Please Take Action to Pass the Philly Foie Gras Prohibition

On the heels of the successful passage of Chicago’s foie gras ban, Philadelphia City Councilman Jack Kelly has introduced similar legislation to ban foie gras. Predictably, Councilman Kelly’s bill is drawing fire from some restaurants in Philadelphia. But as these restaurants turn up the heat on the City Council to maintain the cruel status quo, we need to turn up our voices to change it. Please take action to let the President of the City Council know that Philadelphia can’t afford to not ban foie gras cruelty. We need every animal protection advocate in the U.S. to speak up in support of Philadelphia’s proposed foie gras ban. To find out how you can help, visit: www.farmsanctuary.org/campaign/state_Phili.htm.

New Rescue in Need of Sponsorship

Cuddled and made over by children, Linus grew accustomed to human attention at the petting zoo he called home for his first months of life. However, once the end of the summer came and the kids left the camp where the zoo was located, Linus was headed back to where he came from: a pig farm—where he’d eventually be shipped off to slaughter. But fate and a dedicated volunteer intervened. Now Linus is living at our California Shelter—and looking for loving sponsors. Read more.

Introducing September’s Star Activist, Carol Marcus, a Friend of Felines and Farm Animals Alike!

Farm animal advocate Carol Marcus was just 8 years old when she rescued her first non-human companion. Since then, she’s marched for the whales, protested for primates, fought for the protection of fur-bearers, and befriended farm animals. If you want to be inspired to make a stand for the animals, check out Carol’s uplifting story here: farmsanctuary.org/actionalerts/activist_monthlymarcus.htm.

HSUS: Congressman Graves sides with dogfighters — speak out at rally on Monday (Kansas City)

RALLY ON MONDAY TO PROTEST REP. SAM GRAVES’ VOTE TO GIVE DOGFIGHTERS A FREE PASS

Please join the Humane Society Legislative Fund and concerned animal advocates to protest Rep. Sam Graves’ recent vote to give dogfighting a free pass.

When: Monday, August 27, 10:00-11:00 am
Where: Rep. Graves’ Liberty District Office, 113 Blue Jay Drive, Liberty, Missouri 64068

In the wake of the Michael Vick dogfighting case, you may wonder why Rep. Graves recently sided with dogfighting interests and voted against the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act. This legislation upgrades penalties for illegal transportation of fighting dogs — one of the crimes Vick has been charged with — from misdemeanor to felony penalties.

The vast majority of members of Congress supported this legislation to put a stop to precisely the type of behavior that Michael Vick was charged with — participation in a multi-state network of cruel and degrading dogfighting activities. Humane organizations and more than 400 law enforcement agencies supported the federal bill, yet Rep. Graves showed his true colors by giving dogfighters a free pass.

I hope you can make it to this rally. If you have friends or family in Rep. Graves’ district, please share this email link with them. Thank you for all you do for animals.

IDA: Breaking News: Vick to Plead Guilty to Dog Fighting Charges

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Vick to Plead Guilty to Dog Fighting Charges

Attend courthouse rally in Richmond on Monday, Aug. 27

When federal prosecutors first leveled charges of dogfighting against Michael Vick about a month ago, the star Atlanta Falcons quarterback denied any involvement in the illegal bloodsport, even though fighting dogs and equipment were found at his Virginia home. He also told Falcons team owner Arthur Blank and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell that he was innocent of the allegations against him, and maintained the same claim publicly.

Yet today, Vick officially changed his story by announcing he would be pleading guilty to felony charges of conspiring to run an illegal dogfighting operation called “Bad Newz Kennels” for the last six years. Three of his dogfighting cohorts — Quanis Phillips, Purnell Peace, and Tony Taylor — recently implicated Vick in plea agreements and agreed to testify against him in court. According to the co-defendants, Vick not only supplied most of the money used to run the dogfighting ring (including funds to cover $10,000 bets on individual fights), but actively helped execute at least eight dogs who lost fights by drowning and hanging.

