Okay, so maybe not as extreme as the women and men featured on TLC’s strangely addictive new show Extreme Couponing (it’s all fun and games…until someone uses their store credit to buy meat!) – that would require a commitment equal to a part-time job – so let’s just say “serious about free money,” mkay? Because that’s exactly what coupons are: money. Hopefully free, but at the very least cheap, as in pennies on the dollar.

Unfortunately, coupons for vegan foods – particularly intentionally vegan items, such as Tofurky pizzas and Follow Your Heart cheese, and fresh, whole foods like fruits and veggies – can be hard to come by. Not impossible, but certainly more difficult than, say, Dannon Yogurt freebies. But. With a little craftiness and a bit more patience, it is possible to score a discount on vegan goods!

Here are a few tips and tricks to get you started:

Ask. Really, it’s that simple! Write to your favorite manufacturers; explain to them that you’re a vegan on a budget who would love to try items xyz, but are hesitant to shell out so much money for a new foodstuff that you may or may not like, and would they be so kind as to send you a few coupons? Don’t be afraid to pour on the sugar! If coupons are to be had – and they aren’t always; you’ll find that smaller, newer companies don’t usually offer coupons – you will have them (usually in six to eight weeks). If you’re especially lucky (and charming!), the company may even send you vouchers for free items. As in you pay zip, zilch, nada, nothing.

Go dumpster diving for coupons. Take a trip to your nearest recycling center or paper recycling bin (Paper Retriever is a popular one ’round these parts) and dive in! Look for newspapers and inserts, but don’t make a mess. (Etiquette, y’all.) Load up your car, backpack or bicycle basket to go and sort through the coupons at home. When you’re done, save time, gas and trees by recycling the unwanted paper on your next dumpster diving expedition. It’s a win-win!

Hit up online auction sites. The idea of paying for coupons may seem counter-intuitive, but it’s the same principle behind online deal websites like Groupon: spend a little to save a lot. Coupons are a hot commodity, particularly those that are rare or hard to find. Oftentimes you can buy coupons by the bundle, either grouped thematically or by manufacturer. Some lots involve an entire book of coupons for the same item, which can be a great deal if it’s something you use frequently. Otherwise, team up with a friend or two to split the cost – and savings. Pay attention to the expiration dates, though; you don’t want to get stuck with a ton of coupons that expire in a week or two. (Then again, those are usually the cheapest! Decisions, decisions…)

Join a group discount website. Speaking of Groupon, group discount websites like Living Social, VeganCuts and the aforementioned Groupon offer deeply discounted rates on all sorts of items and activities. Sure, 90% of the deals involve spas and dating services, but every once in a while you’ll find a rare gem, like free shipping on Nacho Mom’s Vegan Queso, $20 worth of Whole Foods groceries for $10, or half off vegan marshmallows from Sweet & Sara. And VeganCuts, as the name implies, is all vegan – no gross summer sausage deals here – so you should definitely go show ‘em some love!

Subscribe to your favorite store’s e-newsletter. Stores routinely offer incentives to subscribe to their email lists, such as a first look at new, discounted and/or discontinued items, coupon codes entitling customers to a percentage off an entire order, or free shipping – vegan retailers included! (Vegan Essentials comes to mind.) If you don’t mind receiving a little extra email in your inbox, this can be a relatively simple way to hunt for savings (let them come to you!).

If your store offers a discount “loyalty” card, take it. Commonly, these cards shave a percentage off your order, or entitle you to extra savings on sale items. If you’re deterred by privacy concerns, you may consider purchasing more “private” items separately, without using the card.

Keep an eye out for coupons while shopping. Sometimes manufacturers affix coupons directly onto their corresponding items, or include books of tear-off coupons on displays. Always be on the lookout for these (vegan) Easter eggs!

