Keep the Pressure on Guess?

A few weeks ago, API asked supporters to join activists around the world in urging Guess? to go fur free. Please keep the pressure on.

Guess? is a multinational clothing chain headquartered in Los Angeles. With about 800 stores in over 60 countries around the world, Guess?’s influence on the international fur trade is considerable.

The international effort has already had some success with 5 European Guess? Franchise stores vowing not to sell fur in their stores. Urge Guess? headquarters to make their stores fur-free worldwide and to put that commitment in writing.

API recently released in the U.S. an investigation conducted by Animal Portugal, exposing shocking conditions and inhuman treatment of rabbits whose fur is used in the international fur trade. Investigators noted inhumane handling practices, overcrowding, dead, dying and diseased animals, and cruel slaughtering methods. See the investigation report at www.furfreeshopping.com/press?p=1203&more=1.

To find out more and to take action on this alert, go to www.api4animals.org/actionalerts.php?p=1233&more=1

API Drops Amazon.com Link

In light of Amazon.com’s refusal to end the distribution of materials promoting gruesome, and illegal, animal fighting, API has chosen to terminate our relationship with the online company and have since removed the pages from our site. As an animal advocacy organization, we can no longer ethically continue such a partnership.

Ban on Animal Acts in the Greater Capital Region

Animals used in entertainment are often sentenced to a life of sadness, neglect and abuse. This is especially the case for animals used in various circuses. Exotic animals such as elephants seem to receive the most punishment in order for them to perform demeaning stunts that are anything but natural. As of late there is a stream of former employees reporting the heinous acts that go on behind the scenes of the most popular circuses. The perpetrators of these animal acts have continually been reported to authorities and fined for their brutal practices, but continue to make money from this trade. Please join us by trying to put an end to shows where animals are used in an inhumane manner. We would like to start by banning these shows in New York’s capital district. Eight states including New York have already banned animal acts in specific areas, our hope is to keep the trend going. **Please only sign this petition if you live in one of the following counties: Ulster, Dutchess, Hamilton, Montgomery, Fulton, Greene, Columbia, Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Warren or Washington** [Read more...]

API: Speak Out against Rabbit Fur Fashion, Leghold Traps, and more!

Subject: Speak Out against Rabbit Fur Fashion, Leghold Traps, and more!

Spread the Word about the Cruelty of Rabbit Fur Fashion

To further our efforts in educating the public, retailers, and designers about the cruelty of fur fashion, the Animal Protection Institute (API) has now made clips from the recently released rabbit farm investigation conducted by Animal Portugal available online via YouTube.

You can speak out for rabbits and help spread this message by visiting API’s “gofurfree” page on YouTube and viewing, rating, and commenting on these videos.

Fur produced in Portugal is sold around the world. Because much of it is sold as a raw material to China, fur and fur-trimmed garments sold by U.S. stores under the label “Made in China” may have originated on the farms exposed in the investigation.

In the United States no federal laws govern how animals raised for fur should be housed or slaughtered. The absence of federal laws means that industry practices in the United States likely do not vary substantially from those documented in Portugal.

To view the video clips and take action on this alert, go to www.api4animals.org/actionalerts?p=1218&more=1

Speak Out Against Cruel Steel-Jawed Leghold Traps

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) has introduced HR 1691, legislation that would ban the import, export and shipment in interstate commerce of leghold traps in the U.S. as well as fur derived from animals caught using these devices.

H.R. 1691 is designed to end the needless maiming and suffering inflicted on animals through the use of leghold traps. With your help, we can build the momentum needed to get this bill moving in the right direction.

Please call, email, or fax your U.S. Representative and urge him or her to cosponsor H.R. 1691, and to support this legislation when it comes up for a vote this session.

Prevent Cruel and Inhumane Treatment of Rabbits in Fur Fashion

Consumers for a Fur Free Society (CFFS), the Animal Protection Institute’s program to put an end to the use of fur in fashion, is asking retailers to drop all fur from their inventories. Additionally, CFFS is calling for retailers to take a stand against the cruel international fur trade by putting in writing their commitment to no longer sell fur or fur-trimmed items.

Your help is needed to be sure we target all U.S. retailers who are currently selling fur or fur-trimmed items in their stores and catalogs. We also need you to harness your consumer power to let retailers know that profiting from the suffering of animals used in the fur trade is not acceptable. Fur is never in fashion!

API recently released in the U.S. an investigation conducted by Animal Portugal. This investigation exposes shocking conditions and inhumane treatment of rabbits, whose fur is used in the international fur trade. Investigators noted inhumane handling practices, overcrowding, dead, dying and diseased animals, and cruel slaughtering methods.

To learn more and find out how you can partner with us to put an end to an outdated and cruel form of unfashionable “fashion,” go to www.api4animals.org/actionalerts?p=1205&more=1.

