Re: your attempt to denigrate my ethics by implying that I care about non-human animals to the exclusion of human animals – YOU FAIL.

And also, please to read a blog’s comment policy before trolling, mkay?

As per said comment policy, yes, you are banned, so don’t bother. That is, unless you’d like to share with everyone the steps you’re taking to end the genocide in Darfur.

After months of cajoling, the Mr. finally convinced me to join Facebook and Twitter. Both of them! In one morning! Oh, the horras.

My shoulders are going to be tensed up all afternoon. New things, I do not like them. Unless they come in small, furry packages, of course.

housekeeping

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

No, it’s not spring yet, but I’ve been busy with a ton of “virtual” housekeeping chores on the site:

* I spent a good deal of last weekend updating the Get Active! page, which had previously gone neglected since April. The list of activist resources has easily quadrupled in size. Because the list is so huge, I also subdivided the “human rights” category, adding sections for civil rights, elections & voting reform, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights and click-through sites. This is in addition to the animal advocacy, environmental issues and general activist resources categories. No, women’s rights are not animal rights, but I’m a big believer in the intersecting nature of oppressions – and, while this is primarily an animal rights blog, I do encourage readers to speak out against oppression in all its forms.

Whereas the links previously took you straight to the “action center” section on each organization’s website, I parsed them out a bit in order to make browsing easier. Instead of just linking to PETA’s action center, for example, now I link to their main page (should the webmaster should change the URL of any given page, you can at least find your way home), as well as their action center and e-mail subscription management page.

So please, check out the list of resources, and feel free to suggest any links I may have missed!

* Regular readers will notice that I’ve shifted my focus a bit. Whereas I first started easyVegan.info as a place to crosspost action alerts, I’ve been posting more original material as of late, especially pertaining to the marketing (commercial, advertisements, etc.), as well as the intersecting nature of oppressions. I still include links to actions alerts, newsletters and such as part of my near-daily “easyVegan Link Sanctuary,” but I rarely post individual alerts in their entirety. This is a much faster way of working through my email, and frees up some time for me to blog about other things. Which I very much enjoy, I might add.

I’m curious what y’all’s thoughts on this are? How many of you read the link roundups and use them as a jumping off point for taking action? Is a useful tool, or a waste of time that might be better spent? If I offered the “link sanctuaries” via email (in addition to posting them here), would anyone be interested in subscribing? Which do you prefer, action-oriented posts or cultural analysis? Thoughts, comments, points of discussion?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

So I’m back, mostly at least. The surgery went well; the laughing gas and sedatives knocked me on my arse more than anything else. The whole first day I couldn’t keep much of anything down, not even liquids and Vicodin, and so I spent all of Thursday alternating between napping and puking. (A stomach empty save for Dr. Pepper makes for surprisingly interesting vomit. No, for reals.) By Friday my back was seized up from laying around, but I was too dazed to do much of anything else. Same for Saturday. Yesterday I was restless enough that I dragged my but into the office and slogged through my email. Not fun, but at least I got to sit upright for a bit. Yoga felt soooo goood this morning, I almost did it twice.

All in all, the whole experience was not as fun as I’d hoped. I’d had grandiose visions of spending a weekend catching up on Netflix movies, reading a book or two, and just generally milking the sympathy. Not so much. And the caffeine withdrawal (there was a 36 hour stretch where I couldn’t eat *at all*) sure didn’t help matters.

Aside from the four gaping holes in my mouth, I’m good. Good enough to make some lolz, anyways. Here’s a Kaylee series, after she had six teeth removed last March. Her old “owners” sucked ass, but the only thing we can do about that now is love on her and laugh about it as best we can. And edumakate others. So, take your animals to the vet, people, otherwise this is what happens.

lol kaylee - mai teef!

lol kaylee - finders keepers

lol kaylee - post-ops

Such a sweet face, even with those crazy teefs!

loldogs, cute puppy pictures, dentist, I Has a Hotdog

After 15 years (15 years! that’s, like, half my life!) of pissing and moaning, I’m finally getting my wisdom teeth yanked out tomorrow. I have no idea how long I’ll be out of commission, but Monday sounds about right. Of course, I’m probably just being a big whiny tittybaby.

Either way, I’ll see ya when I see ya.

House, that is. Posts will be sporadic to nonexistent (what’s new, right?) for a few weeks while the furbabies and their harried parents get settled in.

ADMIN: easyVegan and the Summer of Adult Responsibilities

2007-07-15 - Jayne & Peedee - 0003 [cropped]

Jayne’s gone swimming

Between the new house (renovations on which are slowly starting to wrap up), the impending move across town, and the new workload I’m trying to take on to pay for it all, spare time for blogging has been tight. So, for the time being, easyVegan will be on a semi-vacation. Not that your trusty blogger will be getting much rest. No siree. I’ll just be sacrificing my metacarpals to my corporate overlords rather than the greater good, at least for the foreseeable future. Sigh.