Vick entered a guilty plea as part of a special deal with federal prosecutors requiring he fully cooperate with the investigation in exchange for a reduced prison sentence. Up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines may also be levied against Vick, but these would likely pale in comparison to the financial losses he will suffer when corporate sponsors permanently end their lucrative endorsement deals with the famous football player. Potentially, the most devastating punishment of all for the disgraced athlete is that he could be banned from the NFL for life under the league’s personal conduct policy.

Vick’s impending guilty plea to dogfighting charges reveals that he has been betraying the trust of the NFL, his teammates, football fans, and the public during these past weeks and even years, trying to hide his disgraceful criminal conduct behind a facade of flimsy denials. The first step in bringing Vick to justice will take place on Monday, August 27 at a plea hearing in Richmond, where a rally will be held outside the courthouse.

American Veterinary Medical Association Fails to Stand Against Cruelty

Once again the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has failed to take a position on one of the cruelest and most inhumane production methods used by agribusiness: the forced feeding of ducks and geese in the foie gras industry. Unfortunately, this is not a new trend by the AVMA. The association has also failed to take a position on veal crates, gestation crates and battery cages. Agribusiness has too much influence over the AVMA, and thus, the organization has defended inhumane practices. However, a growing number of veterinarians are opposed to the cruel methods used by the agriculture industry, and they are beginning to voice their concerns. Find out what you can do to encourage the AVMA to take a position on these cruel methods.

Piglets Endure Harrowing Start, Survive and Thrive at New York Shelter

Traditional wisdom holds that siblings tend to fight and bicker. The four pink piglets now living at our New York Shelter would beg to differ. Emily, Dennis, Farley and Ogar had been through a rough piglethood together, seized from the grips of a squatter living illegally on an abandoned piece of property in Maryland. When he was arrested for trespassing, they were left out in the cold. The quartet was taken in by a local humane agency that contacted Farm Sanctuary. Now they’re safe at our New York Shelter, and are looking for loving sponsors! Read more.

American Veal Association Announces Resolution to Phase in Group Housing

Earlier this year, the American Veal Association (AVA) voted to phase out the notoriously cruel veal crate confinement system and replace them with group housing systems. Measuring just 2 feet wide and allowing no freedom of movement, veal crates have been long considered one of the cruelest institutions in factory farming. The announced phase out, which is supposed to be complete by 2017, is significant and illustrates that growing consumer awareness is starting to have an impact, but there is still much work to be done. Please visit www.noveal.org to find out the next steps in curtailing the cruelties of the veal industry.

At New York Shelter, Baby Goats Overcome Malnutrition, Rough Start

Skye and Summer were seized from a backyard in New York City, found incarcerated in a box and standing in piles of their own feces. In addition to having been starved, both babies suffered from heavy parasite loads, not an uncommon condition for animals who had endured the kind of neglect Skye and Summer had. Only skin and bones when they arrived at our New York Shelter, TLC and medical attention have put the babies on the long road to recovery. Read more.

The 2007 Farm Bill – On the Floor this Week!; Use Your Voice to Help Farm Animals

The 2007 Farm Bill (HR 2419) is scheduled for debate by the House of Representatives today and tomorrow. This legislation includes a variety of issues including agriculture, nutrition and conservation. The version of the bill going to the floor today was improved significantly when the House Agriculture Committee responded to animal advocates’ calls and voted to remove both a $12 million veal subsidy and Section 123 (which would have threatened to dismantle virtually all state and local farm animal protection legislation). However, due to the broadness of the bill, there is ample opportunity for new amendments to be added, both those which are positive for animals and those which are detrimental. Please take action now to ensure that Congress acts responsibly by considering farm animals and reducing the funds that go to large-scale corporate animal agribusiness. Go to the Farm Sanctuary website to act now: www.farmsanctuary.org/actionalerts/update_farmbill_7_07.htm! Time is of the essence.

Farm Sanctuary also offers in-home placements through its Farm Animal Adoption Network, a more hands-on way to directly aid animals who have suffered. Read more.
