Last night’s (January 30, 2007) episode of Boston Legal was wonderful for animals! The show is a bizarre kind of comedy, but even in that context serious points about cosmetic testing on animals were made. We also got to hear about the dark side of horse racing — terrific timing given Barbaro’s passing this week.

I will summarize, below, the parts of the plot that had to do with the animal testing scenario, and transcribe some small sections.

Bella, who owns a cosmetic company, comes into the law firm covered in blue paint. She says she has been attacked by “vicious terrorists.” Given that it has become common to seriously try and pin the terrorist label on animal rights activists, it is a pleasant relief to hear the label used in a way that is clearly meant to be hyperbolic, by a character who seems unbalanced and says she has “had enough of these psycho animal loving Liberal thugs.”

We learn that the DA has picked up a Mr. Steinkellner, head of COTA, the Coalition Opposed to Testing on Animals. Bella’s lawyers tell her “While he is officially denying that COTA painted you blue, the Coalition condones and supports it, thinks you look good in a primary color, and is in fact calling for a second coat.”

Thanks to Marsha Rubin for this tip about tonight’s (1/30/07) episode of Boston Legal, on ABC at 10pm (Check local listings):

“An irate Denny thunders to Bella’s aid when she is attacked by animal-rights activists, but the conflict becomes personal when his ex-girlfriend–Bella’s diminutive daughter Bethany–represents the protestors.”

(Note to those outside the US — I send this to my whole list, not just US, knowing that though the air dates differ, those in other countries also see Boston Legal and may wish to keep an eye out for this episode.)

Boston Legal has a message board where you can comment, here.

It would be nice to see lots of pro-AR comments up there.

I have no idea how this episode will go. We can be sure Denny Crane will be obnoxious, as his character always is (and generally funny too). But Boston Crane has a good history on animal issues, having done a superb job in 2005 of calling attention to the government’s Mad Cow cover up. (Click here for a detailed DawnWatch alert on that episode.) Animal rights issues might get a decent hearing in tonight’s episode — or not — we’ll see.

Consuming Women, No. 1.1

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

My very first “Consuming Women” post – way back in June – was of an Elle Bache ad that featured a nekkid woman dangling precariously atop a set o’ chopsticks, sushi-style. Tagline: “Skin good enough to eat.”

Woman-as-fish: does it get any classier than this?:

Ella Bache (Sushi)

Fast-forward seven months. Turns out this was one ad in a series of three. I found the other two on Ads of the World while searching for more pics to add to the Animals & Women set. They’re not quite as offensive as the sushi one (really, how do you top comparing women to fish?), but they are insulting nonetheless.

First, woman-as-sweet-sweet-nectar:

Ella Bache (Honey)

And woman-as-ambiguous-edible-morsel:

Ella Bache (Spoon)

And the spoon is pink! (*Squeals*) How cute.
