2013-09-20 - The Cheesy Vegan - 0008

When I first laid eyes on John Schlimm’s The Cheesy Vegan: More Than 125 Plant-Based Recipes for Indulging in the World’s Ultimate Comfort Food via an Amazon recommendation, I nearly fell out of my seat. It’s like they read my mind! An entire cookbook devoted to vegan cheese (pizza, pasta, tacos, macaroni and cheese!); could a more perfect thing exist? (A: No. No, it cannot.)

Luckily, the folks at Da Capo Press were kind enough to send me a copy for review. Yay! And in the interest of not burying the lede, let me just say that they also offered a second copy for me to give away. Yay for you! Head on over to fuck yeah vegan pizza for details and to enter.

Anyway, between Vegan MoFo and Julie Hasson’s Vegan Pizza (which I’m currently also reviewing), I haven’t had much chance to cook from it yet. BUT it does look quite promising. Wait, that’s an understatement. Amazing. It looks amazing.

In addition to cheesy sammies and cheesy pizzas and cheesy pasta dishes and cheesy soups and sides (and an entire chapter of mac & cheese! ONE WHOLE CHAPTER!), there are also a ton of recipes for homemade cheeses: Cheddar. Mozzarella. Brie. Swiss. Feta. Ricotta. Blue. Jack. Muenster. American. You name it! Better yet, they all look pretty easy to make: just blend and chill. I’ve been on the fence about whether I should give Artisan Vegan Cheese a try, since some of the recipes sound like alchemy or witchcraft or rocket science. (Take your pick!) But these actually look like recipes I can pull off! (*knock on wood*)

For those of you who fancy gorgeous, glossy, full-color photos, The Cheesy Vegan will not disappoint. Nearly every page is dripping and oozing with cheesy orange and white goodness. You might find yourself overcome with a sudden and powerful urge to lick the gourmet food photos. This is one handsome book.

Better still, few of the recipes require unusual or hard-to-find ingredients. The weirdest item I spotted was instant flour (Wondra), which Schlimm assures us is readily available in most grocery stores. That said, you will need plenty of agar flakes for the diy cheese recipes – and agar is rather pricey.

Some of the equipment is a bit non-standard, especially for my kitchen; I only own a few odd ramekins (for my wannabe-gourmet food photography!), and I’m not even sure what a jelly roll pan looks like. The Pizza Mountain Pie, in particular, requires a pie iron, which I don’t think even exists in my parents’ attic (and you can find one of nearly every countertop kitchen appliance there!). But, with the exception of the pie iron (and requisite campfire!), many of these items are easily improvised.

I especially appreciate the do-it-yourself cheese recipes, which is a nice way of keeping costs down. It’s also super-convenient for those of us who don’t have easy access to alternative/natural foods stores. Overall, I’d say that most of the recipes are moderately difficult at worst, but of course home cheesemaking complicates things a bit and will require additional planning. The good thing is that you don’t have to make the cheeses from scratch if you don’t want to – Schlimm allows for plenty of flexibility in the recipes.

Just see for yourself! Reprinted below (and with the publisher’s permission) is a recipe for Flying Buffalo Pizza (page 177, for those playing along at home).

Enjoy, and stay cheesy! And vegan!

Going to the drive-in!

2013-06-26 - Going to the Drive-In! - 0008

Rennie wanted to play fetch in the minivan. Silly rabbit!
——————————

Rennie got her second chance at accompanying us to the drive-in this week – her first one being some time around 2005-2006. That first time (which was possibly still during her puppyhood) she was awful, barking at the other patrons and claiming her territory (the Intrepid! we got rid of that thing last summer! memories.) and stuff. We had to throw a towel over her crate so she couldn’t see. Ditto Ralphie and Peedee. For a long time Kaylee was the only dog well-behaved enough to go with us, and then Mags joined the party last summer. (A development with which Kaylee was none too happy.)

With Kaylee gone, Rennie got another shot and she was AWESOME. She only barked once during intermission, and that was when Shane left to go to the bathroom, so she was already excitable and a little on edge. And the second time (we went twice in one week – World War Z & Now You See Me and This is the End & The Purge – and consequently, I’m still catching up on my sleep), she barked at the end of the feature. I think she’d fallen asleep in the back of the van and with the slamming of a car door, awoke in a strange-to-her place. So it wasn’t so much annoying as silly adorable.

