Papi says, “Don’t breed or buy while rescue Chihuahuas die.”

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Seriously. He’s one of those high-falutin’ talking Hollywood Chihuahuas. And he’s a rescue dog, to boot. Kind of blows that “shelter dogs are broken dogs” myth of of the water, no?

Via Best Friends, who notes:

We all know what happens when a new “dog movie” comes out—lots of people decide they must have a dog just like the one in the movie. But what people might not realize is that shelters and groups across the country have plenty of Chihuahuas, for ADOPTION. In fact, Chihuahuas are the 5th most-posted breed of dog for adoption on Petfinder (after Labs, Shepherds, Pit bulls and mixes of those breeds).

Check out our star-studded PSA video (with actors from the movie) that encourages adoption instead of buying.

Watch on the Best Friends website (higher quality)

Watch on YouTube

We wanted to share a poster made by Best Friends that can be easily printed and hung up around your town to let people know that they can rescue a Chihuahua on Petfinder instead of buying one from a pet store, newspaper ad or the Internet. In fact, the star Chihuahua of the movie was rescued from a Moreno Valley shelter, outside of L.A. just days before his “time was up.”

These facilities, most of which are inspected and licensed by the USDA are notorious for their filthy, overcrowded conditions and the unhealthy dogs they produce.

No Kill Advocacy Center: The No Kill Movement Today (A Call for Essays!)

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

—– Original Message —–
From: No Kill Advocacy Center
Sent: Monday, September 01, 2008 5:48 PM
Subject: The No Kill Movement Today

A Call for Essays!

THE NO KILL MOVEMENT TODAY

What has changed for our movement? What have we discovered? What do we still have to accomplish? In other words, where is the No Kill Movement today?

The No Kill Advocacy Center is teaming up with The No Kill Nation in calling for essays about where the movement is today. All entries (subject to conditions below) will receive a free personally signed copy of Redemption, the book which has been called “a passionate advocacy for ending the killing of homeless dogs and cats in shelters.” The most thoughtful essay will receive two free registrations to the No Kill Conference in Washington D.C. (nokillconference.org). Winning entries will be published in The No Kill Advocate.

In September, the book Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and The No Kill Revolution in America celebrated its one year anniversary in release. Redemption is being called “powerful and inspirational,” “ground-breaking,” and “a must read for anyone who cares about animals.” Nominated as the Best Book by the Dog Writers Association of America and winner of a Silver Medal from the Independent Publishers Association, the book shatters the notion that killing animals in U.S. shelters is an act of kindness.

The book has not only helped shift the national debate about killing, but also played a direct role in helping to transform communities. A rescuer in Washington received this from the shelter manager she gave a copy of Redemption:

She just called to say that [she] has read the book and has had a 180 degree turn around. She told [us] that she now sees they have all been brain washed. The book is going to make the rounds of the staff. The personal goal of the manager is no dogs [killed] due to space this year.

After reading Redemption, Porter County (Indiana) commissioners and advocates succeeded in getting the 20-year shelter director of the county’s animal control shelter in Valparaiso and almost all of the staff removed from their positions. What was once a shelter that killed the vast majority of dogs and cats, sold live animals to a research facility on the side, and even cruelly killed the animals has been No Kill since a new team took over. During a recent visit, dogs were playing outside, were being walked by volunteers, kittens were being bottle fed, adopters were coming through the shelter in droves, the place was clean, and the animals had enrichment items to play with and soft blankets to sleep on.

As Redemption celebrates its first anniversary, Tompkins County enters its seventh No Kill year, Charlottesville enters its third, and new communities like those in Reno, NV and Valparaiso, IN enter the No Kill club. Other communities—in Montana, Michigan, and elsewhere—have also embraced No Kill, and many others are aggressively moving in that direction. No Kill is on the agenda of local governments nationwide as advocates in communities as diverse as King County (Seattle), WA and Indianapolis, IN are using Redemption and the model it advocates to force changes in the practices of local shelters.

In honor of the one year Anniversary, the author has donated copies of Redemption to The No Kill Nation to give away. And we are joining in by offering two free registrations to the No Kill Conference in Washington D.C.

The No Kill Nation is sponsoring a call for essays/blogs entitled “The No Kill Movement Today”: What has changed for our movement? What have we discovered? What do we still have to accomplish? In other words, where is the No Kill movement today?

All submissions (of at least one page) received by October 1, 2008 will receive a free personally autographed signed copy of Redemption (while supplies last). The most thoughtful essay will receive two free registrations to the No Kill Conference in Washington D.C. (nokillconference.org).

PETA: Exotic Animals in Missouri Need Your Help!

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: PETA – newsmanager [at] peta.org
Date: Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:07 AM
Subject: Exotic Animals in Missouri Need Your Help!

null

Two tiger attacks in Missouri this week graphically illustrate the need for new laws. On August 4, a 16-year-old worker at Predator World—an unaccredited zoo in Branson, Mo.—was attacked by three tigers, and the victim is currently in the hospital in critical condition. On August 3, a tiger was shot and killed after the animal attacked a worker at Wesa-A-Geh-Ya, a private menagerie in Warren County, Mo. The victim’s leg had to be amputated.

These are not Missouri’s first tragic incidents involving exotic animals. Previously, a volunteer at Predator World was bitten by a leopard, and three wolves, a grizzly bear, and a fox have escaped from the facility. In 2001, an African lion at Ozark Nature Center in Morgan County escaped and was on the loose for four days. In 1999, a 5-year-old boy in Williamsville was mauled by a neighbor’s “pet” lion.