Join a coupon swapping community. This one can be tricky for vegans – I tend to shred coupons for non-vegan items, rather than share them – but if you’re down, there are plenty of coupon swapping websites and forums online. Search for “coupon swap” on Yahoo Groups or Google to get started. Or, better yet, start your own vegan coupon swapping community! Maybe on VegWeb or the PPK forums? No need to compromise your ethics to score a deal!

Updated to add: Over on tumblr, Emelda tipped me off to Recyclebank, which allows users to earn points for doing good deeds; these points are then redeemable for various rewards, including – wait for it! – coupons! If you do, sign up using this link so she gets ten free points!

Well, (semi-)extreme couponers, it’s your turn! What do you do to save money on vegan foods and items?

Frugal vegans don’t waste food! Food waste on both the personal and institutional levels is a distressing problem: a 1995 estimate put our food waste at 27% of all edible food, while a more recent 2003 study found that the average American household throws out 14% of all food brought into the house. Among the many strategies I outlined for avoiding food waste during last year’s veganmofo – freezing extra baked goods, sharing with others and dumpster diving, to name a few – was freezing surplus or soon-to-spoil fruits and veggies. Banana ice cream – made from overly ripe, frozen bananas – is a delicious subset of this tip that deserves further exploration, especially given its popularity this year!

As fruit ripens, its sugar content changes; it becomes sweeter, softer, and less green:

The process of ripening is controlled by the plant hormone called ethylene, which is a gas created by plants from the amino acid called methionine. A plant hormone is a chemical that regulates growth and other processes. Storing fruit in a closed container keeps the ethylene from drifting away and can increase the rate at which the fruit ripens. Ethylene increases the intracellular levels of certain enzymes in fruit. Enzymes are proteins that make certain chemical reactions occur faster than they normally would. The key enzymes involved in fruit ripening are amylase and pectinase. Amylase breaks down starch to produce simple sugars, so is responsible for the increasing sweetness of a ripening fruit. Pectinase breaks down pectin, a substance that keeps fruit hard, so is responsible for the increasing softness of ripening fruit. Other enzymes cause the color of the fruit to change by breaking down chlorophyll (which is green) and replacing it with pigments that are yellow, red, or other colors.

This process is evident in bananas, which turn from bitter to sweet as their peels change in color from greenish-yellow to yellow, and then gradually develop brown spots. Wait too long to crack the peel, and you’ll be greeted with a mushy, sugary mess (and possibly a swarm of fruit flies, to boot!). While many a banana has been tossed due to over-ripeness, because of their sugar content – as well as the way in which freezing alters their texture – brown bananas make the perfect base for nondairy ice cream. Better yet, this frozen treat can be made in a blender or food processor, no ice cream machine required! (Though I do love my ice cream maker like a member of the family.)

Banana ice cream is a great way to use up “accidentally spoiled” bananas – but if you’re anything like me, you’ll soon find yourself buying yellow bananas and allowing them to turn brown, just so you can make another batch of banana ice cream! However you come across them, preparing your over-ripe bananas for ice cream is simple: simply peel and slice them, then transfer them to an airtight container and store in the freezer until ready for use. Next, you’ll need a recipe; here are a few of my favorites to get you started!

two-ingredient ice cream, strawberry pecan ice cream and breakfast banana ice cream – All from hipsterfood, who tipped me off to the latest craze in vegan desserts.

My most favorite of the bunch, hands down.

And it’s the veganmofo Friday Food Season Finale, at that. How exciting!

(Seriously, the husband and I are opting/lazing out of the traditional Tofurky and mashed potato feast this year. But feel free to visit ghosts of meals past, mkay?
In this black and white double exposure, we see a photo of some sidewalk graffiti juxtaposed with the image of two people walking together, arm in arm, along a city street. The graffiti is a stencil of the bespectacled, top-hatted Monopoly millionaire – now bearing wings as well – flying out of an opened bird cage; freedom! Underneath this image is the slogan “Invest in Sharing.” A lovely pairing of words, I think. ——————————

I admit it; I so did not come up with the title of this week’s “frugal vegans” post by my lonesome. Prior to finding multiple examples of the totally awesome “Invest in Sharing” stencil (pictured above) on Flickr, this tip was to be called “frugal vegans share with others.” Meh, how boring. I don’t even think such a title is fit to grace a Sesame Street skit.

