Environmental Defense: Support Cleaner Ships and Trains

Monday, June 11th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/29/07:

Another alert, this one from the Natural Resources Defense Council:

Tell the EPA to reduce pollution from dirty trains and ships now

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a series of new standards that would help reduce the dangerous air pollution created by diesel ships. The EPA is accepting comments on its proposal through July 2nd, so send a message right away urging the agency to implement these improvements.

——————-

Via Environmental Defense:

Support Cleaner Ships and Trains

Trains and ships are major sources of air pollution. Nationwide commercial ships and trains emit about 20% of the smog-forming nitrogen oxide pollution and about 25% of diesel soot pollution from the transportation sector.

That’s why the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed rules to clean up the pollution from trains and ships. And you have the chance to comment on their plan!

Take action! Voice your support for cleaner trains and ships – and ultimately healthier air. Comments are due by July 2nd so take action today!

Via Environmental Defense:

Sign the Declaration of New Patriotism

Throughout history every generation has a unique challenge that tests its collective mettle. For us, that challenge is global warming.

That’s why we are inviting you to sign our Declaration of New Patriotism that thousands of our online activists and supporters helped draft.

We are hoping to collect at least 75,000 signatures to deliver to Congress by July 4th. So after you’ve signed please help us spread the word by passing this on to friends and family.

And, we’re planning to post the names of each signer who opts in on a Google Map to show the breadth of support we’ve earned from across the country.

As we celebrate the 231st anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this 4th of July, let’s reaffirm our commitment to face our generation’s challenge. Sign the Declaration of New Patriotism today.

Tell the EPA to Fight Global Warming

The Environmental Protection Agency is standing in the way of states trying to take their own actions to fight global warming.

At the healm of statewide efforts to fight global warming is California who has submitted a waiver to the EPA to regulate car emissions across the sunshine state. But, the EPA has yet to grant California the waiver and is thus preventing historic state actions to reduce greenhouse gases.

Take action! Tell EPA Administrator Johnson to grant California’s waiver and pave the way for statewide global warming actions across the country.

Sign Our Petition to Car Companies

Cars and trucks in the US emit 333 million tons of carbon dioxide each year – that’s about a fifth of our nation’s global warming emissions! And, automobile fuel economy hasn’t improved in 10 years.

The time for national action on global warming is now.

Sign our petition calling on car companies to support efforts to cut America’s global warming pollution.

A slew of anti-Big Oil/pro-clean energy action alerts for the 110th Congress

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

UPDATE, 1/22/07:

As many of you know, HR6 passed the House on Thursday; you can read the full text of the bill here.

Says Ayinde O. Chase of All Headline News,

On Thursday the House of Representatives passed the CLEAN Energy Act (H.R. 6), which rolls back subsidies and tax breaks for Big Oil, by a vote of 264 to 163. The bill specifically aims to close certain tax loopholes available to big oil companies, and collect royalties from oil and gas produced in public waters. The legislation when enforced will shift more than $14 billion from certain subsidies to investments in clean energy, such as energy-efficient technologies and renewable power. […]

The monies collected could be directed to:

– spur the construction of wind and solar energy power generation facilities

– provide incentives for energy-efficient appliances, buildings and equipment

– enable more people to purchase gas-saving hybrid cars and trucks […]

An Apollo Alliance study discovered that a major investment in alternative energy technologies has the potential of adding more than 3.3 million new jobs to the nation’s economy, stimulating $1.4 trillion dollars in new Gross Domestic Product, and eventually paying for itself in a 10-year time span.

Sweet.

My favorite headline come from Salon: “Big Oil gets punked” (!).

Earthjustice recommends sending your rep a thank you, that is, if she or he is deserving of one. Otherwise, ignore the twit and vote against him/her in the next election cycle.

—————–

With Congress slated to vote on the clean energy portion of their 100 Hours agenda later this week, the action alerts are coming at my inbox, fast and furious. Rather than post each individually, here’s a roundup of those that call on Congress to end subsidies for Big Oil, support clean energy, and/or vote yes on H.R. 6. I’ll add new ones to the top of the list as they arrive.

We need your help to contact the incoming Speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and to raise national global warming action as a top legislative priority next year.