So what does this mean for easyVegan the blog? Well, I’ll continue to bring you all the rage-inducing action alerts of days past, but rather than create a separate, detailed post for each issue, methinks I’ll post a “link roundup” every day or two instead. This near-daily link dump will consist of (links to) animal rights/welfare and enviro action alerts, petitions, newsletters, carnivals, press releases, and campaign updates (etc., etc.) that have already been published on the internets. I will, however, continue to reprint emails that have not otherwise been reprinted online (the Friday Farm Sanctuary newsletter comes to mind). (And of course, news items via delicious!)

I expect the new setup to continue until at least October, though I have a sneaking suspicion that I just might like it enough to stick with it fur-ever. Hopefully, once I’m all snuggled into the new digs, I can use my free time to write some original content as opposed to re-editing, re-formatting, and re-gurgitating everyone else’s stuff. That’s the plan, anyway.

Questions? Comments? Points of discussion?

Leave your thoughts in the comments.

ADMIN: A note on easyVegan geeky goodness…

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

I meant to announce this a looooong time ago, but managed to procrastinate for what must be a record seven months. Anyway, I started bookmarking news items with delicious back in January, and have grown so fond of it that I’ve also taken to tagging veg*n/AR/enviro newsletters that I find interesting, but not interesting enough to write a whole post on ‘em. (Unless it’s got an action alert or an especially outrageous news story, there’s just not enough time in the day, am I right?)

So, while I used to announce new newsletters via individual blog posts, now I plan on tagging them with delicious instead. What this means for you is that, if you want to know when new issues of UPC’s Poultry Press, COK’s Compassionate Action, or AHA’s Humane Review are available, you’ll either need to join their mailing lists or check out my delicious account on a semi-regular basis. (Newsletters are conveniently tagged with the keyword “newsletter” – hint, hint.)

If you’re interested, there are two ways of keeping current with my delicious bookmarks. Firstly, of course, you can just visit my account here: del.icio.us/easyvegan. And if you’re kinda sorta forgetful like me, there’s even an RSS feed: del.icio.us/rss/easyvegan. Yay!

You can also check the newest entries right here, without clicking away from my lovely pawprinted site design: www.easyvegan.info/virtual-library/. (It updates every time the page is refreshed, and displays – I think – the 25 most recent items. I forget, and am not about to go count.)

The “virtual library” primarily houses two feeds: my latest delicious bookmarks, as well as a random selection of books from my LibraryThing account. Though this by no means represents my entire library (or even a fraction of it!), I started with all my animal rights/animal welfare/animal behavior/environmental books, just for you guys. That’s gotta warm the cockles, right? Again, there are some handy-dandy RSS feeds for the absent-minded or just-plain-curious: a feed for newly-added books; another for new reviews of said books, written by yours truly; and a feed for reviews written by any Library Thing user of books that this Library Thing user owns. Got all that?

If not, some interpages for your perusal:

Animals & Women: Coming Soon to a Plate Near You!

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

As easyVegan.info has gradually gained more readers, I’ve been (pleasantly) surprised to find that “Animals & Women” is one of the site’s most viewed categories – even though it’s only logged in two posts since June! I reckon it’s high time I rectify this matter, dontcha think?

Over the holidays, I spent some time browsing the tubes for images involving women, men, and animals. While most of these center around meat (i.e., women as meat, and “real” men as consumers of meat), other themes emerged as well. I’m still trying to parse these out and develop some distinct, cogent categories, but so far I’ve uploaded 150 photos to Flickr and organized them into the following groups:

* Consuming Women
* Miss Piggy
* Sheena, Queen of the Jungle
* He’ll have a Manwich, please.
* Draining the Lizard
* Totem(en)
* Bucking the Trend
* Supermodels for Animal Rights

The last heading is just a default category for all things PETA, but see if you can guess which themes the others represent. Seriously, humor me here. I’m curious to see how obvious the descriptors are, not to mention how accurate I was in grouping the images based their implied messages.

It’s been a few years since I read Carol Adams’ The Sexual Politics of Meat and The Pornography of Meat, so I should probably brush up on ‘em before continuing with the series. Perhaps Adams has even devised some categories of her own for me to ‘borrow’?

Anywho, until then, feel free to browse through the images I’ve gathered. They’re all in one photoset on Flickr, Animals & Women. They’re further organized by tags, including the phrases listed above. And, if you’d like to suggest another category or theme that I’ve overlooked, lemme know – I’m all ears. Of corn, that is. Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck. I know, I know – day job.

Oh, and contributions of images would be much appreciated as well. I promise to credit with a name and/or linkback, if desired.