So what, pray tell, do I mean by “invest in sharing” in the context of frugality? Well, it’s simple, really. If you’re anything like me, you own multiple kitchen appliances, utensils and assorted gadgets that rarely, if ever, see the light of day. Possibly you purchased them new – or even second-hand – and with every intention of getting your money’s worth. Perhaps you do use some of these items as often as is reasonable – but reason only requires occasional or seasonal use. Whatever the case, your kitchen – indeed, your entire house – is most likely packed with consumer goods that are not in use 99% of the time.

Why not save money – and the environment – by splitting the cost and custody of these items with like-minded friends?

By way of illustration, let’s say that both you and your BFF are jonesing for a shiny new ice cream maker. Neither of you can afford to buy a nice electric model on your own. But if you pool your resources, what was an out-of-reach luxury purchase suddenly becomes do-able (albeit possibly still a luxury). At most, you might churn a batch or two of ice cream a month; the rest of the time, the machine would sit on a shelf in your pantry, unused and totally bored. Rotating the ice cream maker between two households on a weekly basis, then, won’t really affect the amount of use and enjoyment that each party can get out of it. Just plan ahead and make a little extra ice cream for your “off” week when it is your turn to use the ice cream maker.

This “shared cost, shared custody” arrangement could work with a number of kitchen items – depending, of course, on personal use and preferences:

- Rotisserie ovens/kits (for Tofurky, duh!)
- Popcorn machines
- Cotton candy machines (yes, they exist!)
- Extra/fold-able table and chairs (i.e., for entertaining)

…to name but a few.

Of course, sharing need not be confined to the kitchen! Here are some other household items that one could conceivably share with only minor inconvenience:

- Animal traps (humane, of course!)
- Animal cages (e.g., for rescued and yet-to-be-rehabilitated free-living animals)
- “Pet” grooming/nail clipping kits
- Laminators
- Sewing machines
- Ladders
- Plumber’s snakes (bathroom supplies in a food post? ew!)
- Pressure washers
- Chainsaws
- Electric drills
- Garden tillers
- Wet/dry vacs
- Work lights
- Hand trucks
- Lawn mowers
- Snow blowers
- Wood chippers
- Log splitters
- Welding supplies

I’m sure that there are dozens, if not hundreds, of items that I’m overlooking; most likely, I even own a few of them and have plum forgotten, since I use them so infrequently!

Now, before you protest – Cake stands! How dare you!?! I need those for my thrice-daily food porn photo shoots! – let me repeat that this list will differ from person to person. My idea of a rarely used, nearly-dispensable widget is not necessarily your idea of a rarely used, nearly-dispensable widget – and that’s fine. All that matters is that the two (or more!) parties purchasing and sharing these items are in agreement.

Naturally, this tip comes with a laundry list of caveats and obstacles:

It’s wisest to share items with people you trust – and to whom you live in close proximity or see on a regular basis.

Work out the details – will the sharing be rigidly scheduled or on an as-needed basis? how will purchase and maintenance costs be split? what happens if one party breaks or damages the item? what if one owner moves away? – beforehand, so there aren’t isn’t any confusion or misunderstandings.

Don’t spend more on an item than you’re willing to lose – especially if your co-owner is a cherished friend or family member.

Don’t share items you plan to use frequently or that you and your co-owner will need/want to use at the same time.

Always write up a contract. Even if it’s on the nearest cocktail napkin. (Cynical, who me?)

