BACKGROUND / EDITED FOR LENGTH:

FULL ACCOUNT: Abused Former K-9 Handler’s Dog Is Denied Justice

Kinship Circle - 2008-04-27 - Justice For Hannah 01

Hannah, a 4-year-old German Shepherd was formerly owned by a Tattnall County, GA, K-9 handler. From a very young age, Hannah was used as a breeding machine, confined until her muscles atrophied, starved and neglected. When deemed no longer useful, she was surrendered to an animal control facility in Reidsville, Georgia (about 75 miles southwest of Savannah, in Tattnall County) with orders to euthanize her.

At the time of her surrender, Hannah (known then as Haunna) was in horrific condition. She’d been starved and was severely emaciated at only 41 lbs. Her pads were so wounded that she walked on her haunches. Her fur was rubbed off in many places due to confinement. She was also pregnant and gave birth to three stillborn puppies while at the animal control facility.

On February 7, 2007, Southern Cross German Shepherd Rescue saved Hannah. On her way to a vet, she began to bleed — mostly from giving birth combined with her extremely poor physical condition. A statement from the vet:

Today, I examined Haunna (now Hannah), an approximately 4-year-old GSD. During the examination, it was noted Haunna is severely underweight. On a typical scoring scale, with 3/5 being a normal, healthy weight, Haunna is a low 1/5. This type of body condition is typically only noted in dogs suffering from long-term cancers or long term starvation. No signs of neoplasia (cancer) were noted in Haunna. Haunna had hair loss on her caudal thighs consistent with long term kenneling, skin disease, or both. If you have any questions, or other information I can provide, please don’t hesitate to call.

Sincerely, Will Baldwin, DVM, Cornelia Veterinay Hospital Cornelia, GA * 706 778-6605

Thank you so much for the information posted regarding Jax, my 4 year old Doberman, who was shot and killed by a police officer responding to a false burglary alarm at my home on April 14, 2008. With so many people writing letters, blogging, posting… I only hope that his death brings about change as his life did for myself and everyone who met him.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart in memory of Jax, Patrick

DDB: Dognamic Duo’s 12/12/120 Tour: 12 Days, 12 States, 120 Dogs

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Tammy Grimes, Dogs Deserve Better - tammy [at] dogsdeservebetter.org

The Dognamic Duo’s 12/12/120 Tour: 12 Days, 12 States, 120 Dogs

March 27, Altoona, PA - What if someone wanted to prove that they could drive to any state and in the space of a few hours easily find, photograph, and videotape a minimum of 10 dogs spending their lives at the end of a chain? And what if they decided to test this theory by going on the road on a whirlwind 12 state tour, spending only 1 day per state, including finding the dogs, driving to the next state, securing lodging, possibly speaking, meeting media, and creating videos? And what if at the end of each day they uploaded pictures and videos of their findings in that state on that day for the nation to share in the truth of what is going on in our country’s backyards?

And what if one day two women decided to make all these ‘what ifs’ a reality? The result is The Dognamic Duo’s 12/12/120 Tour.

The brainchild of DDB founder Tammy Grimes, the road tour idea has been festering for over a year; now she and DDB public liaison director Dawn Ashby have decided to put the plan into action under the tour name of The Dognamic Duo’s 12/12/120 Tour!

April 5th Grimes will fly to St. Louis, Missouri, where she will meet up with Ashby. There they will pick up a car, drive into Missouri to a likely location, and commence the 12 state tour bright and early the morning of the 6th.

The intention of the tour and the subsequent pictorial and video footage is to show how prevalent chaining and penning are in the U.S., educate the nation that it is common in all states, and put forth the idea that it is indeed something that must be stopped; that it is not humane and not an acceptable way to house and train Man’s Best Friend. They will be speaking to caretakers of chained and penned dogs, passing out treats, collars and leashes, educational materials and fencing applications, and seeking local help for situations that appear to be illegal, as well as engaging the public through speaking and media alerts.