Thank you for taking action to keep animals from falling victim to the cruel fur trade!

WWF: Help End the Tiger Trade

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/19/07, via WWF:

In a major victory for conservation, raising captive tigers for trade in their parts was rejected last week by members of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in The Hague.

Parties to the international wildlife convention also urged China to phase out its large-scale commercial tiger farms.

Prior to the decision WWF and other conservation organizations unveiled the massive two-storey-high tiger mosaic, made up of more than 26,000 of your photos, outside the conference centre urging world leaders to end all trade in tigers. Delegates had to walk past the mosaic on their way to the tiger debate.

See a photo slideshow of the mosaic being unveiled at: mail.panda.org/inxmail/url?vmkeq00d4gi0qbfbn3a3

Watch the video: mail.panda.org/inxmail/url?vmoeq00d4gi0qbvi43a3

4 countries with wild tigers – India, Nepal, Russia and Bhutan – were joined by the United States in advocating for a strong decision for tigers. India called on China to phase out the country’s privately run “tiger farms,” which house nearly 5,000 big cats and are pushing the Chinese government to allow legal trade in tiger parts. With leadership from these countries, the 171 member countries of the CITES convention adopted a strong tiger trade decision by consensus.

China has said that it will not lift its ban without listening to scientific opinion from around the world. The world spoke and urged China not to reopen any trade in tiger parts and to increase protection for tigers in the wild.

This is great news!

Thank you to everyone who took action and added their photo to the tiger mosaic. Without your help this would not have been possible!

Via the World Wildlife Fund:

Help End the Tiger Trade

Your snapshot could help save tigers. Add your photo* to the world’s largest photo mosaic of this endangered species and your picture will be included when the mosaic is unveiled to world leaders in June as they gather to discuss trade in endangered species. Upload your photo now.

You can also sign a letter urging China to make its tiger trade ban permanent. Your views will be personally conveyed to China’s leaders.

Despite international and domestic bans, a thriving black market for tiger skins and bones threatens to wipe out wild tigers. China, with its booming economy, burgeoning human population and ancient traditions of using tiger parts as medicine and clothing, is the world’s leading consumer of tiger products.

The good news is that the Chinese government has taken decisive action to help save the species, outlawing the trade of tiger products, increasing enforcement efforts and running public awareness campaigns to curb the demand for tiger products.

But there is a new threat in China that could put every last wild tiger at risk: the increasing population of captive-bred tigers on so-called “tiger farms.” Investors in these businesses are now pressuring the Chinese government to allow them to sell tiger products.

Four Paws: Import prohibition for dog and cat fur (EU)

Friday, April 13th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/20/07, via Four Paws:

European Parliament Votes for Strict Import Ban of Dog and Cat Fur

Milestone for International VIER PFOTEN Campaign

Today, the EU Parliament voted for an import and trading ban of dog and cat fur throughout the European Union. With that, the aim of VIER PFOTEN to get a regulation without a huge loophole for animal cruelty comes closer. The Members of Parliament rejected an exception proposed by the European Commission. Following this suggestion, dog and cat furs would continue to be imported if the furs do not originate from fur farms. “VIER PFOTEN welcomes this vote for animal welfare by the European Parliament”, as Thomas Pietsch, expert on wild animals at VIER PFOTEN, explains. “The deletion of the loophole is a big success for animal welfare, import of pelts from brutally tortured pets will be a thing of the past soon”.

In the context of an online campaign by VIER PFOTEN more than 160.000 e-mails were sent to the EU Ministers of Agriculture within the last ten weeks. Celebrities support the campaign: In Germany, Hannelore Hoger, Juli Zeh, Barbara Rütting and Peter Horton side with animal welfare and demand, together with VIER PFOTEN, to delete the exception clause in the draft regulation. According to a representative opinion poll from April 2007, more than 88,1 percent of the Germans support a strict import ban of dog and cat fur. [to be adjusted nationally]

More than two million dogs and cats give up their lives for fur products every year in Asia. Many animals are specially bred for the fur industry, others are simply caught on the streets. Furs from dogs that often land on the dinner plate in Asian countries could also make their way into international trade. These dogs and cats generally vegetate in tiny wire cages. Brutal methods of killing are the order of the day, with some animals having their fur ripped off their still living bodies.

Hundreds of thousands of these furs make their way into the European Union each year where they are then sold to unsuspecting consumers as trimming on clothes, blankets, decoration articles or toys. Please help us close the European market to these products and stop this cruelty to animals!

There is a proposal for an import and trade prohibition being discussed at the moment in the EU. However, this prohibition is just limited to dog and cat furs that expressly originate from fur farms. The import of furs from other sources will continue to be allowed. For this reason VIER PFOTEN is starting an international campaign today for a loophole-free import prohibition! With your help, we would like to convince the European Parliament and the EU Member States to close the existing “loophole for animal cruelty” and to furthermore campaign for a statutory labelling obligation for all fur products. Our aim: No dog or cat fur to be allowed to make its way into the EU anymore! Time is running out as the final decision of the Council of Ministers is expected to be made on 7 May.

