Farm Sanctuary News: Meet Clyde and Take Action on Cloning

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Farm Sanctuary - info [at] farmsanctuary.org
Date: Jan 23, 2008 6:43 PM
Subject: Farm Sanctuary News: Meet Clyde and Take Action on Cloning

Neglected Stallion Convalesces At Farm Sanctuary

Trapped inside a dilapidated 20-by-20 feet shed for more than four years, Clyde had nearly lost all hope by the time help reached him. Here, the approximately 20-year-old stallion stood in place on several feet of his own manure—suffering through the pain caused by his severely overgrown and cracked hooves. Isolated from the only other horse—his mother—on the upstate New York property, Clyde was denied much-needed companionship, pasture to graze in, and freedom to engage in even the most basic behaviors. Read more.

FDA Makes “Appallingly Irresponsible” Move to Approve Cloning

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a ruling permitting the use of cloned animals for human food. Farm Sanctuary subsequently issued a public statement denouncing the FDA’s decision and called for a mandatory moratorium on cloned animals and their offspring to be established immediately. We need your help to urge your federal legislators to pass important legislation that would place restrictions on this ethically unsound technology. Please take action today!

Farm Animals Hit Mainstream Media in 2007

In 2007, farm animals hit the mainstream media and Farm Sanctuary played a key role in bringing their issues to the fore, gaining attention to our cause like never before! Last year, we garnered more than 3870 media mentions, representing a seven-fold increase in only three years, educating millions of people about the plight of farm animals. From Maxine and Lucky Lady’s high-profile rescues to Wolfgang Puck’s decision to forgo foie gras, a deeper interest from media led to coverage on CNN, NPR, the Food Network, two cover stories in the LA Times, one cover story in the New York Times on Thanksgiving morning, and four living, breathing sanctuary residents featured above the fold on the front page of the New York Times’ Dining section. Click here to read some of our biggest media stories of the year!

CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS TODAY AND HELP END HORSE SLAUGHTER FOREVER!

Today is the National Call-In Day for Horses! Together, we have closed all U.S. horse slaughter plants. Now we need to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the transport to slaughter of American horses to Mexico and Canada.

It is a new year and a crucial time to make your voices heard. Let’s light up the phones on Capitol Hill to send the message loud and clear that we want a permanent ban on horse slaughter now.

We are tracking the impact of your calls, so click here to let us know you called your legislators.

Unite To Save Horses From Transport To Slaughter In Mexico, Canada

======================

AN HSUS INITIATIVE — BRIEF BACKGROUND

======================

Mark your calendars for January 22, 2008, National Call-In Day for Horses!

The doors on the last remaining U.S. horse slaughter plants have been shuttered. Now, Congress must pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the transport to slaughter of American horses to Mexico and Canada. Even when plants were operating within the U.S., several thousand horses were exported to Mexico and Canada annually. Brutally long trips end in grisly slaughter… The need for federal legislation has never been more urgent than today.

Kinship Circle: ACT NOW To Free Captured Sea Shepherd Crew Members

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

UPDATE, 1/19/08:

Just read on Green Is The New Red that the two captured Sea Shepherd crew members have been released, relatively unharmed.

Here’s Will with the details:

Two anti-whaling activists that have been held hostage by Japanese whalers were released today, after the Australian government intervened. […]

Benjamin Potts, 28, and Giles Lane, 35, were transferred to an Australian vessel, the Oceanic Viking. According to a statement (and the video above), they were roughed up a bit when they boarded but otherwise weren’t harmed.

Gabriel Gonzalez, a spokesman for The Institute of Cetacean Research in Tokyo (the whalers, gotta love the misleading name) told The Telegraph that the two were initially tied up because they might have been carrying bombs or weapons.

“This is a terrorist organisation, let us be clear of that, and if they respond with aggressive tactics, who knows what might happen,” he said.

So let’s get this all straight. Two activists board a ship, with a letter of intent, because the whalers refused to respond to radio communications. Whalers rough them up, tie them up, and then Yasuaki Sasaki, the captain, makes a series of demands, including activists must stop filming the whalers’ activities and not come within 10 nautical miles of the whaling ship.

But the anti-whaling advocates are the terrorists?

Indeed.

About Farm Sanctuary

Photo via JB/John

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. For more information about Farm Sanctuary or our programs, please visit www.farmsanctuary.org or call 607-583-2225.