Anyway, I think we found the perfect drive-in pair: they get on well, are mostly quiet, and don’t cause too much trouble. And Rennie’s presence helps to take some of the edge off Kaylee’s absence. This week was our first trip out since she passed – the first time in nearly a year, actually – and I was both anticipating and dreading it.

Now if only I could get through a yoga session without busting into tears.

2013-06-26 - Going to the Drive-In! - 0021

Mags is not amused.
——————————

In other news, Mags got a package in the mail today! Girl’s gonna be super-bummed when she realizes that it’s an inflatable pool for water therapy. I predict a looooong summer for one little doggeh.

P.S. Today’s Vegan Pizza Day, and yes – I AM HOLDING A CONTEST ON TUMBLR. Check it.

In anticipation of the upcoming July 2nd paperback release, Penguin generously provided me with two copies of The Lucky Ones: My Passionate Fight for Farm Animals, written by Woodstock FAS founder Jenny Brown and fellow vegan Gretchen Primack – one to review, and one to give away!

To enter to win a copy for your very own self, simply answer this question in the comments: if you could visit Woodstock tomorrow, which of the residents – human or non – would you most like to meet? (Hint: there’s a partial list available on Woodstock’s website.) Or just tell me why you need this book! I’m not fussy.

For a second entry, tweet this message and leave a second comment telling me you did so.

A Five-Hankie Review

five out of five stars

(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review at the publisher’s invitation.)

“I often envision a giant protective bubble over our property, and inside it a place where everything is right in the world, the way we want it to be. Animals roam free, living happy and peaceful lives the way they should. They are free to be themselves, among friends and, in some cases, family. There is no fear of harm, no want for food or water, warmth or shelter. They have everything they need. They are loved, and treated with respect and compassion, until their dying moments in our arms, when they are wet from our tears. We coexist with them, never considering ourselves superior or their ‘owners.’ We don’t use them as commodities or exploit them in any way. They are our friends. Beloved friends. They owe us nothing. But what they do give, unconsciously, is the greatest asset to our work. They are ambassadors for all others like them, showing humans that other animals are not mere automatons.” (pp. 223-224)

As a teenager slinging burgers at the Doublemeat Palace in Sunnydale – errr, serving burgers at a Louisville McDonald’s; sorry, I got my superheroes confused for a second there! – Jenny Brown never imagined that she’d one day devote her life to rescuing the very animals she enjoyed sandwiched between two slices of bread – let alone give up a promising career in film to do so.

Along with her husband, film editor Doug Abel, Brown founded Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in 2004; their wedding ceremony served as the nonprofit’s inaugural fundraiser. Located just outside of Woodstock, New York, in the neighboring town of Willow, Woodstock FAS is home to over 200 rescued “farm” animals, including runaway cow Kayli, who literally escaped death in a New York City “live kill” market when she bolted for it through the city streets; the infamous goat Albie who, like his guardian, sports one “fake” leg; and Petunia, a “Thanksgiving” turkey purchased as a gag. They are the lucky ones – a precious few of the ten billion animals enslaved and slaughtered for meat, dairy, and eggs every year in the United States alone (not counting fishes and associated “bycatch”) who are fortunate enough to find sanctuary with human allies.

Eat to the Beat: A Nada Moo Giveaway & Van Halen

Monday, October 15th, 2012

The song: “Ice Cream Man” by Van Halen (lyrics)

The foodstuff: Chocolate Nada Moo Ice Cream

The connection: I’m like the ice cream, but better: I’m giving it away for free!

One of the perks of moderating pizza and ice cream blogs on tumblr is discovering all these awesome new vegan products and restaurants, including many overseas that I wouldn’t otherwise know about. (I’ve even landed on a few companies’ pr mailing lists!) Nada Moo is one of several newish vegan ice cream brands that people have been raving about – and they were nice enough to send me a packet full of free product coupons: some for me, and some for you!

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many stores in the Kansas City area that stock Nada Moo – and those that do are an hour’s drive from my house! (It’s my fault for moving to the middle of nowhere! The downside of misanthropy.) The husband drives past the general vicinity on his way to and fro work … but he only goes into the office once a week, if that. The window is small, my friends.

The point of my story? So far we’ve only been able to find “Gotta Do Chocolate” locally; we’re still on the lookout for one of the other flavors. If and when I find it, I’ll report back!