Aside from the obvious benefit of saving money, these kinds of arrangements also help to reduce unnecessary consumerism. I mean really, does every family on the block need, say, its own garden tiller? Not to mention, the extra space required to store it? (Answer: NO!) This is the kind of tool you put to use once, maybe twice a year; there’s no reason it can’t do double (like, x20) duty between two+ households, thus removing one or more tillers from the never-ending stream of consumption, disposal and waste.

Insert: The Story of Stuff video here.

The Story of Stuff: From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view.
Look at that. Ask and ye shall receive!

* Speaking of, my parents have the coolest old school – we’re talking turn of the century! – meat grinder. (NO WAIT DON’T STOP READING! NO HIPSTER MEAT LOVE HERE! I AM A VEGANMOFOER, THROUGH AND THROUGH!) We only unpacked that bad boy once every four months or so, to grind up potatoes for potato pancakes. NOM! My stomach is working up a mini-earthquake just thinking about those pancakes. SO. GOOD., y’all!**

** If you’re reading, mom, that grinder had better be in your will. MINE, ALL MINE!

(Yes, that was a link to a “meat” pie that I posted earlier; and no, I’m not losing my mind. Maybe I just find the idea of a vertically-challenged “meat” dessert easier to wrap my head around? Fewer layers, at least. Less food mixage. Food mixage, no like.)

Also – and I know it’s still a little early to be thinking about x-mas, but – gift ideas from I Eat Trees!

Marla at Vegan Feminist Agitator has been blogging tips for World Vegan Month all November. You should totes check it out!

Last but not least, Isa is reminiscing about the five cookbooks that changed her life.
The seeds of this week’s frugal vegan tip were planted several years ago, when I read a piece written by Lauren of the (seemingly) now-defunct blog Faux Real Tho. If memory serves correctly, Lauren described a sort of “work party,” wherein a group of friends and family members descended upon her backyard in order to help her and her husband create a garden space in their new home. In return for food and alcohol – naturally. The ultimate garden party, if you will.

Work + wine = a work party
Work + wine + dirt + produce = a garden party

Of course, bribing and plying your friends with alcohol and shiny happy vegan cupcakes is a great way to procure a little extra help when needed. But let’s take this concept a step further, shall we? Why split only the work when you can share it all: monetary expenses, land, labor, knowledge, materials and yield?

Let’s say, for example, that you want to start growing some of your own (VEGAN!) food in order to save money and become more self-sufficient (the apocalypse, it’s coming!). You have the space to establish a good-sized garden and the funds to cover any start-up costs – but are lacking the know-how and expertise to make it a rousing success. Or perhaps you’re an experienced gardener but are currently living in an apartment space which only affords room for a small window garden. Maybe you have the time to devote to weeding, watering, harvesting and preserving, but no money with which to buy the supplies. By pooling your resources with friends, family members and/or acquaintances, all of these potential pitfalls can be overcome.

WWII – Women’s Land Army of the U.S. Crop Corps (1944);
via Northwestern University’s World War II poster collection.
In this vintage, government-issued WWII propaganda poster, women are shows harvesting veggies, milking cows and feeding chickens. The copy reads, “Pitch in and help! Join the women’s land army of the U.S. crop corps.” Clearly, in my vegan utopia, the nonhuman animals live on a sanctuary, not a farm, and the ladies pictured in this pastoral scene are vegans caring for their nonhuman friends. Also: the men-folk are working the garden as well, but off to the side and just out of frame.
——————————

A shared garden can take a variety of forms. Perhaps one family provides the necessary land, water and supplies while their neighbors down the street assume responsibility for the daily chores required to keep it thriving – and all the produce grown is split 50/50 (or whatever seems fair to those involved).

Or let’s say that you and your friends want to try gardening, but only one of you owns a home, complete with a suitable backyard space. Why not have everyone chip in the funds required to establish and maintain the garden, and get together several times a week for a little dinner, drinks and gardening? Chores seem less tedious when performed in the company of (fed and inebriated) friends, no?