ASPCA: Ban Raccoon Dog Fur and Demand Proper Labeling!

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Via the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals:

Ban Raccoon Dog Fur and Demand Proper Labeling!

The federal Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act, H.R. 891, would require that all apparel containing any quantity of fur is accurately labeled–regardless of the fur’s monetary value–and also ban completely the sale and import of fur from raccoon dogs, members of the dog family native to China killed in large numbers for their fur.

Under current law, products containing quantities of fur valued under $150 can be sold in American stores without accurate labels. Consumers with ethical objections or allergies to fur may think a lack of a label means that they’re buying “faux” fur–but sadly, this is not always true.

Please visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center today, where you can email a letter to your representative urging him or her support and cosponsor the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act. You’ll also find additional information about how this Act will change current labeling laws for the better.

Subject: DawnWatch: People Magazine – “The Fake Fur Scandal” – 4/9/07 edition

The current, April 9, edition of the widely circulated “People” magazine has an article, by Charlotte Triggs, headed, “The Fake Fur Scandal.” (Pg 116.)

The subheading is: “Think your parka’s fur collar is faux? Warning: Many such fashion items actually contain the real thing including dog hair.”

It opens:

“It was while attending Pamela Anderson’s wedding in St. Tropez last summer that Tommy Hilfiger began thinking about banning fur from his clothing line. When the actress introduced Hilfiger to PETA vice president Dan Matthews, the two men talked animal rights. ‘He was responsive and agreed we had a valid point,’ Matthews says.

“That point was driven home in February, when the Humane Society released a report that stunned the fashion industry by alleging products sold as imitation fur are occasionally made from animal fur. In fact, of the 25 garments tested, 8 supposedly faux-fur garments used real fur in some cases from wild raccoon dogs and domestic dogs, including a German shepherd-collie mix.”

HSUS: Support Senate Resolution to End Seal Hunt

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

Support Senate Resolution to End Seal Hunt

The Canadian seal hunt is the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals in the world.

Already, the disappearing ice caused by global warming has devastated seal populations in Canada’s North Atlantic waters. It’s estimated that more than a quarter of the seal pups have died, and the survivors are being targeted by the hunt. That’s because, despite these catastrophic ice conditions, the Canadian government is allowing fishermen to kill 270,000 seals in the 2007 hunt.

Last year, pups between just 12 days and 12 weeks of age made up more than 95 percent of the seals killed—either by clubbing or shooting. An independent team of veterinarians observed a previous seal hunt and concluded that the hunt failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare regulations.

A Senate resolution (S. Res. 118), sponsored by Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Joseph Biden (D-DE), is calling on the Canadian government to end the brutal and senseless seal hunt. Please ask your senators to co-sponsor S. Res. 118. If they are already co-sponsors, please express your thanks.

Animal Abuse

Thank CA Senator for Her Efforts to Protect Domestic Violence Victims and Their Pets

We as a nation learned after the disaster of Hurricane Katrina that people seeking protection need to be able to protect their pets, too. Senator Sheila Kuehl understands how important the human–animal bond is, and has drafted critical legislation in California to include pets in domestic violence protection orders. This legislation is an important step in preventing abusers from using pets to threaten their victims. The ASPCA applauds Senator Kuehl’s foresight in introducing this bill; if passed, California will join the states of Maine, Vermont and New York in leading the charge against domestic violence. Let Senator Kuehl know you appreciate her efforts to protect victims of domestic violence and the animals they love – sign our petition to say thank you! [Read more...]

Expel Animal Torturer from Cornell University

Cornell University is among the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the USA and the world. Alumni of this institution are world leaders in their fields, very productive citiizens and generally good people. Unfortunately, a person who does not fit this profile has slipped through the cracks and been allowed to attend CU, this person is Alexander Atkind. Mr. Atkind was left to care for the pet of an acquaintance. The puppy chewed a wire that belonged to Mr. Atkind, so in return, Mr. Atkind severely beat the dog, leaving a gaping laceration through which the animals skull could be seen. This, however, was not enough for Mr. Atkind. He then proceeded to pour laundry detergent and bleach over the injured puppy, causing permanent eye damage as well as chemical burns to the face, groin, paws and back of the animal. The animal suffered bloody stools from having ingested the bleach trying to clean its wounds. [Read more...]

5 Dogs Found Dead on Their Chains

5 dogs were found dead on chains in a Georgia town. I urge you please to sign this petition and show that whether a policeman or civilian- ALL are under the SAME LAWS. [Read more...]

