Animals that cyclone survivors depend on need help now

A veterinary team from the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is on stand-by in Thailand awaiting entry authority to cyclone struck Myanmar to assess and then relieve the suffering of thousands of animals that human survivors depend on for food and their livelihoods.

WSPA is receiving daily updates from The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) while preparing its rapid assessment and response team.

Philip Russell MBE, WSPA’s Director of Disaster Management, said: “No one else, Governments, humanitarian NGOs or owners have the resources to care for these animals, most of which are owned by poor impoverished families. If those that survived die, so too will the livelihoods of thousands of people.”

He added that, as WSPA so often finds, when operating in emergencies many families will have or be in the process of selling off their remaining livestock at severely reduced prices to ensure some monetary value for immediate subsistence, mainly because they cannot now keep them alive.

WSPA, supported by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will assess and respond to the needs of animals.

One way of helping to stop the spread of disease is to separate animals into temporary holding pens. Emergency feed will also be needed as it is unlikely that there is any food for surviving livestock in and around camps or spare hay of any type available in Myanmar. Any precious grass that is not ruined by the flood will be owned by individuals and not for sale.

Wet conditions, lowered immune systems, endemic disease such as Foot and Mouth and overcrowded camps create a highly disease prone and contagious environment. WSPA seek to advise government livestock veterinarians on the need for and how to deliver veterinary checks to enable preventative treatment in the form of antibiotics, vaccinations and de-worming.

“WSPA works to align animal welfare and humanitarian agendas to reduce poverty, hunger and disease in humans. Equally, by complimenting humanitarian efforts in this way we increase the number of animals we protect,” said Russell.

I tried searching for animal welfare/rescue groups based in Myanmar, but came up linkless. If anyone out there knows of a local group in need of aid, please let us know in the comments!

Needless suffering of Taiwan’s pigs

WSPA recently released shocking undercover video footage showing incredibly cruel – and illegal – slaughter practices at pig slaughterhouses in Taiwan. The footage was gathered by WSPA member society the Environment and Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST) and depicts horrific cruelty including pigs being slaughtered while fully conscious.

Previous investigations by EAST in 2000 had prompted the Taiwanese government to create Codes of Practice to improve conditions at slaughterhouses. However, when EAST returned in 2006, they found that conditions had once again deteriorated and many slaughterhouses had reverted to using inhumane methods.

WSPA is calling upon the government of Taiwan to enforce their existing laws to protect animals in slaughterhouses. We are also asking supporters to take action by sending letters of protest to the Taiwanese government.

Tell President Bush to end commercial whaling

Many people believe that the whale has been saved but the sad and shocking truth is that the resumption of commercial whaling is closer to becoming a reality today than at any point over the past two decades.

Whales need protecting now as much as they ever did – perhaps even more so in the light of threats such as climate change – but over the past six years, President Bush’s team has failed to fight hard enough for that much needed protection. The United States ‘ once steadfast aim to protect the world’s whales has been replaced by a catalogue of compromises which, left unchecked, will undoubtedly pave the way for a resumption of commercial whaling.

This May, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) will meet on US soil for the first time in nearly two decades. There couldn’t be a better time for the US Administration to show the world that America does not support the resumption of whaling. It is unsustainable, unnecessary and inherently cruel.

Please write to President Bush and ask him to follow the strong examples of President Reagan, the first President Bush and President Clinton. If President Bush acts now, the damage caused by US neglect on this issue in recent years can be reversed. The United States must resume its role as a leader in the fight against commercial whaling.

Dolphin park poised to profit from bloody drive fisheries

An amusement park in the Dominican Republic is trying to import twelve dolphins captured during Japan’s bloody drive fisheries. The Ocean World Adventure Park plans to profit from the suffering of dolphins unless the President of the Dominican Republic can be persuaded to deny this import request.

WSPA is supporting the efforts of the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition to convince President Leonel Fernandez Reyna to denounce Japans’ cruel dolphin hunts by refusing to allow these twelve dolphins to be imported into the Dominican Republic. Through a direct appeal to the President, a press conference and graphic footage of the hunt and capture of these dolphins posted on YouTube.com, WSPA hopes that President Reyna and authorities in the Dominican Republic will be convinced that the welfare of dolphins is more valuable than attracting a few tourist dollars.

The drive fisheries are an annual event in Taiji during which hundreds of dolphins and small whales are rounded up by fishermen and forced into shallow water. Once the dolphins are trapped within the nets, the fishermen use long knives or spear-like devices to kill and butcher the animals. A select few are chosen for the captivity industry to be trained to take part in aquatic shows and swim-with-dolphin programs.

Take Action

WSPA urges its members to write a polite email to President Leonel Fernandez Reyna of the Dominican Republic requesting that he use his authority to deny the import of 12 dolphins captured during Japans’ bloody drive fisheries. Remind him that allowing the import of these dolphins will imply support of Japan’s annual dolphin hunts and provide further incentive to the fishermen in Taiji to continue their hunts.

Take action against farm animal cloning!

Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a draft assessment that moves the nation closer to the widespread sale of meat and dairy products from animal clones and their offspring.

In their assessment, the FDA states that “cloning poses no unique risks to animal health.” Yet scientific evidence has shown that cloned animals suffer from serious abnormalities including birth defects and premature death. Furthermore, many of the higher-productivity animals that are cloned often have other health issues such as leg problems and painful diseases.

WSPA has challenged the FDA’s stand on allowing the sale of meat and dairy products from cloned animals and urge our supporters to join us in speaking out. Please visit WSPA’s website to submit your concerns to the FDA and your government representatives. Please speak out for animals today and give a voice to the thousands of farm animals who cannot speak for themselves.

Animal rescues in Lebanon and India: WSPA funds will allow BETA to move dogs to a new, safer location

Shelter bombed in Lebanon

WSPA has released funds to assist an animal shelter that was partially destroyed by a missile during the conflict in Lebanon. The shelter is run by WSPA member society Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA) and cares for over 200 dogs and cats.

WSPA funding will allow BETA to provide veterinary care and food for the animals and temporarily re-home dogs left without shelter because of the missile strike. WSPA will also continue to support BETA and other member societies working to help animals in Lebanon.

Flooding in India affects animals

WSPA has also provided funding to help animal victims of the recent floods in the east India state of Orissa. Over 20,000 animals were left stranded or in need of veterinary care and food after unexpected heavy rains and landslides led to flash flooding throughout the region.WSPA is supporting its member society the Visakha Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Animals (VSPCA), who has already aided thousands of animals. More funding is needed to reach the animals who are still in need of assistance.
