Sierra Club Currents - Protecting Kids from Toxic Toys
Volume VI, #60
Tuesday, April 17, 2007

—————————-

Quote of Note:

“What has allowed so many [psychopathic personalities] to rise so high in corporations, and now in government, is that they are so decisive. Unlike normal people, they are never filled with doubts, for the simple reason that they cannot care what happens next. Simply can’t. Do this! Do that! Mobilize the reserves! Privatize the public schools! Attack Iraq! Cut health care! Tap everybody’s telephone! Cut taxes on the rich! Build a trillion-dollar missile shield! F— habeas corpus and the Sierra Club and In These Times, and kiss my ass!”

Kurt Vonnegut
November 11, 1922 — April 11, 2007

—————————-

Table of Contents

(1) Carl Pope to Congress — Take Action: Increase Fuel Economy

(2) Victory: Protecting Kids from Toxic Toys

(3) Water: Nor’easter Floods Basements with Sewage

(4) Take Action: Protect Our Coasts

Also, much like the Rainforest Action Network, the Sierra Club is asking you to submit an Earth Day resolution - this time, in photo form:

IT TAKES 2

Two what, you ask? Scientists say we can curb global warming and its consequences if we take actions to cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050. That’s a do-able 2 percent cut a year for each of the next 40 years. We all need to pitch in — you, me, businesses, government. Send us a photo of what you’re doing to cut your carbon emissions, and we’ll post it here. Check out what other folks are doing. Don’t forget — It Takes 2.

So next time you cook up a nice juicy Boca Burger or order some vegan donuts to go, take a moment to snap a quick photo before (or, even better, while) digging in. Show the “green carni’s” (a contradiction if there ever was one) that the single best thing you can do for the environment is go veg.

SaveOurEnvironment.org: Exxon - Pay the victims!

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

UPDATE, 3/28/07:

Here’s a similar alert and sample letter from The Sierra Club.

———————-

ExxonMobil Must Take Responsibility

Via SaveOurEnvironment.org:

Exxon - Pay the victims!

It’s been 18 years since the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and ExxonMobil still has not paid the punitive damages it owes to the victims of the spill.

The oil spill destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of Alaskan fishermen and others, and decimated wildlife.

Instead of paying what it owes, ExxonMobil has dragged more than 30,000 people through 13 years of litigation by appealing every guilty verdict it’s been given since 1994! During this time 6,000 people have died waiting for compensation.

Click here now to send a fax to ExxonMobil’s CEO and Board Chair and tell them to stop appealing the guilty verdicts and pay the damages they owe.

The Sierra Club: Help Save the Polar Bear

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

Via The Sierra Club:

Help Save the Polar Bear

The Bush administration may not have seen the light — but they have seen the heat from global warming. Earlier this year, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced the Bush Administration’s intention to list the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act, citing global warming and the significant loss of sea ice the bears need for hunting as the principal reason. The Sierra Club supports all efforts to protect the polar bear — including this listing effort, even though designation as an endangered species without bold, comprehensive action on global warming will not be enough to save the animal.

Until our nation decreases its reliance on the polluting energy sources that cause global warming, the polar ice caps will continue to melt away. Some analysts believe the arctic icecap could totally disappear by the year 2050, which would be a catastrophe for polar bears and us.

Let Secretary Kempthorne know today that you support saving the polar bear through a combination of federal protection and responsible energy policy.
