Make Your Plans for Taking Action for Animals 2007

Taking Action for Animals 2007, the leading national conference of the animal advocacy movement, will kick off in Washington, DC on July 28. The conference will last for three days, including a special lobbying day on Capitol Hill, and will bring activists — both new and seasoned — together with movement leaders and other experts from across the country.

Taking Action for Animals is designed to motivate, inspire, and teach advocates how to be a voice for animals. This year’s conference will have a special focus on taking action for farmed animals. It will also cover other timely animal issues such as the pet food recall, and is filled with sessions and training workshops — including hands-on training in lobbying, media relations, advocacy campaigns, and much more.

The conference’s downtown Washington, DC location offers attendees a unique opportunity to network with animal welfare leaders and hundreds of grassroots activists, lobby in the heart of the U.S. government, and also view the historic sites of our nation’s capital. Additionally, an array of restaurants, shops, other attractions, and public transportation are all just moments away.

The Animal Protection Institute is a co-sponsor of this year’s event, and is one of the founding organizations of the Taking Action for Animals conferences.

Chicago Update: Lawsuit Rejected; Repeal Ordinance Introduced

On Tuesday, June 12, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Illinois Restaurant Association (IRA) to overturn Chicago’s foie gras ban. U.S. District Judge Blanche Manning summed up her 26-page ruling by stating, “Chicago’s ban of foie gras sales in restaurants does not exceed the City’s home rule powers or violate the dormant Commerce Clause. Thus, the Ordinance does not violate the Illinois or United States Constitutions.” Read more.

Ask Trader Joe’s to Stop its Complicity in Battery Cage Cruelty

Under pressure from the public, the Trader Joe’s grocery chain agreed in 2005 to limit its sales of eggs from hens confined in battery cages. While this is a laudable decision, Trader Joe’s still continues to sell some eggs from caged hens, advertising them for 99 cents a dozen. Ask Trader Joe’s to join Whole Foods, Wild Oats and several other natural food grocery chains that have stopped all sales of eggs from caged hens. Read more. Watch the video.

Purple. Red. Orange. Blue. Even pink. These are the colors of some of Farm Sanctuary’s newest residents. The group of nearly 50 baby chicks was recently rescued from a pet store in Brooklyn. 350 Advocates Support the Benefit for Compassion!

Farm Sanctuary’s Benefit for Compassion drew in more than 350 guests on April 7 at Jivamukti Yoga School in New York. The event was a resounding success for the animals! Chairman Russell Simmons inspired us with a presentation about his commitment to veganism and a life of compassion, and the talented Nelly McKay shared an enchanting performance. Vegetarian restaurants from all over the city provided an array of savory and sweet treats, and we previewed our new and soon-to-be-released educational video on foie gras cruelty. During the ’80s, when many people were learning how to crimp their hair and look stylish in leg warmers, Jane Shakman was discovering a fad that would never fade away—treating all sentient beings with compassion. Now, many fashion trends later, Jane’s concern for animals and their welfare is as strong as ever, and her story teaches people everywhere how much can be accomplished with just a few spare moments a day.