Potentially dangerous wild animals—such as big cats, bears, wolves, and primates—should not be kept in captivity. These animals pose public health and safety risks, and they suffer immensely when they are kept as “pets” or in poor conditions at unqualified and inexperienced roadside zoos or pseudo-sanctuaries.

Welcome to the Anti-Fur Society’s first newsletter for the Chinese Animals Group!

THE ANIMALS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

China’s earthquake aftermath has taken the lives of a staggering number of people, estimated to be over 65,000 and over 12 million animals have perished. Countless dogs and cats are homeless, injured, and starving to death. Drinking water is polluted and there is a critical need for water pumps to provide water to animals. Reportedly, there are some 30,000 pet dogs in one province alone. Many of them now homeless. Since the dog cull has been in effect, it is questionable if the government will allow rescue to happen. Nevertheless, rescuers and volunteers are doing all they can to save as many animals as possible or at least offer them some relief amidst so much suffering. There is a desperate need for food for companion animals, and livestock feed, not to mention vaccines and other medication.

Various international agencies are helping in the disaster areas, including Chinese animal organizations which are greatly underfunded. When rescues are over, Chinese animal groups will have to continue helping the animals rescued as a result of this tragedy.

Our group has been working with several groups of animal caring people in Beijing and Shanghai. They dedicate their spare time and whatever little money they have to save abandoned animals. It is based on their recommendation that we are pleased to list here three Chinese animal organizations who are animal caring pioneers, and are also at the front helping earthquake victims. It is in great part, thanks to them, that animals in their areas have experienced care and compassion.

Check them out on “WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP” box.

CHECK US OUT!

If you decide to take action on issue #6, “Stop Korea From Legalizing Dog Meat”, please edit out the third paragraph in the sample letter. In particular, I take objection to the following sentence: “South Korea does not want to be seen by modern nations as a culture that is backward, barbaric or uncivilized…” Eating dog meat is no more uncivilized than eating cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, lamb, etc. All are sentient beings capable of feeling joy, sorrow and pain. However, to vilify an entire culture for eating an animal we regard as special is inherently racist; in the United States, we treat “food” animals no better. The push should be towards a vegetarian (or, better yet, vegan!) diet for all, not towards outlawing specific species of meat that we find objectionable due to cultural reasons.

And do I really need to explain how offensive the “modern nations” remark is?

FULL ACCOUNT: Abused Former K-9 Handler’s Dog Is Denied Justice

Kinship Circle - 2008-04-27 - Justice For Hannah 01

Hannah, a 4-year-old German Shepherd was formerly owned by a Tattnall County, GA, K-9 handler. From a very young age, Hannah was used as a breeding machine, confined until her muscles atrophied, starved and neglected. When deemed no longer useful, she was surrendered to an animal control facility in Reidsville, Georgia (about 75 miles southwest of Savannah, in Tattnall County) with orders to euthanize her.

At the time of her surrender, Hannah (known then as Haunna) was in horrific condition. She’d been starved and was severely emaciated at only 41 lbs. Her pads were so wounded that she walked on her haunches. Her fur was rubbed off in many places due to confinement. She was also pregnant and gave birth to three stillborn puppies while at the animal control facility.

On February 7, 2007, Southern Cross German Shepherd Rescue saved Hannah. On her way to a vet, she began to bleed — mostly from giving birth combined with her extremely poor physical condition. A statement from the vet:

Today, I examined Haunna (now Hannah), an approximately 4-year-old GSD. During the examination, it was noted Haunna is severely underweight. On a typical scoring scale, with 3/5 being a normal, healthy weight, Haunna is a low 1/5. This type of body condition is typically only noted in dogs suffering from long-term cancers or long term starvation. No signs of neoplasia (cancer) were noted in Haunna. Haunna had hair loss on her caudal thighs consistent with long term kenneling, skin disease, or both. If you have any questions, or other information I can provide, please don’t hesitate to call.

The Dognamic Duo’s 12/12/120 Tour: 12 Days, 12 States, 120 Dogs

March 27, Altoona, PA – What if someone wanted to prove that they could drive to any state and in the space of a few hours easily find, photograph, and videotape a minimum of 10 dogs spending their lives at the end of a chain? And what if they decided to test this theory by going on the road on a whirlwind 12 state tour, spending only 1 day per state, including finding the dogs, driving to the next state, securing lodging, possibly speaking, meeting media, and creating videos? And what if at the end of each day they uploaded pictures and videos of their findings in that state on that day for the nation to share in the truth of what is going on in our country’s backyards?

And what if one day two women decided to make all these ‘what ifs’ a reality? The result is The Dognamic Duo’s 12/12/120 Tour.

The brainchild of DDB founder Tammy Grimes, the road tour idea has been festering for over a year; now she and DDB public liaison director Dawn Ashby have decided to put the plan into action under the tour name of The Dognamic Duo’s 12/12/120 Tour!

April 5th Grimes will fly to St. Louis, Missouri, where she will meet up with Ashby. There they will pick up a car, drive into Missouri to a likely location, and commence the 12 state tour bright and early the morning of the 6th.

The intention of the tour and the subsequent pictorial and video footage is to show how prevalent chaining and penning are in the U.S., educate the nation that it is common in all states, and put forth the idea that it is indeed something that must be stopped; that it is not humane and not an acceptable way to house and train Man’s Best Friend. They will be speaking to caretakers of chained and penned dogs, passing out treats, collars and leashes, educational materials and fencing applications, and seeking local help for situations that appear to be illegal, as well as engaging the public through speaking and media alerts.
