The Animals Voice: Stop The U.S. Government From Shooting Thousands of Wild Horses

Subject: Stop The U.S. Government From Shooting Thousands of Wild Horses

Equine Plight | Proposed Wild Horse Shoot

The U.S. Government is considering a plan to shoot thousands of wild horses

We’ve been battling the issue for years: saving wild horses from death in one form or another. We are asked to believe they are starving to death on the public range and need to be managed and controlled for their own good. We are asked to believe they are dying of thirst due to drought conditions in the West (despite that cattle have no trouble finding water sources). We are asked to believe wild horses are competing with “native” wildlife or endangered species and must be removed from public lands to protect the ecosystems.

And now we’re being asked to believe that the high cost of taking care of unadoptable wild horses is just more than the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) can bear (in 2008, less than 5% of BLM’s wild horse and burro program budget was allocated to herd management on the range, with the remaining 95% allocated to captures, holding and placement).

But these have never been the core root of the wild horse problem. Unfortunately, the above reasons HAVE been the truths even wild horse defenders have come to believe — but they are not. They aren’t even close to the truth.

Here’s the truth in a nutshell: Only so many hooved animal are allowed on public land per acre. Wildlife species like deer, antelope, elk, etc., are allowed to remain on public lands because preserving and killing them (they’re often preserved so they CAN be killed) makes somebody somewhere lots of money; in this case, the U.S. government (hunting license fees, wildlife management programs, etc.). Cattle, sheep and other domestic livestock are allowed to remain on public lands because raising them there is cheap for livestock growers and it makes the U.S. government money in the form of public lands grazing fees, not to mention that it makes livestock growers money on livestock sales.

But the wild horse doesn’t make anyone anywhere a single dime to remain on public lands — and since there’s only so much room on public land for so many hooved animals, the ones not making money are to be removed — under any excuse the government can find to justify the removals.

Welcome to the Anti-Fur Society’s first newsletter for the Chinese Animals Group!

THE ANIMALS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

China’s earthquake aftermath has taken the lives of a staggering number of people, estimated to be over 65,000 and over 12 million animals have perished. Countless dogs and cats are homeless, injured, and starving to death. Drinking water is polluted and there is a critical need for water pumps to provide water to animals. Reportedly, there are some 30,000 pet dogs in one province alone. Many of them now homeless. Since the dog cull has been in effect, it is questionable if the government will allow rescue to happen. Nevertheless, rescuers and volunteers are doing all they can to save as many animals as possible or at least offer them some relief amidst so much suffering. There is a desperate need for food for companion animals, and livestock feed, not to mention vaccines and other medication.

Various international agencies are helping in the disaster areas, including Chinese animal organizations which are greatly underfunded. When rescues are over, Chinese animal groups will have to continue helping the animals rescued as a result of this tragedy.

Our group has been working with several groups of animal caring people in Beijing and Shanghai. They dedicate their spare time and whatever little money they have to save abandoned animals. It is based on their recommendation that we are pleased to list here three Chinese animal organizations who are animal caring pioneers, and are also at the front helping earthquake victims. It is in great part, thanks to them, that animals in their areas have experienced care and compassion.

Check them out on “WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP” box.

CHECK US OUT!

Kinship Circle: May Digest, Parts 1 & 2

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

If you decide to take action on issue #6, “Stop Korea From Legalizing Dog Meat”, please edit out the third paragraph in the sample letter. In particular, I take objection to the following sentence: “South Korea does not want to be seen by modern nations as a culture that is backward, barbaric or uncivilized…” Eating dog meat is no more uncivilized than eating cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, lamb, etc. All are sentient beings capable of feeling joy, sorrow and pain. However, to vilify an entire culture for eating an animal we regard as special is inherently racist; in the United States, we treat “food” animals no better. The push should be towards a vegetarian (or, better yet, vegan!) diet for all, not towards outlawing specific species of meat that we find objectionable due to cultural reasons.

And do I really need to explain how offensive the “modern nations” remark is?

Subject: Lowe’s Insists on Selling Cruelty; ‘Modified’ Glue Traps Are Repackaged Torture

In response to your calls and e-mails, Lowe’s has issued a statement claiming that the company will “only carry the products [glue traps] that contain Eugenol [clove oil], which is an anesthetic.” Don’t be fooled! Such “modified” glue traps are a shameless attempt to dupe consumers. They are still glue traps that kill animals slowly through starvation and dehydration. These glue traps show absolutely no evidence of reducing animal suffering. In fact, they cause as much suffering as—if not more than—standard traps.

Please continue to push Lowe’s to stop carrying all glue traps. Please call and fax Lowe’s today and tell the company that caring consumers strongly oppose the use of glue traps and will not patronize Lowe’s until the company removes all glue traps from its stores and issues a statement vowing never to sell them again.

“The commercial kangaroo kill quota for 2007 is just over 3.6 million kangaroos. Some skins and meat products are used domestically (60 to 70% of kangaroo meat goes into the Australian pet food market), and the rest is exported to 55 countries as leather or meat for human consumption. Kangaroo leather is widely used in the manufacture of sporting shoes and gloves as well as in dress shoes and accessory manufacture.”
