June 2008

Dear NAVS friend,

As you may know from recent news reports, the Midwest has been ravaged with severe rains and flooding. The NAVS Sanctuary Fund program has been reaching out to offer financial assistance to animal shelters and rescue organizations directly affected by disasters since 1998.

Today, we need your help more than ever. Please take this opportunity to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, and a helping hand to those who cannot stand on their own feet. Please make a monetary donation to the NAVS Sanctuary Fund.

Rest assured, 100% of your fully tax-deductible contribution will be used to help animals in desperate need.

If you know of an animal shelter or rescue organization that has been affected by destructive weather throughout the Midwest, please contact NAVS or call 1-800-888-6287.

Thank you for helping the most innocent victims of these storms.

Sincerely,

The National Anti-Vivisection Society

AHA: Help animals displaced by flood

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Normally I don’t crosspost solicitations for donations, but this email gives some info regarding the current situation in the Midwest…

American Humane, June 2008

Breaking News: American Humane Assists Animals in Flood-Stricken Illinois

Over the weekend, American Humane’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services unit deployed to Adams County, Ill., to help animals affected by the severe flooding in the Midwest. As an area that was overwhelmed by the scope of this crisis, Adams County was in dire need of assistance.

American Humane answered the call by joining forces with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Animal Rescue League of Boston. Together, we are working to find and set up emergency shelter sites for the many animals made homeless in recent days. It’s a collaboration that is allowing the county to keep as many animals as possible fed, sheltered and healthy through the duration of the crisis.

Your donation today will allow us to continue these vital operations and prepare for the inevitable next disaster. In some situations, animals’ survival instinct simply isn’t enough — they desperately need caring donors like you to make our rescue efforts possible.

American Humane Provides Grants to Shelters in Iowa

American Humane’s response in Illinois is the second wave of assistance we’ve provided to communities impacted by Midwest flooding. Last week, we reached out to overwhelmed and underfunded animal shelters in Iowa, extending $12,500 in emergency grants to those hardest hit by the disaster.

The grants are being put to immediate use, keeping hundreds of animals safe during the crisis. For example, the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center was filled with four feet of water and uninhabitable. The money from American Humane helped the facility evacuate and relocate to nearby fairgrounds.

Stay tuned for an update on our progress in Illinois. And in the meantime, please donate! Your support will fund American Humane’s ongoing relief efforts in the Midwest and ensure our readiness for future crises that put animals in harm’s way.

Kinship Circle: NOLA Rescuer Dead. Her Animals Need Help!

ALERT FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE SUPPORTER / PLEASE CROSS-POST:
6/13/08: Katrina/NOLA Rescuer Dead. Her Animals Need Help!

FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE:

We are shocked and dismayed by the untimely death of devoted New Orleans rescuer, Linda Potts. For the last 15 or more years of her life, Linda trapped, rescued and brought hope to homeless animals. Please help Linda’s surviving companion animals…and/or forward this to others. Kinship Circle

ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:

Charlotte Bass, table25 [at] bellsouth.net

Linda Potts, longtime rescuer and resident of New Orleans’ Holy Cross 9th ward neighborhood, was found dead in her gutted home on June 11, 2008. Linda volunteered for ARNO as a feeder/trapper and assisted many other New Orleans area rescue organizations with assistance in the field.

Linda, age 49, lived with her pets in a FEMA trailer next to her gutted home. Her death was officially classified as death from ‘natural causes’ as police report that there was no evidence of foul play. There seems to be conflicting opinions from neighbors — as well as suspect evidence found at the death scene — but the important thing right now is to get Linda’s pets rescued and into foster or permanent homes.

LINDA’S LEFT-BEHIND BABIES… CAN YOU FOSTER OR ADOPT?

Currently five animals are being held at the LA/SPCA and have been transferred in name to ARNO’s foster/adoption program. We thank the LA/SPCA for allowing these pets to be housed for one week at their facilities. It is paramount we move these pets to foster homes quickly, as LA/SPCA and ARNO have zero space at their respective shelters.

Anti-Fur Society: China quake & the animals Newsletter

Subject: China quake & the animals Newsletter

Welcome to the Anti-Fur Society’s first newsletter for the Chinese Animals Group!

THE ANIMALS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

China’s earthquake aftermath has taken the lives of a staggering number of people, estimated to be over 65,000 and over 12 million animals have perished. Countless dogs and cats are homeless, injured, and starving to death. Drinking water is polluted and there is a critical need for water pumps to provide water to animals. Reportedly, there are some 30,000 pet dogs in one province alone. Many of them now homeless. Since the dog cull has been in effect, it is questionable if the government will allow rescue to happen. Nevertheless, rescuers and volunteers are doing all they can to save as many animals as possible or at least offer them some relief amidst so much suffering. There is a desperate need for food for companion animals, and livestock feed, not to mention vaccines and other medication.

Various international agencies are helping in the disaster areas, including Chinese animal organizations which are greatly underfunded. When rescues are over, Chinese animal groups will have to continue helping the animals rescued as a result of this tragedy.

Our group has been working with several groups of animal caring people in Beijing and Shanghai. They dedicate their spare time and whatever little money they have to save abandoned animals. It is based on their recommendation that we are pleased to list here three Chinese animal organizations who are animal caring pioneers, and are also at the front helping earthquake victims. It is in great part, thanks to them, that animals in their areas have experienced care and compassion.

Check them out on “WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP” box.

CHECK US OUT!
