Subject: ADOPT - Don’t Buy This Holiday Season & Join The Puppy Store Protest!

This holiday season children and adults of all ages will be given a new companion animal. Unfortunately, the cute little puppy or kitten for sale in the pet store or on the internet probably came from a “puppy mill,” a mass breeding facility that put profits over the health and well-being of puppies and their parents.Happy Rescue Puppy

Each year over 2 million puppy mill puppies are sold in the United States. Puppies travel hundred of miles in pickup trucks, tractor trailers, and/or airplanes, often without adequate food, water, ventilation, or shelter. If the puppies survive the horrors of transport, conditions don’t imporve much when they reach their destination; young dogs kept in small cages without exercise, love, or human contact tend to develop undesireable behaviors and may bark excessively or become destructive or unsociable. Puppies that do not sell and become too old to be a valuable product are either killed, become “brood bitches,” or are sold to laboratories for research or product testing.

Spread the word, ADOPT - Don’t Buy! To stop the puppy mill industry, consumers must stop buying animals from pet stores. You can create change!

Please ADOPT - Don’t Buy this Holiday Season!

LCA is asking you to get involved in our ADOPT -Don’t Buy campaign.

Here are a couple quick and easy ways to make a difference.

The easyVegan Guide to Easy, Veg*n Holiday Gifts

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Update, 12/12/07

Two more gift guides, courtesy of Vegan Outreach:

* The Vegetarian Site: Top 20 Vegan Gifts under $20

* The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG): Vegetarian-Friendly Books for Children and Parents (.pdf)

————————

Update, 12/7/07 @ 2:30PM:

Doh! As feared, I forgot a few links!

Firstly, in terms of animal rescue groups, add Eastern Shore Chicken Sanctuary to the list. You’ll have to make your own gift package, but it’s well worth it. Founded by the lovely pattrice jones, Eastern Shore

provides a haven for hens and roosters who have escaped or been rescued from the poultry and egg industries or other abusive circumstances. In addition to sheltering and advocating for chickens, we conduct research and community education aimed at diet change and agriculture reform.

Also, consider ordering a copy of pattrice’s book Aftershock for the activist in your life. (You can read my review here.)

In my hurry to get this thing posted, already (!) I even overlooked a whole mini-category of non-profit groups: animal rescue groups that primarily care for the companion animals of deployed military personnel. This could make a great gift for a relative who may not normally be concerned with animal welfare issues - but wants to “support the troops”.

Check out:

* Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet / MVP Sanctuary: The group is a network of foster homes that care for the animals of deployed soldiers anywhere from 6 to 24 months+. A sanctuary in Arkansas is in the works.

* Elgin Pet Welfare: Located on Eglin Air Force Base, the group is open to the public, but aims to serve those who serve their country.

Come back for updates - methinks there will be a few.

————————

‘Tis the season…and this season, Americans say they’ll spend around 866 large on gifts for their loved ones. Why not put some of that change to work - changing the world?

Last year, my Holiday Gifts for Activists & Agitators proved to be surprisingly popular (as did its follow-up, Even More Holiday Gifts for Activists & Agitators), so let’s see if we can’t share the love again this year? I’ve got even more links to round up this time around, which means more options for a green, animal-friendly, and socially-conscious Christmas Christmas / Hanukkah / Kwanzaa / Festivus / FSMas season.

One Country’s Companion Is Another’s Cuisine

Red rivulets flow past a cage where he and others huddle in the airless heat. Hands abruptly tug him through metal slats. They bash his head with a pipe and shove an electric prod against him. He is a carcass, but awake, dunked in boiling water and blowtorched. Finally, everything goes black.

Elsewhere, an animal stiffens under the stomp of muddy boots. Hands drag him down a corridor and flip him over a four-foot ledge. A chain is looped around his neck and clipped to a forklift. Suddenly the ground goes away. Up, up, up. His legs fumble for an absent bottom. He panics beneath the rigid clamp at his neck. After four, five or more minutes, all breath leaves his body.

Their fear and pain are equal. But the first is a dog, the second a pig — and herein lies our cultural divide. Empathy for the dog does not extend to empathy for the pig.
