levels of mercury and cadmium, killing people that eat it. It is tragic and unacceptable that the remaining dolphins that are not killed will end up destined for death in an aquarium, water park, or “swim with dolphins” program. [Read more...]

Delisting Of Wolves In Oregon

There has not been a Confirmed wolf pack in the state of Oregon in over 50 years. So in December of 2005 the Oregon Fish And Wildlife department wrote a management plan which stated wolves would be allowed to cross from Idaho into Oregon, and they would not be removed. Recently on January 29th 2007 it was announced that the Rocky Mountain wolf would be taken off the Endangered Species List. Populations in Idaho and Wyoming had recovered very well so it was logical for them to be removed. However, when the Rocky Mountain wolf was delisted in those states, unfortunately it included Northeastern Oregon. We believe it is wrong for the wolf to not be protected in Oregon, especially when there are no confirmed packs even in the state. Please sign the petition to push the Department Of Fish And Wildlife to relist the wolf in Oregon so they’ll have a fighting chance. [Read more...]

California Healthy Pets Act: AB 1634

On February 23, 2007, California Assembly Member Lloyd E. Levine introduced the California Healthy Pets Act, or AB1634. This important bill comes at a time when pet overpopulation and backyard breeding trends are burdening animal shelters with overwhelming numbers of homeless pets. Addressing the problem of over breeding through the mass euthanasia of adoptable animals is not an acceptable means of controlling the population. This bill would reduce euthanasia rates by mandating all breed mandatory spay and neuter of pets with exceptions for registered animals, service and law enforcement animals, and those with medical concerns. Smithfield Food’s brutality to pigs and environment must stop!

Smithfield’s pigs live by the hundreds or thousands in warehouse-like barns, in rows of wall-to-wall pens. Sows are artificially inseminated and fed and delivered of their piglets in cages so small they cannot turn around. Forty fully grown 250-pound male hogs often occupy a pen the size of a tiny apartment. They trample each other to death. There is no sunlight, straw, fresh air or earth. The floors are slatted to allow excrement to fall into a catchment pit under the pens, but many things besides excrement can wind up in the pits: afterbirths, piglets accidentally crushed by their mothers, old batteries, broken bottles of insecticide, antibiotic syringes, stillborn pigs — anything small enough to fit through the foot-wide pipes that drain the pits. The pipes remain closed until enough sewage accumulates in the pits to create good expulsion pressure; then the pipes are opened and everything bursts out into a large holding pond. [Read more...]

Ban Trophy Hunting in South Africa

Trophy hunting is deemed a ‘sport’. Killing exquisite animals is fun. Taking a life that these hunters have no right to take. Our wildlife heritage belongs to us all and is something we borrow from our children. [Read more...]

Plastic is ubiquitous and non-biodegradable. Plastic is made from nonrenewable petroleum and it’s production creates toxic chemicals and greenhouse gasses. Stop the inhumane treatment of strays

Vrindavan Society in Thane, Maharashtra, is in news for all the wrong reasons – they have murder on their hands. It is a double crime because it was perpetrated on trusting, defenseless and mute victims. About 40 stray dogs in this locality were poisoned to death on February 15-16, 2007. This is repulsive and unacceptable in a society that prides itself as being civilised and having respect for all living beings. It is unfortunate that the so-called educated people living in upper class localities and having access to both information and resources resort to such measures to resolve what appears a ‘menace’ to them. The perpetrators of this crime need to be booked under under Section 148 of the Indian Penal Code and also under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for the crime they have committed, so that such incidents will not recur, and the example will serve as a deterrent to others who may want to resort to violent and inhuman means to eliminate the weak, mute and disadvantaged creatures. Bill C-373 will help against animal neglect/cruelty. Our Current Legislation wording of “wilful neglect” requires proof of a person’s intent. The requirement that a person intended to neglect their animals makes it extremely difficult to lay charges. By signing this petition you are supporting a great cause, a New Bill C-373, for a new Century! [Read more...]

Support Proposal to List Polar Bears As “Threatened”

Send in your public comment to support listing polar bears as a “Threatened” species! Polar bears really need our help: according to government studies in recent months, more and more are starving to death, and more and more of their babies are dying before reaching adulthood. In fact, of polar bears studied between 1990 and last spring, only 25 cubs per 100 females survived. That’s less than half the survival rate of polar bear cubs studied from 1967 to 1989! In the past two years there has been a lot of tough talk on global warming. But our elected leaders have yet to put forth any real or effective solutions. With the new Congress, we have a new opportunity to pass meaningful legislation. And polls have shown a strong majority of Americans – including a majority of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents – favor such a plan. [Read more...]

