Update, 8/3/10: http://www.schlongs4seals.com is live! I’m still working on the interactive photo gallery and discussion features, but the blog is functional (and has already logged more posts in August than I was able to write here in all of July) and all of the other pages are done. Also, I’ve uploaded all my schlong-related artwork to a set of photo pages as a temporary solution whilst I hunt the internets for a shiny piece of WP-compatible photo gallery software.

Leads for said software would be both awesome and appreciated!

—————–

Update, 7/14/10: www.schlongs4seals.com is now mine. Muahahahaha! (At the time of this writing, the domain just redirects back to this post, but still: Muahahahaha!) Stay tuned for details!

—————–

Update, 7/13/10: I just received a notice that Facebook deleted my SCHLONGS4SEALS page because:

You created a Page that has violated our Terms of Use. A Facebook Page is a distinct presence used solely for business or promotional purposes. Among other things, Pages that are hateful, threatening, or obscene are not allowed. We also take down Pages that attack an individual or group, or that are set up by an unauthorized individual. If your Page was removed for any of the above reasons, it will not be reinstated. Continued misuse of Facebook’s features could result in the permanent loss of your account.

So, just to recap: serious requests for women to send in their tit shots “for the animals” = a-okay; satirical requests for men to send in their crotch shots “for the animals” = hateful, threatening and/or obscene. Facebook, I do believe you hate women!

Anyhow, I’m currently weighing my options, which look rather slim at the moment. I could try setting up a similar page, but then I risk having my account disabled – a hassle which just isn’t worth it. Flickr might prove more welcoming to a SCHLONGS4SEALS group – I mean, hey, it’s home to entire groups dedicated to sexually harassing upskirt photos (!) – and indeed, the faux PSAs I created are all safe and sound in their own lil’ Flickr collection. But, you know, different social media sites, yada yada yada. My final and grandest idea is to go Thatchers out and launch an entire SCHLONGS4SEALS spoof website. Which sounds great, but OMG I so do not have the free time!

So, we shall see. In the meantime, if you’re on FB and find this whole affair as despicable as do I, why not hop on over to that *other* page and report it for similarly violating FB’s TOS? Seeing as most of us are either women or have friends who are women, might I suggest choosing “targets me or a friend” from the drop-down menu, as this continued objectification of women most certainly constitutes “an attack on an individual or group.” Please and thank you.

Support the Seals, Show Us Your Tits (Screenshot 05)

A screenshot, taken on 6/26/10, of the “Support For The Seals!” Facebook page. The image shows a fan photo – which has since been deleted – submitted to the page by Petra Simkova, in which the wearer of a pair of white undies (men’s briefs?) is flashing what JK Rowling would oh-so-demurely call a “rude gesture” at the camera. In other words, what we have here is an exaggerated crotch shot and a middle finger – all in all, an adequate summary of my feelings towards Facebook and Michael McDade (aka SeaL Shepherd).

Update, 7/3/10: If you’d like to participate, but don’t have a Facebook account, not to worry! Just send me your package @ easyvegan [at] gmail.com and I’ll upload it as an admin. You can choose to remain anonymous OR be credited (with a link back to your blog or site), whichever you prefer!

A bottom-less Pamela Anderson strikes a flirty pose as she models PETA’s ‘Save the Seals’ tee. The shirt is all-white save for a black sketch of a fuzzy-wuzzy seal on its front. The ad’s copy reads, “What do I have in common with Barack Obama, Vladmir Putin and the Dalai Lama? We all oppose the massacre of baby seals. It’s time to end Canada’s shameful slaughter.” And, in red and gray text: “Pamela Anderson for PeTA” and “SAVETHESEALS / END CANADA’S SEAL SLAUGHTER.”
——————————

Over the weekend, I was browsing a few friends’ Facebook feeds when I happened upon Support For The Seals!. Purportedly, the page aims to “raise awareness” about seal hunting in Newfoundland – by (wait for it!) encouraging female fans to post photos of their tits:

Boobs for seals…did he just write that? Yes he did. Show your “support” for the seals!

1) Suggest to 100 friends! (link above)

2) More friends = more boobs = more support for the seals!

Much thanks to these brave ladies! Get your mammos!

