Kinship Circle: ACT NOW To Free Captured Sea Shepherd Crew Members

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

UPDATE, 1/19/08:

Just read on Green Is The New Red that the two captured Sea Shepherd crew members have been released, relatively unharmed.

Here’s Will with the details:

Two anti-whaling activists that have been held hostage by Japanese whalers were released today, after the Australian government intervened. […]

Benjamin Potts, 28, and Giles Lane, 35, were transferred to an Australian vessel, the Oceanic Viking. According to a statement (and the video above), they were roughed up a bit when they boarded but otherwise weren’t harmed.

Gabriel Gonzalez, a spokesman for The Institute of Cetacean Research in Tokyo (the whalers, gotta love the misleading name) told The Telegraph that the two were initially tied up because they might have been carrying bombs or weapons.

“This is a terrorist organisation, let us be clear of that, and if they respond with aggressive tactics, who knows what might happen,” he said.

So let’s get this all straight. Two activists board a ship, with a letter of intent, because the whalers refused to respond to radio communications. Whalers rough them up, tie them up, and then Yasuaki Sasaki, the captain, makes a series of demands, including activists must stop filming the whalers’ activities and not come within 10 nautical miles of the whaling ship.

But the anti-whaling advocates are the terrorists?

Indeed.

w00t! Section 123, 86ed! (with an alert from PCRM)

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Just got the following email from PCRM and am unexpectedly excited about this unexpectedly unexpected news. I thought Section 123 would go the way of AETA for sure. Hey, I’ll take good news wherever I can find it…

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: PCRM Legislative Coordinator Kyle Ash - kash [at] pcrm.org
Date: Jul 12, 2007 12:30 PM
Subject: Legislative Success: Section 123 Removed from Farm Bill

I am writing to share some exciting news: Section 123 has been removed from the Farm Bill! This would not have happened without your help, and we appreciate the efforts of everyone who voiced their concerns about section 123 by calling and e-mailing Congress.

As you may remember, if section 123 had become law it would have weakened food safety and animal welfare policies by invalidating hundreds of state and local laws that provide greater protections than federal laws. Efforts to challenge the way the meat and dairy industries sell, market, and label their products would have been significantly thwarted.

While the success with section 123 is significant, our efforts to improve the Farm Bill continue—and we still need your help. Many of you have already contacted your representative about HR 2720, or FARM 21, a new bill that would be beneficial for farmers wanting to produce healthy foods and for Americans wanting to eat a healthful diet. FARM 21’s subsidy reforms would also free up money for nutrition programs that would enhance every American’s ability to eat a healthy diet. Learn more about HR 2720 and how to contact your representative today.

Thank you so much for your help with section 123. We hope to share more Farm Bill successes with you in the future. Stay tuned for more updates about the Farm Bill and other legislative activities that affect the health of Americans. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at kash [at] pcrm.org.

Best regards,

Kyle Ash

DawnWatch: NY Times on Farm Sanctuary rescue of lamb 7/7/07

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

From: DawnWatch - news [at] dawnwatch.com
Date: Jul 7, 2007 8:02 PM
Subject: DawnWatch: NY Times on Farm Sanctuary rescue of lamb 7/7/07

The Saturday, July 7, New York Times has a delightiful story about Farm Sanctuary. The article is by Kim Severson, headed, “Rounded Up in the City, Then Coddled in Style.” (Pg B5)

Severson describes Farm Sanctuary as “175 acres of vegan nirvana” nestled among vineyards and vegetable stands in the Finger Lakes region.

We read: “The newest New Yorker to arrive is Lucky Lady, a lamb who was found tearing through the Bronx on June 13. Seeing her agricultural tags, the people who saved Lucky Lady concluded that she had escaped from a live animal market where the culinary and cultural value of certain kinds of meat comes from the timeliness and manner of slaughter.”

Lucky Lady is temporarily in isolation under veterinary care. Soon “she will join 750 other animals that at one time or another were destined to become dinner. That includes dozens of chickens that survived Hurricane Katrina, a couple of ducks whose livers were going to become pate de foie gras and 40 pigs, some of which were headed for the slaughterhouse when they were abandoned by a truck driver near Washington.”

Farm Sanctuary’s E-News & Action Alert 06/29/07

Cruelty, Waste and Corruption in Farm Bill Challenged

Farm Sanctuary has partnered with Brighter Green (brightergreen.org/brightergreen.php?id=2) to produce a white paper on the 2007 Farm Bill, a piece of legislation that comes up for debate in Washington, DC every five to seven years. Our white paper challenges the factory farming mentality that has governed U.S. farm policy in recent decades, which subsidizes cruel animal farming systems, while failing to adequately support healthy, sustainable plant-based agriculture. In addition, we are fighting two harmful provisions in the 2007 Farm Bill – a 12 million subsidy for the veal industry and a provision that would undermine the ability of states to outlaw cruel farming systems, as was done last year in Arizona through a citizen’s ballot initiative. Find out how you can help!

Discarded Dairy Calves Bounce Back from Neglect

Billy’s the joker. Casey’s laid back. And Phoenix is a real sweetheart—though a little on the stubborn side. It’s sobering to think that just a few scant months ago they could’ve all been described using the same term: dead.

But these three calves got a shot at life, thanks to a Farm Sanctuary investigator who pulled them off of a truck bound for a slaughterhouse. The calves are all survivors of an industrialized dairy farm, discarded less than 24 hours after their birth. At our California Shelter, Billy, Casey and Phoenix got the medical attention they needed to become thriving, healthy boys. Read more.

Fun on the Farm With The Mountain Goats

Music lovers from across the country and overseas traveled to the New York Shelter on June 16 and 17 for ZOOP! The benefit concert, featuring John Darnielle and Peter Hughes of The Mountain Goats and Perry Wright of The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers, certainly rocked the rafters of our People Barn! Not only were thousands of dollars raised, but the 200 fans in attendance also witnessed the kind of life all farm animals should have. Read more and view event photos.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, we have worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming.