Saving Lolita

Lolita is an Orca Whale surviving at the Miami Seaquarium. She lives in the smallest and oldest tank built for killer whales and she has been there for nearly 40 years, the past 25 years she has been alone. Her previous mate killed himself 25 years ago, by thrashing his head against the wall of their tiny tank. Lolita is a 20 foot long Orca whale living in an 18 foot deep tank, imagine living inside a bathtub all your life. She has no protection from the hot Miami sun, and other than two performances a day, no exercise. Lolita often spends time in between shows expressing signs of boredom and depression. This petition aims to bring Lolita to a better, more suitable home. [Read more...]

Request an immediate Senate Vote on S. 1915 – The Ban on Horse Slaughter for Human Consumption

We the undersigned request that our U.S. Senators bring S. 1915, aka AHSPA, to a vote before the 109th Senate adjourns. Thousands of people have been working diligently to stop horse slaughter in the United States. American citizens have given their time and money to end this atrocity in our country, and we no longer want our country to be associated with this barbaric and inhumane practice that only benefit very few in the United States and Europe. We ask that S. 1915 immediately be sent to the floor of the Senate for consideration. [Read more...]

The purpose of this petition is to boycott Troy Lee Gentry, Country Western singer (Montgomery Gentry duo), for killing “Cubby” a domesticized black bear in a pre-arranged “canned” killing on November 28th in the bears 3 acre pen attached to a wilderness area. The Slaughter of innocent cats and dogs

South Korea plans to kill cats and dogs to try and prevent the spread of bird flu after an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 virus at a chicken farm last week. “Animal health experts, suggest it is ["a bit of an extreme measure"] since there is NO scientific evidence that suggests that cats or dogs can pass the virus to humans”. South Korea plans to slaughter pigs, all dogs, and cats in the outbreak site in Iksan by Thursday 11/30/06 .Tell South Korea that this is not the right step in the prevention of a Bird Flu outbreak. Environmental Issues

German Ridge

The proposed “German Ridge Restoration Project” would clearcut 355 acres, shelterwood cut 120 acres, and thin 215 acres for a total of 685 acres of logging. The proposed timber sale also authorizes the building of two miles of new roads, the building of two miles of temporary roads, and the reconstruction of nine miles of existing roads. The project further authorizes prescribed burning of 2,170 acres, in one of the most popular recreation areas in the forest, an area known to be used by Indiana bats, and would likely add even more pollution to an area of Indiana that is already a nonattainment area for particulate matter. This is the first project the Forest Service is attempting to implement under the new Hoosier Forest Plan, which is still pending appeal from several environmental groups and individuals. Stop Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey’s Circus, one city at a time!

Circus promoters claim they only use positive reinforcement and rewards to train their animals but in reality elephants don’t stand on top of each other, tigers don’t jump through rings of fire, and bears certainly do not ride bicycles naturally. Whips, chains, electric prods, and bullhooks are circus animal trainers “tools of their trade”. These trainers aim their “tools” directly at the most sensitive parts of the animals body. Encourage International Paper to Fix Our Paper Packaging Problem

Packaging symbolizes the disposable society we have become. More than half of all paper produced in the United States is used in paper packaging. As a result, in the U.S. we generate 300 pounds of packaging waste per person each year and 32% of the entire domestic waste stream consists of containers and packaging. Because the Southern U.S. is the largest paper producing region in the world, and more than half of all paper production goes to paper packaging, our society’s decisions about packaging directly impact Southern forests. Border Fauna in danger of Extinction

On October 26, 2006, Bush signed a bill approving the construction of 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) of new fences on the border with Mexico. This border will affect the migratory routes, water supplies and natural passages of endangered wildlife such as the Jaguar, Black Bear, Bison, Black-tailed Prairie Dog, Desert Pronghorn Antelope, Bighorn Sheep, Mexican Wolf, Puma, as well as several species of Fox, Deer and Wild Cats. In other words, this fence would put these species at even greater risk of extinction. [Read more...]