Now, if I wasn’t already suffering from blog fatigue, I might offer a coherent vegan/feminist critique of this so-called “campaign” (scare quotes because it reads more like a Girls Gone Wild casting/sexploitation call); and, knowing me, this essay would clock in at no less than 2,000 words. Probably it would contain a good deal of salty language, and not a few references to “the kyriarchy” and “intersectionality.”

For example, I might begin my rant with a brief analysis of the “post your bra color for breast cancer” Facebook campaign on which Support For The Seals! is based, arguing that it:

1) trivialized breast cancer by making it all about the boobies (instead of, you know, life or fucking death);

2) excluded some actual breast cancer survivors from participating (i.e., those who have undergone double mastectomies have little need for bras; insensitive much?);

3) played into cultural memes which reduce women to body parts (What, no “boxers or briefs” campaign for testicular cancer? No, that would be silly!); and

4) did little to actually raise awareness of the issues surrounding breast cancer (Dietary and environmental risk factors, anyone? Time to drop the I word, methinks!), thus transforming the well-intentioned but misguided effort into a day of titillation for Facebook’s (heterosexual, sexist) male members.

I might also argue that Support For The Seals! is infinitely worse than the aforementioned breast cancer campaign, as a) it involves actual photos of actual women’s actual breasts, whereas b) the link between the objectified body part and the cause it’s supposed to further is much, much more tenuous (nonexistent, you might say).

I might point out that, practically speaking, this page does little more than provide a bunch of internet pervs with additional wanking material (as if they’ve a need for more, amiright ladies?); certainly, it does nothing to actually “raise awareness” about Canadian seals and the many threats they face, nor does it provide concrete assistance (material support, monetary donations, volunteer pledges, etc.) to those working to end seal hunting.

SLAUGHTER OF GREY SEALS IN NOVA SCOTIA

There is another slaughter of baby seals on the east coast of Canada each year. This slaughter…happens very quietly, but the nature of the slaughter is the same. Fishermen…descend on recently weaned defenseless seal pups and proceed to shoot and bludgeon them to death. The pups’ skin is then ripped from their bodies and oftentimes the carcasses are left to rot…

Saluting Animal Moms on Mother’s Day

According to writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh, the trials of motherhood make moms the great vacationless class. Although she may have been talking about the human variety—the moms who are near and dear to us—other animals show the same tireless dedication to their children. PETA hopes that this Mother’s Day, while you are praising your family’s matriarch, you’ll also remember that some of the best moms in the world are found in the animal kingdom.

Northern Fur Seals

Human mothers tuned in to Channel Mom may find themselves responding to anybody’s child when they hear someone calling the M word, but fur seals never make this mistake. Fresh from foraging for food, moms have to find their young quickly in a sea of hundreds—or possibly thousands—of seals, so both mother and pup depend on their uncanny powers of vocal recognition to find one another. Both will call out and answer, responding selectively to one another until they are reunited.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadian Cruelty Cover-Up?

As Canadian lobbyists attempt to sway European Commission not to ban seal product trade, Canadian government denies journalists and animal welfare groups permits to document slaughter

(March 27, 2008) — Canada’s commercial seal slaughter will begin half an hour before dawn on Friday, March 28. However, at this time, Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials have refused to confirm they will issue permits to observers to document the killing for the opening day of the hunt. The Canadian government has authorized a slaughter of 275,000 seals in 2008.

Observation of the seal hunt is a right guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The commercial seal hunt occurs in public space, and journalists and citizens have the right to bear witness to it and document what happens.

“This is another attempt by the DFO to cover up the cruelty of the commercial seal hunt on the eve of the European Union deciding if it will ban seal products,” said Rebecca Aldworth, director of Animal Programs for Humane Society International/Canada. “Notably, observers from the European Commission were prevented from properly observing the commercial seal hunt in 2007 when they attended it with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.”

As officials deny journalists full access to the seal hunt, media accounts report a delegation of sealing industry lobbyists funded by the Canadian government is in Brussels to convince the EU not to ban the import of seal products. In 2006, the European Parliament passed a historic resolution calling on the European Commission to immediately draft legislation banning the trade in seal products, regardless of the age of the seal.

“Just two days ago we stood on the ice with baby seals almost entirely covered in white fur—tomorrow those pups will be brutally clubbed, shot and skinned. Those are the images the DFO is desperately trying to conceal from the public,” said Mark Glover, Director of Humane Society International/UK.