On the more extreme end of the spectrum, perhaps you’re able to rally your entire neighborhood around this cause, such that you collectively decide to allocate a public space for the garden, and divvy up all expenses, labor and crops equally. (No animals though, mkay? They’re friends, not food!)

(This sort of large-scale project begins to resemble a community garden, which is beyond awesome, particularly from a food justice standpoint. Every community should have access to fresh fruit and veggies – as well as the ability to grow them locally and sustainably – in this vegan mofo’s opinion. To find out how you can help community gardens survive and thrive in the United States, visit the American Community Gardening Association’s website and take action.)

However it’s organized, a shared garden can save you both time and money – while also fostering a sense of community and bringing you closer to the ones you love. If you’re lucky enough to have a veteran green thumb or amateur botanist join the party, laboring in a group has the added benefit of shared expertise and wisdom passed from one generation and/or population to another. And you know what they say about knowledge. It’s power, yo.

How about you? Have any of the mofo’s in the audience ever participated in a shared or community garden? Share your thoughts and experiences with us in the comments!

It took me a good six hours, but I finally finished working through this year’s veganmofo blogroll earlier this week. Everything looks so nice and neat and sorted now! Of course, this means that I have even more Friday Food to share with y’all! Enjoy the links, and try not to drool on your keyboard or, worse yet, lick your monitor (it’s not real, it’s just an illusion!).

Before we get started, though, I have got to direct you to the following blogs – or, more to the point, blog titles, which tickled me every shade of pink whilst browsing through them. Most are rooted in pop culture, which is totally my thing.

Frugal Vegans

In a new-to-Friday Food feature, I’ve also decided to feature those veganmofo posts that focus on saving money. After all, this whole roundup is an outgrowth of my “Frugal Vegans…” series, so it only seems natural to include my fellow mofo’er’s forays into frugality, dontchathink?

Apropos yesterday’s conversation about how to be an awesome vegan through food reclamation, Joni @ justthefood.com gives us: The Garbage Pizza! Ain’t nothing trashy about that bad boy, I tell you what.

Katie @ Don’t Eat Off The Sidewalk! shares her tips for eating vegan while on a budget in the awesomely titled Let’s get this party started as cheaply as possible!

Mo @ Mo Betta Vegan (another shiny happy blog name!) shares her dollar and discount stores finds. If you’ve never shopped at a Dollar Store, friends, you haven’t lived. Dog’s mouth to your ears.

Nicole at Vegan Nom Noms goes dumpster diving and returns home with a CSA’s worth of produce. Her finds? Impressive!

Also impressive: her mad coupon blegging skillz. Mission: Vegan Coupons is a must-read. (I’ve tried this one before; several times, actually. It really works!)

Finally, in the first of what promises to be a series – The Barebones Vegan – chooseyourownfoodchain suggests a list of relatively inexpensive must-have vegan kitchen appliances and accessories. Stay tuned for more!

So, mofo’s. Which veganmofo posts have you been loving on this week? Remember: sharing is caring!

A recent study in the Journal of Environmental Science & Technology estimated that Americans waste nearly 350 million barrels of oil per year in the form of food. These figures represent 2% of our annual energy consumption, and are based in part on an even more shocking 1995 estimate that 27% of our edible food is wasted – simply thrown away – at both the individual and institutional levels.

While much of this waste happens before food even reaches consumers – for example, produce that looks “irregular” or is marred by “blemishes” may be tossed by farmers or rejected by grocers – who among us can say that she’s never thrown out a half-finished bag of moldy rolls or composted the odd bruised apple? If just half of this waste occurs in our own kitchens and pantries, then the average American is tossing nearly 15% of the food she purchases straight into the garbage.* By cutting out this waste, then, we could potentially save 15% on our grocery bills.

