Kinship Circle: May Digest, Parts 1 & 2

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

If you decide to take action on issue #6, “Stop Korea From Legalizing Dog Meat”, please edit out the third paragraph in the sample letter. In particular, I take objection to the following sentence: “South Korea does not want to be seen by modern nations as a culture that is backward, barbaric or uncivilized…” Eating dog meat is no more uncivilized than eating cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, lamb, etc. All are sentient beings capable of feeling joy, sorrow and pain. However, to vilify an entire culture for eating an animal we regard as special is inherently racist; in the United States, we treat “food” animals no better. The push should be towards a vegetarian (or, better yet, vegan!) diet for all, not towards outlawing specific species of meat that we find objectionable due to cultural reasons.

And do I really need to explain how offensive the “modern nations” remark is?

World Week for Animals in Laboratories is Here!

Call-In Days: Urge NIH to End Cruel Animal Experiments

Many people find this hard to believe, but the U.S. government continues to sink millions of dollars each year into funding cruel and outdated experiments on animals to test the effects of nicotine and tobacco. Please join IDA during this week’s observance of World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) to call attention to this outrage and speak out in opposition.

IDA’s Up in Smoke campaign highlights the futility and inhumanity of nicotine experiments on newborn and pregnant animals. These are some examples:

– Since 1992, Elliot Spindel at Oregon Health and Science University delivers steady doses of nicotine to pregnant monkeys through pumps implanted into their backs. The babies are cut out of their mothers’ wombs in order to dissect their lungs.

– At Texas A&M University, Ursula Winzer-Serhan forces baby rats to consume nicotine mixed with baby formula at the equivalent of three packs of cigarettes a day. After about a week of being fed nicotine, the babies’ heads are cut off and their brains are dissected.

– Researcher Kent Pinkerton at University of California, Davis, subjects pregnant rhesus monkeys to smoking chambers where they are forced to inhale cigarette smoke for six hours each day, five days a week. When the infants are ten weeks old, they are killed by lethal injection and their lungs are dissected for analysis.

Over the past five years, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has given at least $16.5 million to this category of research. This appalling figure does not reflect the total cost of all nicotine research on animals, but only that which focuses on nicotine’s effect on fetal and newborn development.

World Week for Animals in Laboratories

Make plans to get active during WWAIL: April 20 – 26

Please join IDA to make this year’s World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL), April 20 – 26, the most compelling and effective year yet in speaking out against the abhorrent use of animals in testing and research.

Although millions of animals still continue to suffer and die in laboratories, there is cause to be hopeful that real change is on the horizon.

A Landmark Agreement

In February, 2008, three U.S. government agencies, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), signed a five-year agreement to create innovative and animal-free methods to evaluate the safety of drugs and chemicals with the goal of phasing out animal tests entirely.

The NRC’s Groundbreaking Report

In July, 2007, the prestigious National Research Council (NRC) issued a report, “Toxicology for the 21st Century,” which outlines a new approach that would rely less on animal studies and focus instead upon in vitro methods. According to the report, “Over time, the need for traditional animal testing could be greatly reduced, and possibly even eliminated someday.”

Broad and sweeping changes are slowly being realized for animals in labs. Yet millions still remain captive in cages, subject to intolerable cruelty. They will not live to see the day that these changes come about, which is why we urgently need you to join forces with IDA and other animal-protection organizations to vigorously work for such a transformation to happen as soon as possible. While there is reason to celebrate, there are still far too many scientists who adhere to obsolete, imprecise, and heartless animal experiments.

Never-Ending Nicotine Experiments

It may be unfathomable, but in 2008, many animals still die in cruel, archaic, and useless nicotine experiments to tests tobacco’s deleterious effects on the body. That’s why IDA has developed our Up in Smoke campaign, which targets experiments that force pregnant and newborn animals to be pumped full of nicotine. This is just one example of the kind of horrendous animal experiments that we need to stop. Sadly, there are many such vile experiments occurring daily in laboratories.

Kinship Circle: ACT/ End Pig Labs At John Hopkins Medical School

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

You know, I just started reading The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history by John Barry (2005) – in no small part because the 1918 pandemic is heavily discussed in Michael Greger’s Bird Flu, which I highly recommend – and really found it quite ironical that John Hopkins was, at the turn of the century, considered the pioneer of secular, reason-based science. Now they’re one of the last holdouts on animal testing. Innovative, not so much.