Environmental Defense: Support Energy Security Resolution

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Via Environmental Defense:

Support Energy Security Resolution

America currently imports nearly 60% of the oil we use. At current rates of growth, America’s oil demand will rise more than 50% in the next 20 years. Much of this demand will likely be met by importing more oil.

America already possesses the technology to dramatically reduce our dependence on imported oil. We need political leadership to tackle this important issue.

Help reduce our foreign oil dependence! Ask your Representative to co-sponsor House Resolution 971, an energy security bill calling on Congress to pass legislation to slow, stop and ultimately reverse the growth of our dependence on imported oil.

Environmental Defense: Help Restore Gulf Coast Wetlands

Subject: Send an Email – Help Restore Gulf Coast Wetlands

***********************************

One year later, the Gulf Coast is still at risk.

Take action today to support wetlands restoration.

http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/hurricanekatrina/

***********************************

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Many of us remain shocked and saddened by the widespread devastation of New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf Coast region.

Yet, Washington has failed to learn the lessons of this tragedy.

There has been almost no leadership or funding for the restoration of coastal wetlands and barrier islands in the Mississippi Delta region. These wetlands act as natural buffer zones that protect populated areas from the full force of powerful storms.

Check out our list of Katrina facts and then help us prevent future tragedies. Send Congress and the President a message demanding that they fully fund the restoration and protection of vital coastal wetlands in the Mississippi Delta.

Environmental Defense: Stop Texas Utility from Reversing Global Warming Progress

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

UPDATE, 2/26/07, via Environmental Defense:

News just broke that Texas Pacific Group and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. are seeking to acquire Texas-based energy giant TXU Corp.

As part of the sale agreement, Environmental Defense helped negotiate an aggressive environmental platform that will, among other things:

— Terminate plans for the construction of 8 of 11 coal-fired power plants TXU had hoped to build;

— Stop TXU’s plans to expand coal operations in other states;

— Endorse the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) platform, including the call for a mandatory federal cap on carbon emissions; and

— Reduce the company’s carbon dioxide emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.

Here’s a story in The New York Times describing how Environmental Defense helped negotiate this deal: http://action.environmentaldefense.org/ct/fpSIM371JX7B/.

This is a huge victory for the environmental community. It sends a clear message about the undeniable momentum in our campaign calling for federal global warming legislation.

——————-

Via Environmental Defense:

Stop Texas Utility from Reversing Global Warming Progress

Trouble’s brewing in Texas and we need your help.

A mammoth, Texas-based energy company called TXU has announced plans to build 11 new highly polluting coal-fired power plants. Together, these plants would emit more global warming pollution than 10 million Cadillac Escalades.

TXU hopes to evade future national carbon cap laws. The plan is so cynical that it’s been condemned by executives from other energy companies.

If we don’t stop these plants now, their pollution will nullify all other progress made across America to reduce global warming pollution.

Help stop these plants: Send an email to TXU’s CEO John Wilder.

Learn more about TXU’s harmful plan and global warming.

Environmental Defense: One Light Bulb, Big Results – Make the Switch

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

(The following is excerpted from Environmental Defense’s “Make the Switch” campaign.)

——

Check this out – I just pledged to “Make the Switch” – by changing a normal light bulb to an energy-saving compact fluorescent light. Thousands of people are pledging, too.

The next generation of bulbs are better than the old ones and last up to 15 times longer. That saves money and global warming pollution.

In fact, if every household replaced just three 60-watt incandescent light bulbs with CFLs, we would reduce as much pollution as if we took 3.5 million cars off the roads!

Make your own pledge and help out in the fight to stop global warming.

——

Here’s what you need to know:

– Changing a light bulb makes a difference. If every US household replaced three 60-watt incandescent bulbs with CFLs, it would be like taking 3.5 million cars off the roads!

– CFLs save you money. A 20-watt CFL, which screws into an ordinary light socket, is just as bright as a 60-watt incandescent.

– Today’s CFLs are dramatically better than a few years ago. You won’t miss your incandescent bulbs.

We’re asking every member of the Environmental Defense community to pledge to switch at least one bulb in the coming year. If you and two friends do it, we’ll easily meet our million bulb goal!

Please take the first step today. Pledge to switch at least one bulb in the coming year.

Sincerely,

The Global Warming Team at Environmental Defense