2012-08-17 - Chocolate NadaMoo - 0023

On the upside, the chocolate Nada Moo is delicious. (If I have to use the remainder of my coupons on chocolate Nada Moo, I’ll be only slightly disappointed. Two words: Java Crunch!) I’ve come to love coconut milk ice cream even more than the soy-based stuff (with the exception of Green Tea So Delicious with coconut milk – the two flavors don’t play nice together), and Nada Moo is no exception. The chocolate flavor is surprisingly subtle, but smooth; and the coconut milk is a nice complement. I downed the pint in just a few sittings. What can I say, I loves my ice creams!

Now for the giveaway portion of this post! Two lucky winners will receive a coupon for a free pint of Nada Moo ice cream, as well as coupon for $1.00 off a pint.

The coupons don’t have an expiration date – so if frozen desserts during the cold weather months isn’t your thing, you can always hold onto them until next June! (Though I posit that apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream can be enjoyed year-round.)

To enter to win, visit Nada Moo’s website and leave a comment on this post telling us which flavor of Nada Moo you’d like to try. Or just describe your most favorite Vegan MoFo 2012 moment to date. I’m not fussy. Just leave a comment to win!

For an extra entry, tweet a link to this contest and then leave a second comment with a link to said tweet. For example: “Enter to win a #free pint of @NadaMoo #vegan #icecream now thru 10/22! http://bit.ly/OZUeIT Happy #VeganMoFo!”

The fine print:

  • Due to product availability, this contest is only open to residents of the United States.
  • When commenting, please leave a valid email address so that I can contact you if you’re the winner. (Don’t worry, your email addy won’t be displayed or shared – your info is safe with me!)
  • The contest closes next Monday, October 22 at 8PM US Central time. The winner will be chosen randomly and has 72 hours to respond, after which time another winner will be chosen.
  • Good luck!

    2012-08-17 - Ice Cream Cone - 0003

Oh, and file under “things I learned while writing this post”: Nada Moo has some seriously ridiculous ice cream recipes on its website. S’mores Ice Cream Sandwiches. NadaMoo Neapolitan. Chocolate Ice Cream Pretzel Squares with Peanut Butter Caramel Swirl. I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START.

    Update: …and the winners are:

    null

Jennifer M. and Sara P., both mint people. Check your email, winners!

    Thanks to everyone for playing!

FYI: I’m also giving away some free Tofutti ice cream over on tumblr. A second chance to win, yay! Now through 10/29.

So Delicious Vegan Ice Cream Giveaway!

    Sunday, October 7th, 2012

    2012-08-17 - So Delicious Turtle Trails - 0008

FYI: I’m giving away some So Delicious ice cream and t-shirts over on fuck yeah vegan ice cream! Two lucky winners will get a coupon for a free pint of So Delicious (max value $11! that’s some expensive ice cream!) as well as a So Delicious tee. Head on over to tumblr for the details. As always, a tumblr account isn’t necessary to enter. You have until next Friday, October 12 at 8PM US Central time to enter!

Pictured above are a few scoops of Turtle Trails that I bought with the VIP Coupon from the nice peeps at So Delicious. Why didn’t anyone tell me that this flavor is so delish? Growing up allergic to milk, I’m really only hip to the flavors that have self-evident names: Raspberry Swirl. Mocha Almond Fudge. Wild Berry Supreme. But these whimsically titled flavors? I CAN’T EVEN.

With a little help from Luna & Larry & the nice folks at Coconut Bliss, I’m giving away a free pint of ice cream, along with some assorted Coconut Bliss swag, over on the fuck yeah vegan ice cream tumblog. Enter here! The contest closes next Wednesday night, so you have plenty of time. But you should go do it now ’cause we all know how forgetful you are!

    ——————————

Enter to win a Tofutti Cutie Bear & a coupon for a free pint of ice cream (or vegan drumsticks! whatever your pleasure!) over on fuck yeah vegan ice cream!

Unlike the pizza blog – where I’m afraid every 3rd comment will be a defensive omnivore telling me that “vegans can’t eat pizza because pizza has cheese” – Disqus comments are enabled, so you don’t need a tumblr account to enter. Yay! It’s open until next Tuesday, August 7th (primary day in Missouri!), so get to it.

This is the first of many giveaways planned for fyvic, as we ring out the summer. Follow along for more!

    Saturday, June 30th, 2012

    Happy Vegan Pizza Day, y’all!

We celebrated with not one, but two vegan pies:

    2012-06-30 - French Fry Pizza - 0011

#1 – A french fry pizza with cheddar Daiya cheese and thin-cut fries. It’s basically this recipe, but with thinner fries and slightly less cheese.