They’re now working with NYU to get them transferred to a sanctuary instead.

Last month, a whistleblower contacted PETA about six monkeys who were about to be retired to a sanctuary from City University of New York’s Lehman College — but instead were sold to New York University for invasive neurological experiments…”

TODAY TOMSK AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY SIGNS AGREEMENT TO END THE DISSECTION OF ANIMALS

Press release, 17 March 2008

On 17 March 2008 the International Network for Humane Education (InterNICHE) and the Department of Ecology, Health & Safety and Hunting Management of the Faculty of Zoology at Tomsk Agricultural Institute sign a formal agreement to end the use of animals for dissection.

According to the agreement, InterNICHE and VITA will supply the department with computer hardware and zoology software. The project will save hundreds of shrews, voles, lizards, frogs, crabs and other animals every year, as well as over forty species of insect.

Tomsk Agriculture Institute has become the sixth Russian higher education institute to sign an agreement with InterNICHE to end such use of animals in teaching.

“The computer programs demonstrating professionally performed dissections will allow students to acquire all the necessary theoretical knowledge,” said InterNICHE Co-ordinator Nick Jukes, “And students can learn practical skills by dissecting ethically sourced animal cadavers, that is, animals who died of natural causes or were euthanised for medical reasons.”

“We want to modernise our teaching and for that reason we accepted the InterNICHE and VITA proposal to introduce new, humane teaching techniques in zoology,” said Dr. Elena Kleptsyna, head of the department. “Our students will gain the skills required using methods now accepted in most western higher education institutes, where the majority experiments on animals have been replaced by humane alternatives.”

“We hope that this project will encourage respect for the lives of others – one of the professional skills so important for these future specialists,” declared Elena Maroueva, InterNICHE National Contact for Russia and VITA Director. “There is no doubt that experiments on animals can have a crippling effect on students’ emotions and could lead to a heartless attitude towards people, animals and nature.”

The project was made possible thanks to a gift from the late Director of the Centre for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, T. N. Pavlova, and donations from supporters of VITA and other organisations.

According to an USA Today article released last week a new program announced by a coalition of three government agencies – the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Toxicology Program and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – could lead to the end of animal testing to evaluate the safety for humans of new chemicals and drugs.

These agencies have signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” to develop and implement the new methods. Historically, toxicity has been identified by injecting chemicals into animals and seeing whether they were harmed. According to the director of the NIH’s National Genome Research Institute, Francis Collins, “It was expensive, time-consuming, used animals in large numbers, and it didn’t always work.”

The agencies acknowledge that full implementation of the shift in toxicity testing could take years because it will require scientific validation of the new approaches.

The new systems the agencies hope to use rely on human cells grown in test tubes and computer-driven testing machines. They allow the scientists to examine potentially toxic compounds in the lab rather than injecting them into animals.

All the data produced will be put into a public database.

Subject: BUAV strikes another legal blow to Government attempts to cover-up animal experiments…

In a landmark ruling on Wednesday, the Information Tribunal paved the way for much of the secrecy surrounding animal experiments in this country to be swept away.

The Tribunal ruled that the Government’s interpretation of what information about animal experiments should be withheld as confidential was too restrictive and legally wrong. This a major victory in the BUAV’s (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) long campaign to get the Government to be more open and transparent about the animal experiments it licenses in the UK to allow proper and informed public debate

LCA - National Pet Theft Awareness Day, 2001 (Heart)

On February 14th, LCA will observe The 20th Annual National Pet Theft Awareness Day! Each year, LCA educates the public on the dangers of pet theft with the help of individuals and other animal organizations throughout the United States.

An estimated 2 million companion animals are stolen in the United States annually. Unfortunately, most stolen pet cases go unreported, so it is almost impossible to know exact numbers of missing animals, but we do know is that pet theft is a real threat! Stolen pets are sold on the street for top dollar (especially popular breeds), shipped to puppy mills for breeding, sold to animal research labs, trained for dogfights or used as “bait” by dogfighters. It is the responsibility of caretakers to protect their pets from these horrible fates. Visit http://www.StolenPets.com to learn how you can protect your pet.

Do you want to get involved and spread the word about Pet Theft?