Reporting on these findings over at Salon, Francis Lam offers seven tasty ways to stop wasting food – six of which are vegan or vegan-friendly. These include:

Be creative about stale bread;

Freeze in-danger-of-expiring (nondairy) milk;

Save trim and scraps for stock;

Sauté leftover pasta, rice, and cooked grains (or, you know, just reheat and it, if you’re not a food snob like Lam);

Repurpose leftover sauces, soups, and (vegetable) meat juices to add flavor to other dishes; and

Don’t toss an item just because it’s expired – many foodstuffs are edible past date. Trust your senses and use good judgment.

Building on Lam’s list, Jordan @ vegansaurus! recommends that you be a more awesome vegan by:

Making impromptu soups, stews, and curries with neglected veggies;

Baking fruit crisps and crumbles with overripe apples and such;

Liquefying extra produce into smoothies;

Investing in high quality food storage containers; and

Buying a spiffy new lunch set that will hopefully inspire you to take leftovers to work.

Of course, because I am a totally awesome – and usually-frugal – vegan, I have a few additional suggestions to add to the mix!

Prepare and freeze surplus fruits and veggies. If you find yourself with more fresh produce than you can reasonably use before it goes bad, freeze it for later use. Many fruits and vegetables can be stored safely in deep freeze: apples, bananas, carrots, zucchini, peppers, jalapenos, blueberries, strawberries, potatoes – I’ve had good luck with all of these. For added convenience, prep the ingredients before storage: wash, peel and/or dice them so that you can just grab them to go in the future. This can also help to cut down on the storage space required by certain items, e.g., those that are hollow (peppers) or have inedible cores (cantaloupes). Check out this guide from the University of Minnesota to get you started.

Prepare and freeze dishes for use at a later date. Even more convenient than freezing prepared ingredients: preparing and freezing entire meals! This is a great option for vegans on the go, who might otherwise be stuck noming on overly expensive frozen dinners or settling for cold cereal at the end of a long day.

Freeze extra baked goods. Are you noticing a theme here? The freezer is your friend! Defrosted cookies may not taste as good as freshly baked ones – but they’re far, far yummier than moldy ones! Donuts, turnovers, bagels, bread and rolls – I’ve frozen them all. As long as you eat them quickly (i.e., within a month or two), you’ll hardly be able to tell the difference.

Share with others. Okay, so this tip isn’t going to save you any money in the short run, but it does tackle the issue of food waste. If you find yourself in possession of more fruit or veggies than you can eat on your own, gift some to a friend, coworker, family member – or even stranger – in need. Whether you believe in karma or subscribe to the golden rule, this kind deed may even come back to you in the future!

Your dog kids need to eat, too! If your dog friends are anything like mine, they dig many of the same foods as us: carrots, peppers, apples, bananas, snow peas, lettuce, potatoes (sweet potatoes, can I get a hell yeah!), tofu, you name it! (Ditto: other omnivorous and herbivorous critters.) Many fruits and veggies make for a yummy snack; in the summer time, frozen produce is an especially refreshing treat. If you cook for your nonhuman kids, incorporate extra foodstuffs into their menu. Just be careful to avoid dangerous and problem foods, mkay?

When shopping, underestimate the amount of fresh items you’ll need by 15-20%. If Americans overbuy by +/- 15%, then it stands to reason that we should undershoot by as much when shopping, right? Start out low to avoid buying more than you need, and then adjust your shopping list every week until you’ve found that sweet spot. If you run out of fresh produce or baked goods before your next scheduled shopping trip, you can always make an early run – or survive on the frozen leftovers from previous shopping sprees! Plus, there’s always canned goods and homemade bread, yes?

Go dumpster diving! The above tips only deal with individual waste; what of waste at the commercial level? While we only have limited control over the actions of others – particularly collective others, such as businesses and industries – we can take small steps toward reducing waste locally, in our own neighborhoods. Take, if you will, dumpster diving! Businesses throw out all manner of expired – but still edible – foodstuffs (and other items, too). By salvaging these, you both rescue them from the landfill and reduce the amount of “new” items you consume as well.

