Amnesty International’s Global Write-a-thon, December 7-10, 2007: Support a “Terra-ist”

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

UPDATE, 11/15/07:

Updated to include Daniel McGowan’s unit # on his mailing address:

Daniel McGowan
#63794-053, Unit I
FCI Sandstone
P.O. Box 1000
Sandstone, MN 55072

Thanks to Jenny for the correction!

—————————-

In honor of International Human Rights Day (December 10th), Amnesty International is holding a “Global Write-a-thon” through December 7-10, 2007.

The details:

On or around International Human Rights Day (December 10) activists from around the world write letters on behalf of individuals at risk of human rights abuses. The Global Write-a-thon was initiated by Amnesty International Poland in 2002 and was a huge success. It became a global, annual event that involves tens of thousands of participants from more than thirty countries. The goal is that this intense and concentrated pressure will elicit positive change in the lives of human rights defenders, prisoners of conscience, and other victims of human rights abuses.

Everyone can participate. It’s easy! Follow the 5 simple steps below:

1. Register for the write-a-thon as an individual or as a group. Watch as your pledges help light up the Amnesty candle.

2. Spread the word! Encourage your friends and family to get involved.

3. Check out the write-a-thon resources online starting the week of November 12th. You’ll find everything you need to participate on this site including case sheets, sample letters, a checklist for how to plan an event, and promotional materials. For hard copies, please email us at writeathon [at] aiusa.org

4. Write and mail lots of letters on Dec. 7-10.

5. Report back: Let us know how many letters were sent.

While Amnesty International focuses its efforts on prisoners of conscience who have been jailed for their human rights activities (for example, some of this year’s cases include “a prisoner of conscience from Myanmar, a disappeared student from Chechnya, and a survivor of rape from the Democratic Republic of Congo”), why not organize an event to generate letters of support for jailed animal rights and eco-activists instead of in addition to AI’s suggested targets? Better yet, register your event with Amnesty International and report your letters to the org - tell them that animal rights activists, tree huggers, and other “terra-ists” are important to you, too!

Interestingly, the same day that Amnesty International emailed their announcement of the Global Write-a-thon, Last Chance for Animals (LCA) sent out an action alert urging supporters to “Reach Out to an Animal Activist in Prison!” You can find that email - along with additional resources for AR prisoner support - after the flip.

Farm Sanctuary’s E-News & Action Alert 11/9/07

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Farm Sanctuary - info [at] farmsanctuary.org
Date: Nov 9, 2007 5:27 PM
Subject: Farm Sanctuary’s E-News & Action Alert 11/9/07

Take Action to Prevent Cloning!

The cloning of farm animals is a hot-button issue both for animal protection and consumer protection groups, because cloned animals frequently suffer from fatal, congenital defects—including weakened immune systems; dysfunctional hearts, brains, livers, and kidneys; respiratory distress; and circulatory problems—all of which lead to pain and early death. And now, thanks to an amendment drafted by U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Arlen Specter (R-PA), we have a chance to stop the haphazard cloning of animals for the human food supply. Please take action now!

38 Turkey Peeps Spared from Certain Death on Factory Farm

Looking into the bright, innocent eyes of Sullivan, it is hard to comprehend the suffering he endured only weeks ago—let alone the bleak future he would have faced had he not found refuge at Farm Sanctuary. Left on our doorstep with 37 other peeps, Sullivan’s place of origin will forever remain a mystery. But careful inspection of his and the other babies’ beaks and toes, all of which bear evidence of abuse, reveals enough to mark them as the victims of one of our nation’s cruelest institutions: the factory farm. Read more.

Activist Of The Month: Jean Liebenberg

Jean Liebenberg had been vegetarian for 26 years before she set foot on Farm Sanctuary grounds. But from the moment she visited and met her adoptive “daughter,” Angie pig, Jean was hooked. Now Jean is a tireless volunteer, who has sponsored three of our farm animal friends, invited two rescued bunnies into her home, and devoted countless hours volunteering at our New York Shelter. Read all about Jean’s journey and be inspired to make a difference for farm animals!

Thanksgiving Activism

It’s time to hit the streets and encourage others to make a difference for the birds! Spread the word by distributing informational leaflets on the reality of turkey production, brochures on our nationally-celebrated Adopt-A-Turkey Program, and “Compassionate Thanksgiving Recipes” booklets far and wide. Also available for outreach purposes are copies of our educational “Making of a Turkey” documentary and our holiday Public Service Announcements starring Persia White and Corey Feldman. IDA Writing Alert: World GO VEGAN Days

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: In Defense of Animals - takeaction [at] idausa.org
Date: Oct 23, 2007 11:31 AM
Subject: Writing Alert: World GO VEGAN Days

World GO VEGAN Days Oct 27-29

World GO VEGAN Days is an annual event designed to spread information and educate people about the vegan lifestyle, which is a compassionate way of eating and living. Veganism is a healthy choice that shows love and respect for animals, the environment and your own life. As a vehicle to promote veganism each year through outreach events and the media, we hope that World GO VEGAN Days will help make the word “vegan” a household term that is universally recognized as meaning love and compassion for all living beings. World GO VEGAN Days will be observed on October 26, 27, and 28 2007.

“World GO VEGAN Days” is also about celebrating what it means to be vegan. Veganism enables people to live in balance with all of Earth’s creatures and promote freedom for animals from exploitation as part of their everyday lives. Modern animal agriculture is cruel and violent toward the chickens, cows, pigs and other creatures used to make meat, milk and eggs. During World GO VEGAN Days, we encourage people to become conscious of what - and who - they are eating, the effect it has on the world, and that a non-violent alternative exists.

Non-profit Warns of Halloween Dangers to Chained Dogs

Asks caretakers to keep dogs inside every night-especially on Halloween

Tipton, PA, October 12, 2007 — For dogs that are kept perpetually chained, a dark, autumn night is just another night to be cold, lonely and longing for affection. On Halloween, a chained dog may also have to fear for his life.

Halloween is a particularly dangerous time for dogs that are kept chained outside, warns Dogs Deserve Better, a non-profit dedicated to ending the suffering endured by dogs that are kept perpetually chained or caged. At Halloween, the group frequently sees an increase in the number of dogs that are helpless victims of attack. Fireworks or rocks are sometimes thrown at them and more horrific crimes, such as dogs being set on fire, have occurred in recent years. In addition, chained dogs can easily become agitated by strangers in or near their yards. Dogs Deserve Better representatives have encountered incidents of dogs breaking free from their chains and attacking trick-or-treaters.

Dogs Deserve Better works on numerous fronts year round to change minds and laws, educating about the dangers 24/7 chaining pose, both to dogs and to people, who can become the victims of chained dogs that grow angry, frustrated, or aggressive from their constant confinement and exposure to the elements.