DOG ROTS IN BACKYARD, PROSECUTE OWNERS

Reportedly tied to a fence post and denied food, water, and shelter for more than a month at a residence allegedly occupied by Eric Miller of Ross Street in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, a dog finally died on March 4, 2007, according to our complainants. Graphic photos of the grisly scene can be viewed here. While PETA asked the authorities to open a criminal investigation into this dog’s alleged prolonged suffering and death, it appears that they have failed to do so. Other than a phone call from Spavinaw’s chief of police to the alleged abusers—during which, he tells us, the suspects spewed myriad excuses—we know of no actions that have been taken to ensure at least a small measure of justice for this dog. End the Seal Hunt by Using Your Buying Power!

Seal hunting is an off-season activity for Canada’s east coast commercial fishermen. Only a small fraction of their incomes come from selling seal skins to the fur industry. The majority of their income is made through seafood products such as snow crab, cod, scallops and shrimp. This financial connection between the commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt means that people all over the world have the power to end the hunt by choosing not to buy seafood products from the hunters. Stop the killing of seals in Canada

This year, by late March, the Canadian seal killers armed with clubs and rifles will go again to the nursery floes of the harp and hood seal, to massacre them in the largest mass slaughter of marine mammals on this planet! In 2003 alone, 350,000 seals where killed in this brutal way and this year and in 2005, each year they will kill 350,000 more to make a total of over a MILLION seals killed within 3 years. Please sign this petition and send it to everyone who cares for the animals in the world to stop this extremely cruel slaughter of innocent seals in Canada. [Read more...]

Dolphin Massacre in Japan

We are outraged by the annual brutal slaughter of dolphins and whales that takes place in Japan . The images of bloody red water clearly show the world that Japan has little respect for the state of the world’s oceans and for the conservation of the marine resources it claims to support. Many scientific studies show that the oceans are in decline. We must take whatever actions are necessary to stop their over-exploitation and to protect the creatures that live in them. These dolphins do not belong to Japan. The status of the species of dolphins and whales that you kill are either endangered, threatened, or unknown. It is an unthinkable waste that they will likely end up as a meat product or deceptively sold as whale meat, polluted with toxic levels of mercury and cadmium, killing people that eat it. It is tragic and unacceptable that the remaining dolphins that are not killed will end up destined for death in an aquarium, water park, or “swim with dolphins” program. [Read more...]

Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED: Request than the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. Save more than 500 cats in Barcelona (Spain)

More than 500 cats live on land where the construction of the high speed train tracks between Madrid and Barcelona will soon begin. They live there because they have been abandoned by their owners. The cats suffer from cold, hunger and mistreatment, and the City Council of Barcelona hasn’t done anything to resolve this problem. Many cats have been killed in the course of earlier public projects in Barcelona, and we want to avoid another massacre. However, the City council of Barcelona has ignored our petition and the local media sarcastically claim that the cats live happily along this route and that are other, more important things for the local council to discuss. The Meriden Humane Society is located in Meriden, CT between the towns of New Haven and Hartford, CT. This no-kill shelter has been instrumental in saving hundreds of animals since its inception. This petition is aimed at the media to express how important a place like the Meriden Humane Society is in any community to save the most homeless pets possible. [Read more...]

Keep Wolves Protected in the Northern Rockies

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list in the Northern Rockies, and the public comment period ends May 9! Delisting Of Wolves In Oregon

There has not been a Confirmed wolf pack in the state of Oregon in over 50 years. So in December of 2005 the Oregon Fish And Wildlife department wrote a management plan which stated wolves would be allowed to cross from Idaho into Oregon, and they would not be removed. Recently on January 29th 2007 it was announced that the Rocky Mountain wolf would be taken off the Endangered Species List. Populations in Idaho and Wyoming had recovered very well so it was logical for them to be removed. However, when the Rocky Mountain wolf was delisted in those states, unfortunately it included Northeastern Oregon. We believe it is wrong for the wolf to not be protected in Oregon, especially when there are no confirmed packs even in the state. Please sign the petition to push the Department Of Fish And Wildlife to relist the wolf in Oregon so they’ll have a fighting chance. [Read more...]

IFAW: 300,000 actions for 300,000 seals

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Via the International Fund for Animal Welfare:

300,000 actions for 300,000 seals

Canada’s annual commercial seal hunt is a cruel and unethical practice that produces a product nobody needs. 98% of the animals killed in the past two years have been baby seals between 2 weeks to 3 months old. And despite the potentially devastating effects of global warming to harp seal breeding grounds, the Canadian government has raised the annual seal hunt quotas to the highest levels in history.

Please urge the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Ambassador to end the cruelty of the seal hunt by completing the letter below and clicking submit. Please add your own comments to make your letter even more effective. After your letter is submitted, you will be prompted to enter your profile into the 300,000 Actions for 300,000 Seals global community.
