Biofuels this and emissions standards that…

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

UPDATE, 6/12/07:

…and the Sierra Club weighs in….

Take Action: Support Energy Efficiency Standards!

Incandescent Light BulbIn order to achieve energy independence and curb global warming we must increase energy efficiency. We need an energy efficiency standard that will move America toward the 80% reductions in greenhouse gases that scientists say are necessary to avoid the worst consequences of global warming. By making better use of the electricity we already produce, we can not only save 300 million metric tons of global warming causing carbon dioxide by 2020, but consumers can also save a total of $26 billion.

Urge your Senators to support Energy Efficiency Standards!

——————–

I’m running late, so I though I might take a shortcut and consolidate all of today’s climate change/fuel efficiency/general enviro alerts into one big link farm post.

(In fact, climate change is such a “hot” topic* right now that I may even do a link roundup post every day or two.)

So, yeehaw.

Working Assets: Tell Gov. Sebelius, Cancel the Massive Coal Expansion in Finney County

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Via Working Assets / Act for Change:

Tell Gov. Sebelius, Cancel the Massive Coal Expansion in Finney County

Global warming is a real and significant threat to people all over our planet. Unfortunately, some of our political leaders are behaving as if the energy choices we make today will have no consequences whatsoever in the future.

Case in point: the proposal to build three giant new pulverized coal power plants in Finney County in western Kansas. The proposed expansion of the Holcomb station will make it one of the largest coal-fired plants in the United States, set to emit an estimated 14 million tons of CO2 annually — the equivalent of 2.8 million cars. Those emissions would then be “locked in” for the entire operating life of the plant — typically at least 50 to 75 years.

CO2 is not the only air pollutant that Kansans should worry about. While the electricity from these plants will be exported to the west, noxious pollution from the plants (including particulate matter, mercury, and sulfur dioxide) will follow prevailing winds to the east, and rain down on the population of Kansas and Missouri.

There’s just no need for such a massive, coal-burning facility in a state that is blessed with tremendous alternative energy potential. Development of non-polluting energy sources such as wind and solar will create good jobs for Kansans, help the rural economy as land is leased for wind turbines or solar panels, and makes far more sense than locking in huge emissions of greenhouse gases for decades to come.

Tell Governor Sebelius to reject Sunflower Electric’s proposal to build three new massive coal plants in western Kansas.

You can also write a letter to the editor of your local (Kansan) paper here.

FreePress: Stamp Out the Rate Hikes

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Via Free Press:

Stamp Out the Rate Hikes, Save Small and Independent Publishers

Postal regulators have accepted a proposal from media giant Time Warner that would stifle small and independent publishers in America. The plan unfairly burdens smaller publishers with higher postage rates while locking in special privileges for bigger media companies.

In establishing the U.S. postal system, the nation’s founders wanted to ensure that a diversity of viewpoints were available to “the whole mass of the people.” Time Warner’s rate increase reverses this egalitarian ideal and threatens the marketplace of ideas on which our democracy depends.

It’s time stand up for independent media. Demand that Congress step in to stop the unfair rate hikes. The deadline for comments to the Postal Service is fast approaching.

Sign the letter below to alert Congress and put the Postal Board of Governors on notice.

You can also grab some sample letters from Act for Change and the Feminist Majority Foundation / Ms. Magazine, and read more on The Nation and Common Dreams.

Finally, grab some swag and spread the word.

Working Assets: Tell the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to Protect Polar Bears

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

UPDATE, 4/5/07:

Check out Audubon’s alert and sample letter, too!

——————-

Via Working Assets:

Tell the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to Protect Polar Bears

Under pressure from a lawsuit filed by NRDC, the Center for Biological Diversity and other groups, the Bush administration announced in December 2006 that it was formally proposing to protect the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act — a crucial first step toward saving the bear from the ravages of global warming. But that doesn’t mean the administration will finalize that life-saving step, much less enforce it.

In fact, the administration’s proposal fails to designate critical habitat areas for the polar bear — even though melting habitat is the whole problem. And its proposal also refuses to identify global warming as the cause of the polar bears’ disappearing habitat, as if the polar bear could be saved without reducing our nation’s global warming pollution. That’s why we need a final decision that designates “critical habitat” for the bear and addresses human-caused global warming as the main threat.

Call to action: Tell the Bush administration to protect the polar bear and its Arctic habitat.

Deadline: April 9th, 2007

Working Assets: Save the Polar Bears, Support the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Via Working Assets:

Save the Polar Bears, Support the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act

Nowhere is the impact of global climate change more immediately apparent than in the far north. Polar bears are entirely dependent upon Arctic sea ice to survive — but the ice floes have been disappearing in recent years as temperatures rise. As a result, polar bear birth rates are falling, fewer cubs are surviving, and more bears are drowning in the open ocean.

Unfortunately, if we continue on our present course of greenhouse gas emissions, 80 percent of the Arctic’s sea ice could be gone in 20 years, and all of it by 2040. This would spell near-certain extinction for the polar bear.

To remedy this situation, Senators Boxer (D-CA) and Sanders (I-VT) have recently introduced the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act of 2007. This legislation will require a gradual move toward 80 percent emission reductions from 1990 levels by 2050, and provides incentives for renewable energy development.

Will you sit idly by and watch as one of the world’s most majestic creatures, the polar bear, goes extinct over the next few decades? If that prospect disturbs you, then please take action today. Tell your senators to support S. 309, the Boxer-Sanders Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act of 2007.