LCA: Requiem For a Pit Bull

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Last Chance for Animals - campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 8:40 PM
Subject: Message from Chris DeRose - Requiem For a Pit Bull

Requiem for a Pit Bull

“Christina’s Court” will be airing a segment called, “Requiem for a Pit Bull,” that is inspiring and uplifting. The show’s Executive Producer, Peter Brennan, also was the Executive Producer of “A Current Affair” and “Hard Copy,” as well as the Creator of “A Current Affair.” Being the maverick he is, he allowed me to produce and report on dozens of hard core animal rights stories that no one else would touch with a ten foot pole. Peter alone has made strong animal issues in media a common household occurrence on many TV networks and cable stations. Now he has “Christina’s Court” and already he is taking no prisoners by having a show that sets a precedent in how animal cruelty should be dealt with. PLEASE watch the show below, it’s a half hour segment and worth every second of your time. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Chris DeRose
LCA President & Founder

Click here for “Requiem for a Pit Bull”

This case illustrated the divide between pit bull lovers and the people who fear them, right or wrong. The TV court show, “Christina’s Court,” has heard many cases where an ill-trained pit bull has caused injury and tragedy when let run loose. But in this case, the dog was a two-year-old hand raised well trained and much loved member of the family who played with other dogs and had never had a fight. Citing his fear of the dog, the neighbor went to his gun cabinet, took out a .22 caliber weapon and fired five bullets into the young dog. Apparently the reputation of his breed cost him his life.

Maybe there’s a lesson here about tolerance in general. The case is the “Christina’s Court” entry in the 2008 Daytime Emmy Awards. Feel free to forward the link to your friends and associates.

Spay Day USA! (Redux)

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Spay Day USA

As a follow-up to Susan’s post, I just wanted to remind y’all to check out the HSUS’s 14th annual Spay Day USA website at www.spaydayusa.org. You can also find additional info on their main website, here.

And remember, it’s not just non-human animals who breed like rabbits. Yeah, I’m talking about the v-word. Hey, if it’s good enough for Rover, then it’s good enough for Roger. Snip, snip, snip!

Spay Day USA!

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

My name is Susan Daffron and I’m the founder of the National Association of Pet Rescue Professionals (www.naprp.com) and the author of books on caring for adopted dogs and cats called Happy Hound (www.happyhoundbook.com) and Happy Tabby (www.happytabbybook.com).

Spay Day is February 26, this year and I thought I’d share a list of reasons why it’s so important to “fix” your pets because so many myths continue to exist when it comes to spaying and neutering. Here are three facts:

1. Spayed or neutered animals are healthier. Female cats and dogs can’t get uterine or ovarian cancer and the possibility that the animal will get breast cancer is greatly reduced. Neutering reduces roaming and fighting and most animals lose the desire to constantly mark their territory.

2. Spayed or neutered animals live longer. Statistically, animals that have been spayed or neutered live an average of two to three years longer than unsterilized pets.

3. Spaying or neutering saves money. Spaying is a one-time cost that is tiny when compared to the cost of providing care for a mother and a litter (or litters!) of puppies or kittens.

It’s a myth that it’s good to let a pet have “just one litter” of puppies or kittens before you get her spayed. The bottom line is that by letting your pet have that “just one litter” you contribute to the problem of pet overpopulation. Even if you find homes for the puppies or kittens, those critters produce more critters and the problem grows exponentially and quickly. One cat or dog who has babies and whose babies have babies can be responsible for the birth of 50 to 200 kittens or puppies in just one year. The reproductive rate of dogs is 15 times that of humans and the reproductive rate of cats is 30 times that of humans.

Virtually every pet rescue requires that adopted pets be spayed or neutered. These people work tirelessly to save animals every day, so do your part to help them help the animals. Spay and neuter your pets!

LCA: Join us for Pet Theft Awareness Day 2008!

Monday, January 28th, 2008

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Last Chance for Animals - campaigns [at] lcanimal.org
Date: Jan 25, 2008 4:57 PM
Subject: Join us for Pet Theft Awareness Day 2008!

LCA - National Pet Theft Awareness Day, 2001 (Heart)

On February 14th, LCA will observe The 20th Annual National Pet Theft Awareness Day! Each year, LCA educates the public on the dangers of pet theft with the help of individuals and other animal organizations throughout the United States.

An estimated 2 million companion animals are stolen in the United States annually. Unfortunately, most stolen pet cases go unreported, so it is almost impossible to know exact numbers of missing animals, but we do know is that pet theft is a real threat! Stolen pets are sold on the street for top dollar (especially popular breeds), shipped to puppy mills for breeding, sold to animal research labs, trained for dogfights or used as “bait” by dogfighters. It is the responsibility of caretakers to protect their pets from these horrible fates. Visit www.StolenPets.com to learn how you can protect your pet.
