API: Take Action for Circus Animals in 2007

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

Via the Animal Protection Institute:

Take Action for Circus Animals in 2007

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus has just launched its 137th edition and API is calling on concerned animal advocates across the country to continue to work together this year to bring an end to the cruelties that circus animals are forced to endure. Examples abound, including prolonged chaining and the use of bullhooks on elephants. Also, the 137th edition features 12 rare Royal Bengal and white tigers, who will spend most of the year inside small travel cages.

Efforts you make to educate people that using animals in circuses is an unnecessary and inhumane practice, harmful to both the animals and the public, make an important difference!

Please check out the list below for ways in which you can take action, and plan to put some or all of them into practice in 2007!

Find out more here.

Friends of Animals: The Saddest Show on Earth (Protest in Bridgeport, CT)

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Via Friends of Animals:

Elephants, tigers and other animals in circuses never have a day off. Their spirits are broken; their lives are spent in demeaning performances – robbing them of their freedom and dignity.

Animals don’t do headstands or jump through fire because they enjoy it; they do it because they fear punishment. Circuses with animal acts are not decent family entertainment.

Baby elephants are removed from their mothers and forced into a lifetime of performing. As the families of these animals are broken, so are their spirits. Elephants have their legs chained and live in cramped quarters 12 months a year.

Let’s stop teaching children that they should applaud animal slavery, abusive confinement, training, and commercial exploitation.

Wild animals belong in their homelands, not under the bright lights of a circus ring.

Please show that you respect animals – Boycott Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus!

Church Promotes Cole Brothers Circus – Please Call/Write

Monday, September 11th, 2006

The following was posted on the Animal Advocacy Yahoo Group:

Church Promotes Cole Brothers Circus – Pls Call/Write

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY – contact info contained in the message below.

Everyone, please call the church that is being bamboozled into promoting the circus as a “family value.” Politely tell them that circuses represent cruelty, slavery and poaching animals from the wild. For more information about circuses, visit: http://www.circuses.com/

For words to use in your comments, go to: http://www.circuses.com/educators.asp

Just when we thought that the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus would no longer appear in the Washington area, we have discovered that it is returning, this time under the name of Cole Brothers Circus of the Stars.

We had also thought that Cole Brothers no longer exploited elephants, but the circus advertises that Tina and Jewel are back, along with camels. It appears that circuses no longer perform on Fairfax County (D.C. metro area) public land, but this one is appearing at a church, The Community Church in Ashburn, Virginia, from Thursday, Sept. 14 thru Sunday, Sept. 17.

The link below will allow you to contact church officials to educate them about the miserable lives of circus animals. If you wish to call the church, the number is 703-450-2152.

DawnWatch: Exceptional circus article in Orange County Weekly — 8/3/06

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: DawnWatch – news [at] dawnwatch.com
Date: Aug 4, 2006 8:35 PM
Subject: DawnWatch: Exceptional circus article in Orange County Weekly — 8/3/06

The current Orange County Weekly (August 3 edition) circulated throughout Orange County in California, has a wonderful expose of the circus, by Steve Lowery. The page has a large photo of an elephant walking with a trainer who is brandishing a bullhook. The photo caption is, “Don’t make me hurt you.” The article is headed, “Dumbo and Dumber. Handlers give circus Elephants the bullhook.”

Lowery’s article opens:

“The elephants feed on the dried grass and cover themselves with dirt provided by handlers, oblivious to the people watching from behind a chain link enclosure on the Arrowhead Pond parking lot. It’s an hour before the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’s opens for a run that continues through this weekend, and the spectators look on quietly, awestruck, few seeming to notice the handlers exchanging their shovels and brooms for short sticks with heavy metal hooks at one end.

“The handlers head back toward the elephants, the first to reach his animal moving the stick quickly, subtly. The movement, all of a few inches, isn’t exactly menacing; rather, it suggests an intention to menace, and almost immediately the Asian female begins the process of lowering her girth down on one rear leg, then another.

“The scenario is played out again by the next handler–and the next–in front of a crowd that doesn’t seem to notice the hooks, perhaps because they are handled so deftly or perhaps because the sticks are usually black and easily hidden when held against a handler’s black pants.

DawnWatch: USA Today front page on Ringling Bros 6/7/06

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: DawnWatch – news [at] dawnwatch [dot] com
Date: Jun 7, 2006 3:10 PM
Subject: DawnWatch: USA Today front page on Ringling Bros 6/7/06

The Wednesday, June 7 edition of USA Today has a big, light, front page story about changes at the Ringling Bros circus, headed, “Circus gets a makeover; In Hip-hop, a ringmistress Out Lions, tigers, the 3 rings.”

Ringling has changed the style of its circus, dropping the three rings. The article tells us:

“Circuses of all sizes and stripes are straining to meet the fractured attention spans of the iPod generation. They’re also reflecting the influence of Cirque du Soleil, the hugely popular Canadian acrobatic troupe that is expected to draw 7 million people this year with its modern mix of music, street art and multicultural flair.”

The influence of Cirque du Soleil, which uses no wild performers, is welcome news.

We read, “The new show has elephants, but it does not have the big cats — lions and tigers — associated with a Ringling circus.”

AOL Poll About Circus Elephants

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

Please take a moment to vote in this poll at AOL News:

What’s your opinion on the circus’ treatment of elephants?
It’s fine
It’s abusive

There are almost 55,000 votes in, and the AR side is losing, 47 to 53%, so get out the vote!

There’s also a related article up there, “Ringling Bros. Battles to Keep Elephants,” which gives some background on the issue.
