Product Review: Ozera Silicone Cupcake Liners

five out of five stars

(Full disclosure: I received a free product from the manufacturer in exchange for an honest review.)

These silicone cupcake liners are one of the niftiest baking items I’ve tried in quite some time! Not only do they cut down on kitchen waste by eliminating the need for disposable paper cups – but they also just plain work better.

After receiving a dozen liners from Ozera for review, I whipped up a batch of Whole Wheat Raisin Bran Muffins from Whole Grain Vegan Baking (Tami Noyes & Celine Steen, 2013). I wanted to do a little side-by-side comparison, so I divided the muffins evenly between old style paper baking cups and Ozera’s silicone cups. The bake time and quality was the same for all the muffins, but I found that those in the silicone cups came out of the liners much more easily, without a whole lot of crumbling around the edges, like you’re apt to see with paper cups. The end result was much tidier, without any wasted muffin crumbs.

And because the silicone liner is less permeable than paper, you can rest your baked goods on paper napkins without leaving unsightly grease stains. Bonus points for being able to handle them without getting your hands dirty!

The silicone liners are also quite easy to clean: you can either hand wash them (not terribly difficult, considering how little residue is left behind) or simply pop them in the dishwasher. According to the manufacturer, these are dishwasher-, oven-, microwave-, and freezer-safe. (I haven’t yet, but I can’t wait to make a batch of vegan peanut butter cups with these bad girls. Google it!)

One set features three each of the following colors: green, yellow, blue, and pink, resulting in a rather good-looking and varied selection. The colors are deep and vibrant, something you can’t usually say about paper cups.

The only downside is retrieving them after a potluck or party; your friends won’t want to give them back!