The European Commission initiated a study on the animal welfare aspects of commercial seal hunting, the results of which should provide the foundation for a ban. That study found evidence that seals may be “skinned whilst conscious, resulting in avoidable pain, distress, fear and . . . suffering.”

Kinship Circle: Namibia – Legal Action Against Seal Slaughter?

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

UPDATE, 8/8/07:

I received the following correspondence from IFAW and have edited the original email appropriately (i.e., to exclude contact info for Mr. Bell and Ms. Pretorius).

IFAW remains opposed to the commercial culling of Southern African fur seals in Namibia due to the unacceptable levels of pain and suffering associated with this hunt, and conservation concerns about its biological sustainability.

Although IFAW is not directly campaigning on this issue, our campaign efforts in Europe may impact this hunt. IFAW is engaged in campaigns throughout Europe to establish national bans on trade in seal products, including those derived from Namibian fur seals. In addition, we are contributing to on-going efforts to ban trade in seal products throughout the entire European Union and are using a recently commissioned report to inform our efforts in this regard.

As the priorities for IFAW’s seal work are ending Canada’s commercial seal hunt, the campaign on which the organization was founded, and the implementation of European trade bans, we will not be joining Seal Alert in setting up a legal trust fund. We urge all like-minded parties to work constructively to bring pressure to bear on the Namibian authorities to end this cruel and unsustainable hunt.

Crimes Against Nature: Namibia

As you all know Francois Hugo (Seal Alert) has been deeply involved in campaigning to end the Namibian Seal hunt. The intention of the anti-culling campaign has always been to get Namibian Authorities to stop all culling/hunting/harvesting activities; and as of yet we have not used this campaign as a fundraising tool. We strongly believe that since the authorities have failed to respond to any reason, one of our strongest recourses now would be to explore our legal avenues…

The Namibia government knows they are on weak ground regarding the baby seal culling issue. They also think we (supporters, NGOs, etc) are not serious and are just seeking publicity for our funding coffers. They have this perception because if we were serious about ending it, we would have gone go to court to seek an immediate interdict to halt the hunt. No such attempt has ever been tried, and this sends a certain message to the authorities.

After speaking to an attorney yesterday, now know that we are in a precarious legal position. The rolling three-year quota was a smart move on Namibia’s part as it forces us to act in an exceptionally short period of time or lose the ability for a court application for next three years. The first step we need to take in order to get Namibia to stop the hunt, is obtaining an interdict. The first question a court will ask is “Why did you not bring the application when the hunt started?”

So the longer we take, the weaker our legal argument and chance of success. Namibia states its sealing policy is conducted under the constitution in a sustainable scientific manner. They state pup population (December 2005) is 205 500 of which they awarded an 80 000 a year, rolling for three years, pup culling quota. Scientifically speaking, 39% of the pups born are within the scientific bounds of sustainability that states 29% – 45% as sustainable.

The reality of the situation is that according to Namibia, the pup population count for 2005 (December) was a total of 205 000. 2006 saw a recorded mass die-off. In December 2006, despite promises from the Namibian government, population figures were not released (and to date these figures are unknown). Two South African Scientists and one Namibian Fisheries scientist stated in their research findings that there is a 62% pup mortality rate prior to the start of sealing season that started on the 1st of July. If you subtract 62% off the 205 000 pup population figures (before the mass die-off occurred), you will find it leaves you with an amount of 78 090 pups that will be alive for sealing season. The quota set for the cull is 80 000.

The conclusion is that this cull is clearly NOT sustainable and in violation of their own policies of sustainable use.

What counts in our favour as well is that Namibia has stated the sealing applies only to 80% of the population on the mainland. Again, 205 500 less 20% (island seal population) = 164 400 pups found on the mainland. Subtract the 62% natural mortality rate and it will leave you with a total of 62 472 pups. The quota = 80 000.

Our case for the seals is solid. CITES exports records indicate that since 1990, sealers could only fill on average 66% of the “sustainable” pup quota. This proves the cull is not sustainable for the seals or the sealers. What counts in our favour as well is the confirmation last year by the Ministry that the seal population in 2006 is still some 27% below the population level in 1993. The Ministry and scientist reports confirmed a mass die-off equal to the 1994 die-off (where Namibian scientists found 95% pup mortality and half the adults) in 2000 and 2006.