If you’re new to dumpster diving, be sure to do your research beforehand. Be informed about local laws and customs; know which businesses are amenable to the practice; and, if you’re well off enough that dumpster diving isn’t an economic necessity for you, don’t dive in areas that support a low-income or homeless population. If you know an experienced diver, you may want to accompany him or her before setting off on your own. Go to freegan.info for more.

Encourage businesses to donate unwanted goods to food banks and other non-profit organizations. Also falling under the rubric of curbing institutional waste is this last tip, which is most likely to find success with small and locally owned businesses (less bureaucracy!). If you notice that your grocer is tossing out a lot of edible food and usable items (for example, metal that can be sold for scrap), approach the manager or owner with a list of suggested charities in need of the items in question.

Do your homework beforehand; you want to make this as simple as possible for the powers that be! Spell out potential benefits, stressing how they outweigh the costs: donations equal tax breaks, a reduction in waste disposal fees, and all the great PR you can exploit!

Be creative: if there are any animal sanctuaries in the area, get in touch with them to see whether they can make use of past-date produce (or even packaged foods). Don’t overlook “pet” stores, either: our nonhuman friends also suffer in rough economic times, and “pet” food banks have sprouted up across the country in order to provide dog and cat food to families in need.

In this vintage, WWII propaganda poster, the president sternly-but-lovingly (he’s our super-dad, yo!) issues the following reminder to the American public: “Hunger does not breed reform; it breeds madness and all the ugly distemper that makes an ordered life impossible…the future belongs to those who prove themselves the true friends of mankind.” (And human and animal-kind, I should add.) “Save food, don’t waste it,” signed the United States Food Administration.
——————————

* Indeed, in 2003, researchers teamed up with the USDA to study food waste in American households. Tim Jones, a researcher at the University of Arizona’s Contemporary Archaeology Project, and his students spent a year surveying 200 families in Delaware and Arizona about their purchasing habits, tallying grocery receipts, and combing through household garbage in order to collect and weigh wasted food. Their results? The average American household throws out an astounding 470 pounds of food per year – or 14% of all food brought into the house.

What about you vegan mofo’s? How do you keep food from ending up in the trash bin?

During last year’s VeganMoFo, I launched a new series about how to live frugally as a vegan. The idea was to both offer helpful tips for those vegans looking to save money, while also providing a counterpoint to the idea that veganism is necessarily expensive. Loosely titled “Frugal Vegans…,” the series unfortunately fizzled and died with October, in part because I don’t do a whole lot of food blogging outside of VeganMoFo. But hey, look on the bright side! VeganMoFo is back, baby! And with it, “Frugal Vegans…”

As a sort of refresher course, here are the topics we covered last year:

VeganMoFo, Day 12: Frugal Vegans…Say “Hey” (Hey!)

VeganMoFo, Day 17: Vegan Treats On (Vegan) Etsy

VeganMoFo, Day 20: Frugal vegans stockpile staples as though the dead are reanimating.

VeganMoFo, Day 22: The New Four Food Groups (A Tutorial)

VeganMoFo, Day 23: Frugal vegans freecycle (or is that freegancycle?).

VeganMoFo, Day 26: A Penny-Pinching Monday Mashup

VeganMoFo, Day 27: Frugal vegans prep their own ingredients.

VeganMoFo, Day 29: Frugal vegans have spoiled vegan dog-kids.

(I also have an entire category dedicated to frugality, though it’s mostly comprised of the posts listed above.)

Today’s tip is short and sweet: hoard your deliciousness. By which I mean…well, go see for yourself: www.delicious.com/easyvegan/recipe

Now look. I’m all in favor of supporting one’s favorite vegan cookbook authors and chefs (especially those who are also vocal advocates for oppressed animals, both human and non!). And you can and should support them by purchasing (and promoting) their cookbooks (and blogs, podcasts, appearances, etc.) when possible. But not everyone can afford to buy a new book every week, month or even year. Libraries rock – and, imho, borrowing cookbooks from the library, thus increasing demand for these titles, counts as support – but not everyone has ready access to a library or library services.