    2012-06-30 - Tofu Scramble Breakfast Pizza - 0007

#2 – A breakfast pizza with garlic sauce, scrambled tofu & veggies, and cheddar Daiya cheese. Recipe coming soon! here! The recipe is here!

Don’t forget to share photos of your Vegan Pizza Day eats @ fuck yeah vegan pizza for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to the vegan store of your choice. The contest is open internationally and you have until Monday night. Vegan pizza for all the peoples!

Vegan Pizza Day Giveaway @ fuck yeah vegan pizza!

    Friday, June 29th, 2012

Happy Vegan Pizza Day, y’all! Well, VPD doesn’t technically begin for another nine hours, but we’re celebrating all weekend long at fuck yeah vegan pizza. (And at the Garbato-Brady household. I just polished off a slice of leftover za while writing this post. True story!)

The festivities include a shiny new contest! From now through Monday night, send us a pic of your Vegan Pizza Day (or Weekened! we don’t care!) eats for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to the vegan store of your choice. It’s that easy!

Deets here. The giveaway is hosted tumblr, but you don’t need a tumblr account to enter! And it’s international! Vegan pizza for everyone!

    2012-06-23 - Assorted Vegan Pizza - 0023

Saturday Night is Pizza Night! Pie #1 = cheddar Daiya cheese, Lightlife Smart Pepperoni, and black olives. Pie #2 is topped with vegan mac n’ cheese – specifically, the “Mac Daddy” recipe from Veganomicon. The dough didn’t quite rise enough, but the pizzas are still delicious.

Too bad Shane wasn’t home to try ‘em – he had to take Jayne to the animal e.r. after she was bit by a woodchuck she managed to corner in the yard. She’s had all her shots, so she’ll be okay, but he tore a decent-sized hole in her chest.

Of course this all happened just as the pies were going in the oven. Jayne, your timing.

People! I’m giving away a copy of Jo Stepaniak’s The Nutritional Yeast Cookbook over on tumblr! There are three ways to win, and you don’t need to have a tumblr account to enter. Click on over for the deets. You have until next Monday morning, so get to it.

ALL THE NOOCH COULD BE YOURS.*

    * Helpful hint: if you use a ton of the stuff like moi, order nutritional yeast online by the pound for extra savings and guaranteed availability. Those dinky bulk bins at Whole Foods only hold a fraction of the nooch I buy in one order!

    French Fry Pizza!

    Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

It HAD TO HAPPEN, people! I’m just amazed that it didn’t happen sooner.

    2012-02-11 - French Fry Pizza - 0009

    2012-02-26 - French Fry Pizza (Both) - 0005

    2012-02-26 - Baked French Fry Pizza - 0005

And yes, it’s every bit as tasty and cheesy and carbalicious as it looks!

Anyway, you can check out the recipe here. It’s pretty simple, really: basically just red sauce, vegan cheddar cheese, and french fries on your favorite pizza crust. I experimented with some different prep methods on the french fries – frozen vs. half-baked vs. deep-fried – and am happy to report that they’re all winners.

In other news, I’m giving away five coupons good for free Lightlife products over on fuck yeah vegan pizza. You have until Sunday morning to enter, and need not have a tumblr account, so get to it! Free stuff!

    Vegan Junk Food Giveaway!

    Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Wanna win a copy of this awesome cookbook?

Vegan Junk Food by Lane Gold (2011)

OF COURSE YOU DO, IT’S COVER-TO-COVER VEGAN JUNK FOOD!

The nice people at Adams Media sent me three copies of Lane Gold’s Vegan Junk Food, one for me and two for you. Enter for your chance to win a copy over on fuck yeah vegan pizza! Since I’m shipping these myself, the contest is open internationally. Don’t say I never did anything for you, Australia!

By the by, I’ve only been able to try one recipe out so far, but it’s a doozy: Pesto Chicken Pizza with Creamy Garlic Sauce.

    2012-02-18 - Chik'n Pesto & French Fry Pizzas - 0009

Gold’s pesto is the besto, and the garlic sauce – made out of pureed white beans – is reminiscent of garlicky mashed potatoes. Super-delish, I could definitely see myself whipping up a batch to eat on its own.

Did I mention that Gold devotes an entire chapter to pizza and bread? MY KIND OF COOKBOOK! No ice cream, but that’s alright; I already own two ice cream books as it is. Although, I would love love love to see someone veganize Ben & Jerry’s flavors; Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night Snack, with the chocolate-covered potato chips, is the stuff that dreams are made of. Much like donkey semen.

you are what you eat (and I am a pizza!)

    Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Another pizza roundup, because it’s been entirely too long since the last one!

The Vegan Pizza Day That Was Giveaway!

    2012-01-21 - Bowl of Sexy - 0007 [with text]

Hey friends! Do you love pizza? Of course you do! Now through Monday afternoon, take a pic of your vegan pizza and share it with us at fuck yeah vegan pizza for a chance to win one of three prize packages stuffed with goodies from Tofurky, Daiya, Lightlife, Gardein, Nasoya, Tofutti, Field Roast, Bob’s Red Mill, and Upton’s Naturals (for US & Canadian readers) or a ginormous box of vegan meats and cheeses from Redwood Foods (for mainland UK residents).

Even if you lose the giveaway, you still win at life! (‘Cause you got to make and share pizza, duh!)

    (Too much shameless self-promotion? Never!)

I am a Pizza, by Charlotte Diamond

So I was searching for music for a pizza mix tape (NO I SHIT YOU NOT) and found this video on the youtubes. I’ve listened to it at least a dozen times now and the lyrics are stuck all up in my head. I sang it to Peedee and O-Ren during our afternoon walk in the park, but I don’t think they enjoyed it. Whatever, they’re dogs, they eat poo. Anyway it’s dope and you should totally give it a listen so that it sticks in your noggin too. Then I won’t be the only weirdo wandering the streets yelling “I AM A PIZZA!” at the top of her lungs.

    Cheesy Penne Pizza

    2011-12-19 - Leftover Penne Pizza - 0003

With mozzarella Daiya, sauteed carrots, mushrooms, garlic and tomatoes, and baked penne pasta, all on a fluffy white pizza crust. I have yet to write up a recipe, but basically you just make up a dish of your favorite oven-baked pasta and set aside a few cups (three? four?) for the pizza prior to baking it. (Two meals in one!) Layer it on top of some red sauce, top with a lil’ extra cheese, and bake the pizza as you would normally. Nom!

    Extra-Easy Vegan Bisquick Cheese Pizza

    2011-12-17 - Basic Bisquick Pizza - 0002

Aside from using store-bought bread, this Bisquick pizza crust is about as easy as it gets! Because it doesn’t contain any yeast, you don’t need to let the dough rise at all. (Pizza in a pinch, anyone?!?) It also makes for a pretty foolproof thin crust recipe – what you see is what you get! Quick and yummy, and super-useful for those nights when you’re craving pizza but are in too of much of a hurry to make a proper dough. Definitely a keeper!

Friday Food (on a Thursday Holiday): Season Finale!

    Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Friday Food…on a Thursday, you ask? Yes, ma’am! I shall be too busy chowing down on frozen pizza and pie – not to mention catching up on The Walking Dead – to bother with a “real” post today. And it’s the veganmofo Friday Food Season Finale, at that. How exciting!

(Seriously, the husband and I are opting/lazing out of the traditional Tofurky and mashed potato feast this year. But feel free to visit ghosts of meals past, mkay? See, e.g., 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006.)

Whether you choose to observe the holiday or not, may your Thanksgiving day be a gentle one, friends.

    Friday, November 19th, 2010

Another week, another veganmofo wrap-up! Entering the home stretch, I cannot adequately express the sense of relief that comes from having started my mofo blogging a month in advance. Because, lemme tell you something – I’m 26.5 posts down with 3.5 left to go (the .5 being a book review that’s 99% finished, but just needs a quick spit & shine before publication), and I am forking exhausted. As in, ready for an 18-hour nap followed by a week-long vacation. And I haven’t even done that much cooking!

    2010-09-20 - Kelly's Last AM (Kelly's Cam) - 0006

Miss Hash Brown – my parents’ beagle/terrier mix-breed dog-kid – tries to sweet-talk me into sharing a piece of my sun-dried tomato bagel with her. And by “talk” I mean “kiss.”
Needless to say, she had me at *sad eyes*.

It took me a good six hours, but I finally finished working through this year’s veganmofo blogroll earlier this week. Everything looks so nice and neat and sorted now! Of course, this means that I have even more Friday Food to share with y’all! Enjoy the links, and try not to drool on your keyboard or, worse yet, lick your monitor (it’s not real, it’s just an illusion!).

Before we get started, though, I have got to direct you to the following blogs – or, more to the point, blog titles, which tickled me every shade of pink whilst browsing through them. Most are rooted in pop culture, which is totally my thing.