Taking all this into consideration, we decided that we need to appoint an attorney, apply for an interdict and go to court. But in order to do this, we need a legal fund.

Should you be interested in being part of this process by contributing to this legal fund, please contact:
Mr. Jason Bell or Christine Pretorius of IFAW in South Africa
[Contact info removed 8/8/07]

Funders should please stipulate that as part of the conditions for the funding, the sole legal decision maker should be Francois Hugo of Seal Alert South Africa.

The application for this interdict is a matter of urgency – the longer we wait to do so, the weaker our case becomes.

I thank you deeply and passionately for your time and consideration,

HSUS: Support Senate Resolution to End Seal Hunt

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Via the Humane Society of the United States:

Support Senate Resolution to End Seal Hunt

The Canadian seal hunt is the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals in the world.

Already, the disappearing ice caused by global warming has devastated seal populations in Canada’s North Atlantic waters. It’s estimated that more than a quarter of the seal pups have died, and the survivors are being targeted by the hunt. That’s because, despite these catastrophic ice conditions, the Canadian government is allowing fishermen to kill 270,000 seals in the 2007 hunt.

Last year, pups between just 12 days and 12 weeks of age made up more than 95 percent of the seals killed—either by clubbing or shooting. An independent team of veterinarians observed a previous seal hunt and concluded that the hunt failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare regulations.

A Senate resolution (S. Res. 118), sponsored by Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Joseph Biden (D-DE), is calling on the Canadian government to end the brutal and senseless seal hunt. Please ask your senators to co-sponsor S. Res. 118. If they are already co-sponsors, please express your thanks.

IFAW: 300,000 actions for 300,000 seals

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Via the International Fund for Animal Welfare:

300,000 actions for 300,000 seals

Canada’s annual commercial seal hunt is a cruel and unethical practice that produces a product nobody needs. 98% of the animals killed in the past two years have been baby seals between 2 weeks to 3 months old. And despite the potentially devastating effects of global warming to harp seal breeding grounds, the Canadian government has raised the annual seal hunt quotas to the highest levels in history.

Please urge the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Ambassador to end the cruelty of the seal hunt by completing the letter below and clicking submit. Please add your own comments to make your letter even more effective. After your letter is submitted, you will be prompted to enter your profile into the 300,000 Actions for 300,000 Seals global community.

Oceana: 10 days to stop the seal hunt

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Via Oceana:

10 days to stop the seal hunt

The Canadian government will authorize hundreds of thousands of seals to be killed this year as part of its annual commercial hunt. Ninety-five percent of these pups are between two weeks and three months old. They are shot or clubbed and then skinned for their pelts.

Canadian officials justify the hunt by saying that the seals are responsible for declining fish populations. But the real reason for the fish shortage is poor management and massive overfishing. Seal populations are also falling fast with more than half a million decrease over the last few years.

Help put an end to the seal hunt once and for all by contacting Canada’s Prime Minister today!

PETA: Help End the Cruel Harp Seal Hunt

Via People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals:

Help End the Cruel Harp Seal Hunt

The whole world reacted with horror to 2006’s images of ice floes bloodied with the carcasses of hundreds of thousands of baby seals whose skins have been ripped from their backs. Unless caring individuals speak out and demand the seal hunt’s end, that gruesome scene will be repeated again later this month.

The Canadian government has given the go-ahead for hunters to bludgeon to death 335,000 baby harp seals this year. To stop this atrocity, we must generate an international outcry against the Canadian government for sanctioning it.

We need to collect 50,000 signatures on PETA’s international petition to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper before the hunt begins. It’s time for Canada to erase this stain on its reputation and call off the slaughter immediately.

This week we have had both good and disturbing international news with regard to hunting animals. Canadian seal hunters express concern that European bans on seal fur imports may cause the collapse of their industry, and South Africa considers an elephant “cull”.

The seal hunt story was on the front page of Newfoundland’s St. John’s Telegram, Friday, March 2. The island of Newfoundland is in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, where the annual seal hunt is held. The article, by Tara Brautigam, is headed, “Sealers fear industry collapse.”

It opens:

“Canada’s centuries-old seal hunt is at risk of a collapse similar to the one it experienced when Ottawa banned the hunting of young harp and hooded seals 20 years ago, warns the former head of the Canadian Sealers Association.