Luckily, there are plenty of recipes and ideas to be had for free online, as is amply evidenced by VeganMoFo. (Speaking of which, have you seen the tragically awesome RSS feed bundles yet? You will never leave the house again!) Just search for “vegan recipes” (over 4 million hits on Google!) – or hop on over to my blogroll of vegan foodies for a more whittled down version – to get started.

But how to keep track of all this vegan nom? delicious to the rescue! With delicious you can bookmark, tag, sort, share and comment on your favorite links.

You can create an account dedicated solely to recipes, or use a larger account and segregate your recipes from all else by assigning them one universal tag (i.e., recipe).

Don’t stop there! Use additional tags to help you further sort and browse through your recipe collection.

For example, tag the recipes based on:

Ingredients – What ingredients are most prominent in or necessary to the dish? (e.g., peanut butter, apples, chocolate)

Mealtime – For which meal are you most likely to prepare this recipe? (e.g., breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert)

Type of dish – Into which general category of food does this recipe fall? (e.g., cupcakes, dressing, soup, beverage)

Skill level – Based on your own level of culinary expertise, how difficult a recipe is this? (e.g., beginner, intermediate, advanced)

Availability of ingredients – How likely are you to have the necessary ingredients on hand? Does this recipe require any advance preparation or extra shopping trips? (e.g., staples vs. special order)

Ethnicity, culture or country – Does this dish originate from or contain the culinary elements of a certain country or culture? (Italian, Indian, American, Ethiopian)

Holiday – Is this recipe specific to a certain holiday? (Halloween, x-mas)

If you cook for any of your nonhuman friends, you can even add a tag specifically for dog food or dog treats (etc.)!

Once you’ve bookmarked the vegan food tubes to your tummy’s content, use the tags you developed to browse your virtual cookbook. Don’t stop with one tag, though; combine tags to make finding the perfect recipe a snap.

For example, let’s say you’re in the mood for cookies – something chocolaty, to be exact. But seeing as you just polished off that quart of vanilla brownie ice cream you made the other day, you should probably shoot for a recipe that at least has the pretense of healthfulness. Hello, rolled oats!

Use the “+” sign to combine your desired tags – cookies+chocolate+oats – to look up all the recipes that fit the bill (e.g., www.delicious.com/easyvegan/cookies+chocolate+oats).

delicious also allows users to organize tags into groups called bundles.

In the screenshot below, you can see a view of all of my tags (well, from K to R, anyhow); those that are highlighted in gray belong to my food and recipes bundle.

(Clearly, I missed a few. Pie crust and pierogies, I owe you both an apology!)

The bundle feature is especially helpful for those who manage multiple types of links in one account.

Additionally, delicious lets you keep separate notes for each link. I usually use this feature to comment on how a recipe turned out, what (if anything) I might do differently the next time around, etc.

You can also use the “share” feature to, well, share links with other delicious users. Let’s say your omni sister is also on delicious; if your vegan feminist arguments for animal rights aren’t enough to convince her to give up milk and eggs, perhaps some yummy vegan cupcake (not-) porn will do the trick?

Finally, a caveat: if perchance you meet a recipe you super♥ on the internets, be sure to print a hard copy and/or save it to your machine, in case the blog or website on which it’s hosted ever goes under. Heartbreak, I’ve been there. Learn from my bads so they weren’t suffered in vain, mkay?

Starting tomorrow and continuing every Friday throughout November, I’ll be sharing a roundup of all the recipes I bookmarked on delicious the previous week. Brace yourself – it’s about to get hot and hungry around here.

Of course, there are similar tools available on the interwebs; delicious is just the one I use and am most familiar with. What about you? How do you save, file and organize your favorite electronic vegan recipes?
