Alley Cat Allies: Galveston, TX, Cat Cruelty Case Ends in Mistrial
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007
Update, 10/19/08: Alley Cat Allies have updated their website; all their Galveston materials can now be found here.

Subject: Galveston, TX, Cat Cruelty Case Ends in Mistrial – No Retrial
Galveston, TX, Cruelty Case Won’t Be Retried
A mistrial was declared on Friday, November 16, 2007 in the case of the Galveston, TX, man charged with animal cruelty for shooting and killing a feral cat. The jury was deadlocked after more than eight hours of deliberation over two days, with eight of 12 jurors voting to convict. It is important to note that although the defendant was not found guilty, he was also not found innocent.
Alley Cat Allies responded immediately with a public letter to the Galveston County District Attorney urging him to retry the case.
The District Attorney’s office decided against a retrial. While this decision is disappointing, Texas law has recently been clarified to expressly protect feral cats, and to make it unequivocally clear that anyone who intentionally kills any cat—pet, stray, or feral—will have violated Texas anti-cruelty law.
Please visit our Anti-Cruelty Resource Center regularly as we update it with current events and ways you can join the movement to end cruelty to all cats.

Friends of Animals: Refuge Ecology Protection and Immediate Response Act

Friends of Animals Action Alert
H.R. 767 (also known as Refuge Ecology Protection and Immediate Response Act) is a bill that is “possibly the most sweeping feral animal extermination mandate ever put before congress,” according to Merritt Clifton, the editor of Animal People (the article is printed below). This bill allows the federal government to kill whomever it deems a “harmful, non-native species” within our national wildlife refuge system. As Lee Hall notes, “so many plants and animals, such as humans, can be considered invasive, yet people choose to kill certain species and not others.” The bill unanimously passed the House of Representatives on October 23, 2007, and is currently in committee (Committee on Environment and Public Works; if passed through this committee, The bill unanimously passed the House of Representatives on October 23, 2007, and is currently in committee (Committee on Environment and Public Works; if passed through this committee, the bill will then pass to the Senate for a vote). You may read the bill in its entirety here by entering the title HR 767 under “search”).
What You Can Do
Animal activists must oppose this bill. Please call, write and/or e-mail your senator now. Let them know you oppose this bill, and request that they oppose it as well. If you choose to call your senator’s office, it’s important to be aware that the person on the phone might attempt to put a different spin on the spirit of the bill. Be sure to mention specific concerns—i.e. the fact that feral cats and other animals are, indeed, not protected.
Please act quickly.

Spare the Snap-Trap and Have Mercy on the Mice (Article 3 of 3)
Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007
While I was disassembling my old blog today, it occurred to me that I never crossposted a few articles I wrote about humane methods of “pest” control from there to here. So, here they be…two years late, but still totally in season. With updated links, to boot.
The articles in this particular series include:
1 – How to Tell If There’s a Mouse in Your House
2 – How to Mouse-Proof Your House: A Natural, Humane, and Effective Form of Pest Control
3 – Spare the Snap-Trap and Have Mercy on the Mice: A Guide to “Catch-and-Release” Mouse Traps
Teh fine print: You’re permitted – nay, encouraged! – to reprint these articles elsewhere, as long as all links remain intact and clickable, and the resource box is included at the bottom of the page.

Spare the Snap-Trap and Have Mercy on the Mice: A Guide to “Catch-and-Release” Mouse Traps
By Kelly Garbato
Summer is slowly winding down; the little ones are back in school, and each day brings with it a slightly chillier frost. Just as you’re preparing to hunker down for the winter, your furry neighbors are plotting to invade your home. If you don’t act quickly, your house could quickly be overrun with – mice!
Though you might be tempted to turn to lethal traps at the first sign of company, now’s not the time to resort to toxic or lethal devices, which serve as an attractive “quick fix.” Rather than relying on poisons or lethal traps – neither of which are natural or humane – consider buying “catch-and-release” live traps instead.

How to Mouse-Proof Your House: A Natural, Humane, and Effective Form of Pest Control
By Kelly Garbato
It happens every fall; at the first signs of frost, you start to hear mysterious squeaking and scratching noises emanating from your attic. Within weeks, you find wood shavings beneath the garage door. By November, you have already been forced to throw out three boxes of perfectly good cereal because of the conspicuous teeth marks at the bottom of the bags. Once you find the first pile of droppings, there’s no doubt about it – you have company!
Although it’s oftentimes difficult to rid your home of mice once they’ve taken hold, it can be done. However, there is a better way. The old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is applicable in this case. Rather than trying to round up and kick out Mickey, Minnie, and their offspring, why not just stop them from gaining entry in the first place?
Mouse-proofing your house is easier than it sounds. First you will need to sanitize your environment, and then you must seal it up so that it stays sanitary.

How to Tell If There’s a Mouse in Your House
By Kelly Garbato
You’ve just settled down in bed and are twenty minutes into Letterman when you hear it: a light scratching overhead, accompanied by a squeak here and a squeal there. You assume that it’s the wind making strange noises (after all, it is windy tonight!), or perhaps the house is just settling (you do live in an older home, so it would make sense…). Maybe the sounds are just the result of an overactive imagination. You hope!
Of course, you just can’t get around the obvious conclusion – you have company. Whether it’s a bird, a bat, a squirrel, or an entire family of mice, there’s something up there. Given that you’ve had recurrent rodent problems, the latter option is probably the safest bet.
However, how can you be sure what type of animal you’re dealing with – assuming that you even have unwelcome visitors at all? Before you can evict them, you need to know who “they” are.
Above all else, your first step is to inspect your home for signs of mice. Different problems call for different solutions; if your visitors are actually squirrels instead of mice, you’ll need to develop a different strategy.

IDA Writing Alert: Help protect bears
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007
———- Forwarded message ———-
From: In Defense of Animals – takeaction [at] idausa.org
Date: Sep 27, 2007 3:05 PM
Subject: Writing Alert: Help protect bears
The Boulder Daily Camera published an opinion piece on IDA’s push to require Boulder residents to “bear proof” garbage receptacles after the killing of a bear in Boulder who violated the state’s “two-strikes” policy. The state policy mandates that any bear who has been relocated outside of the city once is killed if he returns. Many Colorado cities have ordinances in place requiring residents and businesses to bear proof garbage receptacles. Please write a letter to the editor of the Daily Camera: openforum [at] dailycamera.com.

Caring for bears
Protecting wildlife worth a little money and inconvenience
Clay Evans, guest editor
Thursday, September 27, 2007
What would you be willing to sacrifice to help prevent the tragic sacrifice of “nuisance” black bears who wander into human-inhabited areas of Boulder County? A little money? Some convenience?
Wildlife advocates from groups as diverse as Sinapu, the Sierra Club and In Defense of Animals are hoping we’ll at least consider a little of both. Following the latest killing of a roaming bear on Sept. 14 in eastern Boulder, they’ve asked the city to enact a law to punish citizens who leave unsecured, bear-attracting garbage cans at the curb.
It’s far too late to pass an ordinance this year, as bears soon will be heading back into the high country for a long winter’s nap. But now is exactly the right time for the city – and Boulder County, for that matter – to start the process of putting put some legal teeth into now-voluntary suggestions that people don’t lure bears into danger with trash, bird feeders and fallen fruit.
You can hardly blame bears for heading to where the living is (relatively) easy, particularly in a dry year when food is scarce. Unfortunately, under the state’s “two strikes” rules, bears caught more than once in town typically are shot and killed.