“A recent spate of proposals in Europe to ban the import of seal products, including one floated this week by Germany, shows that efforts by the federal and Newfoundland governments to promote the hunt have failed, says Mark Small.

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Via the International Fund for Animal Welfare:

Canada’s Seal Hunt: Cruel and Unnecessary

Our humanity is measured by how we care for the vulnerable among us. What is more vulnerable than a newborn seal pup, stranded helpless and alone on the ice? A baby seal can be legally killed once it molts its white fur, which usually begins at about 12 days of age. The small, unprotected newborn of any species should not be preyed upon, never mind bludgeoned with a club. Seals are routinely clubbed or shot and left to suffer on the ice, then dragged over the sides of boats with sharpened metal hooks. Few sealers are observed checking to see if a seal is still alive before they skin it.

The Canadian government claims that the hunt is market-driven and economically viable. The fact is that sealing is a very small enterprise, accounting for less than one percent of Newfoundland’s GDP and an average income of $1,000 per sealer per year. And significant amounts of money continue to be spent by Canada through hidden subsidies to promote the hunt abroad, as well as to develop new markets for seal products. The federal government has subsidized the commercial seal hunt in many ways over the years, from direct subsidies to sealers and their organizations, to tax exemptions and federally funded support services during the hunt, including Coast Guard ships and ice breakers. The market is driven … by Canada’s government itself.

The products of the hunt are an unnecessary luxury. Most of the harp seal carcasses (including the meat) are simply abandoned on the ice. This isn’t killing for food or survival, it’s killing for fashion. Despite years of research by the Canadian government trying to develop new seal products, the only economically valuable parts of the seal are the pelts of defenseless seal pups, a non-essential luxury product no one really needs. In many countries, this hunt would be completely illegal.

ARA PSAs: Animals Do Science, Go Clubbing

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Before I head off to bed, one of my favorite animal rights PSA campaigns. Just because.

It’s from Humans for Animals, a group I’d never heard of prior to stumbling across these ads at Ads of the World (here and here). Surprisingly, the comments over at AotW are generally positive. That’s a good sign, right?

I’m out. Sweet dreams.

DawnWatch: Editorial on seal deaths in fishing nets — Hawaii, 10/24/06

On Tuesday, October 24, Hawaii’s Star Bulletin includes an editorial (the paper’s opinion) calling for limitations on gill nets. The piece serves as an educational tool for those who are unfamiliar with cruelties associated with the fishing industry that go beyond the suffering of the fish. The editorial is headed, “Seal’s death shows need for gillnet rules.”

It opens:

“On the same day that twin Hawaiian monk seals, carefully nursed to health, were returned to their isle of birth at Midway, another of its breed was found dead, its body snarled in a gillnet offshore of Waimanalo.

“The death of the 5-month-old pup underscores the need to restrict the use of lay gillnets that kill indiscriminately when left unattended by irresponsible fishers. The state, which has proposed but has yet to finalize gillnet rules, should move ahead quickly.

HSUS: Together We Can Stop Canada’s Cruel Seal Hunt

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

From the Humane Society of the United States:

Use your buying power to tell the Canadian government to end the seal hunt.

The 2006 Canadian seal hunt left more than 336,000 seals dead — almost all of them were babies as young as 12 days old.

You can stand with us to stop the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Your greatest weapon is your wallet: Sign our pledge and tell the Canadian government that you won’t buy any Canadian seafood until the hunt is over for good. (You can find out how to spot Canadian seafood here.)

We’ll deliver your pledge to Canada’s government so the politicians will know you’ve joined our international ProtectSeals team to end this awful hunt.

Granted, I’d never buy Canadian sea”food” anyway, since I’m a vegan and all…but hey, they don’t know that (*wink, wink*).

This morning, Monday, June 12, NBC’s Today Show aired a piece on the Canadian Seal Hunt.

You can watch the story on line at: http://tinyurl.com/q3hzu

It is a strong piece that includes upsetting footage and quotes from animal advocates such as Paul McCartney and HSUS’s Wayne Pacelle who says, “It is unconscionable, it’s barbaric, it’s inhumane, and it needs to end.”

Please thank the Today for the coverage. Much positive feedback for coverage of animal protection issues will encourage follow-ups and similar stories.
