ILLINOIS: ANOTHER WIN FOR HORSES!

Although a federal judge’s recent ruling has temporarily halted the slaughter of horses for human consumption, Illinois, home to one
of our nation’s few remaining horse slaughterhouses, must pass HB 1711 to make the victory permanent. We’re one big step closer
to success, as earlier this week the bill passed the House and now heads for the Senate.

FEDERAL: THE DOWNED ANIMAL & FOOD SAFETY PROTECTION ACT

The risk of tainted meat entering our food supply increases when downed animals are allowed to be slaughtered for human consumption. Contact your U.S. representative and senators now and urge them to protect both livestock and human health by supporting S. 394 and H.R. 661.

Subject: Farm Sanctuary’s E-News & Action Alert 04/05/07

Help Put a Permanent End to U.S. Horse Slaughter!

Recent months have seen tremendous success in the bid to shut down the horse slaughter industry in the U.S. First, a federal court ruling in Texas closed the horse slaughterhouses in Fort Worth and Kaufman, and just last month, a federal court ruling shuttered the remaining U.S. horse slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Ill. You can help ensure a permanent end to horse slaughter in the U.S. by asking your federal legislators to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Lily the Pig Savors the Good Life at Our California Shelter

Lily dodged death—and oncoming traffic—to become a pillar of the community at Farm Sanctuary’s California Shelter. She spends her days napping in the sun, and enjoying the company of other pigs and staff. Visitors, especially children, adore Lily, and she graciously accepts their attention, which inevitably includes petting her thick, furry ears. Lily emanates quiet strength and a real love of life. Read more about the uncontested “queen” of our pig barn!

Celebrating the Horses of Vieques

Dave Krueger of ViequesHorses.org is donating 25 percent of all print sales through the month of April to benefit Farm Sanctuary. ViequesHorses.org is the first and only collection of fine art prints celebrating the free-roaming horses on the island of Vieques, P.R., where Krueger lives part-time. For contemporary NYC artist Krueger, this work is a labor of love in hopes that these animals remain part of the island’s charm and beauty. To order please visit www.viequeshorses.org.

HSUS: Taking Action for Animals, July 28-30, 2007

Friday, February 9th, 2007

From: Taking Action for Animals - info [at] takingactionforanimals.com
Date: Feb 9, 2007 3:22 PM
Subject: Save the date for animals in July

SAVE THE DATE: Taking Action for Animals 2007

Dear Animal Advocate:

Two weeks ago, the world’s largest pig producer said it would phase out the use of cruel gestation crates over the next decade. This announcement by Smithfield Foods was a watershed moment for farm animals, and proof that we are having an impact.

Would you like to be part of the next major advance for animals?

Please join me for the largest national conference of the animal protection movement, designed to motivate, inspire, and teach skills to advocates from around the globe. The third annual Taking Action for Animals conference will be held July 28-30 in Washington, D.C.

This year’s conference, among other topics and training sessions, will have a special focus on the theme of taking action for farm animals. You’ll learn:

* How to help ban the worst abuses in factory farms, such as gestation crates, veal crates, battery cages, and forced-feeding for foie gras

* How to run a successful grassroots campaign, with case studies from effective efforts in the U.S. and abroad

* How to effectively engage and talk with media

* How to persuade corporations, schools, producers, and retailers to make major changes for animals

* Why there’s a growing shift away from industrialized factory farming systems

* What legal protections exist for animals

* How to help animals through local and state legislation

* What’s happening in Congress and what this year’s Farm Bill means for animals

* What’s happening for animals in Europe and beyond

* How to adopt a humane diet and encourage others to do the same

Registration includes keynote sessions, training workshops to develop practical skills for both seasoned advocates and those seeking to become more involved in animal protection, a Lobby Day on Capitol Hill, more than 50 exhibitors, social events, and invaluable opportunities for networking with colleagues, mentors, and fellow advocates.

Sponsored by Farm Sanctuary, The Humane Society of the United States, and other groups, Taking Action for Animals will feature special guest and long-time farm animal advocate Moby.

Don’t miss this chance to become more involved – join us in July! Click here to be one of the first to register. Then visit www.TakingActionforAnimals.com for program updates.

Location: Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center (map)

Hotel: Discounted rooms are available at Hotel Washington for $129 per night (single/double occupancy). For reservations call 1-800-424-9540 or visit www.hotelwashington.com. For the discounted rate you must make your reservation by July 6 and mention you are part of Taking Action for Animals (group ID# 35698).

I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Mike Markarian

DawnWatch: Veggie cooking demo, reversing diabetes lecture — Phoenix and elsewhere 2/1/07…..

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

From: DawnWatch - news [at] dawnwatch.com
Date: Feb 1, 2007 1:06 PM
Subject: DawnWatch: Veggie cooking demo, reversing diabetes lecture — Phoenix and elsewhere 2/1/07…..

Dr Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is on a book tour promoting his new book, “Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes.” He is currently in Arizona.

This morning, Thursday February 1, the Phoenix show Sonora Living, on ABC 15, included a cooking demonstration by chef Jason Wyrick, executive chef of the Vegan Culinary Experience. Wyrick was diagnosed before age 30 with diabetes and reversed it with a healthy vegan diet. He cooks a 20 Minute Black Bean Chipotle Chili. You can watch the demonstration on the show’s website at www.sonoranliving.com. It starts at about fifteen minutes past the hour.

Please take just a moment to thank the show and let them know you would love to see more veggie cooking demos. You can email them at sonoranliving [at] abc15.com.

Feedback matters!

The show also publicizes a lecture by Dr Barnard on how diet can offer dramatic improvements for those Americans living with diabetes.
